3:27 English Katt: "I could kiss you for that!"
Japanese Katt: "I'll give you face lickies later" AM I UNDERSTANDING THIS CORRECTLY?? Is it because she's a cat? LMAOOO
You’re right on the money haha
Heck yeah, I'll have some face lickies.
I hope fox tasted good
Correct.
Japanese james is much more ghostly while English james felt like a guardian angel
Having played in Japanese, what surprises me the most about the English version is their (mostly) faithful translations. They didn’t completely alter lines for the hell of it like other localizations from that era
Mostly to mean:
EN: You'll never defeat Androssss-
JP: Oh. So that's why I lost... (previous generation team was also Star Fox)
I loved both. They are different in timbre, intonation and some of their mannerisms (for example, in the JP dub, Katt sounds more "sensual", ROB64 and the "Secret Weapon" sound like your typical androids from the animes of the time, and Andross sounds a lot more menacing with his much deeper, almost robotic voice), but they still manage to fit the characters somehow. If anything, JP original sounds a lot more serious and emotional, they were probably trying to make it more immersive by making it feel like an anime shonen or a mecha sort of anime, it gives me very Gundam vibes.
Rob64 sounds like one of those robot companions you see in _Super Sentai._
So for Japanese Star Wolf we went to
Wolf: sounding grumpy
Leon: being chill and cool
Pigma: Mr. Satan
Leon sounds like a budding psychopath; Andrew sounds like a seasoned one.
4:28 was not expecting pigma to talk like that but I prefer it, definitely highlights the fact that he’s a veteran
Star Wolfs voice in Japanese has strength man
Star Wolf in Japanese
4:22 ウルフ
4:25 レオン
4:28 ピグマ
4:32 アンドリュー
Why does pigma sound like shigechi from jojos
Wolf: I won't let you do that, Star Fox!
Leon: His highness Andross ordered you boys shot down.
Pigma: Them bounties on yer heads gon be ours!
Andrew: His highness Andross' enemy is my enemy! Prepare yourself!
I didn’t expect a part 2, this is nice!
The JP version obviously has better acting (although, not as 'better' as I think some people act, English VAs do very well as well), but I mean that's to be expected since they literally have dedicated schools for voice acting in Japan. No such luxury for English VAs.
I think I like the English voices better overall though. Japanese has betting voice ACTING but not necessarily voices. The English version everyone has some sort of quirk that makes them feel like they're from different walks of life--Fox is nasally, Falco is rude and from the Bronx, Peppy has a southern drawl. They all feel like their own people, not just characters. The JP version, on the other hand, I feel like I've heard Fox and Peppy's "characters" all over the place in anime--they just sound less distinct, they sound like anime character archetypes.
As an example: in ENG, when Wolf shows up, he sounds taunting and cheeky, like he knows he's a burden to Fox and it amuses him that they cross paths so much. Fox in turn speaks with a tone of, "Oh great, THESE guys again", noticeably sarcastic and just about having had enough of this BS.
In JP, on the other hand, Wolf sounds angry and aggressive, like he's ready to kill his rival once and for all. Fox then in turn sounds surprised ("Nani?!") and distraught that they've run into them.
The latter feels like a scripted encounter between generic hero character and villain of the week, the former feels like a natural moment between two people with a history together. The Japanese delivery feels more dramatic because of being taken so seriously, but the former makes the characters feel more alive and not just like archetypes.
tl;dr acting ability =/= better overall; more serious =/= better overall. It's not just 'nostalgia', there are very legitimate reasons to prefer the English version. It really is just personal preference
I mean, MOST of the best English voice actors are just professionally trained theatre actors. So it's not quite the same as a dedicated VA school, but it's hardly far off the mark.
@@lipnoodle117 Good point actually!
I like the JP better, but you make a very good point: archetypes(JP) vs personality(EN).
Oh who do I kid, I love both versions! XD
I honestly will not play SF643D unless it is in Japanese: the voice acting seems forced in the USA, (3D) the JPN version holds the same feeling!
Don't forget this was 1996. Voice acting in video games was extremely new and English voice acting for anything that wasn't domestically produced animation was highly likely to be terrible. In very rare instances it was passable, but that was about as good as it got. Compare the first Resident Evil to this and you'll know what I'm talking about. The fact that the English dub here is of actual quality (with some expected cringe,) was almost unheard of during that time: English voices that didn't completely suck and didn't distract from the game itself.
I like that in English it's just like, "Star Wolf, another Tuesday," and in Japanese Fox actually seems kind of scared to have Star Wolf show up.
More like scared he is pissed since the situation was already difficult to handle. He says "Star Wolf?! Just in a moment like this..."
English: Cartoon Story.
Japanese: Anime.
0:46 Huh. It actually sounds a bit less intense in this recording as opposed to your other video.
I think the more compressed sound quality in Part 1 caused the scream to peak, making it sound more intense.
Pigma has been speaking in Kansai dialect
3:55 Lol at the one enemy in the back that crashes himself into a mountain.
That was interesting. Star Fox's Japanese VA makes me feel like I'm watching a show on Toonami back in 1999 or some old tokusatsu/sentai show. Rob's voice is too high, though. With that said, why did you leave out Slippy? :(
I just noticed Andross is named Andolph in Japanese. I guess they thought it was a little too on the nose for the English release.
yeah originally, Andross' name was Andorf (Translated to Andolf) but Nintendo America changed it.
@@supersasukemaniac
If they accidentally leave out the letter 'n', the atmosphere becomes...weird.
lame uncreative villain
I doubt it had anything to do with Hitler. Andross just sounds more cool and villainous
4:22 Wolf sounded like he said "Verga" and if you know, you know.
*laughs in spanish* no seriously i didn't realize The first time 😂

Nani?
2:03 Is it just me or is the robot voice kinda cute sounding? I mean...I'd be pretty intimidated by the giant robot alongside a maniacal sounding voice like this, but if the voice is heard alone, it does sound weirdly adorable
It was recently created, or "born", so I guess they wanted to emphasize how fresh out of the factory it was by having it sound and behave like a child.
I wouldn't be surprised if the line "where is the creator?" was originally "where is my daddy?"
@@SorcererLance That’s certainly a cool way to interpret it
@@CLTurtleand makes it a teensy bit sad knowing you had to destroy it as it never had a chance to know who built him and why... While sounding like a lost, confused and possibly scared child
Can we talk about Pigma’s absolute yakuza voice?
the only pig who speaks Kansai dialect in SF
Spyborg is fucking terrifying in Japanese.
I like JP Fox's reaction to Star Wolf showing up. In English he responds as if they're just a nuisance, which while amusing does somewhat undercut the threat they're supposed to present, especially since both encounters (Fichina and Bolse, his dialogue is different for the Venom fight) sees their arrival complicate an already difficult situation (handling the bomb and taking out Bolse's core). Meanwhile in Japanese he comes off as genuinely alarmed at their sudden presence ("What? Star Wolf?!") which does a better job at selling them as serious opponents.
BRUH a ship just crashes at 3:55 thats Hilarious XD
Holy shit he did a part 2
3:36 Oh! Would you now, Katt? Like, I know she's a cat, but damn! lmao
Anyway, same as part 1, the English version is not bad at all, but some characters feel more sarcastic in English. It's odd, because they basically say the same lines, but the way it's delivered makes them sound different.
Special highlight goes to Bill here. In English he has this air of "I got this, I deal with grunts like these daily". But in the original he sounds extra focused on not messing up. Which gives a contrast between him and the Star Fox team, feeling like a rookie trying to live up to others' expectations vs seasonal veterans. They don't feel like they have the same wave lenght as in the English version, and I don't think they should, given how much less useful Bill is compared to other allies.
Glad you included the "Can't let you do that, Star Fox." part. That line is such a meme in the internet. Lol
P.s. In the Japanese version of this line, wolf just say that he's going to defeat Fox.
Disappointing but predictable...
we need subtitles for the japanese version.
i'm told a LOT was changed in the translation.
Interesting, someone else who originally played in Japanese commented that the translations were surprisingly faithful, especially considering that this was from the 90s.
@@PhirePhlame some of the lines used have different meanings from what i gather.
like how leon sounds way more like a psychopath
An interesting tidbit is in the English version, Bill has a Husky and Bulldog Unit... At 1:47, he's got a (Saint) Bernard Unit.
I'm gonna guess they changed the dog breeds because "Bernard" is an actual name and could be confused for an unseen character rather than a dog breed reference.
3:48 ICONIC. Wolf, Leon, and Pigma's voices are all so good..
JP sounds more serious and dramatic but I like the goofy and cartoony nature of English, I don't want these Star Fox games to come with too much seriousness
1:54 They really screwed this one up though. English makes me sleep
I don't like JP Katt
It would be perfect for me if all the robots spoke japanese and everyone else spoke english. I really dislike the monotone robot. It's usually fine but once you hear a more expresive robot you just don't want the monotone one, especially when their behavior is not that monotone.
I am glad to recognize this because I was starting to think I had been getting more biased towards jp voicelines in videogames.
Would make Fox's "What's he saying?" line make more sence
Andross Mishima
4:21
"I won't let you (do that)! Star Fox!"
"Master Andross wants us to take you down"
"The bounty on yer heads are ours"
"Master Andross' enemies are my enemies! Brace yourselves!"
2:32 This intro is better than in the international version! 😹😹😹😹😹 (Good god, Fox. I can’t imagine James’ face right now!)
wolf is one of the only VA i prefer in japanese, that voice is great
Japanese Kat being like: "Ara-Ara".
Oh wow, Japanese Leon hits different too. He's not an overly posh git like in 64 or Zero and he's not some raspy weirdo like in Assault. he almost sounds like your ordinary guy who could still cut your throat then immediately go back to his lunch.
Also I fuckin still miss Daisuke Gouri (Japanese Andross/Pigma)
Also can we talk about the clear voice on pepper
Pigma sounds like a moron in English, but he sounds legitimately threatening in Japanese.
He's supposed to be effeminate yet predatory.
Katt sounds like h3nta1 voice 😂😂😂
Falco: Um…. I need an adult.
(DBZ Abridged reference)
@@joshuatimbol696 Katt: "I am an adult."
wow a part 2, and i just finished watching the first one. LETS GOOOOOO
Edit: Just finished and subbed, gimme dat part 3 bro
Hehe maybe we’ll see!
-The Sector X boss sounds like she has the same voice filter on her that Delfine had in Outlaw Star whenever she was in the tube thingie in The Outlaw Star itself
-Katt sounds sultry in both languages, love it.
-Bill def sounds much more like a straight-laced military pilot in the Japanese version but I'd be lying if I said I didn't get a kick out of Bill's surfer boy accent every time I heard it.
- James McCloud's Japanese VA put in the performance of a lifetime, my God.
-General Pepper's VA also puts in a great, straight-laced performance, but I like the English VA's "Fatherly General Patton" take on it too.
-The only one I didn't outright like was Japanese Star Wolf. Maybe it's because I was super drawn to those characters as a wee lad, but I think their English VAs give them unforgettable personalities, where I feel like you could hear the Japanese voices in just about any gang of hoodlums from any anime ever.
0:22 eyyyyyy I'm in the video!

Everyone is so extra in the Japanese version, it's a bit grating to have everyone at max volume at all times.
Impression I get off of every Star Wolf member based on their voices
English
- Wolf - James Bond Villain
- Leon - Maniacal Individual
- Pigma - Cartoon Goofball
- Andrew - Whiny Kid
Japanese
- Wolf - Dangerous Fighter
- Leon - Intelligent Person
- Pigma - Big Bruiser
- Andrew - That weird kid in class
I dunno... Leon sounds a bit more of a typical Bond villain
Now if you were talking about his voice in Assault, then absolutely he's a lunatic :P
@@SorcererLance Perhaps "maniacal" might be a strange way to put it, but definitely someone who's rather sadistic (with his slow speech, less aggressive tone, and all in the context of someone who's out for blood), but I'm not sure if his personality is clouding my view. That said, I will concur that it does sound a bit like James Bond villains
Slippy should be in part 3
I need a Rom with englisch text and japanese voice...
I would pay good money for a cartridge that can switch voice languages between English and Japanese and both subs that works on a real n64
I've seen pics of the Star Fox Anime and it looks as much as faithful to the original source. If only there was maybe one that acts as an adaptation of the first and second star fox game, the first shows Fox and his motley crew seeking out to fight Andross, with the eventual timeskip to the second game where now things are more dire with the Venomian army preparing to lay siege to Corneria and along with that, is the first debut of Star Wolf, where in 64 it's technically the second time both Star Fox and Star Wolf clashed through out the events of 64.
Bill and Fox almost have these old allies but equals feel to them in the dub, something like Goku and Piccolo, while the original Japanese makes Bill sound like he looks up to Fox like Krillin and Goku
Japanese Bill's voice is Shinpachi of Gintama
NO WAY WHAT. I HAD NO IDEA I LOVE GINTAMA
@@zattoguy He was rookie voice actor, so almost people do not notice the fact. lol
Japanese Bill also voiced Japanese ROB (or NUS as he is called in that version).
1:57 I would have liked to see the difference when the secret weapon robot asks "WHERE IS THE CREATOR". In English, Fox responds like he was deaf when, based on context, he should instead of sounded confused.
I remember pigma saying to fox in one of the fights (the second one, i think)
Pigma: your father is waiting for you in hell...
Nintendo game btw XD
you forgot to add Pigma's Peppy line in the JP one. That footage had Peppy down for that mission.
dude starfox in japanese sounds like gundam! also, I aways tought andrew was a sheep when I was a child! lol! how I have star fox, the other games have japanese dub either? like adventures assault and zero?
Japanese Leon sounds like a Yaoi character. And Andross is expected to be feared, considering he was once the King of the Iron Fist Tournament as well as a Shichibukai before that was dissolved.
(JP Andross was voiced by Daisuke Gori, aka the original voices of Heihachi Mishima and Jinbei)
RIP
What's funny is that Bill's/Andrew's VA actually voiced in Yaoi. Shinobu Satouchi seems to have not since he isn't prolific.
4:38 I think Fox said "NANI!" there.
Indeed.
"What?! Star Wolf?!"
Still no Slippy? Also for English Katt sounds like the same voice as Slippy.
Also I never owned the game, but played it a fair bit at a relative's house and friend's house and watched a friend and their brother play it quite a lot and I don't ever recall Katt existing. I guess it's due to being a later level and I guess a path that I wouldn't/couldn't take much.
She first shows up in Zoness, a hard path exclusive level.
Katt and Slippy share the same voice actress. Ironically enough, she also voiced Spyborg.
Fun fact: in the 3DS version, Falco/Wolf's Japanese seiyuu also voices Scarecrow from the Batman Arkham games.
Japanese versions straight up anime.
Gee, thanks
Part 3 with the rest of the bosses? I wanted to hear the captain in japanese
In JP.ver...
1. Fox = Leon = Zoness's Boss = Caiman(Area 6)
2. Falco = Wolf = Caiman's Boss(Area 6)
3. Slippy = Katt = Sector X's Boss
4. Peppy = James = Sector Y's Boss
5. Bill = Rob = Andrew
6. Pepper = Andoss = Pigma = Macbeth's Boss

Maybe you should follow this up with the later games
Star fox adventures didn’t do any Japanese VA due to time constraints and Rareware being bought out by Microsoft by the time development was wrapping up. That’s just my guess lol
For the later games that did do both Japanese and English voice acting, they all sound pretty consistent and its not really all that interesting to compare.
One interesting thing I want to point out in the Japanese version of Star Fox Assault is that the mission briefing cutscenes have more detailed animations. Specifically characters blink whereas the English versions don’t. No idea why it’s like that.
@@zattoguy Fron what I read they don't blink because they didn't bother to redo the lip syncing for the English localization.
Nah the English VA is still GOAT

I still don't quite like that the Japanese voices kinda always sound too similar. I don't know if there aren't many accents in Japan or if they just like their archetypes, but there comes a point where certain types of characters just sound the same. Like Pigma having the typical Japanese goon accent, or the robots having childish voices.
Instead, in the English dub you can tell characters come from different places, or have a greater variety of characters. And I noticed that in this game since I was a kid, even when my first language is Spanish and I didn't understand a damn thing about the game xd
gosh, Andrew sounds just as dopey in japanese as he does in English. Interesting that his english name is a direct translation from what it is in Japanese; I wonder why?... like, in the context of the Star Fox universe, Andrew (Oikonny) is a really boring common first name that bears no resemblance to his animal type like Falco, Pigma, etc., but by that being his name he fits the dopey "uncle's nephew trying to show off" trope... just wonder if there's Japanese influence or culture reference that is lost as to the specific choosing of the name (I care too much about this because I've always had a grudge against him sharing my first name but seeming so stupid, lol)
I thought it was obvious to show familiar ties since Andrew's name resembles Andross' name... At least the first four letters
