"Crossroads" was one of the last, if not THE last map I ever made before the final boss level, and I think it really shows. I finally nailed Sandy's style and design language, I feel. The only part I don't really care for is the level structure, which feels a bit too small and linear for his work. I guess it works for a "Bloodfalls" replacement, but I wouldn't submit this for a "Make a Sandy Petersen-styled map"-contest. Maybe it'd have fit better as a "Nirvana"-type map.
"The Great Pyramids" is indeed a Serious Sam reference. The part at the beginning is a callback to the first game, where you can run back at the start to a lone palm tree to get a rocket launcher, which spawns some enemies that are pretty much Arachnotrons. The part with the Pinkies after this, where the wall lowers to release yet more Pinkies, is also a reference to the first encounter (heh) with the Headless Kamikaze. And of course, there's barely any roaming monsters and most battles are initiated by teleporting enemies in.
I had this cool idea of making a giant pyramid out of this skin-wall-texture, and using that as the big center piece. For the longest time, I couldn't figure out how to really connect it to the rest of the map, and I still don't think I nailed out. I personally think this is the weakest map in the entire WAD. The fights are cool, but that's it.
Funny you mention your Indiana Jones map, by the way. I originally wanted to put a reference to it in here, but again, I couldn't really figure out how to make it work. It's there in spirit, I suppose.
Oh, and I also wanted to put in another Talos Principle puzzle, because Egypt, but eh. Couldn't be bothered. Go play the Talos Principle.
24:50 I AM YELLING AT THE SCREEN HOW DID YOU NOT REALIZE HOW COOL THAT EFFECT WAS, IN VANILLA DOOM NO LESS??? I DEMAND YOU GO BACK TO IT AT THE BEGINNING OF THE NEXT VIDEO!!! I SPENT SO LONG ON THAT!!!!!!
That said, I think "Endless Library" is the one whose visuals I'm most proud of. I think it really nails that Sandy Petersen look perfectly, while also looking great in general. It even plays really well. I think if I added a few more details here and there and spruced up some of the textures, it could fit into just about any WAD. Personally very proud of how the lite-amp is actually useful here, too.
The theme for the level is that this is where hell keeps all of its infernal literature. It also serves as a sort-of museum, where they keep some of their "war trophies" (i.e. the human corpses), as well as how hell appeared throughout the games (green marble, bloody wood, etc).
Those two missing secrets are timed, by the way. In "Monster Condo", there's one infamous secret you have to get within 30 seconds of the map starting, and the same is the case here.
Also, that midi for the map is the second one I feel fits better than the original. So much more foreboding.
Also, small bit of trivia: each time you see that grotesque with the red eyes, it works against you. There's a Sandy Petersen video in which he showed off the actual house that "Suburbs" is based on, and he explained that the red eyes in the wall you gotta shoot were a reference to his wife. Ever since then, I call that face "Sandy's wife". So in a map set all about Sandy, of course his wife is there too.
Mod feedback: what if the rocket launcher had a primary fire that's basically the regular rocket launcher, and an alt fire with homing missiles that do more damage but require reloading? You could even nerf the primary fire by making the explosions much smaller, à la the Direct Hit from TF2.

I've actually never played the first Serious Sam, but although I didn't get the specific reference, the gameplay style is instantly recognizable.
I ran through the opening of the library a little fast and missed the cool impossible hallway, but I did notice it much later when hunting for secrets! It got lost in editing, but trust that I did indeed appreciate it! I've never heard that story about Sandy's wife before, I'm definitely going to think about that any time I see those red eyes from now on haha.
The rocket launcher did eventually get a standard non-homing rocket secondary fire. It was necessary for the Icon of Sin fight!

@@ShallowVA Oh, you can defeat the Icon of Sin with just about any projectile weapon. I prefer using the BFG, since it just requires one shot.
Would still love to see your reaction to the impossible hallway though. I was already afraid it was gonna fly under a lot of people's radars, since it's an optional secret.
