My parents took me to go see The Thing at the drive in theater that summer it came out. I was 6 going on 7 and this film absolutely scared the sh*% out of me. I still remember it like it was only yesterday. It definitely is one of my favorite films of all time. It’s also my favorite John Carpenter film. And obviously it’s my favorite horror film. 4. Escape From New York
    5. Escape from L.A. (guilty pleasure)
The practical effects in The Thing mostly still hold up really well.
One of the shots of Norris' body clearly looks like an effect and Windows being lifted into the air by the alien Palmer looks really silly.

In the summer of 1982 somewhere around my eighth birthday. Mom and Dad took my brother and I to see TRON. The Stone family unit never went to the movies to see just one. After the TRON matinee, we loitered around the lobby a bit... Then ducked into John Carpenter's, "The Thing." I remember my dad saying, "John Carpenter? He did Halloween didn't he?" My parents were the ones that always got dirty looks for having their children in situations that might be deemed, "inappropriate".
I remember my Mom squeezing my hand really hard during the blood sample jump scare. Knowing that she was frightened made me even more scared. But I never looked away or covered my eyes. My 11 year old brother watched the inside of his hands for the whole movie. The Blair monster reveal pushed my flight reflex and I ran out of the theater. My mom caught up with me in the lobby, "Are you ok?" I remember playing it off like I had to go pee... I didn't want to admit that I was scared cuz I didn't want to worry her. It was one of the most vivid experiences of my young life never to be forgotten...
The Thing will always be in my top ten.

If you've seen it, you know what I'm talking about. As a young Carpenter/Snake fan I almost had a heart attack because I had no idea it was even in the works...it was all I could think about and I counted the days...
...and the final result did not disappoint! Hahaha! I STILL submit that both films make the perfect one-two-cheese punch of awesomeness that I enjoy on repeated viewings and blast the shit out of their scores and soundtracks. The Paramount One-Shot and the CrossGen comics where Snake steals the JFK limo weren't bad, either, back in the day. I still have the Snake WANTED poster that was a giveaway at the 2006 San Diego Comic-Con hanging in my office and it kills me how many folks haven't seen these flicks...

I saw Big Trouble in Little China for the first time about 3 years ago and I loved it - if I had seen it back in the 80's, it definitely would have been one of my childhood favorites!

I somehow stumbled upon "Thing" in 1984 when I was 7 years old. It was a 9 inch black and white tv. It BLEW MY F@CKIN MIND! I remember my moms boyfriend coming home and asking me, "what the heck are you watching kid?" I still dream of spider heads. Gr8 memory. I have always wondered what channel it was on (of the 3 😂). Rabbit ears 4 life.

The one I've been re-watching a lot lately is The Fog. There is something haunting about where the shore meets the sea (hell, every lighthouse in America is believed to be haunted) so setting a full-on ghost story in a coastal town is all kinds of creepy goodness.
I think Carpenter's best is probably Memoirs of an Invisib- oh wait, ones I've actually seen... I'd have to say Halloween. That film is ground zero for the slasher sub-genre. It created or perfected tropes that other films in the genre are still riding the coattails of decades later.

The Thing is by far his best. Someone's Watching Me is a Hitchcockian type thriller. Quite suspenseful, & its worth watching.

Still blown away that I had slept on this movie for so long. I was confusing it with Swamp thing so I thought I had already seen it before. Just watched all 3. I liked them all tbh but the 82 one inspired so many horror tropes that I can see now. Even like Half Life and Deadspace extc.

    This episode is fantastic!
John Carpenter is my favorite director. More than Lucas, Romero, Darabont, Cameron, Hitchcock & Spielberg combined. He's the only director of whom I own all of their movies.
For years, I secretly wanted to write a synopsis of each Carpenter film, send them to James so he could use them for Monster Madness: Carpenter-thon. The problem was he once commented that it would be weird for him to read something in his voice written by someone else. The other problem is I'm no writer.
My plan would have been a review of all 21 movies, then review Masters of Horror: Cigarette Burns & Pro-Life, then a deep-dive into various books (not limited to his Tales for a Halloween Night and Asylum comics), and finally, his musical career. That would cover all of October.
    My Top 5 Carpenter...
    1. The Thing
    2.Halloween
    3.Big Trouble in Little China
    4.In the Mouth of Madness
    5.The Fog
P.S. Crystal reminds me a lot of a girlfriend I had in Grade 12. She is sensational!

Mouth of Madness was aired in my local town own channel (you had to align the antennas to get it work) I just caught it by accident, man it was totally insane, I was in shock for days! The Thing I watched also by accident when I was 12, saw Aliens at 6, Alien at 10, so I already had the stomach for it, or I just thought, after the dog scene I turned the TV off and grabbed the most comforting child's book from the shelf in hope to get some sleep at night XD

There's a channel called thebrb30000 that stuff video discussions on John Carpenter movies.
He stated that The Thing was perhaps the ultimate John Carpenter film for horror enthusiasts while Prince of Darkness may be the ultimate John Carpenter film for *fans* of John Carpenter.

Probably his best movie. Definitely his most iconic if your a gamer. You know what? I would love another thing game or a thing guest character for mortal kombat. And when the character wins a fight it can take off its mask and be Blair, mcready, or childs. Keith david returned as spawn for mortal kombt 11 so there. The character can mutate, use weapons from the movie, and have movie death fatalities. I'm not a game developer but there's an idea.
