EDIT: For all viewers that have no time to watch entire video and didn't have time back in school to do their home work: Liquid nitrogen = Liquid air so it's not toxic and it just boils away when you poor it in to the lake :D So no fish or lake was harmed during the video but I am again surprised how little people know about basic stuff :D
Big thanks to Audible for sponsoring today's video! I have been using audible for many years so it's easy to promote them and the Expeditionary Force is probably the best audio book so far that I have listened so if you like scifi I strongly recommend to give it a try!
Beyond the press so how much liquid nitrogen to freeze the whole lake
I have an idea. Please make video "molten magnesium vs water". I have never seen any youtuber do this.
you should do this again, Put a camera under the water facing up!! :)
Beyond the press
Should try with a cover on the wave blocker.

Melt lake in winter, freeze lake in summer. You two always deliver. Thanx.
They are doing their best to increase entropy in the universe.
Oooh I can only imagine what they are going to do .... And some things they do are even beyond my imagination !! FINLAND ROCKS !!!!! ♥
@@DOCTOR_SONG Beyond the Press = Beyond the Imagination. 👌👍😁
yep. but they should make up their mind as to in which state they want that poor lake... :D
@@michajastrzebski4383 how about PLASMA lake? Not quite liquid. Not quite solid. 😊
"NO UNDERWATER CAMERA?!??!"
We put GoPro camera to the lake, but it couldn't see shit so we didnt use the footage.
And I heard some dude broke your other gopro...?
@@TuomasIkonen was it you Tuomas? You can tell us. We're all good friends here. Is your kettlebell sleeping through the night now with that remote-controlled crib? (See we know all about you.) 😀
@@WoodworkerDon my gosh... Everythings public now... And thanks for asking, the kettlebell is growing fast. Shes now already 22lbs. Im a proud father.. ☺️😚
@@TuomasIkonen yes, you are in the global public eye now. Take care of that little one, and any others you might bring into this world. Mine are 27 and 30 years old now. ☺
Your hair is so cool in the video.
Ice is a decent insulator and protects the water below from freezing. Next time you should release the nitrogen at the bottom of the pool. It's slightly lighter than water so it will rise through the entire water column and mix very well.
And maybe put a lid on top with a small vent. Most of the nitrogen got blown away, if you let it boil off and slowly vent out, then it would probably be more effective.
“It’s THICC AF!” -Lauri 2019
thikk in Finnis
When you both got soooo excited about discovering the ice, this is exactly the kind of thing we love about you guys, the most iconic couple on RUclips!
Lauri is only preparing the lake for the midsummer. If it's frozen, then no one can drown in it.
Challenge accepted.
I love the way your channel just gets in and does it. No endless science chat, just a brief explanation of the madness to come.
Could be pretty cool to see what happens if you sink one barrel of nitrogen in to the lake with explosive attached to it and detonate the whole thing underwater.
That would be very good to see!
man you're explosive
It would have to be done somewhere with no fish... you'd kill them... only a good thing if you are hungry lol
@@ElevatedEyes2023 no fish in this lake. Good thing too, else Anni and Lauri would have killed them already
Yessss
0:50 My new favorite unit of measure...the Anni lol

Still better than the gallon

Today we are going to block out the sun to freeze the lake! Do not try this at home!
Oh man, I was just about to dump my excess liquid nitrogen into a lake nearby while standing near it, but since Laurie said don't do this at home, I won't.
I would buy audio books that were read by Laurie and Anni for sure!!!🤘
i agree their real good attempts at good Enlish really make you listen harder

"Its thick AF"........... hahah! You guys are rock stars.
i do believe you have made the first ‘fog maker 5,000,000’!
fun video!
thanks👍
NASA builds the biggest fog makers.
Learning physics with Lauri: "Now the winds take the nitrogen away, and we don't suffocate."
60 liters of liquid nitrogen equals about 60m^3 of gas so at least indoors this would be bad idea :D
Many scientific discoveries were made through the creative processes related to accidents or bad ideas. But please do be safe. 👍👌
@@Beyondthepress >>> JUST SAVE THE CATS!! 😊
Snow dump swimming pool? That almost sounds like a much-needed trip already...
Crazy Russian hacker says BOOM,,,beyond the press channel says,,,PRETTY GOOD
I only have Google knowledge of this but in the USA Liquid nitrogen cost $2 a gallon + $150 if you buy your own container. Hopefully future experiments will be much cheaper for you if you now own the containers! I love your channels, keep it up!
"What's for lunch?"
"Frozen fish."
I sat down with my lunch and checked youtube and this video came up, and I remembered that this morning I dreamed I was sitting at the computer next to the kids here and the Beyond The Press theme came on and I started headbanging.. no lie
Maybe put a waveblocker 10 000 000 around the waveblocker 5 000 000 to get an even more stable lake.
And cover them both with a sheet of plywood
this was awesome, get that molten lake
"It's tick! It's tick! It's tick af!" Love it 😂
You guys are hilarious! Deciding to ignore the change of seasons is maybe the most ambitious project ever! :-D
I have Audible and I have to say it is really great and I use it all the time. I especially like the "Great Courses" audio books which are a series of lectures about tons of subjects.
You guys are the most excitable, expressive Finns on the Internet. I like that a lot. Send my regards to Leo, Leoko and Nelli
"I probably get like ten times more nitrogen."
HELL YEAH
"Holy Shit. There is ice!" Love the reaction. Love you guys.
That is so crazy - this video is so different from the last, when the lake was completely frozen - what a difference.
I absolutely love your accent. The slight trill you put on your Rs is so charming
Slight?? :D Never heard a stronger "r" :)) I love it too though :)
that was a cool video! your enthusiasm is infectious!
I wonder what would happen if you opened the liquid nitrogen bottle under water?
i was thinking the same way. that might be interesting 😀
It would be a question of whether the water would freeze over the opening or whether the pressure of the expanding nitrogen would keep it clear.
Hmm??? Only way to know for sure is to try it once. 👌
@@NovaKnightThe nitrogen would keep it clear. If the ice sufficiently resisted the pressure would rise towards ~500 atm. At some point, probably 10-20 atm the container blows up if the ice magically resists.
I predict water would get into the flask as it is opened (btw, can't close it completely, must have some kind of one-way-valve to do this; otherwise you might die from metal shrapnel when it explodes; what keeps the nitrogen cold is that some of it boils off continuosly). As the water gets in it boils very violently and blows a big nitrogen bubble under water. This escaping nitrogen keeps more water from getting in. As the stream of gaseous nitrogen dies down, more water gets in and it repeats.
What makes pouring water on an oil fire so particularly stupid is that water sinks in oil; so it sits at the bottom and boils. As it boils it mixes further with the oil and boils faster and mixes further and boils faster and creates this fireball of atomized burning oil. If you could release a large volume of liquid nitrogen under water, "deleting" the container instantly as if by some magic (not sure how you'd be able to get close to this in practice; maybe a very large lid on the container and mechanism to yank it away quickly), the nitrogen floats rather well and the escaping gas might keep it somewhat insulated. I bet most of it makes it to the surface and spreads out from there; I don't think it would be as violent as water in hot oil (kindly disregard the fire).
@@NovaKnight I believe that a small opening will freeze, theres no room for water to get into the container and the water will freeze on its way in. What happens next is pure speculation, the N still evaporates and eventually builds up a pressure, Lauri just demonstrated how weak ice is at so low temperature so the ice cap may blow off and the process repeats. Only one way to find out.
Once again the fish are left thinking "Vot da Vaak!"
When the fish see Lauri on the dock, they are all like:
"Oh no, it's him again.😱 Everybody swim to the far side of the lake!"
🐡🐠🐟👌
I loved the update on the dump site. Thanks!
You guys do the things we'd all like to do. Great channel.
Great job guys very fun to watch and very interesting! Have a great week and see you next time:D
00:33 Anni cracks me up haha
The power of Mother Nature is amazing! pouring 16 gallons of -321 degree liquid nitrogen into the lake yielded a tiny amount of ice, I have seen you guys in the winter walking and driving a car on the same lake and the entire thing is frozen to several inches!
Again you guys made my day lol awesome video!!!
Love how you guys always make the most interesting and craziest videos. Keep up the great work
Cool! Looking forward to a part 2! Some kind of diffuser would help with freezing. Something like an atomizer nozzle or a hose with holes. Having the nitrogen release under water would reduce heat loss also.
Underrated video.
I’ve been patiently waiting for this since I saw Anni’s video earlier this week. I absolutely loved the result
have been looking forward to your new vid and again you deliver.you are both great.tks
so how cheap is that stuff for if I need ice cubes in the summer?
Hey guys ! You and your frozen lake lol!!! MAXIMUM FREEZE !! love it !! I love sci-fi as well . I should have figured you do since we seem to think alike.
Audible is great and I've been a member for years ! I started listening to Expeditionary force today It is quite good! Thank you for the recommendation!!
♥ HuGGs ♥
how much did they charge for the nitrogen ? my nearest supplier is the university and they charge E2 a litre
The Greenpeace are about to come to check the condition of the lake
Lauri: *hold my beer*
Interesting Video!! 👍👍
Thanks for the snow dump update too... 😉
Hi, what has happened to the smashanator 5000000? Or the jet engine stuff?
You guys think of the craziest stuff! I love it. Great work, you crazy Finns!
Not suffocating seems really great!
Awesome test in lake...
Great video! Can you post what music you used during the video?
I was waiting for this all week after seeing Anni's video.
Take a steel container and seal a second insulated container (or just metal tubing, maybe melt some tin or aluminum to fill in the gap between the tube and the steel wall) around the outsides so you can have LN surrounding an ice extruder. Make a sealed door on the bottom that you can open once the water is frozen and if it works well enough you could manufacture one continuous ice block.
"Wow. Wow, wow." - Anni
you two make me smile XD
"Icy what you did there"
hehehehhe
Do part 2 in a clear container so we can see what it looks like from underneath and the side.
as soon as you said air i said" wow lauri's english is getting pretty good."
So how much N2 do you need for the whole lake?
I love the Moomins! Anni, maybe you could introduce this Finnish cultural treasure to your viewers some day?
Audible should hire Lauri to record an audio book reading of Eugene O'Neill's "The Iceman Cometh."
👍😁
If you
should try this again, try it with metal wave blockers, they should cool down a
lot faster than wood and give you better block of ice. Just a thought. Thanks
for the videos.
Where did you get all of that
It probably would have frozen deeper if you had a lid over the box to keep the gas from flashing off as fast. Fun video as usual. Have a great day.
Now you made ice for your cooler.
great job.
I'm wondering, what is the density of liquid nitrogen vs water? Is the nitrogen sinking and ice floats to the top until there is a surface layer for the rest of the liquid N to work upon?
Liquid nitriogen is lighter and will stay on top of the water.
How do you come up with these ideas?
This video was awesome!!!! Blew me away how much had actually frozen solid. Should try liquid nitrogen against salt water and see how it reacts differently compared to fresh water.
Saltwater has a lower freezing point and therefore less ice :(
I love listening to you to talk lol it's so cute, and I love all the things you do too , your channels are some of the best on RUclips 100%
very nice keep up the good work
Bubble liquid nitrogen up from the bottom of a fishtank or something? Would it make hollow ice bubbles?
It'd be good to see this done again with a gopro underwater looking up from below as the nitrogen is poured onto the water. Could hopefully really see how solid the ice gets.
I had camera there but the water was moving so much that bottom of the lake got stirred and the water was full of sand so you couldn't see anything
Wow, I wouldn't mind living along side that lake...beautiful, looks peaceful until these two come out of the house...lol All jokes aside, nice place Laurie and Anni, you two are lucky to be there!
try open the flask under the lake and see what happened. that might be interesting 😆
Nice idea! I think you are right, use a smaller amount of water. One problem is the cold water will sink down and the warm water will rise up so it is going to take a lot of Nitrogen to freeze that whole amount of water. Next: go swimming in the snow dump site swimming pool!
you should have used some sort of tube to get the ln20 to pour below the waters surface as it is lighter than water.
"wooww! it's tik! it's ticc... it's tik!! it's tic.."
hi. Thanks for your amazing videos. You could try same experiment, but in an closed tank with same dimensions on the top. Same surface contact between water and liquid nitrogen. but the phenomenum is isolated from the entire lake. I think the layer of ice would be more thick.
thats some good looking shatter right there
Noo :( You now pronounce Audible the "correct" way. I preferred your Finnish twist on audi-bleh!
I got so much feedback from that last time that I decide to learn that :D But it wasn't easy that I can say :D
@@Beyondthepress Anyone that can speak more than one language is like a wizard to me, I think it's amazing! I don't even know a single word in Finnish. My comment was from a nice place, I love you guys and your channel. Keep being awesome.
@@AsphaltAntelope Usually I don't care about pronunciation, I even say our main youtube channels name wrong every time :D But I thought that it might be more professional to say our customers brand correctly :D And to be clear Audible were also completely fine with my original spelling also so this was just my own decision :D
@@Beyondthepress Please don't ever correct how you say "hydraulic"! It's much better how you say it!
That's wacist!!!
LOL @ waveblocker 5mil...hahahaha, you crack me up dude.
What song is playing at 5:25 ?
This was pretty good! but I would have loved to see a camera in the water film it from below when you pour the nitrogen in too!
We had GoPro there but it couldn't see shit. 😀
@@Anniarvaja Aw that is a shame. Do you think it would work better doing it in a pool with the camera able to go deeper from the surface being frozen? Or was the visibility from below pretty much the same problem as from above? Would still love to see the footage taken even if it is bad, to still my curiosity ;)
Anni your hair is looking awesome!
I love it!
Somehow I always hear 'Beyond Depressed' hahaha. I can't unhear it and it's been plagueing me for more than a year now :D
Ha I hear it!
@@xxXthekevXxx Terrible no? You can't unhear it :D
Great video. You could try the same thing in a glass sided fish tank so you can see inside. Or put a GoPro in the water, looking up.
Cool smoke signals.
Guys, if you do something like this again, I'd be curious to know temperatures or the water around the box, and maybe the ice when it's formed.
GUYS. I'd say. Make the wooden container smaller. So that there's not alot of water below so that the ice doesn't melt as fast. Also then you can contain the liquid nitrogen better and then you can get a better ice block that's thicker and probably you can then have a proper square ice. Then you can do experiments on it
"No fish were frozen in the making of this video."
Getting excited about ice in Spring. You can't get more Finnish than that.
Time to make liquid nitrogen snowman!
Frozen lake fumes, don't breathe this in.
I move away from the lake to breathe in.
Hah love the Expeditionary Force series, the reader does a great job with Skippy the Magnificent! Now you should do some 'shiny beer can' experiments :D
What is the density of liquid N2?
