Audi RS6 V10 revisited. Was this 580bhp twin-turbo V10 RS6 the maddest of them all?

- The 580bhp twin-turbo V10 RS6 was only on sale for a few years and I covered 30,000 miles in one, which I ran as our family car back in 2008-2009. I've not driven once since, so I was keen to find out how it drives today..

Imagine telling someone getting interested in cars today that 15 years ago you could get a V10 estate/sedan from not one, but TWO manufacturers. Insane in the best way!
But that fuel economy is laughable
We lost everything 😔
@@Gaudine Also, when you press on, on a winding road it's apparently all understeer due to the terrible weight distribution - again also, it's "quick" off the line, but given how much power it has, it's really not that great - and sure the 60-100 is great - but outside of Germany, you can't make any use of that legally. Great for munching miles on the highway - as long as you can afford the tickets & the fuel - otherwise a white-elephant in my opinion - or at least definitely a "heart" car, not a "head" car - or anything in between.
@@Beer_Dad1975 yeah. If you need and estate workhorse this ain’t it imo. I think estates should have reasonable fuel economy and reliability. I like some estates that aren’t top of the line models they’re just workhorses and you treat them as such.
@@Gaudine yes because anyone looking at a V10 is looking for decent fuel economy. You must be a social dynamo at parties.
What a mad car. So glad motors like this were made. More memory lane vids like this please Harry 👍🏼
Agree. More videos like "where are they now" or "how are they now"
@mariacanceri Obvious scam-bot is obvious - reported.
@@Beer_Dad1975 agree !! Love these Reviews
I miss this era of the crazy German Saloons/Estate cars with big engines: E63 6.2L V8, M5 5L V10, and this 5L V10 TT RS6.
However... I absolutely don't miss the reliability of this era :)
Truly horrid reliability.
That's what I wanted to mention, was good looking at one but maintaining one, especially nowdays is only acceptable if I had all the knowledge and tools needed. This way I would prefer more reliable one, like an inline 6 and that's it.
@@maestroadam but I keep seeing very high mileage example of those cars so what gives? People misinterpret high maintenance for reliability and durability.
To be fair the 6,2l V8 AMG is quite bulletproof. Especially compared to the others.
Has as every performance engines 2-3 things you need to look at but far better than the v10s.
@@hovnojede010101 Very complicated cars so more things can go wrong, when it does, the parts are quite expensive and it's a pain to work on, so expensive (or time consuming) to service.
That being said, saloons with supercar engines needs the maintenance of a supercar while being able to be easily daily driven, so the big bills are coming in more quickly than owners expect, hence the poor reliabilty reputation...
These cars are as expensive to maintain as to buy initially if you want to use them as they should be used (daily), and that's not even taking into account the depreciation...
That being said, they can still be unreliable, which would be even worse... 😅😅
While I’m sad we won’t see cars like the V10 RS6 and E60 M5 again, I’m glad they exist. Often find myself being tempted by them whilst browsing on AutoTrader 😅 great video Harry 👍🏾
I guess you are from the USA where in most states car taxes and fuel prices are very low compared to any european country.
@@PaulTC777 nope, I’m in the UK. Well aware of how much cars like this are to run, doesn’t put me off owning one 😂👍🏾
i do the same but then i remember just how awful it is to do engine work on them haha. we wont even see V8s anymore soon enough
Manufacturers these days are trying to wipe them out. Plastic parts, dealer only fitment and software control, parts out of production etc., all contributing to them either being written off, unrepairable or bought by people that should have no business owning them if they can't afford to maintain them.
I just bought a 2004 E55 kompressor Estate in 2021, sold my new AMG estate to buy it as well!
It's great to see these older generation cars getting some airtime. They're from a time before the youtube/influencer explosion, so they do tend to get forgotten about. Hopefully now we can start to see appreciation for some truly excellent cars and keep the buzz around them going for as long as possible.. Cars like this will never be seen again and without being revisited, they'll just disappear from memory.
I think a lot of the modern cars will have been found to have been over produced and some of these special cars from 15-20 years ago will be really sought after.
Great car, i owned one and it really comes alive above 100mph, it's like a rocketship the way it effortlessly gains speed and very few cars can match you at high speed on the autobahn.
Did a 1000 mile trip with it and when i arrived at the destination i was like, "wait were already there? I wish the destination was further away!" I just wanted to keep going
Never mind the Audi, please give us a review of the NSU Ro80 hiding in the background. Such a special and futuristic car in its day!
I’ll second that!!!
@@simonelliott5956 A third from me!
yeah, bankrupted NSU with its warranty bills 😁
Thanks for the Ro80 film - now up on Harry's channel!
Still looks bang up to date to my eye. Love the wheel arches too.
Looks far better than most modern cars.
@@bg22757 Most of modern cars are very overdone and overstyled. Desperately aggressive and unfocused stylisticly. Some audis look ok but only because they are hold overs from 2008-2016 styling atleast until facelifts. New RS6 is too aggresive and rear glass slant makes its trunk less usable for no good reason.
The best RS6 design will always be the C7 (2013-2018)
Proof that fashion is temporary but style is permanent, I bet most of today’s performance cars don’t age nearly as elegantly as this shape has
That engine is a force of nature.
still the greatest generation of the RS6
I agree this was the RS era at its best
Sorry, C7 for the win. I'm biased as I own one......
@@anthonyprice1576 Nothing, absolutely nothing nowadays beats the old naturally aspirated RS cars from the Ferdinand Piech era.
The 2015 RS5 for me, was peak Audi engineering.
I grew up with this car for a few years, my dad got one in 2008 when I was still in senior school - initially I never wanted him to get it as I loved the Range Rover Vogues / Sports he used to drive and felt like Audi was a downgrade - however, I was a stupid kid and I was wrong, this is the car that made me appreciate performance, RS models and VAG sports cars in general, this is the first car that ever made me go ‘wow’ and almost give me whiplash when my dad put his foot down, it made me love cars.
I then got a Golf R when I started driving and haven’t had a standard car since, it’s all thanks to the V10 Audi RS6.
Even got dropped off at my school prom in it, all the kids being dropped off in rentals acting cool for the day - my dad owned a beast and I was proud of that.
Got one of these. Understated brilliance. Love it despite recent £11500 repair bill. And Ive taken a dead fridge down the tip in it. Do that in your Lambo ? Love the flexibility.
Sweet lord, what was that bill for if you don’t mind me asking?
You should watch mark mcanns video of him doing a tip run on his lambo. Fridge strapped to the roof 😂
V10 RS6 is such a legend of a car. Amazing. Can't thank you enough for your review.
I feel 2008 may have been the zenith year for cars. What a classic machine!
Its was phanastic for the typical leasing customer. To maintain this engine it’s one of the worst ever made. For the replacement of nearly any part the engine has to be removed. There is just no space to work. Also the engines losses lot of power due to coking of the intake ducts.
Beautifully car but you need the money for maintenance on the long run
In hindsight from a person who was a teen at the time, 2008 might well have been the peak of society. Tech was becoming super common, things still played as they had decades prior, People were still very social and cars seemed to be riding a wave of cool that is now fading. Seriously, it felt like manufacturers just threw wild ideas at a wall and tried any idea that stuck(Especially here in America). Then the recession hit and everything changed every year since.
Economic crisis hit then
@@joshuakhaos4451 Yep. Cars, music, television, movies, almost everything from back then has aged like fine wine. Not the nonsense coming out these days.
@@rickmorty7284 Not all of it, but even the stuff that didnt age super well is more exciting than half of the shit now lol. But yeah, a lot has aged like fine wine. Maybe not as beautifully as the 80s has, but the 2000s deserves some credit.
Thankfully though, the 2000s havent gotten the 80s and 90s love yet and many of the fun cars from then are still very affordable.
This is what made me fall in love with audi. The subtle design and utter madness under the hood. Such a sleeper. Sad to know cars like this will never happen again
Going back even further I had an Audi 100 S4 (before they sorted out the paper sizes) I loved it and at the time 240 hp from the 5 cylinder turbo felt pretty good. Happy days 😊
I am from the states but I have to say this is hands down one of the prettiest Audi products they made. I love the front face it has and how subtle it is. You wouldn't know it is the high-performance model until the person floors it and you hear that v10 roar. A brilliantly fast, yet understated car. These days these attributes are hard to find as everything is so overly styled
I had one of the first RS6's in the UK and did over 65K miles in it. An early puncture meant it was off the road for the first 6 weeks as there were no tyres to fit it and the linked suspension eventually gave up the ghost meaning that a steady 70 down the M42 with minor road joints resulted in the car going slightly off line meaning you were constantly correcting but overall fantastic, Comfortable, effortless and intersting when you put your foot down.
Thanks for sharing.
This and the Zonda as a two car garage is absolutely ridiculous. Harry lived the dream.
When I was a teenager I was absolutely obsessed with this car, watching sound compilations on RUclips, finding tuned ones by MTM or ABT, listening them for hours. With time of course I calmed down, now I'm 27 but right now, the sound of this car in Harry's vid, reminded me all these feelings 🥰
This is the first I've heard one of these cars through a decent external mic and I'm absolutely floored by the sound. Far better than the R8 for my money, not something I thought I'd be saying.
Don’t remember Harry being as happy as this for a while…… memories are always special no matter the car sometimes
What a treat to have a mid week video from Harry!
There were 2 golden eras for cars; the 60s and the 2000s-2010. I appreciate the content from this era, Harry! Thank you for this!
People really have overlooked the 2000s quite badly. There was a ton to like about that decade and it did a lot right. The 2000s had some very odd and special cars produced during that era that nowdays you just dont get. It was almost like manufacturers just threw ideas at a wall hoping one or 2 would stick. And whatever ones did, they went with. No matter how ridiculous they were.
Fully in agreement. It is arguably the best era. It was the era when technology enabled high reliability and daily driverability and comfort BUT crucially not so complicated to be unreliable like modern cars.
Also build quality was at its peak during that decade. Now even a slight hail shower will pit a modern cars paintwork 😂
Finally cars were still driver focused while today they are jut stuffed full of gimmicks that one just doesn't need/distract
Great video as always, Harry. Would love to see more of these 'affordable' performance cars being reviewed. Maybe some hot hatch favourites from your EVO days? Thanks for the consistently great content.
Love it when Harry revisits iconic cars.. This is one of my all time favourites❤
Yes yes yes, all lovely Harry but hang on, NSU RO80!!!! Video very soon hopefully.
I miss my S6 of the same generation. I don’t miss the electrical issues that cost thousands to work out, but beside that it was amazing
Same here but I didn't have any direct issues with mine. Besides an insane fuel bill and Audi's (lack of) service.
Some one at work has one the air rear shock failed about a grand to fix and rear main oil leak was a engine out ££££
@@ianthomas8743 I had a rear main seal on my Lamborghini go out a couple of times, as then Audi was trying to get rid of their old stock, and sent me the same garbage twice, but it was a mid engine, and easy to replace though, sad that Audi wouldnt sell you the revised rear seal, and ship the old garbage again and again
Wiring loom in the engine bay underspecced for the heat, so failed. Of course I found this out after being told I needed 2 new throttle bodies at 750+VAT each. Which was nice
@@iainarthur7713 It's sad and comforting to hear that someone had my exact experience. Unfortunately my loom caught fire and melted the entire harness. Car was down for MONTHS and cost 10k US to repair.
Wonderful ! dont stop doing these very good coverage an this car will be a future classic!
Great idea to revisit old legends. Brilliant to watch 🙌
What an incredible motor .. I so much prefer these memory lane videos over the latest performance Ferrari, Mclaren etc.
Really nice to see you feature this car Harry. Thanks dude 👌
Love these videos with the older cars for 10-15-20 years ago! It’s amazing to see the difference with what you got back then to now
Thank you for this video on the RS6 V10 Avant - it brought back fond memories for me. The understated look, very much in the mold of an original Q-Car.
Love this generation of the rs6!!
Terrific video Harry, so great to see cars we lusted over, actually not that long ago. And V10 estate, hilarious and wonderful period in history. Fab stuff
Great video as always, Harry. What a machine!
There's also a pretty Ro80 in the garage! Hopefully it'll be featured in one of the upcoming videos 😊
Really enjoy these relatively lesser-known but fascinating cars ! Thanks
This almost looks better today than it did at launch. Compared to the brand new buck-toothed M3 estate this looks far better to me. Thanks for the rewind Harry, I can see why you wanted another go.
Great video! Thanks for the visit into the past. Also, thank you, Mrs. M., for standing out in the cold and the rain to film the exterior views (even in Slo-Mo!). You add so much to these productions. :-)
I remember doing some runway races against this years back in my SLK55 and they really do push on after 60mph and keep pulling. Still think they're super desirable.
Great Video Harry,
Great to see to see content of performance heroes from the days before engine downsizing and ever more stringent engine emission regulations. I owned the previous (C5 )model in the lovely dark blue and adored the traction and engine noise but found the ride just too harsh.
More video's with content like this one please.
Thanks Harry for all the videos you do.
The best channel on RUclips great content as always
Ever since the Layer Cake movie, it one for the dream garage
More of these revisited reviews please! Love seeing the slightly older stuff with mad engines!
Agreed! Makes for very interesting content! 👌🏻
I love how retro the interior is and I love the Audi red and white dials. A future classic!
The ergonomics of this cars seating is 👌 the seating positions hugs the body, wraps the driver, you looked comfortable in the seat Harry 👍
Had the V8 A6 at the time, and got the V10 S6 for a weekend to try out. It did not have the turbos of the RS6, but the V10 sound was insane. I did a few sound recordings and videos before I had to return it. This engine was insanely great, and I was very tempted to get one.
Harry! I think that the people want a new series of classic cars just because 🎉😅. Love when u review old cars
I love this car. My family has always had LOTS of Audis, but this car is absolutely awesome. I like it when you go back in time a bit. I might have to go find one for sale. Like you, I love the sleeper element.
I have one of these, I've just had to have the engine removed to replace a leaking vac pump on the back of the block, along with a number of other worn out parts being replaced it's costing nearly £20k but, it's so worth it, such a fantastic car, I love it!!!
This aged very well. Nice sound even when it drives slow and grumbles just around. Not to much, just right. Great Video!
I remember working on the turbos on those for Audi, enjoyed a couple of trips out to IHI in Germany too. Massively detuned out of the factory, turbos were capabale of much more, but Audi didn't want to overdo it as it knew it would have to up the power for the next generation..
Even then the next generation made less power iirc
Big turbo = big lag.
@@jareknowak8712 that’s why there were two. They spool up at different revs so lag wasn’t an issue on these.
@@jareknowak8712 that’s why there were two. They spool up at different revs so lag wasn’t an issue on these.
@@mattmorris2867
I doubt they used 2 turbos bc of "2 stages" of boost, normally you use 2 with V-configuration bc of the headers, lack of space, its much easier to feed 1 turbo from 1 bank of cylinders than 1 turbo from both banks.
The lag is small bc you still have a BIG displacement to work with.
But with smaller turbos (when there is not much reserve of potential extra power) the lag would be even smaller, engine response would be even better.
Factory use bigger turbines also bc of less heat and longevity.
Excuse my English.
Great to see you covering the C6 RS6. I’m love mine.
Great video Harry and team!
what a proper car. Amazing what was happening just about 10 years ago. A product of a very different vw.Piech's vw. One which was building XL1's and R8 V12 TDI's, not EV's that were so bad in terms of crash safety and structure that they needed the entire front trunk area filled up with crash structure to pass crash standards(no really. The ID3 and ID4 are both like that)
Been rebuilding the engines of mine for 2 years (have 2 engines just in case) and did a start-up last week - dropped a sleeve so im back to square one. Thanks for taunting me Harry! It will be back running, thats for sure.
LOVE the reviews of the older cars!
AWESOME, very interesting to revisit this car.....if I had the money I'd get one. As you say pretty much under the radar/understated, thank you great vid.
This car design has aged like fine wine. Everybody keeps mentioning the M5 V10, but they always forget Audi made a car with basically a Lamborghini engine + 2 turbos and with 80 more hp
This is better for average drivers cause it understeers pretty early and you can realize you are doing something wrong. The M5 can do better lap times than this but it requires skills.
@@PaulTC777 Nonsense. What 'skills' do you need to drive a wonderfully balanced car? The BMW even has this thing called 'feel' which allows the driver to have a million times more information on the conditions, grip, tire placement. I've heard that absolute nonsense about FWD-understeery junk being 'better' because of all kinds of made-up wildly imaginary things, and they've never been true.
I've driven these cars and so many others way up north on ice and snow, specifically also testing them and not just driving around for leisure, and often even on ice you can get faster lap times on a RWD car than AWD which seems impossible. But it's true. There's even evidence from that time period these cars are from (just a few years later) by Swedish Auto Motor och Sport who tested RS4 vs. 335ix touring vs.135i vs. Civic Type-R among others, on the same tire model. On ice. With a professional racing driver. The slowest of the ones I mentioned was the RS4.
When you have a predictable front end with excellent turn-in and great feel you can absolutely maximise your grip and drive right at the limit. You can be more precise and place the car exactly where you want which can mean hitting an exact groove or avoiding a certain bit of slippery stuff. And above all when you can avoid understeer which makes you back out totally you can instead keep on driving right on the limit of both the front and rear end grip. You'd have to provoke the Audi to go sideways to gain any corner speed or corner exit grip advantage, and no-one does that on the road with such a horrible car with totally unpredictable handling, unpredictably AWD system which you don't know if it'll understeer or send it into wild oversteer... If you don't have a football field of space but instead a lane to keep to you can't chuck it in sideways and then figure out the rest, no, you have to keep it neat-ish and so the Audi will only understeer and you're wasting massive amounts of potential grip which you can't use as you're limited by the front wheels washing out. You can't touch the throttle when the front wheels are overwhelmed.
They look very dated to me.
It’s not a Lambo engine. But yeah.
Love them! Arguably my favourite chapter for the S/RS models. I'm really taken by how understated they are (something that Audi are getting away from these days I feel) but that there were enough visual clues on it to grab the attention of those who cared enough to know. It also blew my mind that this RS6 was packing a V10 from a Gallardo.
Thanks for uploading this a day before my birthday Harry I've never watched your content before but this being favourite audi I can't resist .
I remember back in 2003 my dealer had an RS6 sedan and the second I started it and began to move I was in love! The thrust that it produced was amazing. The doctor that bought it was one lucky fella.
I spy NSU Ro80 in the garage yummy.
Please make more of these revisited videos!
Thank you for bringing back to memory lane! Great car!
Thanks for the video Harry. I used to have one and massively regret getting rid.
Yep, every now and then I think about getting fid of mine. And then I come to my senses….
Nice! These, and older, soon to be classics are a lot more fun to watch than modern exotica.
An obviously well-looked after car with not many miles and doubtless a future classic. We look back on these with nostalgia.
Great video, as always, would love to see more of these older cars revisited .
I recently worked for Top Gear and pitched an idea to use this car as it’s such a throwback to a bygone era, glad you picked it up Harry! Looking forward to this one
We had an Avus Silver one back in the day and as a family wagon it was immense. Yes it understeered on roundabouts, but the brutality of its acceleration and the ‘look’ made up for it. We saw 15mpg once too 😅
Definitely now one of the modern classics....❤
Fantastic video harry as always
Thanks Harry, I enjoyed that, still a dream car of mine!
We expect a soon review on that NSU Ro80, please!!
Great video it would be nice to see you review some older cars like this more often. I can actually afford them these days lol.
I remember when these came out, and I spotted one at Warrington Audi as a demonstrator model in that fabulous Sepang Blue. The salesman stated that they had not sold even one yet, although the £80k price tag and the credit crunch probably didn't help. Great video.
gosh, that is my favourite rs6.. newer cars are super good ofc, but this has a special place in my heart

I owned one from new 2009 model. Factory specced it With all the bells and whistles, ceramics sunroof everything, Fabulous car. Few minor niggles every now and then but rock solid drivetrain. Was one of the first to get over 750bhp stage 2. These easily do 1000bhp on stock internals now. MRC tuning in Banbury are an essential visit if you have one of these for maintenance, servicing and tuning forget main dealers.

Ultimate how? In understeer, lack of feel, unnatural and unbalanced handling, being slow?

Great idea to revisit this car! I’ve always felt the softer design didn’t do justice to the bonkers package and was too understated. Glad Audi have ramped that up over the years though. The RS6 is and always will be my dream car.

Great video yet again, Harry. I had this vintage of A6 Avant but in 3.2 V6 guise. That was a wonderful car and I loved it to bits. This RS6 was always one of my aspirational cars...maybe one day!
One of the very best "Kombis" (German name for "Wagon" translates to and is short for "Combination")
These are incredibly affordable here in Germany (Probably because most of them are here) and i know from Owners all over Germany that these are also fairly easy to have maintained and because of the parts it uses also easily repaired. But again, that might be because i'm in Germany.
I know in the USA they're apparently more expensive to maintain, no idea about the UK
