Have you ever had a day where you said to yourself sometihing like, "Today, I'm having the fries?" What was it that made the day so challenging that you felt you had more than earned a special reward?
I've done that part of 191 in the other direction before, which is why I was dying to do it again! That's a great ride! I met some guys at breakfast the next morning on some KTMs and they had done it the day before and said it was fine but really cold. I'm fine with altering my route. Those were new to me. Plus, I can still do 191 next time, perhaps a little later in the season or when I haven't slogged through near gale force winds for half a day. Glad you enjoyed the video. Thanks for watching!
The locals are right about the 191 it closes all the time because ice during the winter, it is a dangerous road when it’s dry ! The worst wind I ever encountered was on I-8 between Alpine and Jamul . It is very Mountainous and when I would hit a canyon the wind would blow me onto the shoulder I found out later the CHP closed the Interstate about 5 minutes after I passed Alpine .
I feel you, man! I live in NM and ride a heavy Road King. It's always windy here, but the fierce winds come in the spring. I've found that speeding up makes for a better ride. But, whatever it takes to make a safe passage. Many times I've told myself, if I make this passage, I'm getting fries and a green chile cheese cheesburger!
I do most of my riding in Colorado and sometimes the wind can get pretty severe. I totally empathize with how much that sucks even when the scenery is spectacular. I enjoyed your video and commentary.
Parts of it are cool, like many states I guess. I didn't ride much in NM on this trip. Other than Gallup, pretty much everything I rode in NM this time was pretty remote. In the past, I really liked Chama up north. There's a narrow gauge (I think it's narrow) train you can ride. I wish I'd known before I planned my trip. Albuquerque was ok, the areas around White Sands were alright. Tucumcari, NM had a really cool motel on Route 66 that I stayed at. Yeah, big wind sucks. Especially for 3 hours! I've ridden in big winds before, but not for such a long time. It was very exhausting and nerve wracking. Past experience paid off and I soldiered through.
Nice scenery, what do you think 191 would have been like? Yep driven in very strong cross winds before it's no fun. Breakfast looked yummy. Look forward to the next episode and RIDE SAFE OUT THERE CURT!
I mentioned this in another comment, but I ran into 2 guys on ktms at breakfast the next morning. Not literally of course. They'd done 191 the day before. They said it was fine but really cold. I've done it before in the other direction which is why I really wanted to do it again. It's a hell of a ride. Probably better going north cuz you're going uphill and it's real twisty But there's always next time. And damn, I may just have to stay at the El Rancho then, too!
Speaking of mens jacket, have one with the buttons on the opposite side. But i bought the jacket in the mens section and it said for men,i think i know why,but cant say it on RUclips
"Old Guy" long distance rider here - In my personal experience, the very WORST thing to do in a strong (or gusty) side wind.. is to "slow down" ! It only make the problem(s) WORSE. Maintaining a good clip will shift the (apparent) wind vector more towards the FRONT of your bike, and increase the stabilizing gyro-effect of the front and rear wheels ! Most 'bikes will "heel into" the wind like a well-trimmed sailboat, no need to "fight" the wind with excessive handlebar input..
You don't want to go too slow, but you don't want to go too fast, either. 60 was my sweet spot given the strong gusts from the side. I just settled and rode the storm out. And yeah, I soooo wanted to use the REO song on that video. Love the intro.

191 from Alpine to Morinci is fantastic, you made the right choice to save for another time. 180 and 78 are a fine alternative. Nice episode.

If I'd have been on my Road King, it would have been easier to handle due to it's extra weight and very low center of gravity, that's for sure.

There's some great riding in Colorado for sure. I've been fortunate enough to have ridden there twice and I'll definitely be back.
Riding in high wind is not fun at all. I feel your pain. I haven't spent much time in New Mexico. Looks like another great destination. Thanks!

@Ride_0n if I were in the vicinity of the Elrancho that would make a nice hideout.

It seems to be a European thing. 🤷🏻♂️
@@Ride_0n I figured out why the buttons are on the opposite side
