I once watched an interview of a Didi (Chinese version of Uber) female driver at work. I was so shocked when She picked up a white collar office lady getting off work at 3am in Beijing. I immediately realized it’s so safe there that people take that for granted. What a blessing!
But that can be a minus when they travel to some places overseas, especially the first time. They leave things around and then wonder why they are robbed. They also walk around dangerous parts of town late at night and get mugged. Since they can't speak English very well, they get bullied and robbed again 😂
I miss the convenient life back jn Shenzhen! Easy to move around, come back home at 12 at night no problem. Always something going on! Now stuck in Germany, in a village, nothing to do, nowhere to go , kids can only watch tv in the holidays, so miserable 😰
But this I was told by a young American couple visiting Southeast Asia. I have met a young couple in Thailand recently. They were from US and flow to Singapore and they were traveling from Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand and then to Cambodia and Vietnam and before going back to US. We have happened to have a casual friendly conversation and I have asked them since they are so near to China, why not go to China just for a few days to see China. I told them China is very interesting. But I was surprised of what they told me. They said according to all their media reports in US and advice by their government and many other people. They were advice and told not to travel to China. Even their parents don't allow them to go to China. They were told China is not a safe country to travel. Very dirty, poor rundown infrastructures, poor transportation system, polluted, homeless people are everywhere waiting to rob tourists are common even in broad daylight. Chances of been detained for no reason by the Communist government is very high. Because China is an authoritarian state and all foreign visitors are monitored by thousands of cameras everywhere and every minute where foreign visitors go. Foreign visitors from western countries can be detained for months or even years for no reason. All these is what they know about China. The couple is like below 25 years of age and already so badly brainwashed by their government and controlled media. This is really sad.
"Very dirty, poor rundown infrastructures, poor transportation system, polluted, homeless people are everywhere waiting to rob tourists are common even in broad daylight." This is the true USA.

"No one steals flowers". That says it all. After watching this episode, I suddenly realized that things we are taking for granted in China are really privilege of some other places.
China is not dangerous compared to Western places. A big city in China will be lightyears safer than a big city in the US or Europe for example. It's just a very different culture within Chinese society based on hospitality and respect, whereas in the West, everyone's much for out for themselves with criminals not being penalised.
More charity from citizens in the west. Our 0.1% of scum are worse than China’s. Most in both places are great people. How much of an asshole are you putting down millions of people. That’s not respectful. If we had forced camps and over 5 million slaves like China we would go crazy, unlike the zombie, me, me, me Chinese citizens. How dare you not care about these poor people

Hi Lizzy . Your mother should stay more time . Should visit Chong Qing as most futuristic city , also visit Shanghai , and Shenzhen . But sure she have to go back to SA . Best regards for you and your mother .

In another word, one must be always on guard & be alert on your surroundings wherever you go.
Most Chinese people are peaceful and law-abiding so it's normally safe walking around. But now people from many countries can enter China without a visa. Troublemakers can travel too. Every one should look after themselves and should be cautious when walking around in quiet places late at night. It's like traveling in a plane, people are usually safe, but every now and then there's theft of money and other things in an airport or in a plane.
Hi Lizzy, thx for the positive comments from your mom, but low crime doesn't mean no crime. Pls still be alert for self-safety especially at night even in China
