Learn so much from your chat ( and utube), it is much more than what I had learned from attending expansive atelier school- thank you so much, this is beyond generous!
I missed the video live, but caught it later, and what really stuck out to me, and why I liked the format so much, was that your responses to the questions, being in the moment, demonstrated how deeply experienced you are and how you were able to share that with your viewers. It was really and invaluable hour. Thanks, and I hope you'll do it again.
Thanks so much Douglas. There's been a lot of interest in my doing it again. So I think we will. We've figured out all the tech now. Almost. I might have to get a new computer to deal with how intense the processing is during those sessions. But I enjoyed it.
WOW…..I have to say after 20 years painting I have learned more in this hour than I have in 20 year! Thank you thank you … you just made my art journey be equipped with a treasure chest of knowledge. Can’t wait to share……
ian roberts, you are awesome. learnt more from you in 10 mins than 2 years of my high school art class. THANKYOU, after 50 + years have decided to dust of my brushses,
Unfortunately I wasn’t able to be here live but I certainly viewed the video with great interest and I am working my way through the comments. This is amazing! Thank you so much for your time ! Thank you also to your wife and Robert for helping to make this possible! I learn something new every time I see one of your videos but the live session is just so wonderful… I do hope you will repeat the live session. Again many thanks from northern Ontario!
I didn’t catch this live but I enjoyed it immensely. I’m a beginning painter and struggle with finding the right colors so I loved the idea of deliberate practice and doing just black and white value paintings. I struggle with trying to determine if I have the same value of different colors. I also learned a lot about creating depth in a painting and a point of interest. You are such a good teacher of painting. There are so many talented artists on RUclips but they aren’t necessarily good teachers. You are an extraordinary teacher, I appreciate the depth of knowledge you bring to your videos. If you do this monthly I will make the effort to watch it live. Also if you did a series of lessons showing students how to practice a skill while having a finished painting at the end of the process, I would buy each and every lesson available. Thank you for all you do.
I absolutely love this! Ian, you are such a wonderful person, I love to hear your thoughts and your approach to painting and to nature. Even after attending the whole classes of 2022 (Drawing, Brushstrokes, Color), I still get so much out of this video. Wonderful stuff. Thank you Ian for sharing this with us.
Hi! Your Iive program is terrific! You are you as always and not all scripted. I'm one of the watercolor people. My husband does oils. We both appreciate and enjoy your weekly videos. 😊
Hello I've been following your husband for a few months now he's very knowledgeable. I am in Maine up around Canada and I am a wannabe artist. I have chosen acrylic because it's inexpensive and easy to get however I have wanted to transition into watercolor so here I am thank you very much.
Carole from Australia Wow this is so fantastic.. so many questions many that I had too so.. It has been so informative Thank you so much Yes would love to see more of this .. Just GREAT!
Thank you so much! This was great; please go live again! I missed the live session as I was traveling. but just finished watching last Saturday's video. Of all the artists out there you are my favorite, not only for your talent but also for your enthusiastic, warm personality and your obvious love of painting and sharing your knowledge. Your Tuesday videos are so helpful - thank you! You and Anne are a lovely couple!
I missed the live session but was able to catch up later with it being recorded. I am i am in Tasmania, Australia. Thank you so much Ian, the session was very helpful. I ended up with two pages of notes and have underlined four exercises to try. You are very generous with your time and it is most appreciated.
I was able to catch the replay and loved this format. For me whenever you give information, even if I had already heard it before, I still learn from it or I better understand what you're talking about so thank you for a great video.
This was very helpful. I especially like when you show the development of a composition from initial idea through finalized idea. Also like analysis of old masters, what's working and what's not. You touched on many important subjects I hope to see addressed in future - like watercolor. THANK YOU!
Thank you, I really hope that you're encouraged and do it again. I was there 'live' and my first takeaway was the suggested exercise of painting in black and white and adding just yellow ochre - and maybe one spot of colour. I worked from a pencil sketch (a place that I vaguely remember from my childhood) and my 10 x 14 sketch in oils took just 30 - 40 mins. WOW! The result was amazing and what a brilliant way to get to grips with how values work. Thanks again Ian
Hi Joanne, That is so good to hear. And you're absolutely right you can save so much time getting things organized in your mind first. Delighted your painting went so well.
Value, Thank you Joanne toi! This was something I noticed too! Thank you for sharing your excercise experience with us! I’ ll try this too! I find value difficult !/🎨🖼
A great live event - attended by many from around the world - so many questions (including mine) answered and clarified - thank you - and I, like many others I'm sure, are all truly grateful indeed for the expertise and experience you so generously share. Looking forward to the next one - and indeed the continuing regular Tuesday videos that have made such a profound difference to my art. (from UK)
Thanks Ian, really enjoyed the last thoughts on developing your own passion. I love trees but have struggled to find “the point of interest”. Now I feel free to paint their sense of grandeur and wonder. Thanks.
HI Sue, I"ve been drawing the coral trees near me. And I just focus on the trunk, like individual portraits of old and scarred humanity. So there may even be a part of trees that really grabs you. All the best.
That was so interesting. So much covered in one hour. I probably would have thought of each question over a very long time so I think that this audience participation is an excellent format. But your Tuesday demonstrations are also extremely valuable as they are more focused on a particular subject. Thanks Ian , I just love your down to earth way of passing on your passion for painting to us. Can’t wait for Tuesday🤗
Thank you for loving to teach, it shows in all you say and do. I especially appreciate your photographs of other artists' paintings and explanations of their compositions and techniques.
Great job on your 1st live event Ian ! Please do these events more often because it was definitely very helpful !! Can't wait for your next one! Thank you!
This was so wonderful, like having a live seminar with you. Thank you all for undertaking this. Bravo! And I am filled with anticipation for your watercolor related session. Thanks in advance for that.
Watched it later. Yes please do another one of these. You address so many inner voices and make them audible and validating all our concerns! Thanks so much for doing this!!
Hello sir, i just want to say thank you for this amazing content you're sharing! These videos are gems for someone like me living in a collapsing country. Greetings from Lebanon.
Thank you so much, Ian! for sharing so much of knowledge which is very much worth and necessary learning for the person who never went to art school, And I also love your teaching style!
Thank you Ian (and Ann) for a most informative and enjoyable! live session. Even though I could not watch live, because of the time difference with Australia, the spontaneity is still apparent and appreciated. Again, thank you for your generosity of time, experience and love of subject.
Awesome, full of knowledge video. This video answed a lot of questions in my mind. I definitely will re-watch it again & again. Thank you very very much
Ian, You have surrounded your life with beauty and bliss (nature, art, TM meditation), and you are bringing the world along with you. We are all sharing in your creations.. Nan Nick says lovely Anne stole the show today
Hi Nan, thanks so much. I appreciate it. Life is good I gotta say. And yes considering her brief appearance I got a lot of comments about how lovely Anne is. And she it. Say hi to Nick. All the best.
Amazing live video. Thanks so much much let’s do this again!!! Your video and all of the different questions will certainly help me on my painting practice. It’s good to feel inspired. You cover some vital concepts over and over and I love this. I apparently need repetition :) Thanks again!
Thank you Ian once again for a very well organised Q&A session, very much appreciated of all the hard work that you put in to show us all of your videos together and now these Q&A sessions , for free. Thank you once again.
Hi Ian ! I have just watched the replay since I could not be on the Live and I must say it was simply wonderful ! I did not wish it to end ..... honestly ! It was so interesting as many of the questions were things that I found had to be cleared in my head and as I mentioned before you have a great way of answering clearly, simply and always to the point ! It was also nice meeting your lovely wife and you make such a sweet couple so thank you for introducing her to us ! I have also heard you mentioning Robert and he also did an excellent job ! All three of you worked as a team and you all did great ! I do hope you will be doing more of these longer versions and picking different subjects and topics to discuss with us ! I am ever so grateful for your time and also for sharing your knowledge with us. Sending you and your team my sincere gratitude and warmest regards... Lorraine ( Malta ) 🎨
Awesome RUclips live - Hope you will do more. Also appreciate the longer form demo. Thanks for sharing a the result of a lifetime of experience! Sharon (British Columbia, Canada)
Bonjour from Paris. I sadly missed the live broadcast but so enjoyed catching up later in the evening. Thank you. And I hope you will continue to share your vast knowledge with us. Look forward to more.
Ian - thank you so much for doing this and all your videos. As someone just stating out on the painting journey, your insights and approachable style are invaluable.
Just finished watching the recording. Brilliant! So much information. Please continue with more Q&A live events. Would love to hear more from you about abstraction and expressionism. Many thanks, sir!
Thank you for a wonderful informative video presented in a very knowledgeable and refreshing way. One of the best I have seen. I am in Scotland and missed the live video but never miss your weekly sessions.
Thank you Ian. I also didn’t get to watch live, but have just watched the recording and intend to watch again with notepad!! I am in country New South Wales Australia and trying to learn watercolour from internet and books. I find your videos very helpful and am looking forward to whatever information you can share about watercolour. I have purchased 2 of your books and I think they will become very dog-eared as I continue my journey. Thanks again to you and the team for making this happen.
Thank you Ian for this wonderful informative live session. I missed the last ten minutes due to an emergency. I just watched the live again and it’s fantastic. You are a very generous teacher. Wish you had an art school I would have been one of your first students. Thank you again and again!
Thank you so much for this informative, instructive talk. I appreciate your knowledge and expertise and your willingness to share this is amazing. I think you have given us the really basic information about many topics. I’ve learned a lot and was especially interested in the composition and value parts. Thank you for your generosity!!
I missed the live broadcast but this was invaluable even on replay. I particularly like your comments on practice -- something I often fail to do but I know would improve my work. I'm a big fan from Boston, and have been spreading the word about you. I really appreciate the generosity with which you share your experience. Thank you so much!
Love your videos! Catching up later to your live podcast. I still feel that composition is difficult because there is so much to think about. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you, I love your enthusiasm. You've covered so many questions. I have to say, the sound effects that go with the movement of your rigger, priceless. I had to smile, I'm also team sound effects.
Thank you so much for doing this live session! The most valuable questions and answers for me were, "WHY do you want a big foreground?" and the answers to how to manufacture atmospheric perspective. I have heard the answers before, but somehow your answers and the pictorial illustrations helped me immensely! I hope you will do another "live" for us! Thanks Again!
I am so sorry I missed the live video. But well still can watch it so interesting all your videos. Thank you for your time to help us learned more every time. I am from Miami, Florida.
Super enjoyable and informative. I hope for more soon and could listen to you for hours. You guys did a great job technically… it couldn’t have been easy.
Wow nice surprise having you live and in person! Thank you for sharing with this 77 year old restarting to paint. And not a little itty bitty painting noooo I had to repaint over an old painting of mine of the Brooklyn Bridge a 36x24"r. It is still the BB but updated the NY skyline, from photos, with the newer buildings all across the top part of my canvas. This part of my acrylic painting goes along with your lesson on atmospheric perspective. With those buildings and just what I needed to hear. I always get paint on the heal of my hand when putting detail in the buildings. How do I avoid this, using a mall is difficult with me using both hands at the same time moving along the canvas? You answered my question by waiting for that part of the painting to dry.
I find you can move around quite a bit with a mahl stick. You just keep moving it where it rests on the top of the easel and sort of swing it a big this way and that. Or what until the paint is dry!
I enjoyed this so much ! You have the gift of making complex things simple. And the content is so interesting, tackling much of what we are struggling with. Thanks a lot Ian for sharing ! Looking forward to the next live session (from France).
Sorry you had a few technical issues to resolve, but you got through. I enjoy your weekly posts. I honestly have to say, I prefer them to this live video. (I missed the live, but was glad to have caught it later in the day.) I have trouble focusing for very long and really get more and retain more information on your short presentations. This is just my preference mind you. You are a great teacher. And, very much appreciate all the FREE instructional posts. Thank you!
Margo, yes. I plan to continue both my weekly videos and live classes, as people seem to be getting positive things from both in their own way. Thank you for watching
Wasn’t able to watch this live, but really enjoyed it all the same. Hopefully I’ll be able to tune in for the next one…I enjoyed the dynamic of this give-and-take very much!
Sorry I missed the live feed! Been a rough week 🙂 I follow you from Tucson AZ. Returning to painting after 20 years away from canvas (I focused instead on metalsmithing) THANK YOU for your friendly, incredibly informative videos! Wish you were my painting teacher back in the 80’s, when I was in art school (instead of the egomaniac I ended up with at SMFA Boston). Have a fantastic weekend everyone!
I had to work Saturday so came to this recording with great anticipation and as usual Ian, you didn’t disappoint. Your wonderful insight and ability to simplify the painting process is invaluable. Thank you for your time and enthusiasm! I look forward to the video on watercolor……😊
This was a great idea, Ian! I couldn't attend it live but really enjoyed listening to the recording. Thanks to you & your team for putting this together. I look forward to the next one.
I wasn't able to join live but really enjoyed viewing the chat...so many questions answered that I had in mind also and by the way I was given a copy of your book Mastering composition for my birthday and I'm finding it very helpful. Thanks again Ian!
Does anyone know the name of the Soviet painter who painted the cafe painting (at 1:00:30 of the video)? I love it and must see more of his/her paintings! Thank you very much.
I could not attend the live session as I’m 17 hrs ahead! But I have just finished watching the recording. So so very informative and helpful as many questions are ones I’d have asked myself. Wonderful idea. It was great to meet Anne. Thank you Anne and Robert….and, of course, Ian. Look forward to the next one.
These are great... live or later! CThis format covers a lot of material ... and just works well. I suspect a lot of folks agree with me on this ..... we will take as many as you can give us! Also your team there is doing a great job too! Thanks to all!
Learn so much from your chat ( and utube), it is much more than what I had learned from attending expansive atelier school- thank you so much, this is beyond generous!

Once again Ian Roberts you have provided a wealth of information in clear and concise language. Brilliant. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it Denise. Thank you

More videos please...I really enjoyed it and learned a lot.
Hi! Your Iive program is terrific! You are you as always and not all scripted. I'm one of the watercolor people. My husband does oils. We both appreciate and enjoy your weekly videos. 😊
Thanks for sharing! That is wonderful. Yes, this applies to watercolor nicely as well.
Great lessons, Ian. So glad to find it recorded as I'd missed it live. Many thanks.
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for watching Jo
Hello I've been following your husband for a few months now he's very knowledgeable. I am in Maine up around Canada and I am a wannabe artist. I have chosen acrylic because it's inexpensive and easy to get however I have wanted to transition into watercolor so here I am thank you very much.
Just loved this!!! You are so generous with your time and knowledge. Thank you!
Carole from Australia Wow this is so fantastic.. so many questions many that I had too so.. It has been so informative Thank you so much Yes would love to see more of this .. Just GREAT!
Thanks Ian-I learned so much today and love live stream

I missed the live session but was able to catch up later with it being recorded. I am i am in Tasmania, Australia. Thank you so much Ian, the session was very helpful. I ended up with two pages of notes and have underlined four exercises to try. You are very generous with your time and it is most appreciated.
This is wonderful. I sincerely hope the exercises and your notes help. Thank you for watching the recording Bev
This was an amazing live session!!! Learned so much. Thank you, Ian, Anne, and Robert! I love the idea of having another live session.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I couldn't join live but I watched the video. It was great fun. I learned a lot and I appreciate you sharing your knowledge so generously.
You are so welcome Terry!
I was able to catch the replay and loved this format. For me whenever you give information, even if I had already heard it before, I still learn from it or I better understand what you're talking about so thank you for a great video.
Glad you enjoyed it Paula! Thank you
I think an hour at a time is perfect. So much information is hard to take in anymore than that. Thank you so much. Please do it again and continue!
Thanks a million. Loved it. You are so generous. Splendid job. I hope you will do it again!
Thank you, I will Steve!
Yes, please do this again! Your videos are so informative and helpful! ❤️
Thank you! Will do!
Thank you so much, Ian! This was so exciting to have you offer a live Q&A!
You are so welcome!
This was very helpful. I especially like when you show the development of a composition from initial idea through finalized idea. Also like analysis of old masters, what's working and what's not. You touched on many important subjects I hope to see addressed in future - like watercolor. THANK YOU!
Yes like watercolor. Glad you liked it. And I was just getting going on the sheafs of questions I had. Next time.
AWESOME ! thanks to you Ian , Anne and Robert , brilliant live video , let's do it every month ! Thanks a lot fo ryour generosity !
We plan on doing it again! It was a lot of fun. Thanks for watching the recording
The live session is a gem to replay and be able to access when we have so much time-difference
(from UK)
Thanks so much Richard. All the best.
The exercise about isolating the problem with seeing values in different colors by creating the 5 boxes is brilliant. I will do it today. Thank you.
Glad it was helpful! I hope you enjoy it and have fun!
Great! I think doing a live class every once in a while will nicely complement the weekly RUclips classes as well. Thanks for watching Therese
Absolutely terrific! Please do more of these.
Thank you for loving to teach, it shows in all you say and do. I especially appreciate your photographs of other artists' paintings and explanations of their compositions and techniques.
You are so welcome Juliette!
Absolutely brilliant , please do it again . Many thanks to you both for a huge success !
Thank you! Will do!
Great job on your 1st live event Ian ! Please do these events more often because it was definitely very helpful !! Can't wait for your next one! Thank you!
More to come! I had a lot of fun doing it
This was so wonderful, like having a live seminar with you. Thank you all for undertaking this. Bravo! And I am filled with anticipation for your watercolor related session. Thanks in advance for that.
Glad you enjoyed it Kristy!
Watched it later. Yes please do another one of these. You address so many inner voices and make them audible and validating all our concerns! Thanks so much for doing this!!
Thank you! We are planning on it!
Yes do it again. Loved it
Thank you Michele!

You did a great job here Ian. so much info. thanks .
Thank you for a wonderful informative video presented in a very knowledgeable and refreshing way. One of the best I have seen. I am in Scotland and missed the live video but never miss your weekly sessions.
Excellent. Happy you were able to watch the recording. The time difference makes it hard to watch live. Thank you
Fabulous! I love that I saw this a bit later, as I could leave and return as I needed to. Plenty of great information
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for answering my question! This was super fun to watch and I learned a lot! I hope you do these again! Thanks
Thanks for asking such a good question Danny. And we plan on it!
Thank you so much for offering such great content for free. We really appreciate it!
Loved this event. I was there in real time and I'm delighted that I can re-watch it. Thank you. I'd love to see more.

Love the enthusiasm. Thanks Sharon

Glad you liked it and didn't even notice I was making sound effects.
Excellent video Ian from Keizer, Oregon. Looking forward to the next one.
Excellent. So am I. Thanks for watching Don
You are so welcome! I am happy you are able to watch the recording so you don't miss it Delia
I’m listening and enjoying this wonderful lesson from upstate NY.
Thanks for listening! Glad you enjoyed it
Caught this a day late..Loved it !! Do more and hello from Northwest Montana.
Hello Montana! And more to come absolutely.
Super enjoyable and informative. I hope for more soon and could listen to you for hours. You guys did a great job technically… it couldn’t have been easy.
It took a lot of practice, and I couldn't have done it without Anne and Robert! Thank you for watching
Thank you there was so much useful information. Think the length of the video was perfect and I appreciate your time and knowledge
Perfect. Glad you enjoyed it Jill
Omg, thank you so much! This was so helpful! Hope you can do more. Thanks again!
Thank you for your time and help. It is amazing that you are so willing to help.
You are very welcome Vivian
Glad you enjoyed it Lydie. Thanks for watching
So helpful. Thank you! I'm new to oil painting, and I'm learning so much from your book and this channel.
Wonderful. Glad you are enjoying both the books and videos Jessie
Wasn’t able to watch this live, but really enjoyed it all the same. Hopefully I’ll be able to tune in for the next one…I enjoyed the dynamic of this give-and-take very much!
Thank you! Glad you were able to watch the recording
What a fantastic video. Thank you so much for all the information you give us and all the passion you put in it. Odile (from Provence)
Yes, I think we all had a couple of those at art school. Glad you enjoyed it.
Just watching the live. Please let me know date and time when you'll do this again. I have questions! Great live!
Great first live stream! Sorry I missed it. Love to hear what you have to say about abstract, representational and commissions. Please do this again.
HI Sharon, I had a whole section of paintings going from representational to abstract but maybe next time. Will do it again.
I had to work Saturday so came to this recording with great anticipation and as usual Ian, you didn’t disappoint. Your wonderful insight and ability to simplify the painting process is invaluable. Thank you for your time and enthusiasm! I look forward to the video on watercolor……😊
Thanks for listening and glad you enjoyed it!

You are so welcome! Thank you Vicky
Does anyone know the name of the Soviet painter who painted the cafe painting (at 1:00:30 of the video)? I love it and must see more of his/her paintings! Thank you very much.
Hi Peggy , it was by Ruslan A. Kobozev (1960) from a book called Socialist Realist Painting by Matthew Brown.
Thank you so much from Ireland. Most enjoyable and most informative. Looking forward to the next one. Breda
Thanks Breda and for your email. All the best.
This was lovely. Please do it again!
I plan on it! Thanks Ginger
