The Alien trailer is still one of the best ever.
There's no dialogue in it and nothing gets spoiled (too much).

When I was 5 years old in 1990, HBO was running Alien, Star Wars, and Spaceballs regularly. I never watched movies in full, just in pieces between playing with my toys and running around. So I'd get the three confused, mixing scenes from movie to movie. I'd watch Alien and expect the little alien to start dancing in the chestburster scene. Stayed confused for years until I was able to mentally separate the three.

The most interesting thing about Alien 4 is the french director. His previous movie was The City of The Lost Children which is a must watch for diversified film knowledge. Its a very stylistic and freaky movie. Its also Ron Perlman’s first staring role. He brought back Perlman and Pinon for Alien 4. You can also see much of his signature filming style like the use of fish lense etc.. Watching City of the Lost Children and then Alien 4 makes it a more interesting movie. DO IT!

EXACTLY! Rewatching it after gaining an appreciation for Jean-Pierre Jeunet's films was a game changer. Now I really enjoy it. Is it Alien/Aliens good? Not quite, but it stands out on its own quite well if you view them more like an anthology series with different directors, each with their own signatures.

Of the directors cut, the cocoon scene near the end is the one scene I like. While I understand the point of view that it interrupts the pacing, I actually think that splicing that moment into a frenetic escape sequence is a chilling reprieve.
And while I get that some find that the deleted "crab walk" scene to be goofy, I think that taken alone it is jarring in so far that we cannot yet figure out the Alien's strange and bizarre behavior.
The mystery and ambiguity surrounding the origins of both the Space Jockey and Alien species, their motivations, and their reproductive cycle is something which makes Alien such an effective film.
There is always nuance lost in subsequent films when they try to explain everything away.

In 1979, the VCR wars had been won by VHS, but I used them to time shift regular TV shows of the time. I saw "Alien" in the same ex-Cinerama theater that had shown "2001: A Space Odyssey" (1968). TV and print advertising used they mysterious line: "In space nobody can hear you scream." The slow appearance of the line segments making up the title raised the tension bit by bit. The appearance of the "Nostromo" had a reassuring "Star Wars-y" feel that was undercut by the claustrophobic, all-tubular interior. Sigourney Weaver was "the new kid on the block," among veteran character/leading man actors. "Third Officer Ripley" in this and the next movie became, along with Linda Hamilton's "Sarah Connor," Badass Heroic characters. All in all, a movie that has stood the test of time, scaring naive RUclips viewers ever since.;)

I was 11 when I saw Alien in theaters in 1979! Man time flies. The tv ads were creepy, the poster iconic and one of the best taglines ever. The 18” Alien action figure, was when I first decided to display and not play, with a toy! Wish I still had it.

    Some random fun facts.
First, Dark Horse Comics eventually published a hardcover a few years ago that is a graphic novel adaptation of o'bannon's original script and story idea.
Two, for decades Dark Horse Comics carefully curated the setting. They published Books and Comics that explored aliens, predator, Robocop, and Terminator.
With regards to alien, the idea was that the engineers were one of the oldest species in the universe, supremely arrogant, and used the entire galaxy as their plaything. In one of the early novels published, people's travel to a world where they find that the engineers have been harvesting the aliens and placing them on other planets, I believe the logic was to see what they would evolve into on different worlds.
The Predators also seed worlds because they need to find things to hunt. They will drop off some alien eggs on a planet and then travel back some years later to find out what they can fight.
Dark Horse Comics also did an adaptation of the original script for Alien 3, Earth hive. Which was also adapted into a novel.
Then 20th Century Fox was purchased by Disney, Disney ended all of the contracts and brought everything in house, and now technically the alien queen is a Disney princess and I bet you the bottom dollar they will eventually put out a comic like that.
Finally, Ridley Scott is a hack. Everything he's ever done that is really popular, is something that he adapted from somebody else or had a lot of really qualified people working with him. Blade Runner was a product of Philip K dick, and if nobody had stops Ridley Scott he would have had Decker be an Android which defeated the purpose of the original story and the movie in terms of themes. What stands out most in that movie is the set design and the acting, not anything that Ridley Scott put in.
Alien is the product of O'Bannon, and I agree with your co-host in that it is a crime that he is not more heavily credited with it.
I say that because when he decided to do Prometheus and Covenant with linderhof, he claimed that he was making science fiction great again and restoring his franchise. The result is scientist that act like idiots, and the fact that the alien menace is because of a horny Android

I have a hard time giving a specific rank to anything I really like, but Alien is absolutely my favourite movie and has been since I was young... Caught it on TV and I think I was maybe just under 10 years old. It scared the daylights out of me but then I fell in love with the movies, I still enjoyed Alien 3 for what it was... Alien 4 came along at the right time, saw it in theatres and loved it because it was the first I was actually able to see on the big screen. The love of the 4th movie isn't there anymore, as I've aged from angsty edgy teen to adult its faults jump out to me too much to enjoy it properly despite the fact it may have some neat ideas. Anyway, just felt like sharing that. I still watch Alien every year for Halloween, and I usually try to sneak Aliens in somewhere throughout the year.

Alien 3……May…….got it. You guys ever play the Alien vs Predator Capcom did? It was basically Final Fight with Predators, Dutch, and a Japanese Ninja robot.

    I enjoyed Prometheus.
I saw Covenant with a few friends in theaters after a few drinks, and it’s the only movie I’ve ever fallen asleep to in the theatre

The self destruct is 10 minutes long. The 5 minutes is the cutoff for cancelling it. But, yeah, an hour would be nice. Also, Sigourney Weaver had actually suggested to be naked in the end of the film. However, Ridley Scott decided to keep her in underwear.
