  • So many viewers (100,000 and counting) watched my last demonstration video from two weeks ago, I decided to do another. I elaborate on the video from last week on mixing greens and add not just the long form demonstration but show in advance how I am thinking about color mixing.
Here is a list of the pigments: titanium white, cadmium yellow lemon, cadmium yellow medium, yellow ochre, cadmium orange, cadmium red light, alizarin crimson, dioxazine purple, ultramarine blue, chrome oxide green, phthalo green.

Love your videos and the fact you display the ref photo and explain the colors being mixed to achieve end results, in addition to the technique used while painting. These videos are at the top of the ones most helpful. You stick to the point and don’t stray from the subject matter. Most helpful demonstrations! Thank you!

I agree with the longer demos at least once a month - they are quite helpful. I often think that the 6-7 minute videos are a little too short - they seem more of introductions to topics. (I didn't want to scroll all the way down to the end to type this comment.) OH! Now I see I could have made my comment at the beginning, but I don't know where it would end up in the listing of comments.

Hi Donald, thanks on your feedback on the length. It's true 6-8 minutes means crafting something pretty tightly on topic and letting all kinds of related ideas hung. I suppose until another later one. At the same time I hardly ever have time to watch something a good deal longer. What's that line about public speaking, close while they still want more. Not sure. All the best.

I was enthralled with your way of mixing greens! I need to watch this over several times, hope I can save this! I noticed the composition , vertical , horizontal and diagonal , is Always on the right side of the canvas. Do yo , or can you put the vertical on the left, etc.? I don't see why not!

According to Stefan Baumann, in western cultures, because we write from left to right, our eyes are comfortable going into the painting from the left and then rest on the right, other cultures such as Arabic who write from right to left have the opposite degree of comfort. It’s a natural progression from cultural training.

I noticed that because I’m left handed I have a tendency to put my focal point on the right hand side of my compositions. I have to be very careful because I also want to do the same with how the eye will enter a canvas.

Hi Michael, if the painting is smaller, 10 x 12 say, I just use lots of paint. And a smooth canvas. (Which I didn't use in the coming week's video and you'll see all the little holes left by the brush on the coarser canvas surface. But normally lots of paint and small canvas. On a big canvas I will sometime use mineral spirits to block in large shapes just to get the canvas covered.

Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into your lessons. They are truely an inspiration. The long demos are so helpful as you become aware of the way you analyse each colour choice and placement altering as you proceed to achieve rhythm and focus while still staying true to your original photo. Your mastery towards the end of what needs to be emphasised and what reduced to lead you into the scene are truely masterful. This is helping us all stay sane in difficult times.

Yes to the monthly demo. I'm always interested in other painters' process. Personally, I've found Phthalo green to quite an assertive color and I like Viridian green better. Seems fairly close to Phthalo, but easier for me to control. Lately I've gone to mixing my greens from scratch using Cadmium yellow pale, Yellow Ochre and Ultramarine blue. I'm also experimenting with replacing Alizarin Crimson with Transparent Red Iron Oxide.

    • @IanRobertsMasteringComposition
      @IanRobertsMasteringComposition  3 года назад

Phthalo just has more wheels so to speak. Get a big mass of color that has gone too neutral you can easily pull it back to green with phthalo where viridian you'd have to clean the brush and start again. But you are right, Phthalo can be a toxic color if you are not careful.

Thank you for this excellent blow-by-blow of how you create a harmonized palette of multi-temp. greens. I hope to apply this to my feeble attempts to bring life to the abundance of greens in our mountains which lull me into a state of bilious paralysis. Either that, or I render a leaf-by-leaf jigsaw. Using PG7 sparingly as an add-in only is genius. You call this long? I want more!

This is another fabulous demo! A friend sent me a link to one of your demos and I have been hooked, ever since. I am trying to catch up, not wanting to miss a single episode! You could say that I am "hooked": rod, line & sinker! LOL
I have been trying for years to paint faster,...more effectively. Though I love oil painting, the process just seemed so long and tedious but your method seems so much more direct & beautiful. By the way, I love your bright colours!
I learned oil painting from an old master who was 93 yrs old when she started teaching me, but she was "frustrated by her slow output" (an amazing- one 18" x 24" per week) and stiff style.
I really like the way you explain, clearly & simply, throughout the videos even while painting! and you post your reference images in the frame, as well as showing us your palette! To me, it is as though you are showing us a glimpse into your painting soul! Thank you for sharing! You share so well (in quality and content)!

One thing I’m confused about is how to keep the residual paint on the brush from ruining the little blobs of color. Maybe it’s editing but you don’t appear to rinse your brush. Every time you grab a little yellow ochre for example you’re also leaving a smear of dark green. (Haha this is probably a “cleanliness” hang-up I have and the antidote is probably to “get messy!” ) Maybe I should try finger painting. 😬

Thanks for this video too - subtlety is such a difficult thing to get right, and something I'd like to really be able to get a good handle on. Currently struggling with a hill in the middle distance of my current painting. Finding it really tough to find the balance of the right amount of detail/variation, and the right hue - like how blued out should it be when its local colour is warm, its receiving direct sunlight, but is as I say middle distance? One moment it's too grey, the next too saturated, the next too much detail - ack! The subtlety in this ONE HILL is really pushing me.

I’m just starting to paint, and I’ve read about the problem of creating mud. In this video and others, you often mix any number of pigments together without any apparent concern about creating mud. How do you avoid it? Thanks.

Thank you very much. I followed along and made a copy. Learned a lot about mixing greens. My end result when compared with yours demonstrates how much experience and talent you have!

This video is very helpful. I always have my colors too saturated, mostly because I am scared of using white. It seems like every time I introduce white, my painting goes down hill, and that is probably because I am too saturated at the beginning. Huge, huge help to me to see you mix in the white! Thank you!

A long demo is a GREAT idea. Truly enjoyed this demonstration! I really need to develop my palette of colors, I use way too many. Thank you!

Gosh it really helped to see the palette and the colors being subtly adjusted as you painted. Great I hope you do more like this.

I am assuming this technique works in Acrylics as well? Can you advise what brush you use, it looked like a very soft filbert? I loved this tutorial demonstration!
Thanks from someone who has about a year under his belt.

Hi, it’s my second comment today, I’m a new member. Curious about your use of mediums. I love the way your paints flow, what medium did you use here? Thanks

This demo was most helpful. Although I am a novice using acrylics I have learned a lot in this 25 minute video. More Please!

That was very interesting and instructive, enjoyed learning how to soften the edges and blend tonal values.
Long demo's are good but I reckon once in a while for issues that warent that much attention so one a month would be plenty hey.
The shorter demos hold your attention but more suited to specific targeted issues? Food for thougt.
Great work, realy enjoying this learning Ian, well done 😉 Bert in Oz
