    "Stuttery feel". That's multi-GPU gaming (since around 2010) in a nutshell. I think once the games required enough bandwidth, it was just too much for the motherboard and cards to handle smoothly. And in this case.... To be honest, the fact that such an asymmetric multi-GPU set-up works at all is amazing. Too bad you didn't have an HD 6570 to crossfire with the APU. I think that was the best GPU that worked with the HD 8570D.

    When I first got into PC gaming I had no clue about the hardware aspect of things, I wanted to play Arma 2 and by god I was going to make that happen.
    Saved my summer work money and purchased a acer desktop with AMD A6-3620…. Little did I know….
    Anyway after playing all games on their lowest respective settings I starting to learn more about hardware and PC components.
    I was in limbo for so long whether or not too pair my A6 with a 6670 and so X-fire, or just go 7750 and do away with x fire. I ended up doing neither and built a 8320, 2gb 770 machine instead a couple years later…. Another mistake.

    This video honestly helped me a ton. I never knew what the dual graphics actually were but I remembered I have an older prebuilt package computer that supposedly had it.
    I started looking into it and found out that the PC actually had the wrong GPU and wasn't even DG compatible with the CPU, and removing the GPU entirely gave me much better performance already. Then I found a used HD 6570 for cheap and slapped it in there and now I can run certain games at a very comfortable 50-60 fps on lower graphics.
    It's only a backup computer but I'm super happy with the results, I probably never would have known about this if I hadn't stumbled upon this video.

    I actually did similar to this back in 2013 with the AMD A10-6800K Richland 4.1 GHz (4.4GHz Turbo) Socket FM2 100W Quad-Core Desktop Processor - Black Edition AMD Radeon HD 8670D and a SAPPHIRE Radeon HD 7730 DirectX 11 100359-2GL 2GB 128-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 3.0 CrossFireX Support Video Card(UEFI). I also tried it with XFX Radeon R6670 DirectX 11 2GB 128-Bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.1 CrossFireX Supported Video Card. The HD 7730 was made about 6-8 months after specifically for CrossFire with the A10-6800K APU. The R6670 or R6650 were the video cards recommended at the time of release of the A10-6800X for Dual Graphics/CrossFire. Both setups worked great and there was very little to no difference between the HD 7730 or the R6670. I still have the computer that I built. I haven't used it for about 5 years now.

    So I used to actually use this feature regularly, as my primary system was an Acer Aspire V3 laptop that used an A8-4500M and a Radeon HD 7670M, and to use the dedicated gpu I had to use the crossfire I believe, either way, that's what I had it set to and played that way for years. It was the first computer I owned that was able to play games and I used it from 2012 to 2017, and I was really happy with what I managed to get out of it. It was really interesting to me to see this feature revisited in 2020, it makes me want to dig out that old laptop and see what it can do today

    I did this in two HTPC computers which both had an a8 6700 and a 6750 i built about a decade ago. I would never recommend this setup today but I remember at the time being impressed with it and it made sense in a HTPC setup because it was off when not playing a game so the system was quiet and kicked in when playing a game giving you decent frame rates. It gave the ability to build a low profile system with reasonable graphics.

    I remember being quite intrigued by the whole crossfire with the apu. Now it seemed like you could go cheap, get more performance later on that way when you can afford it. However I realized that the low cost entry still limited you and amd had better offerings in it's fx line, even if you didn't get an apu. Even then getting a real GPU was a better upgrade than these budget ones with sli and if you went for an a8 or a10, then you were pushing the boundaries of why not just go fx or intel. I still had a friend who got an apu and just ended up getting a good graphics card as it was a budget option that worked well enough for him.
    However as for the video, titles need to support sli/crossfire to see reasonable improvements and bethesda or obsidian in this case new vegas didn't support sli/crossfire. I don't think any of the newer titles ever did either. I remember during fallout 4's heyday, some people with sli setup's, specifically someone who bought 980 ti triple sli and the latest intel cpu complaining that god ray's ultra suffered in performance in fallout 4.Some people upgrade to max out a game and god rays were just too unreasonable and the game not supporting sli didn't help. However many other people with sli and crossfire had the same complaints.

    Good video because it tests a dual-graphics setup one would not expect for that card. One would expect a hd6450 to pair with a dualcore a6-6400k richland APU (dual-core) especially because the a6-6400k is very overclockable. While it won't be up to your dual-core, it would be "in keeping" with the era of games such cards could use. If you have two (1GB or 2GB) hd6450 cards or r5-230 cards, crossfire those and see reasonable performance (especially overclocked). On different combinations (officially supported), I'm pretty sure you can choose to plug into the APU onboard or the graphics-card monitor port (to test different speed performance).
    As an aside, your mboard there could totally have the back cut (a small saw or dremel) out of the pci-e x1 slot which is gen2. You could have 3 cards plugged in for crossfire _(but I doubt the APU could join in with that fun, but hey it might do it)._ A hd6450 won't saturate that and nor will a r5-230. In fact, even a r7-240 would use about "3x" slot (theoretically 2.5x slot at gen2) so you only need a 4x slot for those. A hd6850 or hd7750 only loses about 15% performance in a gen2 x4 pci-e slot and therefore is acceptable at 85% but of course at that point it is saturated in the slot so you'd go for an 8x slot gen2 as you would with say a nvidia750 or 1030 so you'd be using say 6x slot bandwidth.

    I did this as well, using an A10-5800K paired with an HIS-branded HD 6570 1gb card. Although officially not supported, Dual Graphics did work. Sadly, I took no measurements, and eventually relied on the 6570 alone as the 5800K had decided that this wasn't just a model number, but a thermal goal in degrees Kelvin. Fortunately, the system limped along (underclocked and undervolted) until I could leave FM2+ for AM4.

    I would have liked to see a more powerful card to pair with the iGPU. This would answer the question, if there was actually any reason for this setup.
    My last PC, based on the AM3 Plattform, with a Phenom II 1055t and A 890GX Northbridge also had this feature (which I never made use of) in an even more weird way: While the CPU did not have integrated graphics, there was a Radeon HD 4290 integrated in the Northbridge. You could use "Hybrid Graphics" or "Crossfire" between the GPU in the Northbridge and a cheap videocard.

    Nice overview :) though I certainly wouldn't do that with any of my (present or future) systems, especially if, in some games, adding the display adapter type GPU made things worse. Personally, I'd just either stick with the iGPU, assuming it was OK enough, or just got a better dedicated GPU to go with the CPU (assuming the CPU was capable enough to be paired with a semi-decent GPU).
    The HD6450 (and other types of low power, passively cooled GPUs are only worth using as display adapter.

    Add some capacitors to the back of the card and overclock it to hell and back

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 4 года назад

      Lol, I don’t think that’s quite going to cut it, haha! Your best option is to use liquid nitrogen (or at least dry ice since that’s available in some grocery stores and you don’t need to buy a tank for it), then do a voltage bypass control mod on the card (the tricky part is since that’s such a low end card you probably won’t find a guide of where to solder from any EXOC people, so you’ll have to look up the pinouts and datasheet yourself and do some probing). Those are going to get you way farther than the ~20 MHz (probably max) that a cap mod would do, you’d be looking at potentially huge gains (I know I ran my first GPU, an RX270, at a 50% overclock just on phase cooling with no other modifications as my daily machine until I found out the hard way what sub-zero on your GPU for your daily system does to the BGA solder in terms of thermal cyclic fatigue, haha!)

    • @jakegarrett8109

      @@matt4193 meh, it’s for fun. Lots of EXOC guys drive the price up of older cards buying just to have fun (last time I checked they drove up old GT460 cards above the price of RX470 because that was the benching competition card that season). It’s all for fun, people buy $20 cards then burn $50 in liquid nitrogen just having a good time. Haha, not to mention that you still need a cooler to hold the dry ice in**
      **my cooler that can do dry ice cost me just over $400 USD, and currently I’ve got that zip tied on top of my old R9 270 right now for when I feel like getting around to chopping it in half with a hack saw and soldering on an EVGA Epower V board (which is like a $250 VRM zombie power board) to what’s probably a $20 GPU, haha! Sometimes you just gotta have fun, be whacky, and enjoy being silly 😜

      @terry broderick if you’re not just wanting to overclock for fun (even my tablet is water cooled, lol, it’s just a fun sport). My friends used to joke “if you had a watch you’d probably overclock it”, and I took a moment then replied “you’re probably right, and I bet I could overclock a smart watch since those run android”, lol, that’s me, someone who loves tinkering!

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 4 года назад

      @terry broderick I’m actually amazed at how little I’ve broken abusing things, I’ve only slightly damaged one GPU overclocking years ago but it’s actually working fine now. By comparison in the same time I’ve had the following computer parts break using while within spec and not doing anything crazy: 2 GPUs, 1 TV sound board, 1 monitor, 3 power supplies, 2 SSD drives, and a few fans. So seems it’s ok even when everything goes wrong, because I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had coolant leak water all over my computers (and all those parts are still running just fine) or how many times I’ve had to wipe puddles of water off my parts, or swap RAM sticks that were frozen over had to wipe off the pools of water off the motherboard while in the middle of benching, and none of those times has anything broke. Like Ive had to have had at least a dozen water leaks, at least! Haha, computer parts are actually pretty tough, and most of my stuff has custom BIOS to allow unlimited power and remove all safeties, but it’s always seemed to be fine (I’ve set the record for a few 3D mark records for particular hardware, so I’m not babying the parts too much, it’s much more than any normal consumer would do).
      I also love crossfire like you. My main PC is Halloween themed built in a vampire style casket and uses is 4x R9 Fury in crossfire (it’s crazy performance, over double the fps of my Titan Xp, currently nothing else beats it and it’s only about $500 in GPUs while beating 2x RTX 2080ti and since RTX 3090 doesn’t seem to have SLI support it’s probably still one of the fastest while at the same time not crazy multi-thousand dollar in graphics). It’s paired with my Threadripper 1950x and that runs great at 4.2 GHz all 32 threads with 3600 MHz quad channel memory it’s a beast (that’s just on water, I’m hoping to make an extreme cascade cooler to run it at -100c someday as my daily machine). Powering that since it’s Halloween themed are 2x SuperNova 1300 PSUs (gotta go duel 13’s on Halloween builds, haha, that and while running Crysis it pulls about 1700w from the wall, haha!) I love my crazy crossfire setups and last I was benching for fun I set the record for crossfire RX470 on 3dMark, then gave one of those to my little cousin as a nice upgrade for Christmas.

    The reason behind the low FPS in your dual-mode configuration possibly because in your case the powerful GPU (which is the integrated APU) underperforms due to the presence of the weakly HD 6450. Always we should try to pair equally performing cards in SLI or Crossfire.
