First published in 1986 the SAS Survival Manual has been foundation and inspiration for many of the great bushcraft and survival instructors out there. The will to live is number one in the "Rule of 3's" (you can live 3 seconds without hope...a positive mental attitude). No you won't die in 3 seconds but this sets the tone for your whole survival situation. A positive attitude allowed one person to live 9 days (with no wilderness survival training) until rescue while lost in the Sierras in California. Others perish quickly, even people with experience and survival training because they lack the will to live.

Gotta say, as someone who has been struggling with PTSD for the past decade, now that I think about it, a big problem I've had with that is struggling with the will to live. Not necessarily being suicidal (though that has come into play a few times), but just feeling very dead inside. Social disconnection, anger, guilt, etc. And now that you mention it, I feel more alive, more *willing* to live when I'm doing simpler, more productive, more difficult things. When I remove convenience and the distractions of modern living. When I get off my phone and go for a walk, or sit and talk and laugh with people. You've given me a lot to think about. I look forward to hearing more!

Felt the same way for a long time, friend. Before, during, and after my time in service. Only the last year have I really been able to find the will to live, and it came from being presented an opportunity to run a non-profit for veterans that specifically focus both on fitness health and mental health. Now I have a reason to keep myself in shape which has gotten me to walk more, swim more, camp more. And it just feels so easy now when all of the digital and mental distractions are away and I can just focus on enjoying the outdoors again

There’s just simply no point and even now that the retirement age is now set at 70-80 I forget which one, but it’s just very disheartening to see how little our effort will pay off. My liver specialist said I have the liver of a ten year old. it is pristine. I took the treatment for 90 days for the Hep C. gone. I took a shot that lasts 10 years for Pneumonia. No sign of the other illnesses. I watch your channel and many others (I have a new found appreciation of Wool) I try out many things and I am working on my own type of ration bar. I made a sling staff and practice with it. I enjoy making things like alcohol stoves and twig stoves, but now I am focused on oil lamps. I think the will to live is doing well in my life.

do you mean a vaccine against pneumonia? Pneumovaxx? Prevenar20? Something like that? The older (untill last year given) shots last 4-5 years. They only protect against 13-20 types of pneumococcal types. Not all. The new shot called prevenar20 protects against 20 and is supposed to protect a lifetime. (so far the research). But it also only protects against 20types of pneumococcal types. There are many more. AND, ver important, there are also viral pneumonias.

    • @StephyPlantBased
      @StephyPlantBased День назад +1

There are over 90 distinct serotypes of Streptococcus pneumoniae that can cause pneumonia, as well as other invasive and non-invasive diseases such as meningitis and sinusitis. However, a smaller subset of these serotypes is responsible for the majority of pneumococcal pneumonia cases, with serotypes like 1, 3, 19A, and 14 being particularly common

    • @StephyPlantBased
      @StephyPlantBased День назад

Viruses are a significant cause of pneumonia, responsible for about 13-50% of cases. Common viral culprits include:
      • Influenza virus (types A and B) - the most frequent cause in adults.
      • Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) - the leading cause in young children and the elderly.
      • Parainfluenza virus, adenovirus, and human metapneumovirus.
      • Coronaviruses, such as SARS-CoV-2 (causing COVID-19 pneumonia).
      • Less common causes include measles virus and other respiratory viruses like rhinovirus.
Viral pneumonia can range from mild to life-threatening, particularly in immunocompromised individuals or those with underlying conditions.

As long as you stay in the comfort zone it's all like a beautiful game even if with some discomfort unless you do silly things like sleeping in sub-zero temperatures without the necessary equipment. Problems come when you're hungry, you're thirsty, you're really cold, you hurt yourself, you get lost in a forest, you get stuck while climbing a mountain...
When these things happen it is the mind that commands but more than "the basic instinct" I think it is the hours and hours of training that will make the difference. Nice video master! Go on like this.

I didn't realize how much I missed being outside until I started my walks. Now I fish, canoe, camp, hunt, go to events and for me that improved my quality of life.

This would be a great series to develop. There are many problems in the modern world, ones that had been seen before and offered solutions, such as the Boy Scouts here in the USA. Times have changed and those solutions don't seem to be working. More people are feeling lonely, and there is a definite lack of the will to live, or the spirit, in many of us. Comfort, offered by civilization definitely makes it easier to disconnect from that will. As you said though, it is important to keep one foot on the rug and the other outside. Thanks for getting this conversation started!

Stoic philosophy. (I mean the actual philosophy of Seneca and Epictetus, not the popular 'stuff-your-feelings-away' misconception.) That is what has kept me going and led me to sort out my life.
I am going to steal that line, "Lean into Discomfort. The area of growth and learning is always found in the balance between the comfort zone and the panic zone."
It is a perfect summary of why anyone would want to do martial arts, camp in the woods (if you can), or just hike along cliff tops.

To quote one of my favorite RUclipsrs "I exist out of spite." I was lucky enough to grow up with cousins that lived in the boonies of Wisconsin, so I got to experience hunting/fishing/foraging as a kid. My mentor was an old Vietnam War Airborne Ranger who pushed me to join up and try to make it same as him, which I did, and to this day 35 years later seeing the ear to ear grin upon him seeing my in my Class A uniform, Ranger scroll on my shoulder, black beret on my head remains my proudest day. One of my duty stations I was a SERE instructor (Survival Evasion Resistance Escape) for USA and allied chopper pilots, teaching them how to make it out if they ever got shot down. As Wiseman says, if you WANT to live, you can survive anything, but you NEED that refusal to surrender. It was shocking just how few of those pilots really could make it, their lives had been so easy for so long that simply having to butcher a rabbit (they got one live rabbit a day as their ration, anything else they had to forage for) was something some just couldn't do. Being wet, cold, hungry destroyed their will within a day or two, and these were men and woman who could fly a chopper into a firefight without blinking, so they weren't cowards in any way.
Your list of strength/weak matches my own pretty closely, I find I HAVE to test myself every so often, force myself to camp in winter or fast for a period of time to remind myself what a bit of suffering feels like. Mindfulness is a big aspect of survival, BE in the moment, see/hear/smell/feel everything around you. Nature gives so much information if you are able to sense it, it shows you where water is, can lead you to game, and give you utterly beautiful landscapes to marvel at. NEVER skimp on your gear, buy quality and it will serve you well for many years, my ruck is one I bought about 5 years ago and it still (aside from mud and debris now and again) looks and functions almost perfectly. If nothing else, a good knife, hatchet, and ferro rod can be the things that keep you alive if you have little to work with, so get those and you're off to a great start. Another great asset is to find a guidebook for your local area that shows all the wild edibles in your region, here in Colorado there are over 30 types of edible flora literally all around.
This sounds like the start to a great series, looking forward to your next episode!

The best thing a parent can do is let kids play in nature. They learn about nature, learn to enjoy it, not be afraid of it-no it is not our enemy and to even be comfortable with it. IMHO - a history of enduring hardships of all kinds is a strong supporter of the will to live, but you also need a reason - what you call purpose. With a good reason to live, and a strong belief based on experience and training that you can make it, deciding to survive (the will) is easier and seems an obvious choice.
I also think a tradition of honesty and keeping your word is important - after all the decision to survive is a promise to yourself and those who care about you.
I recommend "The Martian" as a movie about survival, and the character's decision "I'm not going to die here" (at 19 minutes) is a pivotable scene.

The most fun and happiness I have had in my life is working at Camp Sloane YMCA. Whilst there, there was limited access to your phone and a rigid schedule. I never ate more and lost so much weight at the same time, all whilst taking care of kids and planning and executing my boating lessons with them. Walking was also the only mode of transport and that place was hilly.
I am now trying to become a full-time musician, but I feel lacking structure and a schedule has left me prone to distraction and with an ongoing injury and it being the time in my life my older friends and family are passing on, it is hard to get outside and do things I love. I miss not living in a city. I miss the countryside and hiking, I miss having command over my body rather than the pain and injury stopping it from reaching what I know it can, and my will when it comes to sweet treats and doing nothing is at an all time low. This video has been a fortunate placement in my time where I feel I need a wake-up call, if you're thinking of doing a series, I am here for it as I feel I need as much help as possible, to get to where I want to be. It seems to me that the thread that ties this all together is Agency. Modern life in all its convenience discourages a sense of personal agency in every way because someone who isn't reliant on specialized products to solve problems is less economically exploitable. Someone who isn't reliant behaves erratically and is hard to control. The "laziness"(I hate the word) and lack of will to live could just as easily be seen as a forced state of internalized helplessness. Coming out of this perception of yourself is really tough. I don't think that it's a matter of personal failing to struggle with it. We are built just as much to rely on other people as we are to manage alone. That's what modern life exploits in us. What helps nurture a will to live? Idk man, compassion for oneself probably.

I love applying play to all things!! But for me the most weakening thing about civilization is the feeling of helplessness that would astound our ancestors; we are no longer legally empowered to provide ourselves with life's basics on our own, and in fact there may be laws in place to actually prevent us from doing those things. For instance we've lost the concept of a commons, land where anyone may camp for free, and instead we have vast areas where you're not allowed to sit down, much less sleep or forage, and forget a free drink of water. There are municipalities that deliberately spray herbicides and pesticides on the thickets where not long ago people in a community gathered fruit for canning, and nuts they'd eat all winter. But in so many places there are no real communities left, people don't settle long enough for that. So we have online communities, thank heavens, which presently sustain us, and help us to learn to be more self-reliant and creative thinkers. Societies CAN change for the better!! Thanks much for your channel!!

When you start to think about the will to live it becomes increasingly illusive. I can be miserable but still want to keep going. Is my will weakened? It could be because on the face of it my mood is down. Or perhaps I want to survive so badly that when something limits that I start to feel down. But work to avoid this negative emotion.
Is my will to live a constant measurable thing? Or am I extremely resilient to somethings but other challanges I crumble?
Frankly, discussions of will to live scare me because I start to think what if I'm not cut out. What if there's something lurking in my future that will catch me out? And frankly I want to survive. I'm only on this Earth because those before me have survived and reproduced. Not that that is the only thing I live for but this is at the root of it all. Having said that I can think of numerous things that I do that aren't conducive to this. Such as eating ultra-processed food. Is my will weak?
Maybe there's a will to live well not just live. Even in a survival situation you could do the bare minimum to survive but you could also go to extra lengths to make yourself comfortable such as adding a heat reflector on your fire. What motivates that?
I suppose having knowledge and kit would increase your will to live as well.
Perhaps the behaviours that reflect a will to live are giving it a go; and not being afraid to fail. These, after all, are some of the most fundamental lessons that we teach children.

But I would add to the "strengthen" list (for myself); stories (books, movie, tv show, a good storytelling friend, a notepad and a good pen); spending time with kids (they remind me to not take things too seriously, and are often wiser than adults and more curious). Your "weaken" list is perfect! No notes!

So cool to see that intro. I have the exact same relationship with that book, it had a slightly different format (it was an unsual format, big and wide, great for the pictures, but not something you really could take with you) though! I constantly kept pulling it down from my fathers bookshelf and kept pouring over it. 😁👍

I know I have to push myself to do either outside or inside exercise or i feel like c*ap, it's that simple. When I've gotten myself into situations in the outdoors or even in urban environments where I've pushed my luck or things have gone wrong i just know i have to effect my environment or the situation is not going to get better. So a sort of bloody minded acceptance is the frame of mind i get into. That personal fight you're having with yourself at these times is a fight worth winning and the victory is very sweet.

Not the will to live, but i remember when younger on an adventure [pennine way]. It rained for days, everything was wet [only a bivi bag] and was thinking of going home.
But the country road bus stop said the next bus time was the better part of the day to arrive - so i could sit there for hours, or just keep walking down the road for a bit.
I kept walking, the rain stopped, sun came out. I happened upon a pub - lunch [and a few pints] later, with my kit drying out on the pub garden bench, and I thought, its actually not so bad!
Learned a lesson over that time...

Stay young at heart ,light. Never think your'e too old to learn or try something new. Keep interested. Stay connected to nature and keep a clear mind. I've re invented myself over and over, after all, we don't exist, we are a mental construct. Two failed marriages, alcoholism, drug addiction, raising a family and starting over again. Learning a martial art at 30 and training in it for 15 years. then deciding to start rock climbing at 50. Because I CAN DO IT. Stay sharp, flexible and be kind to yourself and those you meet. Travel light. Don't carry resentment. LOVE!

The trouble is where people live. My favourite camping place is an island that has no roads or electricity and virtually no modern infrastructure.

I enjoy in engaging in thought experiments. I would just pose the question, "What would I have to do to turn this island into a self sufficient nation that, when discovered, will be recognized by other nations?". I'm not foolish enough to think that's possible, the existing nations can be so picky, but the exercise of working towards that would definitely help and keep my mind constantly occupied.

The thing that would keep me going on a deserted island is knowing that I am the same stardust from the beginning of time, reconstituted into a sentient organic being. We are all the universe consciously experiencing itself based on the laws of conservation of mass and energy. It took my ancestors hundreds of thousands of years to get to the point where I could exist in a relatively comfortable state and if I gave up on that island simply because of the discomfort, I would dishonor the trials and tribulations those who came before me had to endure to get our species to the point it is at.

Was in a huge earthquake. You need petrol or you can't even go to 'the woods'. Petrol stations fell down, the streets were full of rising water, metres deep and full of collapsed power lines, and there were fires everywhere. No access to petrol means you don't leave. Will to live? Seems like everyone suddenly had heaps of it. .

I think sometimes I feel like I can’t shake living in a “movie world” when watching films due to the everyday work & family grind of life. I love being outside but I do feel like Im living in other people’s live in “movies” rather than take charge of my own life.

This is a very broad topic that goes beyond learning how to camp in certain environments or survive after a plan crash in harsh environment. Forgetting older technology has always been a part of advancement in civilization. It's nothing exclusive to modern times. Even the medieval civilizations started to lose older technology from misuse. Such as flintknapping or makeshift tool making. Retaining the knowledge and skill of using older technology through historical institutes is actually more of a modern advancement as well through development and research institutions. Such as the science of trench warfare, blackpowder marksmanship, adobe architecture, etc. It depends allot on how much funding governments and corporations want to put into research institutions.
But it mostly depends on how research institution store the information and make it easy for development projects to reintroduce those technologies. As filming and data storage becomes more advanced and user friendly, these technologies can be stored nearly indefinitely. So there isn't much of a worry now a days about losing technology as there was twenty or sixty years ago. People today are able to reintroduce unused technology into modern civilizations by simply reading a book, watching film or joining a club. That wasn't really the case one hundred fifty years ago. In other words, reintroducing old technology has become an advanced part of research and industrial development like no other time before.

It is bred out of them. You cannot regain what you never had. Most people will freeze, or fold and cry and run in a bad situation. How do I know? 25 years of Fire Department, Medic, Cop and Sheriff. Quite often the people they partnered me with ended up being a detriment in a bad situation - like having to carry a firefighter out of the burning building because he had a mental breakdown. Or a police partner just stood there when we got shot at, frozen. Fight and flight - there is more flight around now than ever.
