Even then, you could tell that Billy's influences were split between punk, what was going on at the time, and his earlier love of blues and rock bands like Free. As much as I love many other bands from the time, Billy's guitar just shone so brightly. Let's not leave Jamie out, though; such a fantastic bass player.
@@jamesfisher661 Billy does a cracking job, but then again he was several streets ahead of Buzz at the time and has only got better - that's not to criticise Buzz because he originated the eighties goth sound because I'd heard nobody play that was until I saw SDC on The Tube
Yeah man,I've been watching this since the early eighties, and the band, especially Jamie,(as a part time bassist,I would say that)is first class,,in fact,as Ian would say,"FUCKIN EXCELLENT"
I agree with you. The Cult lost an integral part of their sound when they booted Nigel Preston and tried to replace the beat with Matt Sorum, who is more of a good timekeeper than a drummer.
Sorum didn't replace Preston, that came MUCH later. He was replaced by Les Warner even though Big Country's Mark Brzezicki recorded tracks in the studio prior. Drugs are a bad. Nigel was GREAT!
Nigel sadly died of an overdose on April 1st 1992. He was a fantastic drummer and thankfully his contribution to this wonderful band is recorded for eternity. RIP Nigel x
The Cult ❤ best band EVER bar none! Consistently unique and ahead of their time IMHO! Oh and Ian so beautiful and talented! His smile, his beautiful face 😍 I absolutely adore this man 😍
When they decide to do a farewell tour, they better damn well play this underrated & sadly overlooked song as an encore (as they do here!). Remember, this is originally a Southern Death Cult song but The Cult version R😎CKS BALLS OUT! 👊😎🎸
I remember listening to this live album non stop at the time. Then I went with a bunch of mates to see them in Norwich in 1985, a month or so before they released 'She Sells Sanctuary'. I honestly thought they were the best thing I'd ever seen or heard, I thought Billy was a magician on that guitar. Great days :)
Ovaj VHS koncert kupio sam u Londonu 1986 i jos uvek imam tu kasetu . Fenomenalan koncert ove odlicne grupe ! VHS je placen 19.99 funti , ali u to vreme mi nije bilo skupo !
I remember buying the Dreamtime Live LP then ordering the VHS of the concert. My dad saying, "What a goddamn creep" only made me like it the more! Wish I still had the video...
Best part is when Ian opens the note and gets bubble gum or something all over his hand. The second best part is the exceptional bass playing. It's almost being played like a 6 string guitar. So original and extremely talented.
It was a fans note requesting the band aid off of his right thumb, YUK! He chucks the note down and peels off the band aid and passes it to the fan for a keepsake of Ian. Throughout the rest of the song he licks the blood off his unhealed wound and wipes his thumb down his face. He later picks up and pockets the fans note for his own keepsake. I wonder if he still had that note today, or if the fan still still has the soiled band aid today. YUK!
THANKS!!!!! It bugs me to ANNOYANCE how this BRILLIANT BAND are almost impossible to buy in British shops. The box set, including ALL the Manor Sessions, is deleted, or only available across the water, or £200 online via Amazon etc...WTF??
I think I saw them at "The Seaside Festival,La PANNE,BELGIQUE" with the Cameleons,... ,and The Cure to finished this Beautiful Day.But don't ask me the Year,...
I could tell it was Jamie on bass by his movements. A pretty cool, reliable bassist. When he got fed up and left, the band were not the same to me. Sort of like Alan Wilder leaving Depeche Mode.
Such a great version of the Southern Death Cult original. Nigel's drumming, Jamie's tight bass playing and Billy's powerful guitar work give the song so much more urgency. Brilliant performance from Ian too. "Time for bed everybody"
Took me ages to get a copy of this live album, and it was well worth the wait!!! Still as good as ever. Listen to there last album "Born into this" It rocks!!!
And yes, the Canadian VHS contained a CD copy of the audio. The sound on the VHS is pretty poor because it was recorded without a HiFi track. Which is stupid. But you could get that CD/VHS set, pull the VHS video and CD audio to a computer, sync up the better-sounding audio to the picture, and then make a DVD of that. Pretty big pain in the arse to properly watch one of the best recoded gigs, ever! BTW the vinyl and cassette were each originally sold for $1.99 (abridged concert version.)
Oddly enough they are going to be doing a tour soon where they will play the whole Love record in it's entireity. Granted it's a bit more straight ahead rock than the Death Cult & Dreamtime stuff but still be great to hear the likes of Brother Wolf/Sister Moon & Big Neon Glitter for the first time in many years.
Well, damn! I met him years ago and could have asked but I doubt he'd even remember. I was surprised how nice and down to earth he was, I didn't even realize it was him until half way into our conversation.
It's not been available for years, I bought mine when the Dreamtime album came out in 1984, but I got the 'Gimmick' clip from the Canadian version that came out in the late 90s, which had the full set on. The original version didn't have that song on it. You see them crop up on Ebay from time to time.
I used to have the Dreamtime Cassette and the CD but foolishly threw the cassette out when i was clearing my parents flat out. If i remember correctly the cassette had the majority of this concert at the Lyceum on the B side. I also had the video of this concert. To this day that concert and W.A.S.P's Live In The Raw (Recorded in 84 at the Lyceum) remain my 2 favourite concert videos. These older style venues are much better for sound than modern soulless arena's
@Kelly14UK There's no offcial dvd of the show. I've got it on VHS but it's a bit pish quality. Might be someone who's transferred it. You can get the Lyceum live audio on itunes for £7.99. Decent quality.
The kids of a coca-cola nation, too doped up to realize...This is such an excellent concert from their most interesting period. Plus Nigel shreds on drums. This needs to be released on DVD!!!

Kinda like a lot of these older/rare CULT songs seem better today, than the new songs...like Hidden City isn't very good compared to the rare/cult classic's in my veiw...they lack really good rhythm & back bone, that most of the first albums & songs have...dig it ? Cool rock on Cult fans...
Yeah i like earlier&rare cult a lot more too...I've been listening to hidden-city over & over ...hoping that it might start sounding better... But it's still sadly just OK at best...the good old days are gone... Rock On
Accidently threw out the chrome cassette when I moved house ( EXPLETIVES). Is the DVD of the gig easily available? CD? Can't BELIEVE I DID that... God's Zoo, Christians, Bone Bag...
Nigel was gifted but a junkie, no more no less. When we played with The Cult (later that year) they had to slow down each and every song cos Mr Preston couldn't hold the pace. Sad story...

They were so great then Billy Duffy fucked it up by playing around with Ian's insecurities as he wanted a gigantic motorcycle, and having blowjobs from porn actors in LA. Boring and wasteful. Poor Ian. Duffy looks about 300 years old now : bad plastic surgeries + too much sunbed. Good.
Ian's voice was SO clean and strong at that time!
we needed to see more camera time dedicated to the great Nigel Preston - what a performance, fantastic drummer
I thought Astbury was a god: the hair, the ribbons, the sweatbands, the chicken dance and the Death Cult EP. A magic time of youth
The chicken dance, is that what you called it. i always thought he was just trying to emulate Indigenous North American dances.
1984 -1986 my favorite era of this band.
Amen praise God’s Zoo
Mine too
Off the charts! I will be listening to those albums till the day I die
They really were the best band in the world at this time!
RIP Nigel Preston.
Best Cult line up!!!! Hands down!
no contest. They sound so much interesting here than in their "hard rock" phase...
Christina Ramirez i agree, this song for real punk rock
Face it. We will NEVER see this like ever again
agreed!
Even then, you could tell that Billy's influences were split between punk, what was going on at the time, and his earlier love of blues and rock bands like Free. As much as I love many other bands from the time, Billy's guitar just shone so brightly. Let's not leave Jamie out, though; such a fantastic bass player.
Well the guitar part was written by Buzz Burrows, not Billy, but I get what you're saying
@@jamesfisher661 Billy does a cracking job, but then again he was several streets ahead of Buzz at the time and has only got better - that's not to criticise Buzz because he originated the eighties goth sound because I'd heard nobody play that was until I saw SDC on The Tube
SDC sound was very close to rockabilly/psychobilly.
Dreamtime LIVE at The Lyceum......my favorite Cult album hands down!! The LIVE video is monumental. One of the best live vids ever.
Hands down bar none
Agree 💯
WORD!
Jamie Stewart on fire !
Yeah man,I've been watching this since the early eighties, and the band, especially Jamie,(as a part time bassist,I would say that)is first class,,in fact,as Ian would say,"FUCKIN EXCELLENT"
People wouldn't believe that was the same band, after seeing this, and some Sonic Temple clips after that!
Three words - absolutely mind blowing
one of my absolute guilty pleasures - i LOVE this song
I agree with you. The Cult lost an integral part of their sound when they booted Nigel Preston and tried to replace the beat with Matt Sorum, who is more of a good timekeeper than a drummer.

Ah yes-how could I have forgotten Les Warner? I loved his drums.
whoever the drummer is on this is epic.
His smile, his beautiful face 😍 I absolutely adore this man 😍
Monumental performance period. 💗
This song still kicks you know what thank you ian and billy!🤘

Saw them at Glasgow Barrowland last week..they did this & Sanctuary as the encore...absolutely phenomenal

Just listen to the heart and emotion. You'll not find any of this in them crappy Now That's What I Call " Music" albums.
Think we've all been robbed.
My favorite early Cult tune - brought over from Southern Death Cult. So many influences you can hear but also original.
Love this song. And Bad Bones
YES!!!!...MOYA..great sound!!!💖
Great gig I remember it well I was 17 years old and it was the 2nd time I'd seen them live 👍

"Time for bed everybody"
This is one of The Cults' finest moments. The way Astbury expletes "fuck em all ", just for one example. Stay Safe y'all.
I truly love this!
Moyà and spiritwalker the Cult at there best 🎸🎸
1988 cruising around Swartz Creek in my piece of shit truck jamming this, good times.

A very underrated band ... I very much enjoyed how they evolved ...☠
Ian Astbury was the idol of my later teens. However, I prefer having him singing with a British accent.
I would buy a DVD of this concert and hang it on the wall
