I think making shinies more common keeps the average player coming back to catch more. But nothing can beat the feeling of getting a full odds shiny out of the blue, or finally encountering that shiny legendary. Seeing hacked shinies so often does make me a bit sad though, it definitely takes away from that special feeling of uniqueness.

i think adding marks is a great way to keep shiny hunting alive for older shiny hunters. not only are you hunting for a shiny but to get a specific mark kinda brings back the feeling of hunting like old days.

My view on how much a Shiny is worth is simply how much I was genuinely expecting the possibility of one in that moment (as long as I found it). I don't Shiny hunt partially for that reason, I let myself stumble upon them. I do sometimes go out of my way to make the odds better (I have a Masuda Ditto) but I never go out looking for them. Still keeps the value to me intact.
Except mass outbreaks in Legends: Arceus. Aside from a Vulpix I got during the Massive Mass Outbreak story, where I thought more about exploring the concept and progressing, I became very desensitized to outbreak Shinies.
So because of all that, I did have a significant reaction to my most recent Shiny, a Magikarp that I accidentally hatched while trying to breed down a bunch of Pokémon contained in each type of Poké Ball for the Pokémon HOME Challenges. I already had one from a previous Max Raid event, and it was bred at the best odds possible, but it was a great experience either way because I wasn't looking for nor genuinely expecting one.
So I like how it is now, people can stumble upon them without looking (so people still get to have the experience), yet people can get them easier if they really want to go for them.

That's the beauty of egg hatching. I remember when I was egg hunting charmander in s/v. It only took me 91 eggs but still felt so worth it. getting the eggs (took hours) and hatching the eggs (took hours) but when I got the shiny charmander, it felt amazing.

I remember going nuts when I found my first shiny in gen 3. Shiny hunting in SV doesnt feel as special but I dont want to spend all my free time looking for a shiny wooper and I like looking at boxes full of shinies.

I love how you perfectly recreated the reaction I just had a few days ago playing through Violet. I think my main thing is that in SV alone, it's become so common, while in older games, they still feel like a surprise (at least to me). This is a great video! Keep it up

For me personally, shinies are just cool extras that make a pokemon more special. I mean, in Scarlet and Violet, when shiny hunting Roaring Moon, I got two shiny Roaring Moon, two shiny Zwelious.. and a shiny Chansey.
For me random shinies have always kinda been "oh, sweet" whether I was hunting or not, but there have been a few exceptions.
I failed a shiny Ditto hunt in US/UM, only to randomly get one in a raid in Sw/Sh. I wanted to eventually get a shiny Esparatha, only to randomly run into a Shiny Flittle one day.
IMO a shiny's value is always a case-by-case basis. I think every gen having a unique method to hunt is great; and there being an actual big shiny hunting community is awesome. I wouldn't have some of the friends I do now if it wasn't for mainstream shiny hunting. Shinies have always been a cool extra to the games, and even if they're more common, I still get really excited after a hunt is successful, no matter if it took 30 seconds or 2 hours.

Saying a shiny Pokémon isn’t as worth another is kind of breaking the whole point of the anime, you don’t just value one Pokémon over another. But then again they aren’t real animals

I think finding a 1/100 Shiny like the three segment Dudunsparce or one child Maushold is the new "bragging rights" shiny. Those are still really hard to find. And finding marked shinies adds more of a challenge too.

This was an interesting watch! I really appreciated that this video felt like a calm conversation. When I first clicked it, a big part of me was bracing for elitism that I had come to expect from the usual discussions on shiny odds in the new games. You keeping it casual while also bringing merit to the improved odds and displaying a live and let live sort of attitude to it was nice :) I was never able to find any shinies as a kid despite my best efforts, my first one was in Moon. I’ve really liked being able to hunt for my own in a way that works for me. It’s like a fun little prize and I have to still put work in completing the dex/gathering materials/saving for better balls etc.
Long comment over! I’ll be subscribing and I look forward to more from you ❤️

In scarlet and violet all pokemon range from different sizes. So I often compensate by searching for a shiny larger than normal. I only searched for the "serious big'ins" variety as I tried the Jumbo mark once and I came out empty handed.

They already did this in sword and shield. Sword and Shield had two different variations of shiny sparkles and one of them was significantly rarer than the other. Of course since shiny sparkles change from game to game it didn't catch on. And honestly I'm glad it didn't because it wasn't really worth seeking out.

    • @Johnny_Bear

I agree. It was quite pointless, especially with the fact that the rarer one was only rare in eggs but common for wild Pokémon.

I blame hackers, honestly the majority of shinies before modern (as in gen 6 onward) were obviously hacked especially if they were competitively viable. So along with methods the make legit competitive viable pokemon being increased, they increased shiny odds so there actually is a chance that Pokemon you see on the other's team being legit.

Minor correction to your progression of shiny finding through the games: Shinies were visible in the overworld in the Let's Go games, also without sound (however, they did sparkle, so it was still more visually obvious than in Scarlet & Violet).

Full-odds shinies feel so much better to get than something like mass-outbreak shinies or sandwich shinies, I don't like to hunt with those methods I usually do Masuda method if am hunting in the more recent games

  • @overtakenbythesea3440
    @overtakenbythesea3440 Год назад +5

Tbh I think a lot of it is also just elitism. There's so much in the pokemon fandom of "Mines rarer then yours" or "my methods better and more valid then yours." Which to be fair is in most fandoms not just pokemon. A lot of people have this inherent want to either have something nobody else has or to be better or have better things then other people.
That being said everybody should get the shinies they want their way! The only real worth any shiny has to someone is the worth that people are giving it. I admit that my raid shinies are a lot less valuable to me then my hunted shinies from any gen. Cause even if it was 1 hour to 12 I put effort into getting them.
That's not always the same as some of my shinies that i spent literal weeks on I have absolutely no value for anymore. I didn't even transfer my hunted shiny haxorus to home despite spending ages hunting for it. (Which was probably dumb anyways since you can get one in bw2) Not that knowing that has ever really contributed to why. It was really significant to me when i caught it but i just don't use it and i have shinies i like a lot more.
Also Shinies despite their older rarity have kind of always been very common online. People don't like to talk about it legit or not. But Gts, trades and online battles have always been super flooded with shinies. (Again a lot of them not legit.) Especially during the gbc gold and silver era and the 3ds era. Since the gbc era had really easy rng manipulation to infinitely produce shinies through ditto.

    • @Johnny_Bear
      @Johnny_Bear  Год назад

Yeah, shinies don’t really have any value by themselves with all the non-legitimate ones floating around so the only real value they can have is with their original trainer

As a shiny hunter/lover myself, I actually do agree with the majority of what has been said. That's why on certain Pokémon games, I sometimes purposely make some of my hunts where I handicap myself, regardless of if I have the shiny charm or not. That's why I sometimes try to do the more "harder" shiny hunts so that way when I get the shiny, it feels more earned compared to "doing the things the easy way". This is not say "anyone is wrong to do shiny hunting on easy mode", but that is just my choice to do. ^^

My most recent Shiny was Shiny Hisuian Zorua in a Lure Ball that I Masuda Bred and Hatched on Mount Glaseado. I ran up and down the slopes for days. Before I started my hunt, I got a Shiny Unovan Zorua with my real goal being a Female Zorua to pass the Lure Ball down.
During my hunt, I encountered 2 Pink Sneasel, one Male, one Female.
The value I put in a Shiny I care about is immeasurable. I hatched 3136 Zorua Eggs in Alpha Sapphire (Can you tell Zorua is my Favourite Pokemon 😅).
Sometimes the nickname I give my mons is a testament to my Journey.
My shiny Klinklang is KL-1059, it being the 1059th Klink egg to come from my hunt
Sometimes it doesn't have to be a rare Shiny to have value to me. I dateskipped in Sword and Shield for about an hour to get me the Raid Den Halloween Event Shiny of Gourgeist whom I named Pumpking.
As long as it's a shiny I care about, it's value is immeasurable. Is it easier to get Shinies in Scarlet/Violet? Yes. But there are shinies I could care less about. My first wild full odds no shiny charm was Clefairy in Alpha Sapphire, and I couldn't care less that it got lost in a Pokemon Moon Cartridge either in my Uni, or on the bus.
    Sorry, this got Rambly...
Anyway, enjoy the Pokémon you like! Whether it's an original colour or an alternate. Make your own stories and experiences. Making it easier to roll dice doesn't change that for me.

As the generations have passed there have been more ways to get a unique/customized mon which is the main appeal of shinies for me. Getting a shiny in a fitting Apricorn/Beast/etc ball and possibly with a title/mark/size are my goals. Shinies from GO are limited to Poke/Great/Ultra/Premier and PLA are all Strange Ball (after transfer) but those fit perfectly for select mons; GO has notifications for XXS/XXL size - recently got XXS shiny Fennekin and Axew from Community Days.
I've shiny hunted off and on since XY due the increased rate/MMing/methods but my first shiny aside from Red Gyarados was a Gastly in Platinum that I found in the Rotom TV room which I do remember more than any others; one of the next ones I got was a Spring Deerling in White.

The value of shiny pokemon is purely subjective. Everyone will view them a little bit different. I always viewed them as a neat thing I would never been lucky enough to find. I'm not counting static shinies like the red gyardados in gen 2. I think shiny hunting used to be insanely tedious and was only for the insane. I love that shinies have become more available so everyone can have at least one. If anything, I value them more now because I don't have to waste hours upon hours trying to get just one. I can get a specific shiny pretty easily instead of thinking, "Ugh. I want it but it's not worth the effort or the tediousness."

  • @darththeo

The only value shiny has is on the person who obtains it. I wouldn't say they have less value personally because that is subjective.

They're virtual animals soooo $5 on ebay or another shiny Pokémon.
They're worth only what they are worth to you. Because they have no real value
Like trying to obtain new skins or costumes in other games.
My Virizion is worth a lot to me. 700 camping + ecounter resets (slightly less annoying than soft reset)
The shinies i earned and wanted for myself are worth a lot to me.

  • @Blackheartzero
    @Blackheartzero 6 месяцев назад

I'm a "personal value" type of Shiny Hunter. In short, if you went through the trouble to hunt a particular Shiny, it has value to you, and that's all that matters.
Is it easier than it used to be? Oh, indeed it is, but not by much! Certain hunting methods like Masuda and SR-ing Legendaries will still take days of your time- Months, even- before you see any results.
If you worked your ass off to get a particular Shiny, it's valid, you earned it, and anyone who says differently are just mad that they have something they don't _exclusively_ own.
Basically, when I hear complaints about Shinies losing value, I can't help but think what these people really want is for Shinies to be more like NFTs. I'd personally rather *_die_* than let that happen, and I'm positive I'm not alone in that sentiment.

It also doesn't help that some of the coolest pokemon in the game series have some of the most dogshit shinies ever such as Gengar, Garchomp, Gholdengo, Regice, Zapdos, Maushold, Flareon, Leafeon, Baxcalibur, etc. Both Armorouge and Ceruledge being the biggest disgraces.
Whereas other pokemon have awesome shinies such as Lunala, Furret, Decidueye, Greninja, and so on.
One could argue that they've been set in stone but I call bullshit since Charizard used to have a Purple shiny with Green inner wings but then was given the makeover of Black with red inner wings so they CAN change them but just don't want to.
