Time to Wake Up 292: The Looming Economic Catastrophe if Climate Change Left Unchecked

  • May 8 | Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) delivers his 292nd speech urging his colleagues to wake up to the threat of climate change.
Whitehouse highlights multiple reports predicting a massive systemic shock to the economy that will be triggered by climate change unless the world undertakes major intervention to lower emissions. Assessments from the Potsdam Institute, The Economist, and Deloitte now predict climate-related damages will reach tens of trillions of dollars by 2050.

I used to look at my son, who is aged 28, and I truly wondered what quality of life he has left ahead of him. Now I'm seeing that the same question should be asked of people of my age group and my husband's too.
All but the very eldest are now going to live long enough to see and experience increasing transformations in the environment around them.
I don't want to have to experience a time when I fear heat strokes, the taps running dry, enforced food rationing at supermarkets, or listening to a storm rip off the roof, or watch the river rise to flood any more of my neighbour's homes (as they have started to do).
I hate to see all these tragic extreme events appearing on news channels, but I hate it even more when the deniers come in and repeatedly insist that 'this happens every year. Nothing to see.'
They stubbornly insist on this unreality because I do believe they are scared, don't want to admit it to themselves, especially don't want to admit it to their children, and so they have enclosed themselves in a personal reality because the pain of climate change hurts too much.
But it's only too clear that we have seen a suddenly elevation in the rate of climate change driven extreme weather events.
We have gone from the occasional drought in the world, the occasional unnaturally high flood - to a point where there are multiple record breaking floods, multiple countries experiencing wildfires, multiple countries experiencing heatstroke level temperatures/wet ulb conditions all at the same time.
There's no break from it now.
The news of one disaster zone is quickly overlaid by a disaster happening elsewhere. But the one that was the headline news yesterday still goes on.
In April of this year alone, there were over 5000 wildfires in India, that's 10 times the number of wildfires in March, and 5 times the number of wildfires in April 2023.
The global temperature has risen by just a mere fraction of a degree over the past 12 months, but it has had a multiple impact on the same region...and we can expect this to affect any other country at any other time.
I used to smile at little children staring curiously at me from their parent's arms. Now I look at them with deep pity and cannot help frown at their parents.
Anyone think the meek will inherit the Earth, think again. It will be the most resilient insects and microbes feasting on our flesh. We've turned what could have been a heaven into hell.

Humans however, will be responsible for our own destruction and for the destruction of many beautiful species.

Of course, it will never *not* be frustrating our leaders aren’t more motivated by the issues that will more actually (and much, much more severely) impact actual human life and our communities-things like food and water scarcity, mass migration, ecological destruction of urban infrastructure, etc.-but I’ll take whatever I can get. Just as long as it gets something done.

Aside from what we're currently doing to try to reduce emissions, we also have to consider some potentially good geoengineering ideas, and implement them as soon as possible! Of course, some people may be reluctant to do so, but we may not have a choice, especially to at least buy more time to reduce emissions.

This is addressed in terms of economic loss, and it is given in trillions. The point was not made, but should have been, that we don't have that kind of money. There's no compensation for losses of anywhere near that magnitude. When areas go underwater, they stay under water; when regions are destroyed economically, they don't recover. So the cost is not $178 trillion because that kind of money does not exist.

If there's not gonna be any political/economic movement to reduce emissions, (I regrettably ask) how can we, who know the future, profit from the enevitabilities of climate change?
If we're going to be spending trillions to repair the damages from natural disasters, who gets paid that money? Contruction and infrastructure companies/contractors?
I'd love to invest into green energy etfs, etc, but there seems to be no legislation to convince me that's an economically wise investment at the moment.

Here's what I don't get: oil executives have kids, right? They've made their money already and would be set for life even if their companies died tomorrow, so why don't they want to keep the world intact to pass all that money on to their kids? Take Darren Woods, CEO of Exxon; he's got a wife and two kids. A quick google tells me that Darren is worth $142 million; maybe he thinks that his millions will be enough to ensure a comfortable life for his kids, but what about his grandkids? He's got to be able to do the math, so what is he thinking?

I can go deeper, but in short, I think you should plan for $10 trillion a year for climate "coping" and "repair" stuff.
I hope to God you guys have told DARPA to get on the solutions to CO2 removal, as well as nitrogen fixing. (Fertilizers are how we feed 3 to 4 billion of the people now alive in the world.)

Climate change is the more than the sum of its extreme weather parts. The landscape of flood risk in America has been transformed. The historical methods are obsolete because their assumptions no longer apply. Maps utilize existing conditions show most of the NE and some of the midwest and parts of N California risk “100” year events every 35 years and in the worst every 8. Our dams, bridges, roads, factories and cities are unfit for purpose, facing a climate they were never designed for. The most urgent task is to put money into local hands so they can finance regional ecological restoration and urban greening in order to evolve for a new climate. Extremity will intensify for the foreseeable future.

The lowest estimates of sea raising in the next 30 years is 29 cm, about a foot. Doesn’t sound much but it won't be evenly spread out because of currents etc so could, for example, mean a meter in New York or one and a half in Florida.
These estimates are likely too low, it could easily be a meter instead.
I wouldn't buy beach front property..
