I always remember this great thing you said once in one of your videos, that there is something very primal about picking up a stick and start playing with it, waving it around, etc. I love it. (sorry, English is not my first language)
I had pondered some time ago about a tripod walking stick so I did not have to keep cutting new sticks, but I never progressed it any further, so great to see you actually realise and fulfil the idea with extra functions to boot. Well done, great effort, love it.
Love your videos great work, I've got native blood and we too love our sticks. The way we make our best sticks we start with a seed planted by our ancestors.
What a great idea, simply but so elegantly implemented! Thank you for this, Tom: I'll keep an eye out for the perfect tripod sticks when I'm coppicing this year.
Hey Tom, I just saw a bundle of sticks the other day at our local hardware chain. I picked one up and it felt better than the hiking pole I use. It was less in width than a broom handle and it felt like a piece of bamboo. I’m going to get myself one and will add an attachment to the bottom. Informative as usual in your easy going approach.
I really.....REALLY.....like your concept, and the walking stick/tripod is very practical....I daresay genius. Who wants to go schlepping around in the woods looking for the perfect three sticks when you can fabricate them ahead of time, and build your tool before you need it? If you could do a short tutorial video on how you made it, that would be "brilliant", and y'all across the Pond say. Keep up the good work , Tom, and thank you for what you do. I look forward to your next video.
Great video! A Tripod is a very handy bit of kit, and I've seen plenty of homemade ones outperform the expensive ones. I did my DSC1 at Edinkillie Community Hall and Altyre Estate a few years ago and it was a fantastic course.
As For sticks that move; ALWAYS make them HIGHER than YOUR EYES! Ideally, your exact height is the safest and smartest !!! On another note, ... just watched "Outlaw King" : GREAT movie about Scotland's history !!!
Very interesting video with some great ideas and information. Only critique I have is I would have liked to see you make them. I learn visually so hearing people talk about what to do to make something just does not work for me. Also, it seemed like you might have forgot some of the steps. Did you round the ends of the sticks? If so, why? Did you do both ends like that? Did you put holes in the bottom of the sticks like you did the tops? Thanks for doing the video. I am going to check out some of your other videos. Hope to see you making one of these in the future.
bamboo would probably be a good alternative. very light and strong, and although it bends a lot when green, once it's dry it becomes very stiff. you could probably use thinner pieces of bamboo and have the tripod be just as strong, of not stronger. only problem would be finding it in some areas, like here in the desert lol
I use my one 6feet walking stick for the plough point. My pack goes on a tree with cordage and short stick. My pot hangs over fire from a single 3ish feet stick. Sticks n' stones may break the bones but this post may even educate you.
That's neat :) I suppose if you wanted to go even lighter you could take a Y-stick/thumbstick the size of one of those tripod legs and replace the other legs with 2 staked out lines and have them pulling instead of pushing. Make them strong enough and you could even suspend one end of your hammock
Great video. Thank you. I don't know why I have never come across your channel before; damn YT! Just subbed and will start to delve into your vid collection.
Sticks probably were the first tools, the first toys, the first building material, the first for a lot of things. And they still hold up. To quote Shad from Shadiversity: "Stick very good!". I find the idea of using a tripod/walking stick hybrid pretty brilliant. How does it hold up as a walking stick though? Is it comfortable?
Am I the only one that thinks the Sticks got him for good now? I mean, carrying 3 Sticks at ONCE? Joking, Sticks are perfect! xD If you used something sturdier then Hazel, the thinner Sticks wouldn't bend as much. On the other Hand, denser wood makes for heavier gear, so your mileage may vary. Just adjust according to your needs
Excellent question. I’ve never slept in a hammock, but have been considering one. Wondering how it is on old injured backs. It surely has to be better than a ground pad.
Hey bud. I know you're really big on your staffs so I figured I'd share a technique with you that I haven't seen you talk about. Check out the Shepards Leap.
Awesome video, love it! Thank you ~ been a fan of yours for a long time now, well done. Thinking i might try this with two tripods and army tarp when i go camping in Wales at some point 🥳 # side note: reminds me of when i kept my 75 bender poles inside storage only to find out 3 years later that the additional "staffs" i had tucked away meant wood worm ate through the entire lot !!! turned it to dust. Do you have any advice on keeping staffs and poles free of the bleeders ... or is that just part of life? In terms of curing my other staffs, i can go with the chemical root but that wont kill any live grubs. So its either make a "ciln" type thing with foam boards and a heater, or put them in the hot car in the summer for hours 😄
Walking stick makers use either dry or wet heat to make it possible to straighten out natural sticks. I've had a lot of success with a decorator's heat gun played over the point where I want to bend the stick: clamp it in a vice and push it with your hip. You'll soon feel it giving when it is ready to change shape, then you can overbend it slightly until it's the shape you want. It's a quick process which you can repeat until you get the lines faired out to your needs. Steam or boiling water will also work: experiment and see what suits you best.

"Babe.. Come to bed..."
- "I need to watch this first. It's a 13 minute video of a Scotsman talking about a really nice stick he found."
The best stick is more stick! Now you kind of have three at once. Nice job!
you are the first bushcrafter I have watched that ever suggested tripods. Tripods make a lot of sense once you explain it. Thank you.
Scouts use em
I just want to say, before I get into the rest of the video, that the animated intro is super cool.
This video is as grand as the lad who made it.. excellent work.. much appreciated 😊
Thank you so very much😊😊

Really REALLY dig that opening animation! Great job on that and a BIG thanks for the tip on using smoke to get rid of midgets! 😄😁😆😂🤣
Been struggling with my back lately(flatfooted and bad soles) so the tristick seems perfect for me too when I go camping with a back pack

Yes!! A new video from Fandabidozi! ❤

Great video I like both long and short styles of what you're doing and I agree with you and everyone else stick's are great.
I like the new format as well as the high budget videos.

U have unique get up😊.liked that😊

What a creative idea Tom. I’ll have to give it a go at some point 😊
It's sustainable to cut everywhere. Maybe not where you are . But in canada . Lots of dead Forrests in dire need of some cutting .
Great ! It can be also used as a chair. Just need some piece of cloth and additional short stick.
Ok I think this is fantastic. Well done. So simple and so versatile!
You could say its... fantastick...

Sticks are the best 😅🎉
Great video, Tom. Very informative and useful, as always. I need to work on my tripod making skills. Hope you have an amazing weekend. Blessings.

Simple but very handy design!
I always enjoy your videos, Tom. Very useful material. You do a terrific job. Thank you, thank you, so much.
Damn, one stick is not enough - he started combining 3 of them into one!

Congratulations on the video and the channel. You've gained a new subscriber.
Brilliant as ever .❤
Always a good day when you upload!
Thx for filming this and sharing it with us.
I love the bigger in dept video's, but I also really like these simpler kind of video's. Its nice and bite size 😁
I've noticed that you are quite stick-y. Good information, thanks!
great use of the synergetics of the humble tripod🙏

Good stuff man. If you’re ever in Texas hit me up I’ll show you the best camping/fishing spots. Love your work!
"Stick around" lmao
Brilliant as always! Great video! Cheers!
Great idea. Really enjoy your videos
I fucking love the new intro

Yeah, Yew is the BEST!
'curious how you get on with a hammock and an old back injury?
Excellent question. I’ve never slept in a hammock, but have been considering one. Wondering how it is on old injured backs. It surely has to be better than a ground pad.
I got a bad back myself and honestly try a hammock. It's really comfortable
@@sidneypot5259 Cheers - 'appreciate that.
@@sidneypot5259 will do, thanks for the reply.
Slipped disc here. Whenever I spend a night in my hammock, it doesn’t hurt for a day.
would driftwood sticks be good as walking sticks/tripod?
If they’re straight and strong enough then yes, but all the driftwood I find is short or twisty!
Elegant. 👍
Great idea.

i was thinking of something similar in place of 2 hiking poles
Awesome Fandabidozi ❤
Great idea!
That new intro is damn good
That intro was dope! :D
I see you left he bark on the stick, is there a reason for that, in my mind it will only add weight and prevents the stick from drying
Hazel is a pale wood, most walking sticks leave the bark on. Leaving the bark on, slows the drying process and reduces splitting.
Also charing the stick makes it harder.
Not being funny, but for a quick release/quick pack up mechanism, why not use a snap bracelet?

It looks like the fishing shirt I got from Aldi . They are only on sale every now and again
Not sure... Scotland maybe 😂
"A HUNDRED POUNDS FOR A STICK?!? Yah do know where I'm from, don't yah?"
Any tips on how to get a straight stick, they look straight on the tree but when I cut it, its wonky
That may be because of the type of wood. Some trees will dry crooked while others dry straight.

Sanyasis..renounced monks..in India,carry them wrapped in a saffron cloth
Cool stick!!!
Good video!
Fantastick video...
Sorry
great video, have a nice day
Been making them over 40 years 😂
"Shooting stick" .I heard something else at first.
Blowgun The best survival stick!
thats a fabulous jacket! Mind telling me where its from?
StickStickStick!
Yey sticksnn
Completely random question, where did you get your bonnet from?
Until you find some hazelwood, hardwood dowelling might work.
(Tripod joke) 😂
I didn't know they used whatnot where you are at also.
Once again Brill.
Stiiiiicks!
Definitely didn't hear shooting stick. Hahahaha
Oh, SHOOTING stick. That’s not what I heard at first. Must be the accent!
Stickaholic syndrome. 👍
🤔so how does this "Stop" ticks from getting on your pack when they can climb the tripod 🤷♂
When they climb up the stick they end up on top of the stick... and a bird will eat them.
What's up stick natiooooon
The titans behind the big stick industry won't like you teaching people to make their own sticks for free. I hope they don't come after you man.
+1 shitting stick double take
A fishing pole is also…A stick!!!!😅
