- Borderlands reviews were not kind to the Borderlands movie. Eli Roth Director and Screenwriter did various interviews about his movie. While Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford also answered responses and reviews about the Borderlands movie release. Borderlands Review critics were not kind in their review scores for the Borderlands movie. But Eli Roth director and screenwriter alongside Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford, didn't help in their marketing. While Eli Roth did interviews bragging about how the movie is seemingly inspired by every movie under the sun except the Borderlands IP. Randy Pitchford spent literal days replying to all and sundry on twitter in a passive aggressive manner. Even picking a fight with review critic Paul Tassi who actually likes the games. It turns out it's not just the movie that's low quality, it's part of it's very creation. And at this point in Hollywood, is anyone surprised? I’m wondering how many people actually made it through the movie. I went to Deadpool and Wolverine, again, on Friday. There were some seats still marked as available, and people kept wandering in until they were all full. By the third act, about two dozen were sitting in the aisles.

It's the same formula again: 1) get IP 2) get big stars 3) get greenlit because you have the IP and stars 4) make something completely different than the source material 5) wonder what went wrong.

As Disparu said. It would have done better if they had hot women in it to at least take the focus off the bad. Look at Sydney Sweeney in Madame Web...The only good mentions of that movie is her...They should have watched Twisted Metal before they made this. They would have at least an idea of how to make a decent video game adaption. But I think season 2 is going to go downhill...Just by how they ended season 1.

I'm not even a player of Borderlands but just by looking at the poster I could tell things were off. I could tell Jamie Lee Curtis and Cate blanchett should not have been there. Somehow I knew they were too old to be playing the characters they were playing and it turned out I was right.
Here’s my advice to this director, when I went to see the first Harry Potter movie with my kids it was fun , exciting and very mysterious. Then the second movie came out and it was great and I decided I had to find out about the books. Then I read the first book and it was great. The movie should make you want to find out about the source material and not think what a terrible movie.

The big question I have, is what movie was Eli Roth making? From how he described it, it sounds like "Sci-Fi: The Movie" just some blob of content rolled into a ball with no cohesion or real thought put behind it.
From what I have heard so far this movie in and of itself is a crime against humanity and the name of a very good video game that I am currently playing

Anybody directing a movie based on a game that says they want to do their own thing, and that the games are one thing and the movie is another, should be immediately fired and replaced by someone who actually respects the game.

It seems like the cast is some kind of weird mashup of characters from different games. Agreed though.
Roland, Lilith and Mordecai could have been played by talented, lesser known actors, with Dave Bautista as Brick.

Randy Pitchford has historically been the worst thing to happen to games. He ruined Duke Nukem, he ruined Rise of the Triad, he ruined Blood, he ruined Doom and now he has ruined Borderlands.
Why on earth would they pick big-name, elder actors to star in it, when young nobodies would be a fraction of the cost and maybe fit better?
They thought people would only be interested in it if they had major star power.
They were right, because they blew the entire budget on stars and put zero effort into anything else.

Randy Pitchfork is a terrible person and incompetent, at least within the PR sphere. How he became a CEO or remains one is beyond comprehension.
He became CEO for being one of the founders of the company, and then survived almost entirely on their Half-Life expansions and ports until the mid-00s.

Lilith is supposed to be young, to my recollection. Haven't played 1 for a few years, but I remember that.
They should rely on actors who can portray the characters, not famous people who can't do the job right. Kevin Hart is a great comedic actor, but an awful choice for Roland, who's a badass military type. The first trailer had me grimacing when Tina is grossed out by the "pisswater"area they ride through, when game Tina would probably be babbling about how fun the ride was.

I'd say EVERY single one of the actors besides kreig. Even the young girl they cast to play tiny tina looks like double the age tina's supposed to be. Idk if its the makeup, her face, or what. But she looks like a freaking 18-20 year old. Tina's supposed to be what like 12-13? All the casting was just completely off.

The funniest thing about this movie is how Craig Mazin co-wrote it, then took his name off because of how ass it ended up being.
The old Telltale game development studio had 1000% more talent than the people that made this movie.

The fact that they were dumb enough to release it anywhere near Deadpool and Wolverine on top of it being a complete dog water movie is just hilarious. Its like they were begging to lose sales.
I wouldn't say that, honestly. There's been tons of movies that released near the same time, and they did really well... (Ghostbusters and Gremlins, Blade Runner and The Thing, Jumanji and Heat, Dark Night and Mamma Mia)

@@IBooDoopI What I'm getting at here is that you have a highly anticipated movie with the two previous entries having significant commercial success both by fans and critics and also in the box office. Its probably not a great idea to drop a movie with poor writing and production like you said, from an established franchise to which you are unfaithful to the source and expect a hit thats going to draw attention to it over the competition. I didn't even hear about the borderlands movie until it was getting bombed after it came out either which doesn't help. Not saying it can't be done but poor timing isn't going to help things especially when its not up to par.
@ZeruS117 my point is that the timing of release has almost ZERO impact when the rest of it is terrible. Countless movies have done it, had good advertising, writing, etc. They released ALONG highly anticipated films and did amazing because they were so. The movie would have done fine had it been well made, and choosing release as the issue is just grasping for more reasons tbh
To add insult to injury Deadpool 3 isn't very good it's the exact same as that bad Erza Miller Flash movie like beat for beat it's practically a rerun but with FOX marvel flavored key dangling.
regarding the guns:
They are like THE defining factor of Borderlands games. There's 69 bazillion guns in the franchise, going from shitty whites to legendaries that grow a pair of legs and chase down enemies while shooting them in the butt. Then there's the elements that range from shock to radiation, bullet patterns that are pentagrams, eagles, etc.
Despite this, all we got in the movie was the fucking infinity pistol from BL2 and a bunch of generic white/green rarity pistols. It was easily the most disappointing part as someone who has played this IP since 2012, and a clear indication the people who made this movie didn't a give a fuck about the source material.... along with the bad casting lol.
i also raise you the infinity gun which once you have enough badass points is pretty much 1 hit kill fps destroying beast.

They had a whole set piece with the fight with the psychos full of crates. They could have set that up like a mini boss fight that you do in the games. After they defeated the psychos and the crates were smashed up they could have found some legendaries that had a golden shine to them.
Borderlands was the first “looter-shooter” game it created a hybrid genre merging first person shooter with role playing game aka FPS+RPG. The defining gameplay loop is “get gun, shoot bad guy, take his stuff to create better gun”. Not making this part of the movie would be like a Mario movie where Mario never jumps.
Any director who says "shut your brain off" should be booted from the industry, and blacklisted. Stupid movies for stupid people are a plague.
why? not every movie needs to be deep or whatnot.
transformers, pacific rim (not part 2 tho), john wick, deadpool, etc. are fun movies - i go in and don't expect some great story with some insane plot twists or anything but great action and have fun.
and don't get me started on the b movies xD. all great for a laugh and are enjoyable.

I'm still trying to muddle through the early games(I know the characters and played "Tales from"by Telltale because I wasn't required to grind 200000 hours to level up enough to take down some desert thug, lol). Glad I didn't try "TTW".
I bought that game on ps4 and it runs at 15 frames a second consistently.

I'm shocked by how bad the casting was, too often they pick famous people just because they are famous, not because they would fit the role.
So many of my favorite IPs have been ruined, and I'm scared they won't ever remake them because people hated the adaptations.

I'm surprised the game was a success TBH. It was overrated because of the humor and the game mechanic is shallow at best. Even the character Skills are barebones and mostly passive. It's not gonna be the Diablo of FPS anytime soon.
@@NormanReaddis The first game had a unique look and style, while still being a solid diablo fps in a time, where not every developer copied that. The second game improved on the first one and added a fantastic villain. Only the third one failed utterly. Not sure where Gearbox is going now as it looks like Borderlands as a franchise is over for now.

Tannis strikes me as being in her 30s, there really isn't anyone old enough for Jamie Lee Curtis to have played. I mean they could have created an original side character, but that would require things like imagination and effort.

Man I had a friend who told me that was going to be a good game. It was one of the first Steam games I bought and I still have under 1 hour played. Same friend also said Sega and Zune were the future. We're no longer on speaking terms.
The fact that the guy who directed Hostel also directed this abomination is shocking. This movie did what the Velma show did, and just used the names and rights of a popular franchise to make a completely unrelated movie. It doesn't feel like it takes place in the Borderlands universe. It feels more like a B-movie copycat of a Borderlands movie than an actual in-universe licensed film.
Oh, there won't be brand damage, Borderlands 3 did that all by itself. He really should stick to "Magic tricks"
3 wasn’t that bad. It has, by FAR, the best gameplay of the series, and I think that makes up for the average story. NOT for their mistreatment of the original cast and them forcing Ava on us, but the DLCs for sure were quality.

There’s actually a short fan film that dropped on RUclips years ago when BL2 released. It’s called “Home Sweet Sanctuary”. Made by passionate fans that cosplayed as the characters. And, they actually look like the cast! Recommend it if you felt bored to death by the real movie.

I never realized how much filmmakers look down on video games. It’s like they still believe that video games are little kids toys made by people who couldn’t make it as a REAL Hollywood Writer. Nah 3rd game wasn’t bad… it just wasn’t 2 and was a bit of a cash grab, but it’s actually pretty decent and gearbox supported it quite well.

I was thinking about this the other day, and the answer came to me.
Originally, this film was pitched as an animated movie. This cast makes so much more sense if you pretend for a moment the original idea was EVERYONE would be voice acting. I'm not saying it would've suddenly made a film this bad great, but the whole hot mess at least makes some iota more sense if you imagine this cast wouldn't have been creaking their old bones around in live action.
But I guess animation would've taken some effort, so they passed? idk, now I'm just annoyed we didn't get an animated Borderlands movie a la the Spiderverse treatment. Fast paced, frantic, frenetic, hectic, spastic energy really catching the essence of the games. Live action was a terrible choice for this, it should always have been animated.
Jack Black being part of this failure is a major bonus.

Don’t forget that video games can carry a message that they disagree with. If I was a conspiracy theorist I’d say this movie was made to purposely prevent people from picking up borderlands because it honestly covers some deep dark topics that they don’t want discussed. I work at an upscale movie theater, I just got my server training done, and multiple people have asked me to close out their tabs so they can leave the movie only 30 minutes to an hour in. I did hear this kid say that it was the best movie but he was only like 7

Eli Roth wanted to make a sci-fi movie, but the new Hollywood rule is use an ip, so they just chose borderlands, and it’s super misleading to fans of the ip.
It still amazes me that they never look at the cosplayers and reach out to them for pinning down the look...

We should implement a "Henry Cavill rule": all major participants in a game adaptation should have played the game to completion and be able to describe all the character motives and plot beats. The games are known for 3 things. The art style, the ridiculous guns, and over the top characters. This movie managed to look like they pulled the sets from the backlots, no guns, and standard female power fantasy characters. Everything feels like it is AI generated.

Blanchett wasn't a good fit for Lilith either. She is a great actress, but this type of character needs another type of actress I think.
Roland was grossly misscast though. He is not the type of character that tells jokes. he was basically the grounded character to all the crazy stuff, again, Hart can be good in certain types of roles, but he simply doesn't fit this character.
