Tbf there is alot of video games aswell that use this similar open landscape in mystical settings with beasts an such! Makes for good combat big open spaces!
I like the idea on non-physical tokens. Tourism boards everywhere should start encouraging people to leave a song, a poem, a prayer or a dance in famous places. Particularly with social media, these tributes could be very meaningful.
My great grandmother (I’m 73) was a Texas Farmer’s wife, suffragette and all around tough cookie. She still bemoaned the loss of Bonnie Prince Charlie into the 1950s when she passed. My mother thought he was a scoundrel but would NEVER have told her grandmother. My mother did talk about the reprisals but was very into Robert the Bruce and told more stories about him.
Fantastic work, the unphysical token made me tear up, it has no less value than a dropped coin or that piece of tartan. That tune has it's meaning to you and to those who came before, and that's the best we can hope for most days.
This is so damn cool, so mind boggling, but man I'm here for it. This is by far my favorite video so far, I love the history and story behind it, plus you have such a beautiful country. I wish we had places like this with historical backgrounds still untouched here in America. God bless bud from ole Carolina.
I really enjoy the history along with the fact you dress the part. It’s nice to see you out and about hiking up and down all the beautiful hills that you have! Such a beautiful sight to see.
What an achingly beautiful video, this.. We felt we were walking along with you.. as we so longed to be.. What an adventure, this.. to sleep in the cave where Prince Charlie once lay.. and so good to hear those brave seven men were not captured .. but lived long and happy lives.. We found this video mesmerizing.. so strong were the spirits of those men who had once been there.. literally gave us goosebumps as you bravely followed their trail over those mountains.. Thank you so very much for this incredible video.. one of your best we believe.. Btw the music you played on your flute in Prince Charlie’s cave was exquisite.. you play so beautifully 🌹 We loved this video.. and so appreciate the beauty of Scotland.. we actually love the rain!! Thank you Tom for sharing this amazing adventure with us.. we admire your strength and courage.. and look forward to your next adventure! Slan mo charaid William and Jen 💜💙🌱🌹🦋
If you're Scottish you are amongst a dying breed . This man brings back to you your history and tradition. Take away the religion and a nation united ,as a strong voice. ❤
I really admire your traditional Highlander apparel and gear and how you put a lot of effort into your content on your channel , Happy Trails dear Sir , and be well .
Hi you need to write a book too because if the SH1t hits the fan we would have something physical to use. Do you ever encounter tourists on your travels and do they think you are a ghost? You're amazing. 😊
What an excellent adventure! I particularly liked the translations for the peaks. Getting a glimpse into how our ancestors once lived and used the land is fascinating.
Spent many hours looking for a cave where I grew up. According to the "legends" a man lived there to avoid military service in the 18th century. Ended up finding two caves, easily one of my top moments when hiking 😄
Hi Tom! First wanted to say, the new intro is fantastic!! As a pyrography artist myself, it’s absolutely stunning. (What a craftsman that helped you!) Secondly, I’m a Scots-Irish folk practitioner that studies the old ways of cunning, historic culture, and more. Your tribute to the spirits of those men was breathtaking and brought a tear to my eye. In the speed of our modern world, very few people slow down and observe the history that can be seen all around us, and the ancestors who came before. Leaving offerings of small trinkets and biodegradable food and drink are commonly encouraged for those who practice spirituality. But I have always used music-specifically my voice-to honor spirits of the land, its inhabitants, and those who’ve passed on. Your song most definitely was heard and appreciated by those men, and everyone you’ve shared it with here. Keep on 💚
The real Scottish flag is bue with a thistle , or harp, or in refuge the white rose...the word hex comes from.the x ... itsittle known knowledge from the study if ancient Irish manuscripts in ollscoil na galway early 90s ...
Great adventure Tom and wow pretty simple shelter in those caves. Makes you wonder what the landscape was like beautifully forested. Thanks for all your effort…👍
Honestly God bless you sir! You’ve been a breath of fresh air in this crazy and lazy world. You’ve been an inspiration for me to the point I even made my own (terribly made I’ll add 😂) great kilt and bought a basket hilt sword! Thank you for all you do!
You're work in this channel is truly wonderful. My direct ancestors came from Ayrshire and the Highlands, and the romantic and sometimes tragic history of Scotland is very meaningful for me. Thank you!
So cool. I love these peeks into the past. I bet the 7 men went to Canada with those Guineas. Montreal or York to trade beaver pelts with the North West Company
Wonderful adventure! Thanks for sharing! I’m visiting Scotland in the Spring, and I’m very excited. Just out of curiosity, what are the UK’s laws about carrying blades? I heard that one cannot carry a pocket knife in the UK, but then I see you venturing out with a sword.
Beautiful video, Tom. As I lay in bed with a broken humerus, I find confort in the landscapes you share so generously with us, your viewers/subscribers. I can't wait to recover and embark myself on some sort of similar adventure in the great outdoors. Glad that you can live and work on what you enjoy. Thank you and best wishes. Keep it up, you crazy highlander! 💪🏻 Ps: I have the same Bahco laplander and Leatherman that you show in the video, great tools for beginners (like I feel I still am), I must say.
Myself and a colleague were traveling through the borders looking for lunch..a sign Robert the Bruce's cafe' we it was actually Robert the Bruce's CAVE!
Thank you for this beautiful story! There is such power in storytelling. As I live in Canada, the story of Bonnie Prince Charlie wasn’t part of my education. I’ve heard bits and pieces of it over the years, but the story of these seven highlanders is new to me. I thoroughly enjoyed all of it. Hearing your lovely melody, shared as a token to the Prince and his companions filled my heart with joy. I firmly believe that we can share a part of our energy with a place. In that moment, it felt like you were sharing space with the Prince and his companions.
These regions of yours are beautiful to watch but I guess one would feel miserable in survival mode right there. The moment you enter the cave, I couldn't imagine myself staying in it for other reason than pure survival like the prince. I don't mind rough life as I live a simple one but still this is challenging. I can imagine how you've felt during the night. Staying for a longer period in this kind of place must test your mind. I would think too much about a way out I guess... Thanks for sharing this story that I haven't heard of.
What a great adventure! I love your historical trips, and for all several reasons this one resonated even more with me. Thank you for taking us along 😊 -Alexander
It’s by loch Lomond… where they fought a pack of wild boar…. The Makinnens took him over to skye. It became the crest on their silverware…. My gt gt gt grandaddy old Alexander Mackinnon got him from Skye to Ireland…. I still have some silverware…
There's a good book called The Prince in the Heather by Eric Linklater that is well worth a read. It's decades old but freely available on-line at the usual second hand book sellers.
Can't believe I only just saw this! I'm a long time subscriber from Australia and I'm currently on a sort of ancestral heritage journey through the highlands and islands of Scotland (right now I'm in my tent at the top of corrieyairack pass, listening to rutting stags in the distance). I too recently went hunting for a cave associated with the Jacobite rebellion! Cluny Macpherson hid for 9 years in a cave on Creag Dhubh, the clan's sacred mountain (and its war cry), and as a Macpherson and someone who loves exploring the wilds I had to try and find it. I had a promising GPS coordinate, but sadly the last 20m traverse was just too steep and exposed to risk without climbing gear, so I'll never know if the cave was there :( Quite an adventure regardless!
Your animations are fantastic! I really enjoyed watching your adventure, I wish I could roam freely with a big stick! Knowing my luck I would meet a snakey.🤣
Enjoyed the blend of living history / survival & actual history 😊 - very pretty area too, and I really like how your survival knowledge plays a role in evaluating your surroundings. The land itself had a part to play & that really came through for me strongly today. (I live on a farm - but it is a modern one, despite my garden providing food & herbs…. so even my life is so removed from how folk lived “back then”!) Thoughts like these are why I enjoy your channel. Ok - just adding one other thought… your Orkney neighbors had strong ties to Norway & as I live there now - I am curious… one often hears of Viking raids in Ireland and Britain… well, Tom, how far back in time do you want to travel? I may need to do some more reading. Dorothy Dunnett wrote a book about MacBeth - seemed very rooted in history for being a novel. But I am going to have to dig around a bit now… hmmm…🤔
adventure vibe is doing good shelter in the wilds vids you should do a cpl like he doing.. wish i could come scotland an have a go somewhere up in the hills ... too
Ironically, considering the Jacobites opposition to rule by 'a wee bit German lairdie', the Stewart succession has now settled on the Duke of Bavaria, Franz von Bayern.
I've been subscribed to your channel since COVID and this is the first time RUclips has shown me a notification from you in over a year.

The highland landscapes always look to me like you should turn a corner and come across some mythical beast, a magical place it seems.
I'm waiting for the trail to crest a ridge revealing a dolmen or standing stone circle!

It's a real shame how much of the forest is gone from the highlands, can't imagine how beautiful it must've been
Fortunately they're some great projects that are doing what they can to restore it. Visit Glen Affric if you can, it's really beautiful

In public places - you can only carry a non locking penknife of less than 3 inch
You must have a reason to be carrying it so if you're out camping it's fine. 👍
