- Tony and Johanna review Ghost Ship and talk about how much of a wreck it is. In this Podcast / Movie Review of Ghost Ship they'll point out some the dumbest things in the movie like evil Italian ladies, Inconsistent ghost rules, and a last minute twist that is dumb as hell.
In a remote region of the Bering Sea, a boat salvage crew discovers the eerie remains of a grand passenger liner thought lost for more than 40 years. Once on-board, the crew must confront the ship's horrific past and face the ultimate fight for their lives.

It sucks that rental reviews ended, it was honestly the only thing I tuned into cinemassacre for. Thanks for keeping it alive!
What's the story behind it ending? I just thought it was on hiatus
@@IlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlI idk what happened my guess money
@@IlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlIlI they wanted better numbers, it was cutting into avgn time.. so
It's not rental reviews it his OWN ORIGINAL SHOW DAMN IT! He told me himself. LMFAO 😂
@@malject121 how was it cutting in to AVGN time exactly?
Could it possibly be because he wanted to expand to other ideas for his friends to do while he takes a break?
Tonys enthusiasm is infectious. Somewhere between Bobcat Goldthwait n Dom Deluise is you buddy. N we love it!!!
More like Asterios Kokkinos
I love how you mentioned that the scene everyone remembers from this is the cable scene as that is legitimately the only thing I remember from this movie.
Yes, their greed for the gold and their potential to double-cross and stab each other in the back for the gold is what marked them.
Tony, you are amazing. I cant say this enough, thank you for keeping the dream alive.
Stop pointing out legitimate flaws in movies I liked growing up.
Its fun
Tony must have pulled some strings to get Johanna from the award-winning cultural touchstone that is Castzilla VS the Pod Monster on
It was harder than you think
Not falling by mudvayne is amazing
Him calling it "I Stand" ground my nerves lol
Part of the problem is that the script was different and more psychological. It was changed by producer Joel Silver after 9/11 thinking audiences wouldn't want a movie exploring the darkness within humanity.
Fun fact: that earlier script, titled Chimera (the original name for the ship), was what the cast signed up for.
I've read the original script and it sounded like it would have been a phenomenal movie.
The actors were NOT happy about the script change after signing the contracts, I remember that.
Thanks for keeping rental reviews alive! 👍
I just want to say that I think the flashback scene would’ve been more effective if they had Francesca continue singing Senza Fine on the stage until Katie dies and she goes to the cargo hold, that would’ve been really creepy
just finished this movie 2 years after seeing this podcast,
what a great movie!
thank you ❤️
the opening is generally regarded as the best part and the soundtrack is awesome. Check out the 1980 classic Death ship ( which is the older film Tony refers to), it doesn't have much gore as it was cut, but the extended edition gives us some more gnarly goodness. It has a very shocking and iconic scene, *the blood shower*. The poster of Ghostship is based on that of Death ship, some think it's a remake.
The original script was a lot more blatant about the remake aspect. Apparently, Karl Urban was going to take the place of the Captain Ascher character from the original, committing murders under the ship's subtle, malign influence.
This movie is such a guilty pleasure of mine. The logic of why the captain was the only one chopped across the face was completely lost on me back then. The vague undefined ghost powers the ship or the demon possessed never crossed my mind. It was just pure pop corn horror fun
Death ship 1980 and Satan’s triangle 1975 are good cheesy fun, with the former being specifically about ghosts. I like this film and usually will pop it on for a laugh. The energy contained within this review is very cool and I highly enjoyed it.
Loving these hour long movie reviews, sure they're a ton of work. You da man!
I keep trying to keep them around 30 minutes but keep picking movies that give me a lot to say.
Still laugh at "land ho" every time 😂 You get me hooked from the opening line.
Still though... That beginning? I think we all can agree that it was awesome
Only part i remember
34:28 "music that's so not creepy and happy and cheery that it's creepy in comparison"
AKA Tiny Tim's music; Tiptoe through the tulips/living in the sunlight loving in the moonlight.
WhT up
This is a quality successor of Rental Reviews.
You are again, the man.
Tony, i love that you've carried this on from Cinemassacre
So funny I have this on VHS and just watched this last night because I haven't watched it in year's. Strangely though I still liked it . But the AOL commercial at the beginning had my laughing so hard . It's one of those movies that was so cheesy it was great.
I only ever saw this as an adult in my late 20's. You nailed it. Excellent opening, fun plot *at the end of the movie*. I almost feel like they wanted to do a movie about demons on a ship but someone decided that wasn't marketable. So all the demon kills were turned into weak ghost kills. They didn't really have the budget to get cool demonic effects either so their ghost budget sucked too. I don't know any background about it though.
The demon guy’s name is ferriman like the ferryman in mythology on the river Styx so the whole thing is a version of that which is why he needs to harvest souls and because he needs people to sin the use of the gold is to make people greedy. I’m also sure he has a quota to buy himself out of hell because he does say that he lead a lifetime of sin and when he died he ended up in hell so to get out of hell he needs to collect souls
I just watched this movie a couple weeks ago, the opening takes place in 1962
I can't wait to watch ghost ship in theaters October 25
I liked this one when it came out, saw in theaters and made me a fan of Mudvayne
I remember hearing that song as a younger kid think in like a AMV for Dragon Ball Z. So seeing how I was a huge DBZ fan I swore the lyrics to that song were. "I am Saiyan, That Broly that Broly's dead".
Awsome review as always and very nice guest !!
I was wondering if you did keep in touch with Mcculkin, I like that guy and that could be super nice to have him as a guess one day =) !
You should do some Stay Tuned. It was pretty bad but John Ritter worth remembering here and there. I don’t think James covered any of his movies. 😑
I think stay tuned is off limits in case rental reviews comes back.
Happy 20th anniversary to Ghost Ship 😍🥳
By the way: the blond guy is Ron Eldard who was also in ER. And his character in ER was an EMT who was in a short lived relationship with Juliana Marguiles' character.
Its good you guys keep having these 50+ min "reviews", before i only had Rich Evans and now we have Hack The Movies on the side! YEEEEY!
I love that you’re still making these videos. Thanks bro keep it up 👍
Your mention of the VHS cover reminds me of going to the video rental store. There were knock-off movies with very similar covers, I guess trying to fool people into getting them instead of the video they came for.
I remember there was a movie with a very similar cover to Ghost Ship. It was GHOST RIG. Haunted oil platform, I guess?
Fun trivia, Steven Beck Directed this and Thirteen Ghosts.
It ripped the poster off from Death Ship from '80 with screen hunk George Kennedy
Omg you are absolutely right! I was wondering why it seemed so familiar
I'm the weirdo that loves horror on ships (and trains!) Triangle is an awesome, awesome psychological horror film on a ship. I started playing Echo Night on PlayStation which is old gothic horror on a ship and it's so good.
triangle is hella underrated
Triangle is so good!
not going to lie i think i have the hots for Johanna!
Today is the 20th anniversary of Ghost Ship. Welcome abored
I love how tony is singing mudvayne like its a creed song😂
Johanna 😍
Talking about tapes is my new favorite
yeah this guy is pretty chill
About the rats and the flies : on every ship there are a number of rats already present, especially in older days. If left alone on a huge ship with plenty of food they could survive and even thrive for some years. Not sure about 30+ years though..The flies maggots are even easier to justify, since flies are practically ubiquitous and reproduce like crazy. That I can believe more than the rats honestly
I'm actually the opposite on this one. I saw it in the theater and thought it was OK, then watched it on the _original_ blu-ray and loved it (I think Julianna Margulies had something to do with it). I even bought the Scream Factory recently.
A younger me liked the movie for what it was, nothing more than that... i had it on DVD once but I don't have it anymore. When will you review house on haunted Hill the remake and the return to the house on haunted Hill... while the second one is not good I still have the hd-dvd which actually had a awesome feature where you decide who lives or dies.... still happy that you keep the show running. Thanks again.
Ps: LOVE THE SHIRT
I mention it in an upcoming recomendations video but yeah I'd love to do a long review of it
I remembered seeing this on FX sometime back in August 2008.
Been binging these at work. Nice to listen to. The Mudvayne song in the movie was ripping at the time.
Hey man thank you for keeping this going really appreciate your videos 😊
I bought two copies of ghost ship on VHS this year
Because I bought a VCR this year and bought some movies on VHS alongside
be careful of ghosts Tony
Johanna may not have been in the Rental Reviews but to be in this really...refreshing
i love how long these are so far
I keep wanting them to be around 30 minutes but we have too much to say!
@@HackTheMovies noooo keep it this length! These videos are great for long drives especially 🤟🏾
The rats could mate and multiply and then eat each other. Rats will eat other rats for food. But, the box would be eaten (or have holes in it) as well because rats eat wood, concrete, and pretty much anything for that matter. Tony does a great job with these reviews. I hate that Cinemassacre has changed some things with the channel. I understand why things change. It's part of life. However, Rental Reviews was successful, and as much as Tony refers to it being so, and how he has a new show that isn't as successful, then it makes me wonder why they cancelled the show to begin with. I guess James has a lot on his plate and maybe these guys do to. Between family, work obligations, or whatever else, things change and there's nothing we can do about it. I do like this show quite a bit. I have Binger several episodes the last 3 or 4 days when I don't have to work. I hope Hack The Movies becomes a big channel and Talking About Tapes becomes a big part of it.
Tony is a Gangsta
👋
I love how he change subjects
Fantasy island 2020 sucks this makes ghost ship look like a masterpiece
This movie is wonderful. For it expresses what Governments were and still are.
Weird I just watched Ghost Ship. No reviews. Just you guys, yesterday. Funny.
Man of Medan is a great game that is almost like the story of this movie, but better :)
Keep up the awesome content
This movie is so frustrating for two main reasons:
1) It wastes Karl Urban.
2) It's the only movie to even _reference_ the real-life story of the ramming of SS _Andria Doria,_ the most interesting and movie-ripe sea disaster of the post-WWII era, and the behind-the-scenes team clearly put a lot of effort into recreating and referencing aspects of that incident, just for their efforts to end up wasted on a terrible script.
you know I want to see the movie Razor Sharpe (the movie tape that's behind him)
Watched it when it came out and thought it was pretty cool. Haven't seen it since, might be time to re-evaluate
That song is Mudvayne's Not Falling. I think the album is The Beginning of All Things to Come
😢She was also in Ned Kelly & Darkness Falls.
The marked thing, lust is a sin, sloth is a sin, sex before marriage is a sin, so it's pretty easy to commit a sin.
But personally I love this movie, I still think it's awesome.
I love that movie and I don't care about bad reviews.
I love that movie too
Johanna needs her own channel
Oop.

Have her on more man, this was hilarious and I too have nostalgia for GhostShip not a great film, but like Joanna said if it's on tv ill have it on. Also if i had to choose a better film i would go for Virus. Virus is a better film alone just because Jamie Lee Curtis. Than again if i had to choose between Virus or Deep Rising? Deep Rising wins.
She's on my Godzilla podcast every Friday
The opening segment had me laughing her finding out its not rental reviews.
Good stuff bro, like the sienfeld tshirt
*steinfeld
Ghost Ship's poster is a rip-off of the 1980 movie Death Ship which is a slightly similar movie. If you liked Ghost Ship, I would recommend checking this movie out as well.
New idea for a movie Ghost Rats on a Ship $$$$ !!!!
Death Ship was much better.
It made more sense.
Also the box art for Ghost Ship was a virtual copy of Death Ship.
If they'd used the original script for Ghost Ship it would've been a much better movie.
I read it and really wished they'd made that one instead - it sounded awesome.
Rat ship might be a good movie. A ship over run by man eating cannibal rats.
Virus is a better boat horror movie
which Virus movie?
there are Literally other flims named Virus and im not sure which one your talking about
@@hevendor958 the one with Jamie Lee Curtis and Donald sutherland from 1998/1999 I forget which year
That opening scene is amazing in "Ghost Ship" the movie sucks though lol
Speaking of ships, SPEED 2
Speaking of ships, Deep Rising
I still don't understand why this was dropped from the Cinemassicare lineup... It feels like there are big chuncks of white space on the channel now with all the things that dropped off
Honestly I don't know what James has in mind for the channel anymore. Mike is gone. Rental reviews is gone, the avgn episodes are sporadic at best. Who knows..
I like all the Joanna vids. She's a great complementary reviewer to Tony.
Why doesnt cinemamasacare do rental reviews anymore? It was my favorite part of the channel..glad you kept it going though.
Loved ghostship saw it in theaters when It came out
@@mitchellhedden1978 ya I agree I think James only did a few to give the show a good running start.
Rats are cannibals so they ate other rats possibly?
So I think u missed something not explained but implied.. So the, let's say scavenger of souls. He never intended on finding the gold or fixing the ship. My theory is which I actually think is true is that he used that as trap to get ppl to go looking for it. Only to kill them and harvest their souls, basically using their greed to meet his soul qouta. In the end the ship is destroyed and he can't really die so when she sees him going onto another ship with what we assume is the gold from the previous one. It's him saying fuck u, I still need these here souls bitch. Lol in a nutshell that's my theory and yes it's not the greatest movie but I actually don't think it's all that bad. Take it for what it is and it's enjoyable at least. Also btw, it's not I'll stand.. Lmfao the song is not falling by mudvayne. Also been binge watching these vids since no more rental review.. Sad times but we got tony out keeping the dream alive. Tony is the hero need. Fucking love this guy. Lol 👍😎
In fact the character's name is FERRIMAN (get it, ferryman?).
That too, basically like Charon. Those were coins but same basic principle
It's interesting you bring up video games as it seems the game "Man of Medan" sort of rips off the part where the bald guy watches the ship return to its past glory in part. Also "Layers of Fear 2" takes place on a ship? The first one took place in Chicago.
You had me at Karl Urban is in this! How have I not watched this yet!
I need a Talking About Tapes with Johanna, Kieran, Justin, & Tony.
Just picked this movie up on blu ray. The scream factory collectors edition.... I bought it for my girlfriend... What a horrible movie!!!!!
For some reason women like this one. As you'll find out in the review.
@@HackTheMovies yeah I have noticed that as well man! Looking forward to the review!
I REALLY need to know why rental Reviews was cancelled? I've been watching multiple episodes of Talking about Tapes but have no clear answer.
Think we mentioned it in the last episode. it was getting too hard to do remotely. Views went down and people wanted more james only content
i saw this movie on cable shortly after its release and was in my 20s. till this review the only things i remembered was the opening slaughter and the scene with Isaiah Washington falling (literally) for the ghost singer. the rest is a blur. in fact i remember Gabriel and Juliana escaping from the exploding ship on a jet ski but now im thinking that was from a Thomas Jane haunted boat movie....these early to late 2000s medium budget horror movies suffered from the greatest sin: being boring
You were thinking of Deep Rising
My favorite rental reviews GUY!
Remember that Mudvayne song and as a little kid who was a big DBZ fan swearing that the lyrics to the song were "I am Saiyan, That Broly's that Broly's dead".
Billy Butcher from the boys played the guy that got grinded up in the gears? My brain is broken now. Thanks a lot.
This movie was awesome great ending too!
I like this format.. Johanna is a good sidekick
It was a great movie.
You forgot to mention the opening logos tony they used the old warner bros logo for this movie
I waited till I watched the movie again before watching this episode, Last night I had the same thought about the Deep Blue Sea explosion.😂
Tony funny enough. I’m in the navy and most of my coworkers don’t know how to tie knots
'Does ghost blood not have audio?" Truly a question for the ages.
It’s been on Blu-ray for years.
well now there's a collectors edition!
I was confusing this with another boat movie Deep Rising with Treat Williams and Famke Jansen.
Italians fascismo was created around that time... So for sure nobody on that ship 🚢 was innocent😂
Also ghost dad totally explained everything about how the ghosts can interact with the world 🌎
Wrong decade
Mythbusters tested and busted the cable snap kill in one episode, I remember.
