  • Sollt ich meinem Gott nicht singen? [Lasset uns mit Jesu ziehen] (Should I not sing unto my Lord [Let us ever walk with Jesus], Karg-Elert states that this piece is only usable for the passion hymn 'Let us ever walk with Jesus') Op. 65 No. 22 by Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877-1933), played on the 1898 Åkerman & Lund organ in the cathedral (domkyrka) of Västerås, Sweden. The organ has been altered and expanded several times, mostly by Åkerman & Lund but most notably in 1998 when Harrison and Harrison, Durham, England, turned the instrument back to a romantic symphonic instrument (too some extent going back to the original specification, but also extending the 3rd and 4th manuals greatly, including two very loud high pressure trumpet stops) and in 2009 when Åkerman & Lund made further changes towards the original specification. Here I'm using:
    B. 1, 19: CH: Borduna 16, Dolce 8', Borduna 8'; PED: Untersatz 32', Violon 16', Borduna 8'.
    B. 10, 28, 37: SW: Salicional 8', Voix céleste 8', Fugara 4'; ECHO: Dubbelflöjt 8', Clarinett 8'; PED: Ekobas 16, Borduna 8'.
    B. 33: GR: Gamba 8', CH: Borduna 16, Dolce 8', Borduna 8'; PED: Untersatz 32', Violon 16', Subbas 16', Ekobas 16', Oktava 8', Violoncelle 8', Borduna 8', PED+GR.
    B. 42: ECHO: Violin 8', Voix céleste 8'; PED: Ekobas 16', Borduna 8'.

Today is Ash Wednesday, the first day of Lent, 40 days of fasting and seriousness in preparation for Easter (Sundays excluded!).✝In the hymn 'Let us ever walk with Jesus' (even though Karg-Elert named the piece after the perhaps more well-known hymn tune 'Sollt ich meinem Gott night singen' he instructs that this chorale prelude is only usable with the passion hymn 'Lasset uns mit Jesu ziehen') we sing about following in Jesus' footsteps and fleeing away from all earthly temptations, but it’s also a hymn about reposal, trust, and comfort if we follow in his steps.🚶Karg-Elert captures the mood in a wonderful way, contrasting very dark colours (soft 16' and 32' stops sounding really deep, good loudspeakers recommended!) with mysteriously bright string stops and the Clarinet.🎵Will you observe Lent? I’m personally going to stay off sweets this time.❌🍬

Tragic piece very well rendered on this wonderful instrument.

@@philippelegargean5120 It's so rare to find on organ (especially in Sweden) where you get a soft 32' and a Clarinet, I really love being able to play in Västerås sometimes, although it's 2,5 hrs away. (It so happened that I went to a so called 'in-service training', meaning church musicians from the entire region went to Västerås for two days of lectures and inspiration. I spent the night in church recording several pieces (this was last October) and went to bed at 4:30 am...😅)

Thanks for all the details. Do I observe Lent? I try..but there are so many things to correct..!

That’s strange, when I click on it it works. I know the same link has been problematic with previous videos too. What if you just copy the address?
