Great subject! When I found your channel, the first thing I noticed is your unique look which is perfect for you. Uniqueness is one of those things that I really appreciate about people. An example that comes to mind is Italian singer and songwriter, Piero Pelù. I can't imagine him any other way. When I'm not in my Boho fashions, I'm in costumes at Renaissance Festivals and Highland Games. Thank you for all your advice and suggestions!

LOL. Great video. I've showcased all type of facial hair; since I shave my head and there is not much to ply with there. From full bushy beard, to handlebar mustache.
I've always wanted to break with some of the stereotypes that get attributed to designer and artists when it comes to dress code. Although black is one of my top colors, I dress tailored clothes and 90% of the time a tie.
But one of the things that I've learn to make my own; and use it in someway as a personal touch, is my "strong" accents. Although I've been living in USA for 25 years, I still carry a strong Spanish accent. It has always been hard for me, and many times in the past (and still now) a reason of "shame"; I still struggle every time I want to record a video. So now when I do presentations, or give talks, I usually start making a joke about it and use it as a part of me that makes up my artistic personality.
Anybody who deals with personality traits they feel "uncomfortable" with, should look at them and find the way to turn them around, and make them a "charming" part of who they are.
Just my experience.

Pat, The desktop patterns I have are just grabbed from the net. Many and from imgur(dot)com what has massive dumps of wallpapers to grab. They aren't my art. I change them all the time just to stay inspired. As far as politeness - I tell you it's hard sometimes. People can be real d*cks. But you gotta take the high road. You'll never change someones mind on the internet. It's not possible. If people wanna spread bad kharma, that's on them. ~peace.

I think this is a great subject, but a little one sided. It's too bad the only women you talked about are Hugh Hefner's "accessories" and a couple of singers who wear things nobody could get away with wearing to work, no matter how quirky we are expected to be as designers. I wonder if this is actually one of those things that does work differently for women than men. If you look at some successful women, Sheryl Sandberg, for example, her style is extremely bland. Tattoos are great (I have some) but I've always been advised to cover them up in professional settings. I think people make some assumptions about women with tattoos they maybe don't make about men.
Hey Kate, great to see you here again. I agree there are inequities in how woman are treated in the workplace - or what is considered acceptable attire. I come from the fashion retail world and from the design agency world, both where self expression is pretty extreme - and a lot more is acceptable. yeah, I know my examples were extreme - and sorry you thought they were not female artists of respectable standing in their own right. Just trying to illustrate the subject.
I love Lady GaGa and Nikki Minaj, to be clear. But the things they wear would never pass muster in any workplace. Your video is for designers, right? I'm just imagining applying their style to real life in an office, meeting clients, and it's kind of hilarious to think about. Angus Young hat, ok sure. Showing up to work in a bra and a thong, not so much ;)
Kate, I'm certainly not talking about mimicking these extremists - the outrageous costume style idea was noted as being over the top - and was only one of many much more do-able ideas, right?
I get what you're saying but all the other examples were men and I was waiting to see an example for a woman, but that was the only one so it stuck out. I would like to see some examples of how women can dress professionally but also with personal style, and also not be tortured by things like miserable shoes (sorry now I'm going off on a tangent.) Maybe I will wear a colorful tie and a beard, that would be attention getting.

Yeah, I'm certainly guilty of the myopic man thing. Just my blindspot being a guy I guess. Plus if there was anything I learned from 15 years in the fashion industry is to never make suggestions concerning personal style for women - except to pass on the Manolo Blahniks no matter how good they look on the shelf. .*wink
