So that's the bloodsucking parasite marine animals have to deal with? I'll never complain about mosquitoes again.
Yeah but lampreys are delicious and mosquitoes aren't.
If something has existed physically unchanged for 400 million years it must be doing something right.
Well said!
Nope it's simply because parasites live good
@@chezus7716 so its doing something right
@@astick5249 No,dont you realize that evolution will take all the nasty ways around as cheap as possible to survive ivn if it keans destroying its own self its like those corrupt people that want so much money that they would ķill someone for it,in this case it will destroy fish and then it wont have anything to eat and it will dissapear before evolving again we should rather only eras le these things rather than the other fish too since you know the other fish dont destroy the ecosystem.
@@chezus7716 no parasitism is like predation exept the "prey" lives making it better
Lamprey are fascinating and little understood animals! Great video guys.
Hey where's that great auk documentary?
Is it weird to say I am now both disgusted and fascinated by these creatures?
Welcome to the wonderful world of zoology. Get used to the feeling ;)
Same
same here
Maddie has serious competition now
Fish are one of the most perfect, beautiful, powerful, adaptable, dangerous and truly fascinating creatures in Nature. Fish are always changing, adapting, mutating and evolving towards becoming the most perfect organism.
To add to that
Fish are quite easy capable of dominating all the lands, waters and skies of Nature if they are given the right adaptations, mutations and if they are placed in the elemental and environmental conditions.
Fish can come in an unimaginable or infinite variety of shapes and species, they can be in many sizes, have many, many bizarre and beautiful colors and have amazing patterns on their bodies along with having such fascinating and wonderful behavior characteristics.
I've always loved Fish and had a fierce respect and honor for them.
I appreciate the comment regarding the Great Lakes. Here they really are an invasive species and have caused an immense amount of damage! I live on the coast of Lake Erie, and the effects are visible. Besides that, I honestly DO see how they're a beautiful animal, and in conditions such as those over the pond, the protected status is completely understood!
For that matter...why don't you just come get ours? ;)
Fun fact, sea lamprey are native to lake Ontario and the St Lawrence river
Four other lamprey species are native to all the great lakes
The only reason people in north America are killing them is to protect non native game fish like Coho salmon
Thank you ..BBC Earth unplugged for this video...iam studying about lampreys in my college..
What are you studying about them specifically?
WiseSageBum MSc zoology
Lizzie is so enthusiastic about everything she sees and shows, it´s contagious!
Lizzie has balls of steel. My god... the amount of nopeness in here
I was wondering about their anatomy, but out of all the things I was wondering about them, the gills interested me the most. I noticed that they don’t have typical gills that you would find on a normal fish, they have around six holes in their neck area. I was wondering if they perform the same function as gills or I they are there for another reason.
With hundreds of millions of years apart from some other species, it seems that they could be old school gills.
Has this video changed your opinion on Lamprey?
BBC Earth Unplugged nope. Why do they have holes for their gills?
Noel Blackketter the video literally says that they are a fish. So what if they don't have bones? Neither do sharks so sharks are mammals now?
They are _sort of fish_
They're in the same class as hagfish (which aren't actually fish either), lack most features of fish like proper gills, jaws, fins etc. but waaaay back when evolved from the same species.
Thumbs up for Lizzie!!
BBC Earth Unplugged I like the way you hold that lampry.
I think I'm in love.........with the nice lady here 😍😂
In the US we also have a native species called the brook lamprey, that only grows to about 25 cm and is sort of a leathery greenish color. If I understand correctly, it remains a filter feeder for all its life, and (possibly due to water-quality issues) it's endangered in some states.
We don't have any invasive lamprey , they are all native
People are killing them to prop up non native game fisheries in the great lakes like Coho salmon
That does not square with my understanding of the Great Lakes' ecology or geography. If you've got a theory on how native fish have escaped being impacted, or how the sea lamprey was able to spread above Niagara Falls before the canals were built, I'm all ears.
@@typacsk The sea lamprey is native to lake Ontario and st Lawrence river, which naturally flow into the north Atlantic , the expansion of the sea lamprey was only to the the other great lakes, but currently is being eradicated everywhere even in lake Ontario where they have always been.
The other four species of lamprey have always been native to all the great lakes and are currently almost extinct because of the use of lampricide and the public hysteria. İt is nearly impossible to target one kind of fish , with poison, let alone various species of similar fish.
The devastation from the spread of sea lamprey from lake Ontario to the other great lakes was mostly after the 1930's, coincidentally after the great lakes had been completely overfished and right around the time that humans started to poison them with pollution on a massive scale, but nobody gets the blame aside from one of the oldest fish on earth. All the great lakes are so similar , if lake Ontario could handle sea lamprey, likely the others could as well , the hysteria really grew out of propping up game fisheries like Coho salmon, which are completely non native and must be stocked . İf you look up all photos of sea lamprey devastation the fish suffering will always be some stocked non native European trout or Atlantic salmon , you never see photos of native sucker fish or muskies suffering.
It seems there's gonna be an Aquaman movie in the near future. If he can control a swarm of these the movie will be a horror film.
Lamprey is delicacy dish for Portuguese and Royal English Family. To cook it just remove the skin and chop the head and the blood is cooked soaking the rice. I drink the lamprey blood with Port wine.
Here in Latvia fried lampreys is a quite popular meal - just fried on a rye bread. At least once I've helped my granny to cook them at home, but I don't like the taste.
A smoked eel on the other hand is one of the tastiest things I've ever eaten. Too bad they are quite rare and expensive.
For all of you hope you are havening a Good day
Wow! This is so cool! Thank you BBC!
Looks like I may need to break up with Maddie
how Did Lampreys kill a King?
Henry I of England ate so many he died of food poisoning caused by the lampreys.
Fascinating! I love lampreys, I find them to be unique and intriguing creatures. I came across a few freshwater lampreys during some fish research. Definitely a rewarding find.
0:05 That's what she said
BlacknWhiteLive bahahahaha
I dissected a lamprey in my Marine Science II class back in around September. It was quite interesting. And very foul smelling. However, its smell paled in comparison to that of the Cookiecutter Shark.
In german they are literally called Nine-eyes
What was that Tudors/GoT-esc show with Jeremy Irons as the pope? I think I remember someone getting pushed into a lake and killed by lampreys, haha
Borgia?
I like the way you hold that lamprey.
When we fished in Norway my friend caught a Haddock that had a Lamprey hanging off it.
He’s got some pretty cool equipment! I wonder where I can get them??
Once I hear an animal is an engineer I love them more :D
:D She's so cute (not the lamprey), especially with that lovely grin at the end! 😊 And the lamprey is just like if it would have come from another planet! Spectacular!!! :)
She certainly is!
These guys wreaked havoc in the Great Lakes.
Not really mostly that was man made pollution and overfishing
Sea lamprey are native to lake Ontario and the St Lawrence river
Four other species of lamprey are native to all the great lakes
People are killing them in the great lakes to prop up non native game fisheries like Coho salmon
Wonderful creatures! I had no idea they drag rocks to make little spawning grounds.
In Japan,we eat Lamprey by sashimi,Yakiniku,dried,etcet.....
Now I know where Seiko Monster(Srp307 for example) got its name!
This is what Yoopers and the Natives have to worry about in the Upper Peninsula. I would know.
So they are like Vampires those Lampreys.
Their mouths really creep me out! Guess I'm not the only one :p
0:05 ....bet thats not the first time shes said that
2:20 is that maddie?
I liked this video tho +1
Lizzie is awesome :)
Aww what a baby
6:25 you think if I fall from this height it’ll kill me?
This chick looks like a hybrid of Rashida Jones from Parks and Rec and Dee Reynolds from It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia.
Which is to say you looks nothing like either woman
Actually, I think we have four species of non-parasitic lamprey in Slovakia. Not all of the lampreys are bloodsuckers.
if you could just take our lampreys from lake superior somehow that would be great
yeah, those lampreys werent fighting, i can assure you that.
Suddenly realise that the creatures in ‘Aliens’ are based on animals that live here on Earth. That second set of teeth that drills into a victims flesh…Jeez.
One of those killed Boba Fett.

Hang on a minute, this isn't BBC, nobody said 'Hi I'm Maddie'.
That looks like he is a ghostbuster 2:17
In U.S., it is invasive. Anyway, it looks frightening!
No, they aren't
People are killing them to prop up non native game fisheries like Coho salmon
Are these things edible?
most fish are edible.
According to GoT, they make great pies. ;)
ciceros flambe what is GoT
Angel Martinez thats why they catch them.
Yes, although some species have toxic parts that need to be removed first.

Leave it to some kook to think a parasite is beneficial to a fishery.

Lovely Eating.
Gross ugg..

Lizzie is great, but she aint no Maddie!
It's just they are bad in the Great Lakes and ugly.
Not really
Sea lamprey are native to lake Ontario and the St Lawrence river
Four other species of lamprey are native to all the great lakes
People just kill them to prop up non native game fisheries like Coho salmon that are stocked
No me Gusta
lampreys is truly evil fish
Evil is a human concept. It doesn't exist in the animal kingdom; there it's all about survival.
😂😂😂
Fish are friends not food
WTF THOSE THINGS ARE NOT CUTE. IVE GOT BITTEN BY ONE, NOT GOOD!
Kind of telling that your photo is 3x bigger than the lamprey in the cover picture. Ego much?
I dont like this
i thought this vid was gonna be about feminism based on the thumbnail
Giraffe Animation whats your problem?
Nope there’s nothing that’s great about these animals yuck
nope.avi
How often does it happen that humans (or non-fish animals which happen to walk through a river) get bit by them?
They don’t bite humans. They don’t like the way we taste! And they don’t prey on warm-blooded animals, unlike leeches, who find us tasty.
I watched a rather reckless youtube channel owner try to get lampreys to attach and feed on him. He tried with three different lampreys, holding their mouths down against his skin. The lampreys halfheartedly tried, but after a couple of perfunctory scrapes and tastes, they just wouldn’t dig in and feed. They were obviously saying no, thank you. Sorry, but you just don’t taste good!
@@tigerlilly5579 Thanks! That's a relief :D
