    Are you still paying someone else to change your oil?
    J&P Cycles' merchant and resident mechanic Patrick will walk you through an oil change on a 2012 H-D Sportster. This will be similar to an oil change on rubber mount Sportsters from 2004 and up.

    Great video! Tips and tricks, I'm not a fan of a dirty bike. Looking around on oil draining found a video that took a news paper and put it under the oil filter. Or a flexible plastic or rubber if kept to use again, but news paper just as easy just make sure it has a shine to it. This way oil will not absorb as fast.

      Oh heck yeah... I change oil on Mopar, Hyundai, Subaru, Kawasaki's Suzuki's, Yamaha, Honda's, Ducati and by far the easiest oil change ever is the Harley. Great design. Many many pro liter bike aficionado's down talk Harley, but their design in certain areas is superior to other makes. The oil and air filter placement is in easy reach, the battery is easy to get to and you really don't need fancy tools for typical maintenance like oil changes, batteries and brake pads. Sooo easy. Changing out the brake pads took me a few minutes because of the floating design. The rear suspension took me about 5 minutes to do as well. Amazing age proven design.

      @KR Maybe Ninja easy, but you still need a socket and ratchet. Not so here, just a screwdriver, or if your in a pinch, a dime. Ha! I changed the oil on my Yamaha YZF R1, what a PITA!

    • @justinluttrell1769
      @justinluttrell1769 5 лет назад

      I'm not an expert but I would imagine warm would be best since that's when the oil's the thinnest...but then again, cold oil has the best chance of already being drained out of the passages.

    I have added a "T" fitting inline with the oil return line. After I drain , refill and change the filter I clamp off the return line between the T and the tank. Fire it up till the oil coming from the fitting in the return line runs clean oil. Then I plug the T off and remove clamp on hose to allow oil back into the tank. top off and I now have a complete oil change. Sportsters retain a good quantity of dirty oil in the sump that will just mix with the new oil if changed the conventional way. When I spend $12 per qt for top quality synthetic I don't like to mix dirty oil with it.

    • @jc5604

      You're still going to have old oil mixed regardless of what you do. In every engine. Every time. If it makes you sleep well at night, cool, but completely unnecessary.

I was thinking it must be why they say to run the bike first. But how do you drain it if you cant run the bike?? Does the bolt on the bottom of the primary work on a sporty for that?

    Hye J&P Cycles. Quick question for you, even though it may be a dumb one. If I have an NRHS 1250 kit installed on my 883 Sportster frame, do I still use the regular oil filter it would normally take without the conversion?

  • @dadtrap
    @dadtrap 8 лет назад +1

    I still have my 2001 1200C and believe me it is this simple. My oil drain line is actually routed to the frame and it in my opinion is better since the hose is not hanging. I have 30,000 miles on it is still my daily driver. Doing the primary is just as easy. For oil 3 quarts does it. Always pre load your oil filter. My baggers are a little more complex.

    So 2 quarts then check it. But basically 3 from what I just watched. Great video thanks for the tips. Pre filling the oil filter is, in my opinion a must!! Anything with engine oil should get the oil pre filled during an oil change to prevent a possible dry start. Helps the oil pressure build a few seconds faster then a complete dry filter does.

    Would you recommend to use 20W50 Mineral over 15W50 Synthetic?

    Hello my name is Arthur I ride a Harley 883 Sportster 2007 I live in Australia I was watching your clip on U tub how to change the oil .. thanks for the hints ... I over filed my bike . And I have oil every were ... The top of the oil pop out .... I have two Q.. No. 1When you check oil did you have the bike strait or leaning on the rest ... No 2Also when you pulled out the plug out to drain the oil do you need to put an o ring ? Because the guy that sold me the oil and the filter gave me this little O ring ... Regards Arthur

      Check the oil level with the bike on the jiffy stand. The O-ring is for bikes with a threaded drain plug, not sportsters. It will work on your primaru drain plug though, so keep t for when you do that service.

      arthur cini you really need to be careful with overfill because if your motor has too much oil you can blow seals on the top end. $$$$$$

      I've read that a common problem is that Harley specified 3.6 quarts for a long time, and it's actually 3 quarts. I was told that 3.6 quarts only applies to a brand new engine.

    Putting the fill cap on can be tricky. Doesn’t always go in so easy, any advice?

    Shouldn't the oil level be checked @ engine operating temp (hot)?

    Does some of the oil spill out of the filter when you are screwing it in ?

    Will it leak? I mean the drain hose...when you run it everyday until the next oil change.

    I had a question about changing my transmission fluid. I seem to have had some oil spill below my bike a day ago. My main oil level seems fine and I cannot see any leaks from the plug below. Therefore I was wondering if it were not my transmission fluid. I cannot locate my manual so I was curious was to how to actually check it. I will say, I added a bit too much gas the right before I noticed the puddle... so I was wondering if gas could have run down the overflow and mixed with some oil on my bike's engine and spilled out on the ground. What do you think?

    Just bought a 2006 sportster 1200 custom from a friend. Would the process and the amount of oi be similar to this?
