"How much should I wash it?"
"Until it's ready."
I'm glad that moms giving vague-ass cooking instructions is a transcultural experience
So fucking true lmaoo
“How much should I put in”
“As much that is needed”
"Agak-agak" is the way to go
Even white people have "cook it until it looks done" - my mom
My mum measures everything by the dissections of her fingers🤦♀️🤦♀️
the fact that his parents dressed up in a full suit and dress to be recorded by their son about food just squeezed my heart 😭 reminded me of my Viet mom and ba ngoai
when they gave each other food because i love you(??? they are so cute
YEEEEES 🥺🥺🥺
Is that pronounced Bah Noy?
@@SlothhhKinggg nope, that would be bà nội, which means grandma on ur father’s side. bà ngoại is also grandma but on ur mother’s side
@@otdl123 yes you are correct
I love how his parents talk to him like he's still 10, so wholesome
calling themselves mommy and daddy was very very cute
Growing up with an Asian dad and hearing from some other Asian friends about their dads it’s soo nice to see a father that can show his emotions and the compassion and love for his son. A lot of the Asian dads I know tend to be very cold and seem very uncaring about things and to see him get emotional over the letters and show that he is proud of you it just fills my heart so much
You can really see Steven’s parents in him: his humor, his good looks, but most of all his heart. It was an honor to get to know this wonderful family and dishes and traditions that carry so much heart.
Why am I crying?! 😭❤
It curries much heart =]
Steven's dad "where is it? it's invisible". Dad humor transcends different cultures
Three things in this world are eternal: death, taxes, and dad jokes.
@@TheKirbyT Agreed!
First time seeing his rents in two years 😭 adorable. Wholesome. Gooey with cinnamon roll goodness.
In malaysia you have 2 types of dads, want all A or mostly dad jokes
@@TheKirbyT you said it my man
Did anyone else notice that Steven had this major sense of calm throughout the process (unlike the other videos). I think he knew his parents would be proud no matter what he presented :)
I am HERE for Mama Lim! He brings in the toast and she starts shouting, “OMGGGG TIFFANY! YOUR FAVORIIIIITE!” ❤️ and he brings out the main course, “That’s my boy!” 😭 reading her letter “Look at meee! So pretty in 50’s!!” 😂
I love herrrrrr, and Steven’s dad getting choked up reading his letter 🥲 “One word [to describe the meal] for Mommy: Heaven” 😭
DAMMIT, LIM FAM. You got me! 🥲
broooo whyd i start whole ass crying when steven's dad started to get choked up reading steven's letter to him 😭😭😭
I had to choke back them tears 😭
Sameeee 😭😭
I couldn't hold back I started sobbing man, wtf I don't cry like this 😭
You're not alone! It was such a sweet idea to do that for his parents ❤️
i love how personal this was, I'm so glad as a fan that Steven shares this with us
Dad: I wasn't expecting to cry.
Me: Me neither 😭
Ye
Now if his parents ever try a Nasi Lemak that sucks they get to be like “it’s not as good as the one our son made us that time but whatever 🙄” and I love that for them 😂
Not sure how long Steven’s parents have been living in the USA but they still have their Malaysian accent and Malaysian’s “warmth”. Would like to lepak with them. So loving and funny.
? cant tell the malaysian accent
Yeah, didn't even lose their accent one bit. They sound exactly like Malaysian aunties and uncles here
@@sdqsdq6274 they sound so different from him though?
Kan? The accent is still there. Hope you can lepak with them too
@@sdqsdq6274 as Malaysians, we can tell right away
This show is both an exposition of Steven's descent into madness and a wholesome exploration of different foods and techniques. Steven has definitely come a long way as a chef!
this makes me proud !_! am Malaysian in germany and oh how I miss nasi lemak
Agree…
this show is fucking boring
@@Criscrosaplesos 7 comments on this channel and they’re all about how the shows are “bad”? it’s giving fan behaviour lol go get a hobby
I know right, I was shocked when he said he was gonna make rendang bc........ it's hard and time consuming lol but looks like he nailed it!
the chaotic asian family full of love. "start again start again.." "can we get the money back.." & auntie eating with her hands! love this!
I’m not crying 😭, you are. How sweet of a tribute to his parents and heritage. Love how food can make perfect strangers have strong emotions and cry on the other side of the screen.
Awweee the fact the Steven’s mom ate it food her hand is true Malaysian. Proud Malaysian here 🇲🇾 Happy Merdeka Day, Malaysian ♥️
Happy Merdeka, ngam ngam a year later 😂💓
Stevens dad is such a sweet man. nearly crying about Stevens sweet words about him is how most fathers should react, he's so lovely with his wife. And Stevens mom is a gem. this woman is eating the food in the traditional way and just enjoying it with every bit. and she's right, the smell is important. With parents like these two I'm not surprised that Steven is a sweet guy.
His mom saying so lovingly "He's a crier..." is so sweet
Speaking as a Malaysian: Steven’s mom using her hands to eat like a real Malaysian 🥺🥺🥺
She used her hands AND closed her eyes to eat. All I could do was smile.
When I saw that I was like YAAAASSSSS QUEEEENNN! THAT'S HOW YOU DO IT!
I was so surprised and so happy when she did that. She's a lovely mother and a proud Malaysian
That's the same feeling I get whenever I eat good nasi lemak from the mamak. 😞😞 I miss those days
I was like danggg, making me miss home :(
Keith’s face popping up on screen when Steven mentioned fried chicken made me so happy for no reason 🤣
So y’all telling me Steven “messed up” a $100 steak and just bought a WHOLE ‘NOTHER $100 steak like it was nothing?!😳 loving his dedication
To be fair, since it's for a video it's a business expense.
Can we just talk about how in love Stevens parents are?!?🥺🥺🥺 I see so many older couples who don’t show their very outwardly, but they are just GLOWING for each other
stevens parents being happily married explains a lot about him
Honestly it's so nice to see happy families ♥️
when steven's mom n dad trying to find words to describe the dishes, i cried. U can feel they have so much love and they wanna convey it. Now, i will always feel grateful when i get to eat kaya toast n nasi lemak down the road, not taking it for granted.
it seems delicious! i’m allergic to peanuts so I’ll never be able to have it but i would love to try a peanut free recipe sometime
Good father/child relationships make me cry ah man. I'm so glad that you have a good relationship with your parents; it's very heartening
Steven's parents getting all dressed up for the Zoom call is so flippin' cute.
edit: also love Mama Lim's nails
This guy needs harder challenges now. He's already impressed his parents, a Michelin starred chef, and his friends and colleagues. Give him a mystery box or a less forgiving time limit. Dude is killing it.
We gotta get Gordon Ramsay on here now
Get the Professor in there
He needs to be a guest on Without A Recipe 👀
I think he gotta invite the hardest judge to please: A CHILD
Wasn't the okonomiyaki one kind of a mystery box one? He killed that one too lol
The part about not being to even make a sandwich as a kid but cooking a lavish meal for one's parents when we're older hits hard. Actually going in the kitchen and making something with your own two hands and then watching your parents praise it to high heaven is one of the greatest feelings in the world.
Steven's parents are as adorable as he is; his dad crying made me tear up 😭😭
omg as a malaysian im just crying throughout this ep, this is such a wholesome video about family and it's always apparent the level of love and care into creating these but it was esp so cool to see malaysian culture in a platform so big huhu
same! my malaysian ass here is also v proud
Not me absolutely sobbing when Steven’s parents read their newspapers. This episode hit me different 😭 that was so sweet
Steven, I watched the Boba episode first, then decided to watch them all so I went back to the beginning. I am so glad I watched them in the order I did because this was the best one. The pride and joy and love that you and your lovely family showed to each other is truly rare and special. The feeling in my heart is as warm as the Kaya on toast, creamy as the fresh coconut milk, and tender as the 30-day aged meat. I can't wait to see you in season 3. Stay safe and keep loving what you do as much as we love watching you.
I did the same thing and feel the same way!
I did the exact same!
literally the same here !!
Did I cry at the end when they gave the stars? Yes. Do I need more of Steven’s parents in future episodes? Yes 100%
I love how Steven's dad broke out the big adjectives to describe the food. It felt so purposeful, one of the ways he showed his love in this video.
Just when I thought this show couldn't get any more wholesome, you drop this on us? What a beautiful family.
I can relate to Steven's lunch moment story. I also lived in Ohio for a while as a child and pretty much nobody in my school had any Asian background so I was teased for bringing a thermos of, for example, home-made curry rice to school or kids would pretend it smelled or looked gross. But it was their loss because curry rice is delicious...especially when it's made with love!
His parents are way too cute. I can tell he grew up with a lot of love.
Steven's mom's face when she said, "Heavenly." 🥺 Every episode of Dish Granted makes me feel better about the world.
Steven Lim makes me feel better about the world tbh
Nope, I'm not crying over the sweet letter Steven wrote for his parents!
Thank you for sharing your adorable parents with us.
Also kudos for Tiffany and the cute and slightly condescending pat on the back she gave Steven. Total younger sibling energy lol
When his dad started crying, I started crying. They seem like the most wholesome parents who, even if they just met you, would ask you if you ate anything and even if you did they would feed you anyway 😭
10/10 started to cry when his parents read his notes this was so wholesome and wonderful
As a Malaysian i'm glad Steven got a chance to show his love to both his parents and his home !
same here!!! i saw the thumbnail had nasi lemak and i was like 'oh, this is going to be GOOD'
Malaysian here too! When I saw the picture on twitter that showed Steven was making kaya I was like ooooo excited to see it!
Steven should totally do a series of just making Malaysian food ahaha, there's wayyy too much good food here that the ang mohs should know about
@@winksoo Steven should try making Penang laksa :9
As a singaporean, im also happy!
dish granted is literally just a constant reminder that food is love and i tear up every single week
That was a beautiful episode. I was in tears while your parents read their newspapers. So good to see a young man show emotion. Makes you a real ma. Stephen, you are a star.
Dish Granted was an awesome show (I really hope that we'll see more seasons of it), but I have to say, that this was my favorite episode. The love and respect between Steven and his parents was a beautiful thing.
"Until it's ready" is such a mom response...
Not me crying when Steven’s Dad started crying 😭 also I aspire to his Mom’s level of confidence she is so cool haha like yes I am beautiful I know 😌
I feel like its an asian mom thing because my mom is EXACTLY like that too XD
Still trying to channel that confidence haha
YES
THIS!
@@4threset251 there is a difference between confidence and stripping yourself of basic humility
The coconut doesn't fall far from the tree, Steven is sweet just like his parents ♡
When his dad started crying, I started crying.. you can tell Steven comes from a great family. I love this episode ❤️
big 🥺 energy
when he spoke about taking the food to school and trying to cover the smell it reminded me of something a friend of mine once said. they are from southeast asia and never used utensils growing up, just used their hands to eat. they had a traumatic memory shortly after moving to the UK, going to an english school for the first time and using their hands to eat which prompted other kids to stare and make fun of them, and after that they only ever used utensils in public, even now. it makes me sad that my friend, Steven, and others are made to feel ashamed of their cultures when in other countries and feel like they have to hide it. BUT it made me so happy to see him so proud cooking these dishes, using chopsticks/hands to eat, and just generally celebrating their food and culture, they looked so comfortable and happy :) i love this show because it’s so wholesome and i’m always learning about different foods and cultures, Stephen’s love of Asian food is contagious and it makes this very white english gal want to try making them too!! Food really is love and i’m so glad the people on this show share it with us :’)
i hate western people mocking cultures that eat with their hands like do we eat pizza with a fork?
@@maca76 I agree
My folks told me to not cause a disturbance where ever i went. To fit in. So if where i went the people where eating with utensils i have to eat with utensils, or if they were eating with hands i have to eat with my hands.
My bestfriend is from Southeast Asia and I told her if she was to ever eat with me we aren’t eating the way she feels self conscious in, we are eating a homemade meal the way SHE would have eaten it.
Wonderful. His Dad literally demonstrated a Steveness with the sound of celebration 'poop' and 'two gold stars'. Absolutely Steven'ed it.
I teared up when your parents started reading their letters. What a sweet episode! And a wonderful memory made that will last forever. I believe I will call my parents now
"it make you realize how much time your spent.. making food for you"
yep. bukan main basuh - season - gaul - campak dalam oven. numis bagai tp sedap tak boleh lawan la flavour rainbow dia!
steve's mom eating nasi lemak by hand is real mvp. steven, your parents are very positive, supportive, sweet, and cool. now i know where your good traits are from
Two things:
One- Steven’s parents are adorable, wholesome, and need to be protected at all costs!
Second- Well, my mom passed away last week, and today was her funeral. My mom was awesome cook, and I hope to get half as good as her. This was a nice reminder to cherish every moment you get with family. ❤️
Thank you, Steven… I needed to see this.
i’m so sorry to hear that! Your mom will always be looking after you, I hope you find the strength you need to go thru this process. Much love to you.
I am sorry for your loss of your mum 😔 I can relate to you as my late mum was a chef that she adored her cooking. I am positive you be a great cook like your mum. :) Keep your head up
My deepest condolences. I know your mom is happy right now in heaven.
I'm sorry for your loss :(
It's true. My mom passed in February and I'm so happy yet crying at the same time for the Lims for getting to see each other again.
Steven’s mom eating with her hands like a PRO!! Mad respect.
I thought nobody was gonna mention it lol
True, people look at me like I'm crazy when I do it but I spent time in the middle east in the military and have a bunch of Saudi friends that taught me to eat this way rofl
@@T1ddlywinks it's lowkey the most comfortable ay to eat rice. I don't even remember the last time I used a spoon to eat Kabsah or any other form of rice.
It's a very common thing to do on Asian countries. We do too in the Philippines. 🥰
As a fellow Southeast Asian person, when Steven's mom ate with her hands, I knew it's gonna be a legit eating experience. 🙌
I straight up cried watching this - sooooo very precious. Also was shocked to realize Steven is a lefty! I can’t believe it took me so long to notice. What a lovely way to honor your parents and your heritage!
This is my first time watching Dish Granted, and I never expected to tear up at the pure sincerity and wholesomeness of it all.
But don't think I didn't notice that, when they were eating, the same music as Believe Me Maizie from the Hotdaga was playing in the background. I am cursed to recognise it always
Steven out there not just making his parents proud, but also every single Malaysians here in Malaysia proud!!! Shout ou to this fellow Malaysian!!
His parents look so young and are so cute! And they refer to themselves as "Mommy" and "Daddy". Ahhh! So wholesome😊Shout out to the families where your parents are one of your best friends.
It's normal in some cultures/languages for family groups to refer to themselves using the relationship title that the person they're talking to, or the youngest person in the conversation, would use!
@@guiltriple Oh, I know. My family does it to. It's just not something I see often where I live. Especially, when the kids are grown. Kinda felt nice to actually see that here😊
My parents do that too, but it's decreased recently mostly bc of the internet turning 'mommy' and 'daddy' into uh. _words_
As a Malaysian myself, it is common for parents to refer to themselves as "Mommy" and "Daddy".
I was somewhat expecting his parents to call him by "ah boy"
Wow I love how embracing and showing of love his parents are! Idk if all Malaysian parents are more like this, but it stands out in much of Asian communities….in a great way. They seem so lovely! ❤️❤️
this episode is actively making me cry. His relationship with his parents is something i hope to be able to maintain in the coming years.
I, like Steven's dad, am also a crier, and this hit hard. This was so wholesome and loving, and it feels like an honor that Steven shared this with us. Thank you
Stevens mom eating with her hands just like she would at home makes me happy and nostalgic for family dinners like that.
Aww, this is so sweet. I'm really glad Steven got to share a little piece of his childhood with all of us and his parents
This is my favorite episode! Love the Lim Fam! The love they have for each other is palatable and I can't get enough of it!
tony and steven are such a wholesome and iconic duo. i feel like tony balances out steven's food related craziness
This was extra special one- Steven’s parents are absolutely wonderful and a delight :) and Steven literally put so much love into that Nasi Lemak too. I need to now go look for this and try it out for myself!
Now we know why Steven is a sweet person because his family are sweet & genuine people 🥺
you should go try it out, try having it for breakfast because nasi lemak is usually a breakfast dish eaten in malaysia. also have other stuff with it like fried chicken or chicken curry with nasi lemak cause the fatty, creamy taste of the nasi (rice) will compliment the taste of the protein.
I seriously want to try and make this it looks amazing
That rendang looks so delicious! As a Malaysian, I think you did a really great job honouring your culture and making your parents proud.
*Tip for when working with onions:* Wet a paper towel and put it next to the onions while you cut/grind them. Onions make you cry because the things they release look for the closest water source, which is usually your tear ducts. When you put the paper towel, the onion stuff goes to the water on the paper towel instead.
Or if you're having a bad day, just use it as free emotional release.
Steven: 130 dollars
Steven's mom: Can I get the money back?
Most relatable Malaysian thing ever
I love how Steven's mom is eating the nasi lemak with her hands, definitely a Malaysian way to eat😊😊😊😊
If you are not eating with your hands, you are doing it wrong
His parents are my favorite guests of all time. There's that familial love and sweetness, yeah, but they're also more charismatic and funny than any of his other guests. This is the episode I keep coming back to.
I now know where steven gets his 'CHEERS' from before he digs into food. He does it on the worth it channel too! Initially andrew was a bit reluctant to 'cheers' his food together but eventually got the hang of it...
This episode made me so emotional. Steven’s parents are so sweet and genuine. I can see why Steven is a wholesome ball of sunshine. I really love the fact that his dad is the softer and more expressive one and his mother is a sweet strong woman. Most of all, they are still in love with each other. As a southeast asian kid with very manipulative and traditional parents, im so jealous
"Until it's ready" is literally how my mom teaches me to cook. I FEEL YOU, Steven. Also, thank you for the bonus wholesome energy of your parents; now we all know where you get that from! I should go call my parents tonight lol.
well... it just when you learn it, it will be obvious but for many people still unexplainable.
LOL I know. For that matter, I've absorbed it so I now teach my friends to cook the same way. But it's still funny how relatable it is.
I felt it too 😂 my grandma never recorded written recipe so it was always, “how much do you put, mammaw?” And her answer was always, “as much as it needs 👁 👄 👁 “
@@danipink7818 My mom, a central European, when I ask her how much: "not too much but not too little" :D
oh hell ya dude im also malaysian (on my moms side)
there is no way we could ever visit there without my mom pointing out every durian tree she could see on every drive and i wouldnt replace her excitement with anything else, i tried it one and i had a mild allergic reaction to fresh durian, but for some reason the durian candy had no effect. my dad couldnt come with us since he was an only child so he had to look over my grandpa, but we always brought back things for him from the airport shops like a sumo wrestler bobble head that is sitting in his music studio right now, and another was a musical instrument made out of a coconut shell (i think it was called a kalimba but i might be wrong). my mom is the middle child of five kids and my sister was the only granddaughter that my moms parents ever had, so all of my aunts dresses were given to her, some were too big on her but we still brought home some and she still wears them to this day. i think the most memorable dish we had there was these noodles we had for breakfast, which makes lots of sense, like how america has chicken and waffles, some meals are good at all times of the day. it had no soup with the noodles, it had green onions, sliced beef (like beef fajita but it wasnt beef fajita it was just sliced like that idk any other way to describe it), shrimp, bean sprouts, and most of my family added sriracha sauce to it. my family werent the best people in the world, but they were sorta kind and they were always happy to see us (which was rare since we live in america and they are still in sarawak) my mom has never lost even a pinch of her history and her food is great (although sorry for ruining your groove and having a peanut allergy mom)
update: i showed her the video and she liked it!! (she thinks you talk a lot though and i dont know if thats good or bad)
Oh my goodness, it is so obvious now where and how Steven came to be such a genuinely kind and caring person. This whole family is so wholesome.
Steven’s parents are so cute 😭😭😭

His parents are fucking ADORABLE. Love them.
I came here bcs i missed home and just wanted to see how nasi lemak was presented but now im holding back tears. God how i remember how MAS would always say, “and to Malaysians, welcome home”

Honeslty I’d never seen these dishes before, but now… I crave them. They look so good!! Steven seriously outdid himself again
I know right?! This made me so proud that finally we're represented even if it's for our food which is always good. I'm proud to be a Malaysian. When I went to Australia for my Master's degree, I missed the mamak shops, and the road side aunties selling the kuih, nasi lemak bungkus and Mihun goreng the most.
“When you grew up you couldn’t even make a peanut butter sandwich” 😂😂😂😂😂😭
Seeing Steven's dad get emotional over the letter made me cry. I was always by my father taught that crying solves nothing and does nothing, thus I should never cry.
His parents are such wonderful role models!
Who's cutting onions? 😭This was such a great episode. The personal touches and the love he put into the dish shows how much he loves his parents.
