U can find a cheap ryobi expandit or craftsman trimmer plus edger and use it for a blade edger as well. It has the same size shaft and same hookup

Which do you prefer the gas or the battery powered one

Gas is always better because you can work as long as you still have gas with you. So, for the string trimmer, gas. But I definitely lean toward electric on hedge trimmers these days.
