- I didn't expect all the history in this small little abandoned town. It was not only an abandoned town off of Route 66, but there was a massacre with native americans here, Billy the Kid and his crew hid out here, and there was even an old zoo!

So that bridge you drove across is the Canyon Diablo Bridge, which was built in 1914. It predates Route 66 by 12 years, and became part of the original alignment of Route 66 when it was first commissioned in 1926. Yes, you drove on the ORIGINAL alignment of US Route 66 and drove over a bridge that I was too afraid to drive over LOL!
There were actually TWO different zoos built in this area. The original zoo was the one you saw after you crossed over the bridge. This zoo was built on the original alignment of Route 66. When the Route 66 alignment was moved farther north where I-40 currently runs, the owner built a NEW zoo in order to be closer to Route 66 (where the "Mountain Lions" building is).
Great video!!!
that the rest of the story, thank you
You need two guns if you're going to be out there alone 😂😂
It would so cool if someone had some old film footage of that campground. What a fascinating place and I've driven by there several times and never noticed it.
Yeah I tried to find some footage of the campground, but couldn't
During and after the Great Depression these places on Rt. 66 must've been a sight to see. The universities must have many photos.
husband speaking - most folks are in too much of a hurry - we pass something as we zoom past and think, maybe some day I will
stop and see what that is or was. I did that several times on my way from Wash. to Calif. I took the same route, saw a small museum
and thought I should stop. Finally I told my self I would and it was closed up and gone.
There is always more history in an old town then meets the eye! I'm glad you took the time to show us around and tell the history there!
I was a teenager on a Greyhound bus the last time I went to the site Fall 1974. I wish there was a way to photograph my memories of the stop. It was pretty cool, I enjoyed the stop.
I was booked to play in a band at a small bar in Two Guns- so small we played in the parking lot. Diné and Hopi were our audience. We took a break and a young Diné guy walked up to me and said his Grampa was a Medicine Man and could make it rain. I let the old guy up to the mic, “Hey ya ya ya!” and damned if it didn’t start raining!
I was there, a few years after it closed. Interesting place. I went in the cave. And yes, it felt a little spooky.
Thanks, you went into a lot more detail than I did, I only got the gas station & the KOA pool, now I guess i need to go back & see the rest!
What a great place. You’re a History teacher now. 🎉
I've passed by there a few times and never knew there was so much there. I've looked it up, but have never had the chance to stop. Thank you for the tour very cool.
I have passed by that place many times as well. Last time I thought about stopping, but there were a couple of cars there, so I didn't. Thanks for posting this. Very interesting!
Loved those old black and whites at the end. So atmospheric. What a captivating place!
Always passed it by, but never explored Two Guns due to my passenger car. Thanks for the tour. Lots of cool ruins to see. Thanks for a cool video.
That was outstanding, Sarah! Great that you were able to find pictures online to see what it looked like back then. Fascinating!
I believe the Apache Death cave is a natural limestone solution cave. I would love to explore it further with a bright headlamp. Great video! Thanks for sharing.
As odd as it may seem, that gas station has been cleaned up some, and I'm guessing that who ever left that bed did it. I watched a video about this location sometime last year and the inside was full of broken glass, wood, etc. It's almost completely cleaned up now. Yay for the cleanup! Some of that tagging is definitely good quality but I wish it wasn't on a landmark, as unvisited as it probably is.
Maybe you can buy that campground and turn it into a giant Hipcamp spot. ;-)
BTW, your video was FAR better than the one I watched last year. That video was just the gas station with a tiny bit of history on Route 66. I had no idea all of that extra history was hiding right there. Thank you for your research and great video, Sarah!
If I had the $$$ I'd definitely buy this lil town! 🙂
@@wanderingjeepsy I know I wish I could buy it. I always wonder where all of the "historic preservation societies" are when there are so many places like this going to ruin. It seems like they're more concerned with preserving another gingerbread house in some town. I like those as well, but this is definitely classic American history rotting away. So sad.
I went to the area two years ago with my grandson we live out on the East Coast. It was really cool. I have great photos.
I passed by the location in 1969 the interstate was still under construction. I had absolutely no knowledge of the cave and it's First Nation connection history. Very well done WJ. As you travel through your 'journey of healing' u may find the Myers Briggs 16 personally test(free online) of interest and surprising accurate. Shalom
🤠 October 2021 my friend & I made a road trip from Tennessee to Albuquerque . We stopped here on our trip, what a fascinating area . I took a lot of pictures all around there . We went to Apache Death Cave & went quite a ways back in there . One of the neatest areas lve seen on a road trip . I'd ❤ to go back there . Thanx for sharing your video Jeepsy‼️😊
You have been to some very interesting places, but this one is a jewel. So very interesting! Thank you! Godspeed!
Yeah I was excited to film this place! 🙂
Great video, so much forgotten history. Thank you for filming. I had no idea this place existence. 😊
Two Guns has special meaning for me. My Aunt and Uncle ran the store and gas station there in the 1940's. My mom took a photo of me in front of the store in 1948 that I still have tot his day.
Really a neat place ☺ thanks for taking us along
You go wondering jeepsy F.............the haters.i thing your awsome❤,and I will always watch your content every time you come out with something new.Keep up that BEUTIFULL 😀.
Cool pics at the end.thank you for taking us along.loved it🎉❤😊
Thank you so much. More places to visit!!
I've seen quite a few vids from 2 Guns but yours is clearly the best and most extensive of all. I really regret that we first went through there in 1964 in its heyday and didn't stop!
Thank you!
Hello Sara wonderful Sara. I’m enjoying your video right now. I have to go to work volunteer work. I’ll catch up with you later. Stay sweet Gary.
Interesting area to explore! Did you get further east and “Stand on a corner in Winslow Arizona”?
Enjoy and I hope Lil One is all better. 😎
We had to pick up a hitchhiker there...just HAD TO...and he turned us on to Mesa Verde. Thanks guy standing on the corner in Winslow Arizona 😊❤
I went there as a child. We stayed at the RV Park. I remember the zoo. That was a long time ago. I have not thought of staying there in years. Thanks for sharing!
That was a kool place to explore...lots going on there over a long period of time. Great job on the video..👍
Love this video.great fun information 😊❤
Vary good views and great quality video ❤
A real vanlifer, one who doesn't run over dogs and NOT stop like Vannesas (fake) Vanlife Journey...
😮😮😮
Very interesting history of that location. Just like around my area just loaded with history but covering a more vast area. Safe travels Sarah and little one. 😊
Thanks!
Thank you!
@@wanderingjeepsysorry it can't be more.
Hi sarah, cool vid ive heard of that pl@ce but never been there, pretty neat history seems like being so close to 1_40 it could still be viable a lot of that happened all over when the interstates came in right here in my town the old road came right through town all the truck traffic and all, now that main drag lined with motels truckstops ect is totally bypassed by 1_10 & i_25 saw the same thing in northern part of colorado springs i guess we call that progress???thank you for the vid and hi from nm!
Yes, you see that in the Spring, north Nevada has lots of older motels😊
Hi I just came across your channel randomly and I can't stop watching. I admire what you are doing and also a little envious as well. I'm a 60 yr old man and always wanted to do a self trek. Keep up the great work and wish you well. Just subscribed !
Many of the roads and highways in America were trails used by Natives pre-America and statehood. It may have been Junipero Serra that would make a pilgrimage from his California mission to Mexico City. That was in the 1700's!
The story on the crazy man who opened the zoo is a whole episode. But the laundry mat was burned. It really was pretty big. The guy used that land to make money off the cave and the zoo he made. It is pretty sad.
Can we get an update on Lil One?
I posted an update on her on my community post 🙂 I have to take her to a veterinarian tomorrow to get her bandage off & check her paw 💜
Excellent, well done. So much history, the ‘Apache death cave’ is disturbing , and cursed. Many horses perished also. Thank you 🤠
Where's Lil One?
I took a photo of twin arrows, but one was on the ground… I showed my grandson, the movie, Forrest Gump and how they were all right there at that spot
I love to jump in my classic car and travel on route 66
Wow! Incredible place. Thank you for sharing. 💕
Wow. Very cool. Thanks for showing us
Ok I have been missing out. I only truly discovered You-tube videos when I purchased my new large screen Smart TV. I love it and your vlog is at the top of the list. ! As I am in Michigan you are showing me stuff I would never see. And I love it ! Thank you ☺️
Where is lil One? How is she ? ❤
I am taking her to a veterinarian in the morning to get her bandage taken off & see how her paw is doing 🙂
Okay, let’s start at the beginning The Shell station at the beginning has a perfect exit from the Interstate right in front of it. Because of travel speeds and better auto mileage, it found itself in a gas dead spot and soon failed. It was never really any part of Two Guns, but it did serve as a gift shop for a while. It was the third gas station in the area. Apparently, you didn’t realize that the strip of road in front of it was the last Rt 66 alignment, and had you taken it west, it would have taken you to location of the last actual Two Guns gas station and café. The building you referred to as the “old zoo” was actually the replacement zoo, built after the original one was abandoned. This is the structure which you recognized as a zoo on the other side of the big bridge. The first round building which you encountered there was the original gas station. There was a lodge and trading post there as well, and these made up the original 1926 Route 66 Two Guns. When 66 was moved over to the other side of the canyon, Two Guns moved with it. That included the new zoo, 2nd gas station and café. NOTE that ALL of the buildings you saw were products of the Rt 66 development and none of them have any history whatsoever before 1926. The Apache Cave was set up as a tourist attraction, with some phoney stone dwellings crated inside. It’s really quite large, and you probably need to take another trip there to see it. Anyway, the Death Cave story came about many years later, having been written about in an adventure magazine. The consensus of opinion is that it’s pure myth, so you don’t have to worry about any spirits there. As most are aware the cafe/gas station/gift shop which marked the high water mark of the development were destroyed by an explosion and fire. The nearby large KOA was a dud and lost its affiliation and shut down.
There is some kind of deal because the Apache Indians are the ones that are suppose to own I think. I never went in cave. Not my thing. Many died there.
Now I want a road trip 😮. Love to visit this place.
Great video Sarah! Next time I’m out west I definitely will check it out…also wanted to tell you that we had to put down our little girl yesterday 😞☹️ She loved watching little one, she would bark at the TV when she saw her. 😢
Oh no. I'm so very sorry! I hope yall are OK 💜
Australia watching , reminds me of my early travelled half the Country for 30 year and then found dream place Noojee , 120 years of a logging Towns time of steam . Love all your travels. Noojee is bit different . Full of trees forest Maintains and 4 rivers and occasional Snow . Your channel is all inspirational and face says it all , living a life of adventure and awareness , stuff that money cant buy
My question is who built all those stone walls? That is the most expensive (time consuming) wall construction possible! Must have taken years to erect.
How is Lil one?????
I take her to a veterinarian tomorrow morning to get her bandage off & see how her paw is doing 🙂
@@wanderingjeepsy I'll be thinking of her🥰and you too!😘
#2 there was enough spray paint on that gas station that if it was the same color I could have painted my house.
Thank you so much Sarah for taking us all these places the ones that can't get out and go and travel. I'm so grateful finding your channel since the beginning. Safe travels wherever your next awesome Adventure takes you and little one...✌❤😊
Cool scenery, thanks!✌🏼😃🐶
Ty, I'll stop soon
Really cool this place thank you for showing us!!
I only have wifi...I'm going to the rest area on I-40 just before Kingman..north bound
..
.be safe have a great day..
I need a pin pal...have a nice day
One thing's for sure -- there's plenty of loose stones around to rebuild anything you care to. It looks like Two Guns would have been a good place for a drive-in theater. You didn't happen to see a lot of steel pipes sticking out of the ground anywhere? I wonder if anyone will ever reclaim all this land, and build something new, or if those buildings will just sit there crumbling over the next thousand years. Funny to think that I passed through there in 1960 -- wouldn't have stopped, unless my father needed gas, beer, or little cigars. The man wouldn't stop driving for anything else.
I used to metal detect that place alot in my younger years lived out there for about 3 years off and on...alot more history there than meets the eye...alot of zoo there... but alot of home dwelling s also...so much stuff happend there pre zoo...if american history was really taught. Lmao..the round buildings are called hogons...
There was a big hotel there..they say teddy Roosevelt stayed there once..
I have a lot of reserch papers maps and old pictures of canyon Diablo in it's prime..1910 ish..there is supposed to be 200,000 in confederate gold out there somewhere...in Diablo canyon..water was the reason it's not there anymore...not the 40 coming thru...
good video, thanks for taking us along :)
Best video ever!
Thank you!
GREAT Video -- Thanks, Sarah!!
You certainly best be careful on your own!! Thxs for sharing your adventures 😊
That was a most excellent video. Makes me want to go to the zoo! Thank you for stopping by this old historic town and sharing with us what you found.
That might have been the prettiest graffiti I've ever seen ❤
My cars still down. So, I've been getting rides from medical transport companies. The only way I can obtain food and meds I need is through Walmart. One of my drivers and I were talking all about this place just yesterday. Coincidence😂❤ Thanks for sharing this. Where's punkinhead?... lol. Lil One!🐕
To much sky in the desert.
lol 😊
Wow that's an amazing place thank you for sharing
Really wonderful to see thank you
Graffiti is really cool. Great place to visit. So much incredible history.
Thank you so much for bringing us along, very interesting, kind of spooky and one of your best videos 😎
I thought maybe it was just me feeling creepy things. Well I understand it now.
Been inside that gas station at the opening. And the zoo ruins were really cool!
I stopped here for the first time on my way to New Mexico last week and took a few photos. I wanted to drive back there at night and do some Milky Way shots with the ruins in the foreground but ran short of time. Also, a little concerned about safety there after dark. Cool video!
Amazing video! I'm so glad you stopped to sxplore!
If they would've had the foresight to buy the land connected to the interstate but then,it probably wasn't for sale.
Thank You for sharing. Hitting that spot up this Summer on Our travels.
Very cool!
Loved to old photos you shared in the end.
An amazing place surprise not to see junk cars and tires everywhere
Very cool video! Kind of spooky!😮
One of your most interesting places Sarah
im glad to see your all right after the 3 guys in the desert? be careful on the road trip there crazies out there
That's an interesting and beautiful place, thanks for the video
If I ever catch someone spraying graffiti, I will show them my artwork 😊
The spot that looked like it was a mine is the entrance to the death cave
Very neat place
Good job thank you stay safe ALL
Hobo Shoestring (Mark Nicholes) is a freight train rider. He came up missing and his body was found in Boone Lake on 4/5/2024. Paul is sad right now. Going to watch one of his videos soon on here.
Why cant they use all that space just a little better. Very beautiful out there.
That was so interesting, been by many times; never knew: thank you Sarah😎🤩⭐️
It’s so fascinating, all the pains takings ruins everywhere left there as if it were yesterday
Thanks for showing that to us
New follower, Susie 😊❤
British hugs to ya lady 🎉
