Clemson prepping to LEAVE the ACC? + The CFP-ESPN $7.8B Deal MISSING PIECE | College GameDay Podcast

  • In this edition of the College GameDay Podcast, Rece Davis and Pete Thamel dive into Clemson's lawsuit against the ACC - specifically how this impacts the future of Clemson, Florida State and North Carolina with the league, and whether or not ACC will even remain. They also get into how this affects less profitable football programs like Northwestern, Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, and Indiana, then take time to underscore how important it is for programs like those to become more competitive in order to not get left behind. Plus, they shift their attention to the College Football Playoff - ESPN six-year $7.8 billion contract and question how it's fathomable that players aren't getting a cut of the pie. Lastly, Pete shares the news that Washington's Troy Dannen replaces Trev Alberts as Nebraska AD, and that Iowa's OT Kadyn Proctor is reentering the portal and rejoining Alabama.

Why, yes it does because most of the schools just dabble in football, they aren’t serious about it and don’t need the money to remain competitive with the elite teams because they have never been competitive and never will be. I personally think they belong in the BIG 10 and will end up there. But the thought the SEC would rather take UNC or UVA over FSU Clemson is mind boggling to me. Let me ask you this which games sound more appealing?
Clemson UGA, FSU Auburn, Clemson Tennessee, FSU LSU, Clemson BAMA, FSU Texas OR
UNC UGA, UVA Auburn, UNC Tennessee, UVA LSU, UNC Bama, UVA Texas......

Keep in mind ESPN and FOX have tons of content out west with the conferences they have now and CBS with MWC and BiG10 conferences. This notion the networks need the PAC recreated or whatever is false and grasping at mythological facts that are utter rubbish and fallacies. If the ACC reforms itself out of this but not recreate or rebuild but reorganize and reshuffle the alignment and membership, then WazzU and OzzU most likely would end up as part of the Westen Wing of ACC with 10 schools back East and all that stuff SMU and others did to be in the ACC becomes all for naught, lol 😅. Could be. If FSU, Miami, Clemson, and UNC are able to completely restructure the ACC but meet the 15 teams requirement for Olympic sports by keeping Notre Dame in for those, they could look like something of the following where they get way more than Big12 but still less than BiG10 and SEC but not as big of a gap from the top 2 conferences but still a gap.

Allow kids to have agents, allow kids to get paid by the schools, standardize the contracts for being paid (by the school/league) which means they are required to play for two years for freshman contract with x amount for your third year.give insurance guarantees. Players with a contract can’t transfer in those 2 years without paying a large percentage back. And ideally you back load for the big payout with clear milestones (like being a starter).
You can’t control nil but you can raise the bottom’s quality and stabilize those teams…. Some teams will pay more with nil but they will have a higher roster turnover… especially if good players keep getting replaced. Look at fsu and Ta&m…. Very little depth is sticking around, Clemson on the other hand has very little exodus… its two philosophies that could battle it out every year. New drama, lets go!
Paying players allow you to give stipulations. Get a player union together, let them negotiate stability, and players that sign contracts have guarantees and players that don’t can go where they want

If you would’ve cared about schools wanting out, there was time when the landscape began shifting. When the SEC snuck in and took the two top brands from the Big 12, anyone with half a brain knew things were changing. That was the time to address it. Not now while the Power 2 will strangle anyone not taking in similar funds. These others just cannot compete. It’s about survival at this point. If all things are equal from a financial standpoint I’d bet fsu would rather stay in the ACC. But it’s not a d if they want to compete at anything above G5 level they HAVE to move.

    • @Keith_X

When fsu joined the ACC the talk was that the ACC would improve in football. Has it? Maybe in some cases yes. Others say back collecting the paycheck and chose not to invest in their football programs. Now the time is coming that these regrets will echo.

IF and this is a big IF......the ACC wants to survive, then they need to restructure the tv revenue sharing.
FSU, Clemson, UNC, NC State, Miami, VT and UVA should receive at least $15,000,000 each more than the other schools because, the simple fact is that those schools bring in more tv views, more merchandise sales, etc.
If the ACC would do this, it would satisfy those 7 schools (at least temporarily) and keep the conference afloat for a little while longer.

That still doesn't put them on par of the other conference schools they're competing against. They're going to need $80 million per year to compete. Reece Davis, I have no doubt you are very aware the ACC/ESPN Contract terminates in 2027. The GOR date of 2036 plaster’s over that fact & surely you know ESPN has informed the ACC we are not renewing the ACC/ESPN Contract. At least, until you know what the conference looks like before you put forward a monetary figure?? For you two to put a Podcast out that Florida State University’s brand is worthless sicken me, because you have access to tv viewership numbers: Let’s have fun & put some hypothetical matchup’s: Ohio State vs Florida State, Michigan vs Florida State, Michigan State vs Florida State, Penn State vs Florida State, USC vs Florida State, UCLA vs Florida State, Oregon vs Florida State, Washington vs Florida State. I could keep going, but there are a lot of attractive games that will have viewers from across the nation tuned in to watch these matchups. Both of you know footsies are well underway & the B1G has an escalator clause in their contract. I am speaking for Florida State because I am a Seminole Alumni & Booster: Sports Illustrated published an article about Florida State University’s tv viewership from 2014 - 2023 being as high as 4th - a low of 8th in tv viewership during those year. While FSU had a few down years it did not affect tv viewership. While ESPN has you two trying spin a poorly written script. FOX is speaking clearly as too whom they want that will bring eyeballs for B1G games. FOX Sports has a very good opportunity to unseat espn as the 1st place to turn too for Sports! Florida State has home & home series with Alabama & Georgia. Clemson will not be left out!
