This was so chock-full of really valuable advice. If me and my Fiancée ever visit Colombia we'll have to take notes on this video and keep them in our back pocket!
I lived here in Medellin for over a year before discovering D1 stores because, like Sam says, their display doesn't look polished and high end. So what!? On so many products you use every day you can save big money and over the course of a year it really adds up. Some examples are laundry detergent, shampoo. toothpaste, mouth wash, razor blades, snacks, milk, chips, etc. Justo Y Bueno is very similar but D1 seems better organized to me. They really stay on top of keeping the stores well stocked, well lit and clean.
Why don’t you give the names of your cheap restaurants? Specially the one in Laureles… also there are very nice hostels in Colombia….the best I have ever stayed in! Masaya, Los Patios, Viajero, to name a few in Medellin!
Hi Sam. I recently saw crime stats for the area broken down by neighborhood. The highest rates of robbery from people was. 1 El Centro by far 2 El Poblado 3 Laureles I was surprised but the piece said that the richer areas are prime targets now. Envigado was pretty good. The safest in Metro Medellin was Sabaneta. I think I saw it on Medellin Guru. I’m headed to Sabaneta in July. Just a point of interest. Have a good one. Thanks for the video. Edit: spelling
One thing u can do is try to get ur activities done during the day and limit the time you spend out at night to just the area ur hotel is in.. should be fine.
But SAM,, Mercado del Rio is close to my Hotel! I only found it by accident.
Coming in November!
Rain and gripa season ! I am coming Jan 20 th
Love the info. Hope to come down this winter.
Well done again Sam for a very helpful video. You always put a lot of effort and forethought into your presentations, and it's really appreciated!
Glad it was helpful!
When u mention laureles as somewhere to stay are you also suggesting the area around the stadium?
Yes, many tourists stay around this area too. However, at night or on a day of a soccer game, one has to be more careful.

One of these was around the main park in Sabaneta. The other one in Laureles closed last year, unfortunately.
Didn’t know they had menu de dia at night 😜

Sam
Wow, German sounds like ancient English
Looks cheap to me cheaper than Canada any ways
Way, way cheaper if you have loonies, US bucks or other hard currency. It's not cheap for those who must live on the local currency.
How can I get in touch for a consultation? I will be moving to colombia
