    "Negative Dispatch, no point." Is one of the saddest lines in the whole game. A ship with hundreds of people is shot down in such a way that there are likely more survivors than dead, but the situation is so hopeless and dire that sending search and rescue would just be sending more to their inevitable deaths.

    There are so many stories where, some brave hero decides to give their life to save the day, and because of their sacrifice, the good guys win, the survivors all cheer, and everybody lives happily ever after. But the hero... never gets to see that ending They'll never know if their sacrifice actually made a difference, they'll never know if the day was really saved. In the end, they just have to have faith. Ain't that a bitch.

    For a game that was one of Bungie's escape game from a contract with Microsoft. Now a days most developers would barely try to make a good game to get out of a contract like that. They updated the engine and built a story that fits perfectly int othe Halo universe video games (yes I knwo it messes with the books IDC). Reach has and proabably always will be my favorite halo game.

      I don't even know why people have an issue with it contradicting the book, considering the books contradicted the games all the time. Like, I don't think a bunch of Spartans running around on Earth during Halo 2, as depicted in Ghosts of Onyx, is exactly lore friendly either.

    • @Rhydgaled
      @Rhydgaled 2 месяца назад +2

      @@nagger8216 I can't recall anything in the games which actually states there are no other Spartans on Earth during HALO 2, so it's only an issue if the book has other Spartans fighting alongside 117 during the battle of Mombasa (it's a long time since I read the books, so I can't remember if they did). The game HALO REACH on the other hand completely invalidates Halsey's surprise when she finds out about the Spartan 3 programme in the books. I still had great fun playing through REACH though; just a shame they couldn't have tied it in with the books better (eg. making the whole of NOBLE team be Spartan 2s and Halsey's "what have you done with my armour" comment being directed at all of them not just Jorge)

    • @nagger8216
      @nagger8216 2 месяца назад +4

      @@Rhydgaled My brother in Christ, does the phrase "The Last Spartan" not mean anything to you? Because that is what the Master Chief was meant to be, the last of his kind. So much so there's literally a piece of the soundtrack called that. You can't have Chief be the last hope of humanity when you have a dozen of your Spartan OCs running around in the background. And the fact they survived Reach at all is such an asspull. No, I don't care about Halsey's reaction to the SIII's, let's talk about how Eric Nylund bent over backwards to ensure the entirety of Blue Team got off of Reach after CE. Like sorry, don't care, nothing will beat that level of fanfic. I cannot suspend my disbelief that Blue Team is just around the corner during the beginning of Halo 2 like that one terminal depicts, it's just so fucking stupid.

    The greatest thing about Halo reach is that the colors, visuals, cutscenes and camera movements are very cold and militaristic which TRULY made it look like a bloody war I also loved how auntie dots monotone voice comments and provides information like "slipspace rupture detected" which adds so much to the athmosphere

    Another thing about this game is the levels of finesse and detail they put into the cinematography, scripts and line delivery. There's so little schlock here and it truly was their Magnum Opus before not only the fall of Halo, but the fall of Bungie as well.
    Fun fact about Reach: there is a second hidden plot in the game; the Zealots that you encounter at the end of the first mission are part of a spec ops legion called the Devoted Sentries whose main task on Reach originally was to search for Forerunner artifacts. After their deadly encounter with Noble team, they were then tasked with the mission of hunting down Noble team and if you pay attention you will see that throughout the entire campaign they reappear again and again most notably when Kat is sniped, Emile is ambushed at the mac cannon, and finally they are the team to take Noble 6 down after many hours of fighting back waves and waves of Covenant.

    Halo Reach was definitely Bungie's swan song to both the Halo franchise AND the community as well, so much so they went as far as making everyone in the Halo community canon through the eyes and armor of Noble Six, since this SPARTAN avatar is you, the player. You helped Noble Team evacuate Reach, you delivered Cortana to the Pillar of Autumn, and your sacrifice resulted in the discovery of the Halo ring, giving humanity another chance to fight against the Covenant.

The story, which places YOU or as he was named noble 6 taking on the first contact with Covenant on Reach with all these awesome and amazing designed original guns, and abilities through the power armor pickups, this blew my mind and showed me that games can have so much more variation within the gameplay loop and story.

    Something I've seen recently about the fall of reach vs the reach game is some people actually splicing the two stories together in a way that makes a coherent, connected timeline between the two. The summary basically being the spartan 2s we know about (master chief and all his crew) are basically kept out of the fight for a while (the start to middle of the game, basically) due to a desperate attempt to stick to ONI's plan to kidnap a prophet to sue for peace. Then the events of the book start happening about midway through the game effectively, basically when ONI realized they had no choice but to field everything and everyone to protect reach because without reach humanity loses the vast majority of its military production anyway. That's just an interpretation of the two that I like because it allows for a view that lets the book and the game co-exist, sure there may still be problems lore wise or whatever, but at the end of the day it's about fun, and that's the view that's the most fun for me.
    On another note, something I love about halo reach thematically is the use of the color blue to indicate hope throughout the game as well as reds and oranges to indicate despair. At the start of the game there is an abundance of hope, and this is seen with light blues everywhere (I specify light blues and will explain in a moment because it ties into something I noticed in the video), in the water, in the skies and in the ice the first time we visit sword base. Then as we fight through the game those blues dwindle, first disappearing after the first major setback when the supercarrier shows up, but when Kat comes up with a plan to destroy said supercarrier, we see the blues return as we fight our way to space and again in space as we look down on the blue oceans of reach...which are being destroyed. Then we get the blue of hope again, not when noble 6 crash lands, but instead when we reach exodus and fight for the future: the civilians and soldiers we save on that mission representing our chance to continue fighting this hopeless war. The blues then disappear again in the next mission where we continue fighting to salvage what military resources we can, then Kat, the member of the team coming up with these brilliant plans and giving us hope to actually win, the one wearing the light blue armor that matches the light blue of hope in the game, dies. After that, the only time we see the light blue of hope again is when we reach Halsey's underground lab and Cortana.

    Another notable small detail in Reach is in the level Lone Wolf. There are corpses of various other Spartan 3s around the level. If you count all of them there are 13 in total. Including Noble 6 that makes 14. This is a reference to the "Noble 14" which were a group of players that tried to keep the multiplayer servers for Halo 2 running as long as possible. It happened a few months before Reach launched and Bungie almost certainly thought the idea of players trying to keep fighting to keep the game going against impossible odds was unusually similar to the last level of the game they were working on.

It said something to the effect of Emile's final line being "I'm ready, how about you" not being directed to the zealot that killed him, but rather a question for Noble 6, asking if Noble 6 was ready to sacrifice themselves for the sake of the mission, and for reach.

    This game is amazing, and definitely stuck with me to the point that I had to play the campaign again (First time was split screen on normal, second solo on Legendary). The ending hits even harder when you see the death of YOUR Spartan, the custom avatar that you chose to be... The only other Halo I've played completely was 3, I'm currently trying them out in chronological order and starting with Reach was amazing

    This is what halo meant to me, a reason for hope, when I'm all alone, a reason to reach out to others and to achieve more together.
    There are 2 things that have defined my life, loneliness, and hope against an impossible and ever closing in despair. They are my favorite subjects to watch and experience, and I can't say why, I just connect with them more than any other subject.
    The Fox and the Hound, Bungie's Halo, Fable 2, Darksiders, Yoko Taro's works, FromSoftware's works, Star Wars 1-6, LoTR, DOOM, and Portal all fit the criteria above.
    Portal, and The Fox and the Hound are franchises that were left to die, and it's sad that 4 out of 10 of these series have gotten sold off and amalgamated into something it was never meant to be, it really just boils down to poor management and bad leadership.

    The Covenant fleet wasn't entirely made of supercarriers. Losing even one was a serious blow to the invasion, and it bought some time to get the information about Halo.

    Halo reach might just be my most played game, at least it feels like it- I made so many friends on it, we played for years and years, we only truly stopped when the servers were shut down. I still talk to some of them today.

    Damn, this video really has me thinking how playing a game that I considered just being bad ass as a little kid could turn into a well written story, finding out very small but yet very important details that add a lot of value to the story. This video gave me goosebumps, love it.

    For someone who read the book and played the game, I was not disappointed. The only thing I would have added to Reach, and spoiler alert... I guess
    Was the legendary space battle where the massive ship that repaired other large ships blocks the covenant salvo giving the UNSC the opportunity to reload and wreck the covenant armada. I will never forget those few paragraphs.

    Kingdom hearts and Halo were and still are my obsession. Specifically Reach and 358/2days. The reason for that is because it takes the perception of those just as talented as the MC, who won their battle. Only to realized they were destined to be forgotten, unlike the MC. A bitter pill since glory is part of what makes it worth being a Hero.

    I appreciate the fact that you bring up the original source material as someone who has read the books up until ghosts of onyx and contact harvest, those books were the shit. Spartans 3’s wouldn’t have been introduced until ghosts of onyx when spartan 2 Kurt trains them after a staged Mia. The Spartans 3’s also don’t have mjolnir armor but a cheaper spi armor. The halo reach campaign is still a masterpiece and the last halo campaign i enjoyed

    Another crazy thing I noticed is that Reach is the literal home to not only the people who colonized it, but the Spartans that were forged there by ONI and the UNSC. No wonder so many Spartans died on Reach, they wouldn’t have wanted it any other way

    Halo: Reach is a Masterpiece we all deserve. I only gotta say one thing: "You know the end from the start. Remember Reach.". Kat's Death is the most horrific out of the whole franchise, because civilians watch one of their Humanities greatest Super Soldier just drop dead so easily.

    This game taught me a lesson that hope will pay off, but it won't always pay off with you. Sometimes you're a necessary step towards that hope but aren't the true avatar of it. But being that necessary step is just as important
