- Based on your comments on my last video, this month I demonstrate my Master Copy of the Ukrainian painter Fyodor Zakharov. At the end of this video, I give three tips on how to do a Master Copy yourself.
Why do a Master Copy? Well, it is a time-honored practice that goes back hundreds of years. I mean, Rubens copied Velasquez when he was in Spain - so that tells you something. It's not about becoming or trying to become someone else. It's about exploring a new direction... Perhaps something that pulls you or appeals to you. Looking at someone who's been there ahead of you, and could help guide you by looking at the way they've done it. So in this way, we can do a master copy and we could decide if we want to explore one direction more, acknowledge we need to understand something more, or realize that we want to leave it altogether. It is about embedding yourself in the practice.

I used to think of master copying as a tedious affair. After watching you, I was envious of how much fun you seemed to be having, especially on the vines and shadows. Thank you for sharing this.
Hi Dennis, I think the trick is finding an image that excites you. That you can learn from. Otherwise it could just seem like a tedious exercise. All the best
thank you, sir! I know you’ve heard it hundred, thousands of times even, but you are very inspiring. I love the way you can articulate your passion about what you’re doing. I enjoyed watching you and listening to you as you explored this painting and what you took away from it. I Look forward to your next video.
Thanks so much Kate. Appreciate your letting me know you find the videos helpful.
Just found your channel, I think I have a lot to learn from your teachings. Thank you for being so open & honest in what you have shared. You're so awesome🇦🇺
@@heatherlaird-mcleod3271 Thank you for the kind comment. I am delighted you like my channel. Thank you and all the best.
I'm a big fan of painting reproductions as you learn so much from the process. Believe it or not, I painted a reproduction of The Mona Lisa, same size as the original, in watercolor. I know you suggested using the same medium but being that I am a watercolor artist, that is what I know and love. I learned so much about that painting. I've got it hanging in my house and it gives me great pleasure to look at her and her beautiful hands. Thanks for all your inspiration!
That sounds like a great exercise. Lots of very soft transitions and edges in that painting. All the best
Oooo I paint watercolor too! I'd like to see it :D Are you on IG?
@@charnellmorgan No, I'm sorry, Instagram is one form of social media I have never gotten into. Keep up the watercolor painting!
I painted the Mona Lisa in pastel! Also, the same size, and I also have it hanging in my house. Even though it took me a year of painting it (on and off), I learned so much. Especially how SMALL the face is! It was certainly educational, but a challenge :)
Congratulations on your work, it really must look very beautiful. I'm also thinking in painting it in oils. Hope to do it soon. Wish you also the best with your next works. Cheers from Oz
I so appreciate your videos! Thank you for taking the time to pass along your valuable insights and recommendations!
Thank you for watching. Delighted you enjoyed it
I have often stood in awe in front of original paintings that have inspired me to pick up a brush and have a go. To have had the good fortune to see closely how Streeton worked or the impressionists at Musee D'Orsay is a constant motivation to keep painting.
Sometimes I have to admit standing in front of a painting and being in awe of the apparent process. You can see a lot from a reproduction but some painters you can't really see them except in front of the original. All the best.
I really enjoyed that Ian, but ooof! I would not have had the guts to paint over it at the end like that! Thank you so much. 😃
Glad you liked the video Julie. I really didn't know what I'd ever do with that copy so....
Thank you Ian, I love your shows and I also love Fedor Zaxarov's paintings. I especially love his bold almost careless style. I tried to imitate with minimal success. He was born in Smolensk region of Russian parents. Died in Yalta that time Ukraine, today Russia. Few years back I would not have cared weather he is Ukrainian or Russian but due to constant pro-Ukrainian hype I needed to mention it. I think he is little bit of both as with many other artists and writers they have to share as they should.
Great video. I have to say, including bits like how you had to redo part of the cartoon or how you are painting shapes without knowing what they represent, trusting that they'll become clear as long as you are committed to accuracy of portrayal, is very helpful. Not only is it validating for amateurs like myself, but it's just fun seeing the shared joy of process. A lot of my own paintings come from extremely cropped photos I take at random while I go about my job, and I enjoy that process of discovery, too ("I have no idea what this blob is behind his shoulder...hey it's a shark figurine!?"). Thanks again for doing all that you do.
Thank you for the comment. Talking through and simplifying the painting process is why I make these videos, so it makes me happy to hear you're enjoying them. All the best.
Thank you, Ian! You are such an inspiration. I learn a lot from your demonstrations.
That makes me happy to hear. Thank you Selma
Wow to watch you paint is such a gift for all. Thank you so much for sharing your masterful knowledge and joy of painting, Ian. Very inspiring always! Happy summertime to you and Anne!
You're very welcome! I hope you have a wonderful summer as well. All the best.
Excellent, I enjoyed it and learned a lot. I am used to seeing you paint now, but this was a different style, so it was cool to see how you tackled it. RIP FZ Mastercopy!
Yes he a couple of weeks in the sun and now definitely buried. All the best.
Thank you Ian for showing us your master copy process and the importance of knowing want you want gain from doing the copy. Always a joy watching you paint!
Glad to hear that. Thanks so much Candace
So wise, enlightening and eye opening! You are a master yourself!!! Thank you, Ian Roberts!
Hi Ian, I so agree with you about the value of copying the masters. I once copied one of Picasso's Marie-Therese portraits and learned that it was only possible to come anywhere close to the original if one was standing up and using a long-handled brush! 😊
Exactly. You learn while doing. Thank you Elaine. Delighted you enjoyed the video
Thank you for this. I loved that it was short and sweet and really to the point of doing a master copy. Happy painting!
Happy painting, indeed. Thank you for watching and glad you enjoyed it
Fantastic video. Just the nudge I needed. Learning is key to art. Ever if you're just learning how not to do it.
Thank you. I am glad this was the nudge you needed
Thank you for sharing your thought process. I really appreciate hearing what you were looking for at each step along the way. I also really appreciate hearing about the parts you were unsure about our where you made your best guess.
Glad you enjoy hearing my painting process. That is the goal out of these videos. All the best
You are a good teacher.
Thank you. Glad you think so
Thanks, that was a great demo! We did this as a university class a few months ago, we copied a still like of Cezanne. It was a great exercise. Working in acrylic rather than oil made it a bit harder to mimic the brush strokes but I learned a LOT!
Cezanne would be a good one. Lots of nuanced brushwork.
Thanks Ian , this was very interesting and challenging for future thought , I loved the painting , can't imagine doing a painting that size plein air. thanks Craig
Thank you Craig. I hope you enjoy the process if you decide to do it
Thanks, Ian! This was an inspirational video for me as I've lost my confidence in painting and am trying to get it back. It helps to hear the areas where you struggled and what didn't turn out the way you wanted.
Hi Kim, I do hope you get back to it if that is your desire. It is a long term project, like learning to play piano. You hit plateaus, nothing seems to be changing for the better. But often you are in fact embedding what you know deeper and deeper so you own it thoroughly and then a new step forward appears. Good luck.
Thank you so much for this Ian, so helpful, very much appreciated, especially your comments about brushes and brush work, and your 3 tips, Julia x
Glad it was helpful Julia. All the very best.
Great video Ian! Thanks you for the demonstration of the process which was so helpful.
You're very welcome. Thank you for watching
I so appreciate this! You're very generous with your knowledge and we're so lucky that you're also a great instructor!
Thanks so much Laura.
This video was wonderful Ian. I especially liked the color mixing and your views of choosing what interests you most and focusing on that instead of merely making a copy. I will watch this again and look forward to the next video. Many thanks.
Thanks so much Mary. Makes me happy to hear
Thank you for this video. It is very helpful to hear your thoughts and observe your process. You have given me the push needed to try a Tom Thomson painting that I have admired for years.
Hi Doug, Tom Thomson would be a good one. Have fun with it. All the best
Thank you very much for doing this second post. While I really enjoyed the entire video, your takeaway list at the end is invaluable. Those tips are so helpful.
Thank you. Delighted you liked the tips especially
Thank you Ian! This is really an inspiration to go out there and challenge oneself.
My pleasure. Glad you enjoyed it
I especially like your attitude. "It's just a study." Then paint right over it before you get too attached. Well done sir.
Thank you Mark. It helps with the painting process
Hi Ian thank you so much for sharing your process of a master copy, beautiful job!
You're very welcome Alicia. Thank you for watching
I enjoy your longer videos - they show the progress how the painting comes together - 10 minutes doesn’t allow us to understand the whole process 👍
Thanks for letting me know. Hope you liked this one also. All the best.
Thank you Ian, another very interesting Video. For you and your Family also a fantastic Sommer.
Thank you very much Gary. The same to you and your family
Excellent advice, as always. Thank you for all the help you offer to painters.
You're very welcome. Thank you for watching
Thank you Ian. Another one to inspire us. Even though you wouldn't want to sell a master copy or maybe not hang it in your house - I have one - you may want to keep it and hang it in the studio as a reminder and reference of the things learned. 😇
Glad you enjoyed the video. Mine is covered up now. It was too big to have lying around I think. Put the canvas, I hope, to good use on a new image.
Great stuff here Ian. Nice that someone as accomplished as yourself can benefit from doing copies of masters. I guess copying any work that you admire and want to learn about is beneficial…ie: doesn’t have to be a master….as long as you paint over it. I’ll give it a shot!
I hope you enjoy the painting process. Thank you Ted. Glad you liked the video
I so enjoyed this video as I've been copying your paintings, Ian! I've learnt so much about shapes and colour matching from doing it. But when finished, did I 'let them go'? No way! Have them all over my walls at home!
Well I hope they all good up on your walls. Honored. All the best.
Thank you for this wonderful demonstration; as always, it's an inspiration. I also enjoyed seeing how you mix so many colors to end up with a vibrant hue. I learn so much from your videos.
Thanks so much. I am glad you liked this video.
I started a master copy - I painted over it 3 times to understand what the artist did - I am now understanding his colors and composition - I am still painted some areas over but the more I go back into the painting I understand what the artist accomplished - it is an amazing painting - one to be treasured👍
Good for you for going into it with such patience and insight. Best wishes.
Love your content, it’s unfortunate that YT only now recommended your videos to me. Subscribed!!
I am glad you found your way here. Thank you for watching and subscribing
This is wonderful (as usual with your videos), thank you so much! You're very generous with your knowledge!
You are so welcome!
Thank you, Ian. All your videos are full of inspiration and learn so much from your demonstrations. Merci. ❤
Thanks so much Marie. Glad you liked it
Thank you, Ian! I seriously have to say, I like yours better! I really love your style! I enjoyed another one of your wonderful videos! 😊
Thank you. That is kind of you to say Megan
This is fairly useful to improve the brushwork related to the creation of shapes, thanks Ian!
You're very welcome! Glad you found that part useful.
Once again an absolutely wonderful video. As is always the case, your observations take the lesson far beyond just what can be gleaned from watching the process of you painting. In this particular case, I can attest through my own personal experience the observations that you make when considering undertaking a Master Copy. I have always admired Diego Rivera and was fortunate enough a couple of years ago to see two of his paintings --"El Abanil" (The Bricklayer) and "The Seventh of November, Moscow, 1928" -- at my local art museum. Both appeared to have be undertaken using a limited (Zorn) palette. So I had the happy confluence of an artist I admired, the ability to undertake personal/close observation of his work and an image and/or "technique" worthy of exploring. This combination of elements, as you suggest in your video, makes undertaking a copy of another artist's work more than a spiritless and/or academic "exercise." I learned a great deal, with great joy in the process. Oh, and I did not paint over the copies that I made!
HI Raymond, that sounds like the ideal situation for a copy. Delighted you enjoyed the video. All the best.
Great demo and timely too!!! I was just asked about the whole concept of copying the masters in plein air workshop I was conducting. This video really reinforced my feelings and understanding about the concept, especially about what you take away and what you choose to leave behind....Thanks Ian!!
Delighted you enjoyed it Mark. And for the timing. All the best.
I'd been looking forward to this one, and it did not disappoint! Thank you for making this video. Lovely to watch and helpful tips :)
Thank you so much. Delighted you enjoyed it
Thank you. I'll be coming back to this several times I'm sure. So much packed in in 11 minutes! ❤
Thank you Kate. Delighted you enjoyed the short video
I have painted other artists' paintings to learn (a Master Copy) brushstrokes and color. It is a great learning experience. Your 3 takeaways at the end were very helpful for a focus of what one might be after. Thank you for your insights and ideas.
You're welcome Andrea. I hope you have fun with your own Master Copy. All the best
Ditto to the remarks and your suggestions to venture into some masterwork that appeals and just do it. Hey, have some fun. Thanks.
Thanks so much. Glad you liked it
Thanks so much Ian! I learn so much from each video, and am always excited to apply these lessons to my painting. I love your loose brushwork, and painting shapes not things. Such a help! Enjoy your July!
Thanks so much Susan. Hope you enjoy your July as well
“(Make a master copy for yourself)….And then let it go”. (paint over it)
Such brilliant advice. We tend to hold every exercise so precious and in turn we are stressed from the start that it has to be amazing and something of value, especially to others. When instead what we should set out doing, is to see what we can learn and discover….and perhaps even just to have some bloody fun.
I appreciate everything about your lessons, even the wee bits you may not feel is important. Thank you so much 😊
That is a good takeaway. Doing things for discovery, experimenting, practice. Not precious masterpieces all the time. Even if we could!
Thanks Ian, I’m oil painting again after years of acrylic painting and feeling very confident in my work. Thanks to your videos.
I have to say I love the feel of oil paint. Glad you are enjoying the videos. All the best.
Oooh. I painted some master copies too and couldn't figure out what to do with them and they just sit there collecting dust. Just paint over them! Wow, that never occured to me. And painting over old paintings is one of my favourite things to do! Thank you, Ian!
I was thinking, just move on with something new. And you get that lovely interplay of the old and the new into all kinds of potential accidents
I was really looking forward to seeing you do this. Enjoyed watching you tackle it was so interesting.
Thank you Derek. Glad you found it was worth the wait
I love your comment about not copying anybody’s calligraphy, and your video really helps me
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
Thanks, Ian. This was really fun to watch and so informative. Can’t wait to try-And your painting that followed looked great!
Thanks so much Audrey. Glad you think so
Thank you for trying to open our horizons for us. Have a nice summer to you too.
Thank you. Delighted you liked it. All the best.
Thank you for sharing the process and the tips!
You're very welcome. Glad you liked it
Thank you Ian for your video. In the past, I have reproduced some paintings by Great 😮😮Masters. Renoir: 1) Dance in the city, 2) Dance in the countryside and the 3rd, Dance in Bougival is in preparation. All 24x48. Then, Monet: 1) The woman in the umbrella, turned to the right, 2) Parliament, sunset. Picasso: The dream. The experience, which these Masters made me live, is unique. The passion that animated me was intense and the composition, the representation, the choice of colors were revealed as I progressed in the painting. I imbued myself with their sensibility, their love for their models, their passion for what surrounds them and makes them vibrate and their rigor throughout my work. Thank you for giving this advice to your followers. Have a great painting summer! 🧑🏻🎨
Hi Louise, it does pull you into their world doesn't it. You sound like you have enjoyed that process. All the best.
I learn a lot from your demonstration. Thank you very much for your time and your priceless devotion to your art. Have a nice summer
Thanks so much Joanne. Have a wonderful summer too
Thank you Ian. I really enjoyed this and I’m inspired to try one. Actually did one a few years ago of a Mary Cassatt and it helped me understand how she painted the light and shadows in that particular portrait.
Have fun doing another one, Karen. I suspect as you grow as an artist each time you copy someone you are seeing and learning at a different level.
I think it would be useful to help judge values, too. Seeing colors next to each other and well balanced would help judge your own color mixing. Maybe we have a problem mixing too light or too dark and working to generally match what another painter did would smooth off the rough edges in our own work.
That is a good insight and I think very true.
Love watching you bring us through your process! As I always ay, you are an inspiration! It is fun exploring new techniques! Many years ago I did a mastercopy of a JJTissot piece called Seaside. It was fun and even though it is not a perfect ‘copy’ it was very interesting as a learning piece! Thanks for your super video. Wishing you a great vacation and will be looking forward to your new video in August!
Hi Jean, not a perfect copy but as you say great learning experience. All the best
Thank you.
Great!
You're very welcome Kathleen
Thank you!
You're welcome!
Right now I'm trying to paint using your style, which I found very beautiful. thanks. Im using shapes
Thank you Ian for sharing this video. It's inspiring to see an established artist such as yourself experimenting with studies of other artists. Your video, as always was helpful, instructional and super inspiring. Thank you. Oh, and after waiting since March for a copy of your book 'Mastering composition, it's finally arrived!! 👏👏
Delighted the book has arrived, finally. Hope you enjoy it. All the best

Thank you, Ian! Planning a video and getting that camera to record then edit, edit, & edit is a LOT of work, blood, sweat and tears, sometimes, no doubt. I appreciate every video and treasure the lessons you share with us! Thank you for doing all this for us! Your constancy and dedication to us keeps me going!
Thanks so much Carol. I really appreciate your telling me you enjoy the videos.
Thank you again. Your message of painting by shapes really came thru in this video.

That was awesome 👏 thank you 🙏 😊
You're very welcome. Thank you for watching
Very good explanation of why copying is so great to do. I've had the pleasure and privilege of being a registered Copyist at the National Gallery in Washington, DC for over 20 years. I don't make academic copies, but rather treat them as I do any paintings from life that I do. I do my best to get the feel of the artist's intention and adopt the manner of their brushwork. As you recommend, I've always chosen paintings to copy that will help and inform my own work, which is representational and observational. I love to work from the figure and also from the landscape, and I work directly, so I usually choose the Impressionists to copy. My current copy is of Mary Cassatt's "Woman with a Red Zinnia", which combines the figure and the landscape.
That's really interesting. I've never copied in a museum. I've never lived in a city that has that program. But I'm with you I wouldn't do a strict academic copy. All the best
Thank you Ian. A wonderful video.
Glad you enjoyed it Wendy. Thank you
Excellent demo! I think most of my students subscribe to your series, so I hope they will be inspired to do master copies of their own!
Thanks Steve, glad you liked it. Good exercise for students I think. All the best.
Thanks for doing this video! It was very interesting to see your process in the copy. I love that you painted over it in the end... one of the biggest hurdles for many artists is being too precious about work. Great video.
Glad you enjoyed it!
I have learned many things from your videos, thank you so much!
You're very welcome. Thanks so much
Thanks for your videos Ian X
You're welcome John. All the best
