Bob didn’t write this on his own. The original funk brothers, which didn’t include Babbitt, help him immensely. That’s the truth, like it or not.

      He still played it well!!

@@David-vu7zy Yes.. it’s just he had help. That’s the truth. He had to be taught how to play it. If it were the legendary James Jamerson….it would be been out of this world.

It's often the case that bass lines are written for the session player, just look at Carol Kaye's work with the Beach Boys. This would have been the same for James Jamerson too. Studio time was money so session players would have been given parts and suggestions of what to play.
That said, what a fantastic player Bob Babbitt was, his tone and the what he did with the bass part on this tune is pretty amazing. Stunning bassist.

Very true David, Bob Babbitt was a great bassist and it's about what the player does with the part that is the important thing, not how the part came about in the first place. Who cares about that when they listen to the record!

I totally agree! At the end of the day we have beautiful music to enjoy. There were many times in the studio when a producer said, “can you try this?”. It’s a collaborative, team process.

I always thought that bass lines was Jamerson. What a great line.
