This was an AMAZING version of the classic tale. Surprisingly faithful. It didn’t shy away from the darker story elements, yet it never fully lost its almost childlike sense of whimsy. Truly captured the spirit of Christmas! I hope you enjoyed my The Muppet Christmas Carol (1992) movie reaction & commentary

The missing song has been restored! You can watch it on Disney + if you go to "extras" and click on "full length version". Why do you think they didn't just make that the default?
They didn't make it default because they cut it for a reason. I had this movie on VHS and as a child I would always FF through The Love is Gone. As an adult I think the song is fine, but this movie is primarily a kids movie and the song just isn't fun for kids.
@Riley Garraway, I have not put this movie in my top 10 Christmas movies, but I do like it. When I heard my cousin's littlest girl out of five say it was her favorite movie, I watched it again and really enjoyed all of it. I guess when someone special loves something you love it more. Christina, Katie, Anna, Debbie (the littlest is little Debbie), and Sarah (the youngest).
Beaker and "Pigs in Space" were always my favorite, but lately I've been watching "The Swedish Chef" as of late.

@Riley Garraway, not a real explanation so much as how the movie meant more to me when thinking of a little girl loving it. I guess I watched "The Muppets" as a kid and so watching the movie when older it meant little, but after seeing it with a child's eyes I loved it.
But another thing happened too.
"Who will love my children?" when a little boy refuses to be adopted by rich parents because then no one will love and adopt his disabled brother and so the rich family adopted both, but when the boy of four was explaining his older brother at six years old and his decision it made me cry.
"Schindler's List" when he mentioned how the ring and car could have saved more, I cried because that wasn't how his spirit was in the book at all.
"The Muppet Christmas Carol" during the second viewing and thinking of Sarah made me cry when Kermit was explaining Tiny Tim's opinion in church of how he helped people remember how Jesus had healed the crippled, gave sight to the blind... I cried again for the third time in a movie. I was working to teach autistic children to talk and six of them had become indistinguishable due to my efforts, but then Jesus will get the ones I missed or failed. Somehow thinking of a little one hearing it and thus listening more carefully I got into the emotion of it more.
In the book, Scrooge doesn't go home for Christmas as a child because his father sent him away after his mother died, & didn't want him to come home. Its actually a really tragic story.
When I learned that, it made so much sense Scrooge's view of Christmas make so much more sense.
Also, his beloved sister Fanny or Franny(?) died on or around Christmas giving birth to Fred, his nephew. That’s the reason he hates Fred. Blames him for taking his sister away.
Edit: That might not be cannon… not sure exactly where that info is stated.
@@Lily_of_the_Forest This plot point was used in the Alistair Sim edition ,believed by many to be the best rendition of the story. It also included the fact that Scrooges mother died giving birth to him.
@@Lily_of_the_Forest It isn't canon to the book. We only know that his sister, Fran, died at a young age, but after she gave birth to Fred.
@@Lily_of_the_Forestthey hint at it in the book. Not sure if she died on Christmas or but
One of the best portrayals of Scrooge, for me. Michael Caine playing it straight and like he would if he were on a stage in London or something absolutely makes this film. Kermit as Bob Cratchet is also brilliant. Every time he says that life is made up of meetings and partings makes me cry. Thanks for this lovely reaction!
That was Michael Caines condition for being in this movie.
@@Gundam944 It really demonstrates what an accomplished & talented actor he is, because most people would tend to drift into camp just because they're acting against the muppets, but he maintains that classic acting technique and serious believability throughout.
@@CPTDoom I couldn't have said it any better myself.
Any time a later fan asks me to explain why a generation got so hooked on the Muppet universe, I explain that one of the two best lines that explain the odd rules of their universe is the scene at the beginning where the street cart vegetables join in on “Here Comes Mr. Humbug”, and Frank Oz as the vendor ad-libs “See? Even the vegetables don’t like him!” 😄
Perfect examples to be sure!
Michael Caine played his roll completely straight despite playing against puppets and it totally makes this movie.
Also, if this version didn't have Belle's song you really need to look it up on RUclips. It is my favorite of the whole movie, but they tend to cut it out for whatever reason.
Absolutely. It's a shame he booted up the wrong version. Belle's song is completely necessary and has what I think is the best bit of acting from Caine in the whole movie. At the last bit of the song, when his voice cracks... heart breaking.
Apparently Disney cut it out because it was long and didn't have any Muppets, so they didn't think kids would sit through it. Now Disney+ has the whole movie with it including in the Extras section.
@@ShadowyFox_86 Yes they added the full-length version about 28 days after I recorded my reaction. I'm just glad it's there now. :)
You absolutely hit that nail on the head: "They could've phoned this in, but they made something fantastic." My favorite rendition of the story, hands down!
This is my favourite Christmas Movie! Gonzo and Rizzo are everything and the songs are just wonderful. My sister and I watch it together every year - we have since we were kids - and my niece has started watching it with us too. Just a perfect film, thanks for reacting to it.
My boyfriend and his cousin have a tradition of watching this after Thanksgiving. So of course its my tradition now too.
be careful, I had a tradition of watching this every day around Christmas when I was a kid, my wife not so much. We've been married for over 20 years and our 3 kids love the family tradition of watching this movie pretty much every day from thanksgiving to new years. her, still not so much lol.
This was INCREDIBLE! What is YOUR favorite version of A Christmas Carol?
A scene was removed from A Muppet Christmas Carol with a song called "The Love is Gone" If you didn't see that scene with Scrooge and Belle I highly recommend it. It ties the plot together with the song at the end being more impactful. This was my favorite version of the tale.
My favorite is the 1951 version with Alastair Sim.
The Disney cartoon version ❤️
My favourites are this version, & the one with Patrick Stewart & Richard E. Grant from 1999 (the latter is one of the most faithful adaptations of the book I have ever seen).
The 1951 version with Alistair Sim is my favorite, but there's a warm little spot in my heart for the 1979 American Christmas Carol starring Henry Winkler. 💓
This movie was done by Caine as kind of gift to his then young kids, the same reason he was in Cars 2 for his grandkids,
One of the funniest and also one of the cutest Muppet movies ever made.
Aww, Steven Mackintosh is so little in this film. He makes for such a cute nephew Fred.
There are so many things to love about this movie. It feels so damn Christmassy, Michael Caine knows exactly how to play the part in this kind of adaptation, Paul Williams once again writing the music for the Muppets, and that Ghost of Christmas future is my favorite take on that particular ghost.
I love this movie so much! I miss the song Belle sings to Scrooge in the original version. Apparently they took it out for the DVD release and never put it back in because they lost the footage, but it’s on the VHS release.
Edit: they’re remastering the movie for 4K and they found the lost footage and it’s going into future releases, but they didn’t think it would make Disney+ by Christmas! Such a shame if you didn’t get to see it! It really explains another side of Scrooge.
I watched it the moment I heard it existed, but I am so excited they found the footage and hope they put it in every version from here on out because it really is essential.
Current DVD versions of it have the song included, but for some reason only on the Fullscreen version and not the Widescreen version.
@@PKHalford I believe the reason is that they had lost the original footage until recently so they couldn't restore the widescreen, but they will be doing so for the 30th anniversary release this year.
A wonderful version of the story - one of the very best - which perfectly balances Dickens and Muppets.
It was also one of the first films to feature digital effects. The way Marley's face emerges from the door knocker, and that swirl when Christmas Yet To Come leads Scrooge away. They were amazing on the film's release. Still are!
What makes it is the performance of Michael Caine. He takes it totally seriously.
Love the Muppets!! Treasure Island also great.
Big love Chris!! Enjoying the content enormously
100% His performance is why this movie excels!
This is my all time favorite telling of A Christmas Carol... Michael Cane gives it everything. Jim Henson is smiling somewhere.
Kermit’s saying of how life is made up of partings is extra sad with the context that Jim Henson had died recently and this was the first production of Muppets without his hand in it. This line could almost be read as a goodbye to Jim.
I just love the awe and enjoyment you and everyone I see get out of these movies. I grew up with all these movies you are watching for the first time now. I still get the same excitement and enjoyment out of these.
I fucking love this movie, it makes me cry and fills me with so much nostalgia. I grew up watching the Swedish dub, but now I enjoy the og.
This is probably my fave Christmas Carol movie but it’s hard to choose because they are all wonderful!
I love this movie and I adored your reaction to it. I make sure to watch this every holiday season.
I think Michael Cain is so wonderful in this. Not once does he act like he is just playing with puppets. He took this role extremely seriously and gave a terrific performance.
I’m still shocked there are people who have not seen this wonderful movie. It’s been a part of my Christmas tradition for 30 yrs.
This is the best adaptation of this story. Absolutely fabulous.
I love how the Ghost of Christmas Present keeps saying “come and know me better”. He’s saying appreciate the moment you’re in at the moment you’re in it. “Know me better, man.”
As someone who is a bit of a Scrooge myself (although I limit my lack of fondness of the Holidays to myself and let everyone else enjoy the season), this movie is the single Christmas tradition I have. It gets watched before bed on Christmas Eve every year
This is my favorite version of a Christmas carol
I had this on VHS growing up. HOWEVER, the most *classic* rendition of A Christmas Carol is the 1951 version with Alistair Sim. We watched it *every* Christmas Eve in black and white. My favourite.
Also, one of the more lesser known Christmas movies we watched as a kid was "A Child's Christmas in Wales". But a lot of Americans don't seem to know that one if I ever bring it up. :\
This is a film I've watched every year since I was a young child. It's definitely one of my favorites.
Such a delight to watch you react to this one! This is arguably the best Muppet movie ever made, and probably the best version of A Christmas Carol as well (although the Alistair Sim version gives it a run for the money). It strikes just the right balance between being faithful to the original book (much of Scrooge's dialogue and Gonzo's narration are direct quotes), and new material (the songs, the Marley brothers, Rizzo's comic relief). Michael Caine's playing the role so seriously against the whimsicalness that is the Muppets is absolute perfection.
The surreal appearance of the Ghost of Christmas Past, while not exactly accurate to the book, IMHO comes the closest to achieving the *feel* of that particular spirit. As the novel describes it: "It was a strange figure -- like a child: yet not so like a child as like an old man, viewed through some supernatural medium, which gave him the appearance of having receded from the view, and being diminished to a child's proportions. Its hair, which hung about its neck and down its back, was white as if with age; and yet the face had not a wrinkle in it, and the tenderest bloom was on the skin. The arms were very long and muscular; the hands the same, as if its hold were of uncommon strength. Its legs and feet, most delicately formed, were, like those upper members, bare. It wore a tunic of the purest white, and round its waist was bound a lustrous belt, the sheen of which was beautiful. It held a branch of fresh green holly in its hand; and, in singular contradiction of that wintry emblem, had its dress trimmed with summer flowers. But the strangest thing about it was, that from the crown of its head there sprung a bright clear jet of light, by which all this was visible; and which was doubtless the occasion of its using, in its duller moments, a great extinguisher for a cap, which it now held under its arm.
"Even this, though, when Scrooge looked at it with increasing steadiness, was not its strangest quality. For as its belt sparkled and glittered now in one part and now in another, and what was light one instant, at another time was dark, so the figure itself fluctuated in its distinctness: being now a thing with one arm, now with one leg, now with twenty legs, now a pair of legs without a head, now a head without a body: of which dissolving parts, no outline would be visible in the dense gloom wherein they melted away. And in the very wonder of this, it would be itself again; distinct and clear as ever."
This movie. This movie was my childhood. Watching it every Christmas Eve and humming one more sleep till Christmas before going to sleep. Glad you liked it!
I can never listen to Bless Us All without crying even as a kid. There is also a song I loved call the Love is Gone that was cut from home video cause it was too sad for a kids movie.
I am off to look it up now.
HEY HEY HEY HEY HEY LIGHT THE LAMP NOT THE RAT LIGHT THE LAMP NOT THE RAT!!!!!! that part always makes me laugh 😆
I cannot express how much I love this movie! My daughter and I watch it every year, and quote it throughout the year.
I've seen it a million times, and it still makes me laugh out loud throughout the entire movie! And still brings me to tears! It's such an amazing movie!
My favorite ❤👏🏾❤
Albert Finney's "Scrooge" is a close second. But, seriously,....the Muppets...!!! 😄❤ Amazing how closely this follows the book. And the soundtrack is a joy 🌟
a film that has been part of my Christmas viewing every year since it came out, it's always in my top 10 of best Christmas movies.
I was obsessed with Animal as a kid. He may be a complete psycho, but he's got mad skills. Loved his drum battles.
Not usually a fan of modern adaptations of classic literature, but I saw Spirited last week. I didn't expect that it would hit me right in the feels.
I never even saw the original spirited 😬
@@CasualNerdReactions oh, I was quite unclear there. Spirited is a present day musical adaptation of Dickens' A Christmas Carol, with Ryan Reynolds as a modern day Scrooge.
Oh yea! With Ryan and Will. I wanted to see that lol. Makes much more sense. I thought you were talking about the animated horse movie haha
@@CasualNerdReactions what a funny mixup. 😄 never heard of the animation Spirit before, but i found that it was done by DreamWorks so I'm all in. I have a feeling that I should see this movie. Thanks for the accidental recommendation!
I have seen both this and Scrooged at least 10 times and I always tear up/get chills/cry. The story itself is so powerful - and these 2 adaptations are so original and fantastic. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!
"If you please Mr. Scrooge, it's gotten colder, and the bookkeeping staff would like to have an extra shovel full of coal for the fire?"
"We can't do the bookkeeping, all our pens have turned to inkcicles!"
"Our assets are frozen!"
"How would the bookkeepers like to be suddenly... UNEMPLOYED?"
"[singing] HEAT WAVE. This is my island in the sun..."
Fun Fact: Before production began, Sir Michael Caine told director Brian Henson he was going to play Scrooge straight. Henson agreed it was a great idea. Sir Michael Caine considers the role of Scrooge to be one of his most memorable (to him).
Touch Passed Fact: This was the first major Muppet project after creator Jim Henson's death. The role of Kermit the Frog was handed down to Steve Whitmire. He said he was incredibly nervous about taking over such an iconic character. The night before he recorded Kermit's songs for the movie, he had a dream where he met Henson in a hotel lobby and told him how unsure he was. In the dream, Henson reassured Whitmire that the feeling would pass. After waking up, Whitmire was confident and able to do the part.
Music Enthusiast Fact: The song "When Love Is Gone" sung by Belle, was dropped from the theatrical release (over the objections of producer and director Brian Henson) at the request of Disney chairman Jeffrey Katzenberg, who considered it too sad for young children.) The last-minute decision resulted in a jarring edit in the scene from which it was removed, and caused some confusion about Scrooge, Gonzo, and Rizzo's reactions. The scene was restored in the VHS, LaserDisc, and first DVD (full screen) releases, but it isn't used in television airings, Blu-ray releases, or the Netflix or the original Disney+ version. However, it is available as an "EXTRAS" option on Disney+. In mid-December 2020, Brian Henson announced that the original negatives for the removed scene had been found and would be re-instated (back) into the film, in time for its 30th anniversary in 2022.
I have always loved this movie. It was the first adaptation of “A Christmas Carol” I ever saw. I was about 3 to 4 when it first came out. Back then I didn’t know it was based on a book. Same with Treasure Island. But as much as I like it, after watching so many versions of it every year, there are just a few things I wish they added:
1. Never cut the song “When Love Is Gone” from the theatrical release
2. Scooter as a background character
3. Additional ghostly Muppets for the Marley brothers’ song
4. Background between Scrooge and his family. Especially his sister.
5. Annie Sue Pig could’ve played Martha the oldest of the Cratchit children.
At 19:48 the shop sign says "Micklewhite" = Sir Michael Caine's real name.
This is the #1 most faithful adaptation of the novel. No other movie does it as well as the Muppets do.
Possibly the best version of the book brought to the screen.
This is so heartwarming, charming and funny! Not only do I always watch this the day after thanksgiving, but It’s one of my go to movies when I get sick.
100% I may crank it on next time I'm under the weather.
Back when I had a time machine and brought Chuck Dickens into the early 90's, he said that this was the *_best_* version of his novel, which I agree with.

Did I say too much again?
Underrated comment.
Watching this again right now cause I need this beauty
Gonzo and Rizzo make this version amazing. Gonzo as a blue alien Dickens is great, and Rizzo suffering is his lot in life.
I personally think that all great works of literature should be done with Muppets (and a select few humans of gravitas), but unfortunately we have only this and Treasure Island...
Caine is one of my favorite actors of all time and this version is fun. I HIGHLY recommend the 1984 version with George C Scott. Definitely my favorite.
Currently 25 more sleeps 'til Christmas!
And counting!
This was the first Muppet project after Jim Henson's death, and the big question was whether the rest of the crew could keep to the same quality level without him. And while all their work since has been pretty mixed, they definitely came strong out of the gate with this one.
They definitely nailed this one!
I always found that showing the little bunny shivering in the cold was a sobering reminder about how we should be kind to everyone, and to help the homeless and those who are less fortunate, every day, not only during the holiday season.
Michael Kane is the best Scrooge ever.
That's definitely how I feel at the moment.
I love this movie. It’s one of the basics of my Christmas. It just wouldn’t be Christmas without it.
Notice the name of the shop at the end - Micklwewhite's? Michael Caine's real name is...Maurice Micklewhite.
Oh wow, that’s a great detail!
Awww, this is my favourite one!
oh I love this movie so so much. You should check out the making of, because it's fascinating to see the planks Michael and the humans have to walk and all the muppet humans down below. If you like musicals, Into the Woods (stage production is on yt, not the movie) & Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat are fantastic feels.
This is legitimate my favourite movie of all time 😁
The Ghost of Christmas Past in this movie is arguably the closest to Dickens’ version of the ghost in any movie.
Love your reactions. You always show how watching films can be emotional and therapeutic. This is my second favorite adaptation of A Christmas Carol behind the 1951 version with Alistair Sim. I'm looking forward to seeing you react to Scrooged though.
One thing mrs piggy gonna do is go to war for her man
Jacob & Robert Marley. Robert Marley = Bob Marley. It took me over 20 years to finally catch that little joke 😂
haha that's so clever! Didn't occurred to me either.
The missing song really added to the story.. and then when they sing "the love we found" that KILLS ME.. I get all teary on that.
YES! Love is found is a very good song, but following love is gone elevates it’s status exponentially. It’s a real shame it was cut for so long.
Merry Christmas, friends!
I only watched it for the first time after seeing so many people saying it's one of the best renditions of the story, and I can only agree.
My favorite version of this story is the Albert Finney version and my favorite Henson movie is Dark Crystal.
Apparently they shot the Ghost of Christmas Past was shot underwater to get that floating look.
Very cool!
A shame that they never include "The Love is Gone" song in any of the versions beside the VHS release. I always look for it every time I watch this movie.
They found the original footage and will be restoring it in the 30th anniversary release! I hope that makes its way to Disney+ eventually
@@CasualNerdReactions Here's hoping with 🤞
My dvd copy has both versions but the one with that song is only in full screen aspect ratio. It's cut in the widescreen version
@The Viewing Room is the version in full frame or wide screen? At any rate the song is now included on Disney + BUT you have to look in the extras section and watch the "full movie" which is kind of silly if you ask me.
My favorite version of A Christmas Carol is the 1951 one with Alistair Sim as Scrooge. This is a close second. Thanks for your reaction.
If you want more Muppets, I must recommend one of the best, Muppets Treasure Island with Tim Curry! Another version of A Christmas Carol that is dearly amazingly underrated is the 2004 Hallmark musical version which is based on the Broadway stage adaption. 🐸🐷🐀👽👴🏻🎄
Marley and Marley! The Muppets are the best!
aw dude this is one of my favorite movies, still. I listened to the Jim Henson biography and I cannot recommend it enough. Also behind the scenes to this and the Labyrinth are usually on youtube and soooo worth the watch. The muppet actors reacting to caine and caine talking about working with the muppets... just so fun to watch.
I rewarched this the other. There was always something different about this movie I couldn't quit figure out. I just did hehe. They kept the seriousness of the original play separate from the whimsy. Brilliant.
That's it! A wonderful decision that sets it a part from other "children" versions of the story.
Great stuff....Thanks!!
Gonzo was my favorite to.
As far as I know, this is the most book accurate movie of this. With Gonzo being the narrator they can pull large chucks directly from the book along with a ton of the dialogue.
This version of A Christmas Carol is so fantastic! Gonzo and Rizzo's scenes never fail at making me laugh. And in case you were wondering, the reason the Ghost of Christmas Past looks the way it does is because they shot the puppet in water, to get that "ghostly" effect with the movement of its clothes and hair.
Oh that’s really cool actually!
A Muppet Christmas Carol got the ghost of Christmas past closest to the book description. I love it. It's described as so beautiful, but Scrooge also fears to look at it's light.
Such an interesting depiction, that’s for sure.
So glad you watched this, it's one of my all time faves
This is the one of the best versions of this ever. It may be THE best.
For me it's SCROOGE! Musical with Albert Finney as Scrooge
Yeah not sure which ghost is scarier, Past or Future. This movie came out when I was like 14 and I freaking love it to this day.
I’ve loved this movie since I was a kid! I enjoyed reaction too!! Happy holidays ❤️💚🎄🎁
Gonzo is the best. Will never disagree with that. :)
now you need to watch the Muppets rendition of "Bohemian Rhapsody".......The "Me Me's" from Beaker are legendary :)
Gonzo really is the best! I enjoyed your reaction to this lovely movie and hope you react to more Muppets! :D
There’s no way they ever would have phoned this one in. They had to do something spectacular after Henson passed. I feel like there’s a lot of inspiration from The Storyteller in this.
I enjoyed this and your reaction so much. Took me back to me and my kids childhood ☺. This GenXer is still a huge Jim Henson fan ❤
Best Xmas film of all time.
Fun fact,…Michael Caine loved the script but only agreed to do it if he could play it straight and not patronise the Muppets or the audience.
The producers were like, “That is EXACTLY what we want!”
"It's a musical!" I'm pretty sure all Muppet movies are.
Shows how long its been since I've seen anything muppets haha.
The Ghost of the Past is perfectly rendered from the text. A shifting, ageless child apparition made of light. Uncanny valley in the best ways.
This is my favorite version of this story.
You need to watch the man who invented Christmas it’s the adaptation about the creation of The Christmas Carol and Magneto from original Xmen films plays Scrooge
The Dark Crystal is a necessary muppets sort of movie.
The ending song was a call back to an earlier song .
We are sorry that you got a version that missed one of the most important parts.
You might have had the waterworks turn on, when you saw this.
The part that's missing out of almost every copy out there. When Disney got their claws into it, they cut this song apparently because it was too much of a downer.
It gives a much bigger impact to the movie.

There was a time when I was sure
That you and I were truly one
That our future was forever
And would never come undone
And we came so close to being close
And though you cared for me
There's distance in your eyes tonight
So we're not meant to be
The love is gone
The love is gone
The sweetest dream
That we have ever known
The love is gone
The love is gone
I wish you well
But I must leave you now alone
There comes a moment in your life
Like a window and you see
Your future there before you
And how perfect life can be
But adventure calls with unknown voices
Pulling you away
Be careful or you may regret
The choice you make someday
When love is gone
When love is gone
The sweetest dream
That we have ever known
When love is gone
When love is gone
I wish you well
But I must leave you now alone
[BELLE and OLD SCROOGE]
It was almost love
It was almost always
It was like a fairytale we'd live out
You and I
And yes some dreams come true
And yes some dreams fall through
[BELLE]
And yes the time has come for us to say goodbye
Yes some dreams come true
Yes some dreams fall through
And yes the time has come for us to say goodbye

Saw your video a Great reaction. Micheal Caine make this movie specially good, I think this is the best Christmas Carol it's made really well. Merry Christmas to you from 🇬🇧. 🎄 🤶 🎅 🎄
As a kid I saw the Classic classic version done by Gearge C, Scott a great actor but it wasn't my cup a tea but when this came oout I loved this classic again. I have always watched the Alber Finny version ( a musical) set in Victorian times but could not really enjoy the George C, Scott version.
Awesome pic I forgot how much I love the version. and yes Bill Murrays Scrooged is top notch. :)
Great reaction Chris!!! If you get a chance, check out Dickensian (2015-2016). It's a British drama series based on the works of Dickens, viewed from a different perspective. You might not be able to react to it on your channel, so you may have to watch it on your own. It would be more than worth it, whichever way you can watch it.
Hey where did you watch this movie from? Because there is a deleted song scene.
