    Congrats on the 30 day challenge. The fact that you realise you haven’t really missed out on anything shows you didn’t really need it in the first place. There is some great stuff on screaming at the moment and the trouble is finding the time to start eating into those watchlists, add into that movie buying and there just isn’t enough hours in the day to get through anything. The bargains to be had on iTunes are fantastic. Today for instance I bought the first 10 Star Trek films for £12.99, all in 4K. My physical purchases has shrunk down massively, last month I picked up only 2 releases. I’m getting really picky on what I actually think I want.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 месяцев назад

      That Star Trek offer was terrific. No way you could get the physical discs for that collection anywhere near that price for many years.
      Doing the challenge really was a bit of a wake up call. Happy I did it and hoping it can help me consider pick ups a little more going forward.
      You’re right about the time though. There’s still movies on streaming that I want to see but haven’t yet got around too. I’ve still not watched Snyders Rebel Moon 😱

    Loving your channel. I do it all. Those iTunes sales are so good I buy it and wait for Black Friday and might by the physical copy but not always.

      The iTunes sales really are pretty great. 4k movies with extras anywhere from £3 / $5. Can’t grumble at that.
      Knowing the digital option is always there is enough to hold me off some purchases now. Instead of clicking the buy button I often click ‘add to list’ instead. I’ll let the title sit in there over time… often when the hype has passed, it’ll get removed from the list as my interest wanes. Avoided a lot of unnecessary purchases that way recently.
      I even managed to catch some on streaming that I would have bought straight away if not for this challenge. Glad I didn’t spend the £20+ on Dial of Destiny or The Marvels.

      Haha. Damn those sales !
      How mad did you go on the sale ?
      Amazon wishlist is helping a little. Instead of clicking buy it now, I click add to wishlist. See how I feel about it a few days later. Finding that a lot of the time it’s the hype and excitement over the actual movie that kept me buying.

      A couple of titles that would have been pick ups straight away in the past I caught on streaming on the services I already had. Now, actually quite relieved I didn’t pay the premium to have that physical copy sat on the shelf and end up £30 lighter.

    It sounds like this has been great of benefit for you.
    For me personally I had to completely stop buying physical media, because I just couldn’t resist buying absolutely everything, as much as I said to myself only favourites, it never was.
    I do miss the tangible side to physical media, but honestly getting an Apple TV 4K and purchasing iTunes movies for £3-4 a pop is just so much more effective for me. Plus the quality differences are almost indistinguishable.
    I just got the Star Trek 10 Movie collection all in 4K Dolby Vision for £12.99, it’d cost £135 for the same movies on disc, that’s just over 10x the price.
    I hope you manage to find peace in what ever direction you go in, and remember both physical and digital can co-exist with each other, for me it wasn’t an option I’m too much of an all or nothing type person.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 месяцев назад +1

      I find the Apple TV box to be a great option. So many bargains on there at times. That Star Trek offer was a steal.
      I’m finding a balance between the physical and digital collection. I use both. Amazing trying to sell the benefits to others when they’re only in that physical media mindset.
      I’m still keeping a collection but seriously considering a 1 in 2 out rule until I can get that collection down to a more manageable size.

    I tend to buy second hand and you would be really surprised how many have digital codes no one used and are still good. I am adding films to my vudu all the time for .50. So I get my disc and a digital service I don't have to pay monthly for. I use the $ I used to spend on streaming to just pick up titles I love for as cheap as I can. I put my cds on my pc so I can make stuff to take in the car and keep my discs safe on my shelf but I still also have great places to hunt cds cheap. I am cut cable and streaming is going to be just like it soon, edited for audiences, nothing good to watch, and $$$$. With any hobby we all fall into the over buying , buying deluxe, or just going a little mad sometimes :) . Balance is everything and not getting ripped off is nice.

    Sometimes less is more, sometimes more is, well -- ahem, more. Nothing is wrong with trying to curate your collection to your own preferences and liking. I have been trying to focus more on collecting films from boutique labels more-so than anything else - mostly films with exclusive restorations, exclusive bonus features, and other exclusives (booklets, collectible packaging, additional content - art cards, posters, etc.) rather than as many standard Blu-ray releases.
    Nothing is wrong with a collecting break if you need one but remember why you love physical media: it is yours to keep forever, as long as you want to own it. No one can just "delete" it from a cloud.

    • @PhillwithadoubleL

      The boutique labels do seem to be the way to focus a collection. I’m not as bothered about the artcards and booklets but on disc features are always well received.
      The collecting break has been ok. I’m even plotting a shopping trip tomorrow as I trade in a few more unwanted movies.
      My favourite movies will always be physical purchases with the best possible (on disc) content.

    Congrats I used to buy lots of DVDs and Blu-ray . I still have a lot of them, but I haven’t bought any in almost 20 years now when it comes to CDs that’s a different problem. I love streaming, but the feeling of having something physical in your hand so overwhelming not as much as the past but, when I see a nice Deluxe Edition come out of something I like it’s so tempting but I think to myself these deluxe box sets I’m gonna listen to once and it will be sitting and collecting dust so I try to be very selective and what I buy only things that I really would listen to a lot .

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  5 месяцев назад

      I’m with you now on the being more selective part. Now seeing the benefits of using both physical and digital options. I don’t have to ‘own’ it all when there are still so many other options available.
      A lot of the limited / deluxe releases are there to feed our Fear of Missing Out and push us into that purchase. The consideration HAS to be how important the extra ‘stuff’ is to you over just because it’s limited.
      Cutting back and clearing out has certainly given me much more clarity. I feel more at ease with the collection with having less. Also less stressed about feeling like I had to keep ordering more and more.

    Well done, you staid strong and get one step ahead o your journey 👍
    As sad it is to admit it, all I have in my life is work, sugar and collecting 😐 been getting rid of several non-important collections (book, comic, cds games) but still hangin on the movies. Been cutting down new purhases but still time to time I get sucked in thanks to internet add and -sales. Been thinking lately that I cancel my internet . I could go once or twice a week to libary to check out emails and paying my bills, that way I could fokus my free time to organice my collections completely and after that starting to watch films and series I have in my shelves, and maybe start selling them and saving money for my tombstone. . Though, tthough, cancelling internet service would also mean , no more youtube videos ... 😥

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  5 месяцев назад +1

      Don’t think I could go without the internet.
      But… I did take baby steps on removing some things when I started to recognise where the temptation was setting in.
      I unsubscribed to several email newsletters (Zavvi / hmv / amazon etc) and also removed certain groups or people that I followed through social media. The ones that seemed to trigger my spending habit the most.
      I’ve also began to focus on other things beyond the mindless browsing where the temptation lies. I’m reading a bit more now and teaching myself new skills (RUclips being my main learning area with editing / analytics etc).
      I don’t think you need to quit. Just consider what is most important to you and what brings you joy. I was keeping everything and it was causing me a certain amount of stress and anxiety. Stopping and reflecting on what was there and the reasons why helped me be a little more considered with my habits.

      @@PhillwithadoubleL
      For me internet, now days, is not that important. I pay bills, I read few emails (family, office, bureau), watch youtube and random "surfing" when i got bored. So nothing important. Surely internet is full of guides and tips if you got problems ( with pc), or like you, want to learn new skills. But for me library is only 15min walk away so... and, most ideas of new purhaces I mainly get from youtube videos... collection videos, reviews/rants, and of course from commercials before the videos I go watch 🙄 so, no internet - no random surfing - no new purhases.
      Beside, when it comes to sugar and collecting, I am like a alcoholic, one slip and ....
      And , sure, I been thinking what is important me today when talking about physical media. I have always loved to watch movies and series. When I was younger I had free time but little what to watch. Now, I have "everything" to watch but little little free time. And my mental state, many times there are too many ideas going in my head to me be able to consentrade what I am watching 🤪 so way too many times, when I got few hours to do what'ever, I rather organice my collection (or something like it) than watch a movie.
      ...wow, and once again I managed to write a comment way longer than I planned.

    I always feel weird using the word addiction when it comes to collecting, my dad is an alcoholic and I think I shouldn't compare my habits with his as his are much more serious. The more I think about it though the more I realise I do have a problem, i can go weeks without a purchase if i try hard but once I do decide to order I can spend hundreds of pounds of my savings and if there's something I really want I will worry about it all day until I've given in and made the purchase, but then i feel so much guilt about ordering so much, I have even had things sent to other family members houses so that I can hide them from my girlfriend!. I do agree with you that social media putting these things in our faces all the time is a big problem. I only use RUclips but I am seriously considering unsubscribing to my favourite Blu-ray channels which is a very sad thought

    • @PhillwithadoubleL
      @PhillwithadoubleL  6 месяцев назад

      Addiction does seem like it’s a strong word but I think there are many types of addictions that we all can suffer from.
      Collecting Blu ray might not seem as bad but if it starts damaging mental health / financial situation or relationships then it should be thought about and considered as a damaging addiction.
      Temptation is all around and living in a very consumer centric environment it can be difficult to break free or fully realise the extent of any potential problem.
      I’ve changed my habits a lot on making these videos and it’s made me think more about my own behaviours. I still suffer some times and make a silly purchase but it’s easing off. I’ve started to clear out some of the collection and the realisation that not having them is actually helping me feel a little ‘lighter’ is helping.
      I’m currently thinking about imposing a 1 in 2 out rule to try and take down my numbers and consider if a purchase is worth 2 of what I already have.

    Don't think I could do it because I don't stream (to support physical media) so just don't have the ability to find series to watch with my wife. We watch a TV series from physical, taking turns choosing what series to watch, each evening, when we've watched the live/recorded TV we like.
    Also, as a steelbook collector, I know many sell out in a few days or less and then triple in price post-release when OOP so it would be a foolish thing.
    Oh, and as a recovering alcoholic I regularly go into pubs and drink a non-alcoholic option because I refuse to let my addiction affect my sociability with other people... see sharing the enjoymet of a TV series with my wife every evening in line one.
    Well done to you for doing it as that was a difficult goal and I'm honestly impressedm, but, as pointed out in my alcohol recovery session there are some alcoholics that can do 'Dry January' but it's not proving they aren't an addict as they'll return just as voraciously in February...
    Good video though and makes you think.

      I like supporting physical but I got to support it for the right things. I’d been in a habit of buying anything and everything for the sake of it. That’s the habit I want to break. I will continue supporting physical media but only for the things I love.
      Digital gives options which are suitable for many titles (not all).

    This feels like you are creating a argument for digital and streaming services over physcial media (Which is ok) but digital & streaming has a tonne of flaws itself, so you are just replacing one evil for another. The golden period of streaming was 5-10 years ago when it was cheap £5.99pm (Netflix) and the content wasnt fragmented amongst many platforms that now are introducing advert tariffs.

      I don’t mean to argue for streaming. I think it has a place. I’m trying to find a happy medium between streaming and physical. I think they can both co exist.
      For my favourite movies I’ll always go for the physical movies. Im trying more to aim around fighting the habit of thinking I need the physical copies of anything and everything without taking into account other options.
      I want to find a place where I’m only getting physical for movies I appreciate and enjoy and using digital options for anything else in between that I don’t feel precious about owning.
      Losing high street video rental shops hasn’t helped me. What I’d have normally rented in the past had become pick ups because there was no physical rental service anymore. Digital rentals should have filed that gap but it didn’t. Especially in the early days when the steaming quality was questionable
