    Thank you for the video and the formula. My wife has fibromyalgia and for her migraines she has been using feverfew for years. It works. The bitterness is through the roof. Not quite as bitter as elecampane. To offset the bitterness we add lemon and honey. It gives a pleasantly bitter flavor. Not. We have found that boneset and prickly ash are good for general body pain. You can take it internally and/or apply to the skin where the pain resides. Most of the time you will get quick results at pain relief. I used to have a pound of echanacea root and the root was just kind of chopped up at bit. Not a powder. I used to enjoy chewing on the root. I notice a pleasant numbing whenever I chewed it. I'm glad to see you added it to this tincture. Thanks a ton for your time and sharing this knowledge with us.

    Thanks Heidi.. You know they weren't called bitters for nothing. Medicine isn't supposed to taste good...but it sure makes it easier to go down.
    Linden flowers, Boswellia, and Bromelain are great natural pain relievers, tho I know you don't grow those...And St Johns Wort flowers infused in oil, are great for external pain. We have many options. It is fantastic that you grow your own. This is a fun video.. :)

    For me it is more complicated because I have to translate to Portuguese and I discovered that, here, the same plant can have several names but the scientific classification is the same.
    I was very grateful to know if inside your jars you mix leaves and flowers or if it is only leaves or only flowers.
    feverfew- leaves, flowers or both
    catnip- leaves, flowers or both
    echinacea - leaves, flowers or both
    marshmallow -leaves, flowers or both
    and, I also wanted to ask you if with the dehydrated yarrow if you mix in the jar leaves and flowers.
    I do not have a garden but we still have some stores specialized in dehydrated medicinal plants and then... I can do the mix :) (40 years ago there were many stores, now they are much less because, unfortunately, people prefer pharmacies with chemicals). Anyway, I appreciate your kindness to share with us your own experience with the herbs.
    I love plants and although I live in a city, on a 3rd floor without a balcony, but since I have a big window, I have plenty of pots (10 large ones) ... with oregano, a small laurel tree, a mini-lemon tree , and I even managed to have cherry tomatoes and mini peppers, (parsley/carrots/asparagus and leeks, these 4 love the window), 1 cabbage, lettuce, basil, and this year I am experimenting a raspberry and a mulberry (at least the trunks did not die and already have leaves).
    I'm lucky because the window (not 1 window but 4 in a row) catches sunshine in the morning until the end of the day (it can be open or closed if it is too cold) but strangely, I already tried several times, mint do not like this interior garden, and for 7 years I've been trying to see which ones like and which ones do not like... my "window garden" ;)
    Plants need sun, water, food, love... and God do the rest. The quantity does not interest me, just looking at the plants and being able to touch the earth is the best medicine to give me inner peace. As the sun in winter is lower, it is when my plants are better and in winter it is when I like more to see something green growing :)

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  6 лет назад +3

      That is a really good idea! One thing I learned recently (and talk a bit about in an upcoming video) that making an extract with 3 parts glycerin (food grade and non-gm and 1 part water, it has a shelf life of up to 4 months. Not real long but longer than I would have thought. I would guess keeping in the fridge would mean it would keep even longer. So with that said, making tinctures from this would be great for children and the glycerin has a natural sweetness to it that does not raise the glycemic level.

      This is for something you take internally so while you could, it may not be what you are looking for. I infuse oils when I am using topically. So for a joint and muscle rub, this is the type of infusion I make: ruclips.net/video/oDZCAXxH4U8/видео.html

    Hello great information. With the tincture how much do you take internally or do you use it to make a salve or rub? Also with the children s how long would you let it sit before it would be time to use it. (for example would it sit for two weeks or a month before it would be ready for children.) I love this especially for the kids because they have to much alcohol in the over the counter medicine. Thank you for sharing, God bless, stay safe and have a wonderful day.

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  4 года назад +2

      The tincture is meant to be taken internally and the amount taken will vary for children but not the length of time you allow it to sit. If you make it with vodka or other high proof alcohol, they may only need as little as a drop or two. I have a video this morning about the differences between extracts and tinctures but an extract with glycerin and water may be preferable for giving to children. Or even glycerin and wine based. In which case a bit more will be needed. I recommend you watch that video I mentioned to get more information.

    Tinctures are easy to make into syrups. Sometimes the syrups are easier to take... like with my plantain syrup for my asthma. If I use fresh herb, then I just make the syrup from a very strong decoction (1lb brown sugar added to ~1 cup of plantain decoction), but if I'm making it from a tincture, then adding a quarter again as much sugar makes it good... but it may take a few days to fully incorporate the sugar.

      Yep, I have made a tincture into a syrup before but it is not something I commonly do.

    Me again! I got all the ingredients that I could buy and got two tinctures 'brewing' ... one for Sleep (valerian & licorice) and this one for Pain. My question is, and correct me if I'm wrong, that you said you take some in a shot glass? (Maybe it was the Sleep Aid video). I tried a shot glass and it burned my throat big time. Do you take a full shot glass (which is basically a shot of vodka straight!) and do you add anything to it like juice or something? Thanks. I am looking forward to trying these!!

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  6 лет назад +1

      That is what I said but I did not clarify, I use a shot glass for taking it but I do not take a full shot if taking a vodka based tincture, I only take about a quarter of a shot, which is a Tablespoon, you may even want to use a tsp. If I am taking a vinegar based extract, then I take a full shot.

      Catmint is the general name for various plants in that family, catnip being one of them. I cannot say for sure if all varieties work the same but would guess they should be fairly similar

    I don't strain my tinctures until they get so low that I can't get the liquid out without getting a lot of leaves. I figure it makes it stronger, leaving the plants in there as long as possible. I mostly use tinctures. I might start with teas to test a mix, and if it's good, I make it into a tincture. Tinctures work well topically too, except of course they're runny and you have to rub it on fast or it'll run off. Sometimes I'll also make a salve. Sometimes I make one herb tinctures so that I can take it as a single herb, or combine with some other tinctures of herbs that I use a lot, and not have to wait for it.

      Mine often sit for several months before I get to them so they are certainly as extracted as they can be. There is only so much that can be extracted no matter how long it is left but I agree that leaving it as long as possible is good just to make sure one is getting all they can :)

    Hi! Im not too keen on buying ingredients, if i can avoid it, would a good kids alternative to glycerine be a honey infusion using dried herbs? It should be safe if they are dried, but would the herbs infuse? and also certain herbs like hops and meadowsweet were brewed into wine sort of medicinally, do you think feverfew would lose some of the intensity of its flavor if it were brewed as a wine/mead and not just added afterwards? Im keen to make mead next honey harvest with some meadowsweet as its a traditional addition, but i might try a small bottle with feverfew as well.

    I have a question about the cough, cold & flu remedy. I didn't have, (and couldn't find) marshmallow leaves & flowers. However, I did find the marshmallow ROOT powder. Is it OK to use the root powder in lieu of the leaves and flowers? Is the effect the same? Thank you, dear :-D

    • @RainCountryHomestead
      @RainCountryHomestead  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, you can use the root and it should be just as effective if not more. In most, if not all cases, when the root is medicinal too, it is usually higher in medicinal properties than the leaves and flowers. I did put a link in the description box to some marshmallow leaves I found on Amazon, but they were the only brand I could find. I would have preferred to link to brands I am more familiar with like Starwest, Frontier, or Terrasoul.

      As much as I have studies books, internet & watched videos, you're the first one to tell me the root is just as medicinal, if not more. Amazing! Are there exceptions to the rule? Is there ever a case where the root is NOT medicinal, but, the leaves are? (or vise versa?) I did check out your link. It said 100% "natural" but, did not say "organic", so I understand your statement regarding Starwest, Frontier & Terrasoul. This is why I think about my garden ALL YEAR LONG. I have a limited amount of space & have to pick and choose what I am going to grow. Tomatoes will ALWAYS be my #1 choice, but now I am thinking more in terms of growing more medicinal herbs along with culinary. If I had my "druthers", I'd druther grow EVERYthing I eat. Maybe SOMEday. :-D Thanks again for the reliable info! You are an amazing plethora of valuable information!
      Lots of love & prayers

      Thank you for asking, I often mean to cover these things in my videos but since I do not use a script, I tend to leave out things - o well, at least it means I have another video I can do to expound on such things. After about two months, you strain out the herbs. There will be little to no nutrition or benefits left in the herbs themselves as these have all infused into the liquid. Then bottle or jar up the liquid (you can see how I do this in my cough cold and flu remedy video). I recommend starting with anywhere from a teaspoon to a Tablespoon of your tincture. You can always take more if you do not notice a difference within a half hour. If making an extract with vinegar or glycerin, you will want to take 1-2 ounces at a time.
