@@malject121 how was it cutting in to AVGN time exactly? Could it possibly be because he wanted to expand to other ideas for his friends to do while he takes a break?
I love how you mentioned that the scene everyone remembers from this is the cable scene as that is legitimately the only thing I remember from this movie.
I just want to say that I think the flashback scene would’ve been more effective if they had Francesca continue singing Senza Fine on the stage until Katie dies and she goes to the cargo hold, that would’ve been really creepy
This movie is such a guilty pleasure of mine. The logic of why the captain was the only one chopped across the face was completely lost on me back then. The vague undefined ghost powers the ship or the demon possessed never crossed my mind. It was just pure pop corn horror fun
Part of the problem is that the script was different and more psychological. It was changed by producer Joel Silver after 9/11 thinking audiences wouldn't want a movie exploring the darkness within humanity. Fun fact: that earlier script, titled Chimera (the original name for the ship), was what the cast signed up for.
I've read the original script and it sounded like it would have been a phenomenal movie. The actors were NOT happy about the script change after signing the contracts, I remember that.
the opening is generally regarded as the best part and the soundtrack is awesome. Check out the 1980 classic Death ship ( which is the older film Tony refers to), it doesn't have much gore as it was cut, but the extended edition gives us some more gnarly goodness. It has a very shocking and iconic scene, *the blood shower*. The poster of Ghostship is based on that of Death ship, some think it's a remake.
The original script was a lot more blatant about the remake aspect. Apparently, Karl Urban was going to take the place of the Captain Ascher character from the original, committing murders under the ship's subtle, malign influence.
Death ship 1980 and Satan’s triangle 1975 are good cheesy fun, with the former being specifically about ghosts. I like this film and usually will pop it on for a laugh. The energy contained within this review is very cool and I highly enjoyed it.
34:28 "music that's so not creepy and happy and cheery that it's creepy in comparison" AKA Tiny Tim's music; Tiptoe through the tulips/living in the sunlight loving in the moonlight.
The demon guy’s name is ferriman like the ferryman in mythology on the river Styx so the whole thing is a version of that which is why he needs to harvest souls and because he needs people to sin the use of the gold is to make people greedy. I’m also sure he has a quota to buy himself out of hell because he does say that he lead a lifetime of sin and when he died he ended up in hell so to get out of hell he needs to collect souls
So funny I have this on VHS and just watched this last night because I haven't watched it in year's. Strangely though I still liked it . But the AOL commercial at the beginning had my laughing so hard . It's one of those movies that was so cheesy it was great.
I remember hearing that song as a younger kid think in like a AMV for Dragon Ball Z. So seeing how I was a huge DBZ fan I swore the lyrics to that song were. "I am Saiyan, That Broly that Broly's dead".
I only ever saw this as an adult in my late 20's. You nailed it. Excellent opening, fun plot *at the end of the movie*. I almost feel like they wanted to do a movie about demons on a ship but someone decided that wasn't marketable. So all the demon kills were turned into weak ghost kills. They didn't really have the budget to get cool demonic effects either so their ghost budget sucked too. I don't know any background about it though.
By the way: the blond guy is Ron Eldard who was also in ER. And his character in ER was an EMT who was in a short lived relationship with Juliana Marguiles' character.
Awsome review as always and very nice guest !! I was wondering if you did keep in touch with Mcculkin, I like that guy and that could be super nice to have him as a guess one day =) !
I'm the weirdo that loves horror on ships (and trains!) Triangle is an awesome, awesome psychological horror film on a ship. I started playing Echo Night on PlayStation which is old gothic horror on a ship and it's so good.
Your mention of the VHS cover reminds me of going to the video rental store. There were knock-off movies with very similar covers, I guess trying to fool people into getting them instead of the video they came for. I remember there was a movie with a very similar cover to Ghost Ship. It was GHOST RIG. Haunted oil platform, I guess?
I'm actually the opposite on this one. I saw it in the theater and thought it was OK, then watched it on the _original_ blu-ray and loved it (I think Julianna Margulies had something to do with it). I even bought the Scream Factory recently.
About the rats and the flies : on every ship there are a number of rats already present, especially in older days. If left alone on a huge ship with plenty of food they could survive and even thrive for some years. Not sure about 30+ years though..The flies maggots are even easier to justify, since flies are practically ubiquitous and reproduce like crazy. That I can believe more than the rats honestly
A younger me liked the movie for what it was, nothing more than that... i had it on DVD once but I don't have it anymore. When will you review house on haunted Hill the remake and the return to the house on haunted Hill... while the second one is not good I still have the hd-dvd which actually had a awesome feature where you decide who lives or dies.... still happy that you keep the show running. Thanks again. Ps: LOVE THE SHIRT
The souls that left the ship at the end were all unmarked. Those who participated in the hijacking and murders for the gold were marked. Among the crew of Epps boat the ones who were marked were Santos (greed), Greer (lust) and Dodge (wrath). You know they're the ones who are marked b/c they are the three crew members that Epps from the ambulance sees with Ferryman (the baddie) taking the gold into the cruise ship that rescued her.
The rats could mate and multiply and then eat each other. Rats will eat other rats for food. But, the box would be eaten (or have holes in it) as well because rats eat wood, concrete, and pretty much anything for that matter. Tony does a great job with these reviews. I hate that Cinemassacre has changed some things with the channel. I understand why things change. It's part of life. However, Rental Reviews was successful, and as much as Tony refers to it being so, and how he has a new show that isn't as successful, then it makes me wonder why they cancelled the show to begin with. I guess James has a lot on his plate and maybe these guys do to. Between family, work obligations, or whatever else, things change and there's nothing we can do about it. I do like this show quite a bit. I have Binger several episodes the last 3 or 4 days when I don't have to work. I hope Hack The Movies becomes a big channel and Talking About Tapes becomes a big part of it.
😢She was also in Ned Kelly & Darkness Falls. The marked thing, lust is a sin, sloth is a sin, sex before marriage is a sin, so it's pretty easy to commit a sin. But personally I love this movie, I still think it's awesome.

Ghost Ship's poster is a rip-off of the 1980 movie Death Ship which is a slightly similar movie. If you liked Ghost Ship, I would recommend checking this movie out as well.
This movie is so frustrating for two main reasons: 1) It wastes Karl Urban. 2) It's the only movie to even _reference_ the real-life story of the ramming of SS _Andria Doria,_ the most interesting and movie-ripe sea disaster of the post-WWII era, and the behind-the-scenes team clearly put a lot of effort into recreating and referencing aspects of that incident, just for their efforts to end up wasted on a terrible script.
The demon just used the ship and the gold to lure them. He wanted their souls. Probably did the same with the previous crew. The boat will never get fixed b/c it's bait.

It's interesting you bring up video games as it seems the game "Man of Medan" sort of rips off the part where the bald guy watches the ship return to its past glory in part. Also "Layers of Fear 2" takes place on a ship? The first one took place in Chicago.
