I can try to describe standing next to a throttle up like this. I have been around very loud race cars my entire life, the first time you're in the pits and they're idling, you think, "Ok, this is loud but I can handle it." You cant. You must totally plug your ears or have hearing protection. As they approach full throttle or do little punches like this it will make it seem like you're going deaf for a second and it has probably damaged your hearing at least momentarily without the protection. The other bit of this that fans will tell you about is the Nitro Methane coming out of the exhaust that is the smoke here. You need to stand some distance back typically because it will feel similar to a tear gas if you stand in it too long, eyes will burn, can't take a deep breath, nose on fire. It's an absolutely unique experience and pit entry is part of the cost of your ticket, so no extra fee to go experience it.

Just a hint: When you watch a Top Fuel Dragster warm up, you can always tell when they are about to tap or "whack" the throttle. Look for a crew member or two grabbing hold of the rear wing struts (4:58) to steady the vehicle. That is to help keep it from "jumping" off the jack stands due to the massive and sudden torque of the engine. Also, most teams do NOT do that anymore, unfortunately. It was/is a fan favorite.

When your'e in the group watching this, the ground is shaking. The pressure on your chest and body changes. Your entire body is in sensory overload. It's one of the most fantastic motorsports experiences you can get. When you stand along the fence between the start and finish line, as the cars go by, there are no words to describe it. It's frightening, exhilarating and just plain mind blowing. They go from 0 to 100 MPH in less than a second. At about 2.7 seconds they're approaching 280 MPH. They have to be seen to be believed. If you ever come to America, try to include a NHRA race weekend. You'll be surprised and glad you did. Fans take good care of fans who have never seen or heard a Top Fuel car. They'll make sure you have a good time.

When you stand at the fence line it feels like it sucks the air out of your lungs when they go by.

There is no video that will ever come close to the sensation of hearing it live. I was a tank crewman in the army and the closest I can think of is the first time hearing a tank cannon from 20-30 feet away.

Unlimited hydroplane racing is fantastic. The boats today use jet engines but back in the 70's they used piston aircraft engines.

I forget which raceway it is right now but there is a university about 15 miles away with a geology department. They register each and every run of those nitro cars on their seismic detectors used for the detection of earthquakes. Also, they are producing more power than a 747 jumbo jet at takeoff. I have built and raced some really powerful vehicles in my time but the engines in these are the most outrageous things you will ever see.

Since you watch F1 Academy, I would love you to react to Lia Block driving the Hoonipigisus up Pikes Peak Hillclimb on the Hoonigan RUclips channel.

it sounds unreal it can't really be described. I've been to a few top fuel races, and you can feel them shake the ground when they take off. i don't remember the exsact number but the pipes are pointed up because the exhaust makes something stupid like 1k lbs of down force. might not be 1k but its a lot. top fuel is crazy.

You can never describe the sensation. Find a drag strip near you and see about going there. This is the closest description I can think of. Have you ever been near a street car with a BIG American V-8? The kind that sounds like a tin can full of rocks when it idles. Then as they slowly feed it the throttle windows in buildings start to vibrate visibly and you fell it in you chest? I went to a couple of NASCAR events at Ontario Speedway in California. Imagine a solid concrete slab 3/4 of a mile long, imagine some solid steel s shaped metal strips that have long aluminum strips fastened to them as seats. Now remember that big assed engine we talked about? Imagine 150 feet in front of you 45 of those cars slam the throttle to full in front of you at the starting line and all that sound and vibration travels through the concrete slab and into your body! That is what a single NHRA top fuel/funny car is like.

They truly are fire breathing monsters! They cram so much nitro methane into the cylinders that at idle you can watch the firing order from the zoomy pipes! A couple hours from my place in Bristol Tennessee they run at night so it’s really cool to see the flames and they shake the entire valley the tracks in, can’t imagine the 4 wide track in Vegas

Been to many races and NHRA events. And you can get away without ear plugs for about everything. Except Nitro drag cars. One naked run will take 10 years off your hearing.

You need to go to a race wear ear plugs
    Smell raw alcohol
But the best thing in stands when they take off and pass you the air pressure they create
You'll feel in your chest the closer to the fence the more pressure and its really strong and can take your breathe away few seconds
Go when the drag cars are racing they create this pressure them and funny cars
At night You'll also see the flames coming out the headers / exhaust pipes even at idle and grow 2ft atleast under throttle
Id say if any near you go experience it as your a petrol head you wont regret it
To see then from launch to finish line in around 5 seconds a 1/4 mile
You'll also like the burnouts to warm tyres up for grip
    Cheers mate 🦘🇦🇺👍

    Hi Suzi!
You might want to react to something new. It’s “The insane world of sidecar racing”! The video is produced by Driver61.
You will be amazed. It’s motorcycle side cars at the Isle of Man. They explain the sport very well!
