      @@ukaszwalczak1154, more like Lusitania and Mauretania. Pilsudski and Lusitania were the victims of wars. Not Titanic. You could mention Britannic instead that drove on a mine on Aegean Sea, on 21 November 1916.

      @@ukaszwalczak1154, rather not. Pilsudski sailed into two mines. It is now considered as the most likely cause of her sinking. Yes, initially torpedoes were taken under consideration. Germans however, having always precise specifications of all losses inflicted to the enemy, do not take into account the deliberate sinking of Pilsudski. So rather mines. Anyway, it was our biggest loss, right after ORP Wicher and ORP Gryff, excluding ORP Orzel. Nobody so far had been able to figure out how Orzel vanished. One of Pilsudski’s crew survivors used to live in our apartment building in Gdynia. He continued working for the same company, which owned Pilsudski and Batory. However, the fate was not gracious to him because the guy died accidentally on the sea near Gibraltar Strait in 1960. Probably suicide… This is what most our neighbors were saying.

    Fun fact, I was supposed to sail on the Costa Concordia, but my mother broke her leg that week, delaying our trip. She actually sailed on the Italian Line twice as a child, but on the Andrea Doris's sister ship. So she lucked out twice.

    The captain of the Andrea Doria provided a great example as not only was he the last person off of the ship, he had to be coaxed, unlike the Costa Concordia, where the captain was the first one off of the ship and had to be ordered to go back on the ship. This was also a big event for the early days of television, as it was the first type of it's disaster to be televised.

    An older friend of mine told me about sailing aboard the Dutch liner Maasdam and seeing another ship ahead of them and thinking how those people must be having more fun. The date was July 24, 1956, and the ship ahead was the Andrea Doria that in around 24 hours would be at the bottom of the ocean.
    The Ile de France was not only a rescue ship for those on the Andrea Doria, but three years later would be used for and partially sunk for the movie "The Last Voyage", having been rented from a scrapping firm before the Ile was broken up. "The Last Voyage" is largely based on a real couple named Peterson who were aboard the Andrea Doria. Mrs. Peterson was trapped in the wreckage and her husband and a crew member tried to free her. Sadly Mrs. Peterson went into shock and died. In the movie, Dorothy Malone played a woman trapped in the wreckage after a boiler explodes while Robert Stack (husband) and Woody Strode (crew member) try to free her. What a mix of real-life and fiction!
    I've read or heard that there was such an effort to get the Italian shipping business going again after World War II that some of the people involved in building the Andrea Doria worked on a volunteer basis.
    I've also heard there was something a little...off...about the Andrea Doria. I was told that although the liner was the flagship, and one would think working aboard her an honor, that people Italian Line staff didn't like working on the Andrea Doria.

    Compared to other famous ship wrecks in popular history, the Italians built something that was able to be relatively safely evacuated. If it weren't Italian, it probably would have made it to port.

    In July 1956, actress Ruth Roman was just finishing a trip to Europe with her son Richard nicknamed Dickie, who was three years old at the time as well as a traveling companion, Janet Stewart, and her son’s nanny. At the port of Cannes, all four boarded the Italian passenger liner SS Andrea Doria as First Class passengers for their return trip home to the United States. Another Hollywood actress also onboard that fateful voyage was Betsy Drake who joined the voyage at Gibraltar, where she left her husband Cary Grant filming The Pride And The Passion (1957, United Artists) on location in Spain.
    On the night of July 26, 1956, many passengers would cut their evening short to get some sleep before the early morning docking in New York City. Betsy Drake turned in early too, never being much for socializing, she preferred to climb into her bunk in her cabin to read.
    Ruth Roman and traveling companion Janet Stewart enjoyed a last drink in the Belvedere Observation Lounge, her son slept in the cabin a deck lower with his nanny minding him. At 11:10 PM that night the MS Stockholm leaving New York for Sweden, accidentally rammed the Andrea Doria. To some passengers it seemed like a dull thud, to others a great jolt, depending on where they were on ship, and then the screeching sound of ripping metal was heard. Betsy Drake’s cabin located on the Boat Deck shook violently which woke her up and she immediately put her stylish traveling suit that she'd been wearing earlier back on, grabbed a life vest, and headed for her lifeboat station on the upper deck. Her jewels, and a semi-autobiographic novel on which she’d been working, went down with the ship.
    Right after the collision happened Ruth Roman immediately took off her high heel shoes and scrambled back to her cabin barefoot to retrieve her sleeping son. Roman had to rip her form-fitting gown up the back so she could move faster on the stairs that were already tilting at a treacherous angle due to the listing of the ship on its side. She took son, his nanny, meeting up with Janet Stewart at their lifeboat station. Roman had found a deflated balloon left over from a party blew it up to amuse and distract her son telling him that they were going on a picnic. At around 2 AM, Roman, her son and the two other woman slid down from the higher end of the deck to the lower side where they hoped to catch a rope to a lifeboat below. A young cadet sailor from the SS Andrea Doria took her son and strapped to Dickie to himself and climbed down a rope ladder to a waiting lifeboat. Then all of a sudden the lifeboat pulled away before Ruth Roman could climb aboard. The boy disappeared in the fog with a group of strangers. She, the nanny, and the traveling companion, waited for another lifeboat to escape. All three women were taken in a lifeboat to the famous French liner the Ile de France but her son was not there and she could not find out to which ship among the seven rescue ships he had been taken. Betsy Drake was also taken to the Ile de France, since so many survivors were trying to send cablegrams from the ship to loved ones, that she was unable to send one to Cary Grant.
    Many passengers onboard the Ile de France donated clothing to the Doria's rescued passengers which included tennis player named Eddie Hand who gave Ruth Roman a pair of trousers, a white polo shirt, and woolen socks. A Life magazine photographer who happened to be traveling with his family, brought her to his cabin to rest.
    Just a little after 5 PM on the 26th, the Ile de France docked at Pier 88 off West 48th Street. Betsy Drake was met at the pier by a friend, still wearing her traveling suit but also a pair of white sweat socks a sailor had given her. Ruth Roman finally learned that her son had been taken to the MS Stockholm, which initially had trouble leaving the scene of the collision because her anchor chains had become entangled. She was still at sea when Ruth Roman arrived at the pier with the other Ile de France passengers.
    Late the next morning, on July 27th, Ruth Roman was finally reunited with her son she than picked up her son and hustled him through a mob of reporters and cameramen. For both Hollywood actresses, their connection to the sinking of the SS Andrea Doria would become a footnote in their lives, though Betsy Drake was reportedly traumatized by the incident for months. She ultimately left acting, and divorcing husband Cary Grant, for a career in psychotherapy, particularly in the treatment of children and adolescents. Betsy Drake died on October 27, 2015 at the age of 92, in London, United Kingdom. While Ruth Roman continued her career successfully until she passed away on September 9, 1999 a the age of 76, in Laguna Beach, California.

    1. "Mechanical problems" probably just referring to the slight vibration at the stern, thus the change of the propellers. Also no serious stability problems, the ship had been checked in all possible ways, and the Colombo too after the disaster. No stability modifications required for her. Also in general, the Da Vinci wasn't even part of the Doria-Class. It was extremely different, especially in size, shape and propulsion. Her being unstable isn't due to the faulty design of Doria, but rather the rush with which she was modified and built at Ansaldo
    2. Rather unlikely that the NYT journalist got bribed, or else in the title of the article he would have exaggerated the displacement to the nearly 30 000t, rather than downsizing it to 25 000t. In most promotional material of the Italian Line, such as posters and postcards, the displacement is almost accurately stated as circa 29 000t or 30 000t
    Other than that, your video, I'm lovin' it. For some fun, why not do French ship Flandre next time? Those were some proper mechanical problems ;)

      Almost forgot:
      3. The Andrea Doria wasn't the first Italian post-war liner, not at all. After the war, the Italian Line put back into service the two-funnelled San Giorgio and the one-funnelled Santa Cruz. After that they also refitted the old Conte Biancamano, Conte Grande, Vulcania and Saturnia. The Navigatori-Class was also completely rebuilt (Vespucci, Polo, Caboto, Vivaldi, Usodimare, Toscanelli) and the first proper liners were the Augustus and the Cesare, on the South American route. The Doria-Class were the first purpose built for the New York route, and the first ones to actually be somewhat internationally competitive

    I genuinely apriciate the video...except for two little things...first Rex was indeed a triumph but it's maiden voiage was not so smooth and second ... some time ago i watched a documentary about the Doria and it was not his fault to be in the wrong places...but stockolm s'fault to proceed thru fog without using her horn and having her radar set wrong...Italian officer giannini had to manually trace the stockholm and when he was on the bridge he noticed stockolm was turning in their way...

    Here's one way to get on lifeboats while the ship is listing.
    One, pay attention. If the ship is listing to port, go to port as because starboard lifeboats will inevitably be unable to be launched.
    Two, always remain close to the boat decks....
    Three, you didn't do any of these. So good luck

The Andrea Doria's tale suggests not trusting Italians with navigation and steering. Or maybe watchstanding. Or maybe not trusting Swedes when it's foggy out. Hmmm.....

      If you do not trust Italian engineering then do not think about purchasing Ferrari. Andrea Doria was afloat more than 10 hours despite such devastating blow. She was very safe... I am not Italian, but I love their ships.

    Only a few minutes late despite being a roller and Italy being so much farther away from the States than the rest of Europe? Ok: I must admit that's impressive. :)
    All I really need to say about the Doria sinking - maybe out of spite for the Stockholm being in the *WRONG ####### LANE* - is that, if this were the Titan put in her situation (Morgan Robertson's ship, not the Titanic), this is one scenario where I could understand her probably turning her bow towards the Swede and cheese knifing her way through. Stay in your lane idiots. XD

    There is something about Scandanavians (most likely their Viking blood) that causes their ships to ram everyone else. Empress of Ireland was also struck by a Norwegian ship (the coaler Storstad) and sank in less than 15 minutes, taking most of her passengers and crew with her.

      That is your personal opinion of which is also factually wrong, Italian ships are by definition "females" regardless of the name's supposed gender. The SS Rex is one example.

    Titanic would never go under the Brooklyn bridge, in addition to probably not fitting under there is no pier large enough on either side of the east river to hold her.

      Not getting scrapped, so the owners say. The owners restored the Funchal, so restoring Astoria shouldn't be a problem.
