    If your car is running roughly, the engine speed is 'hunting', the car won't start, won't reach high revs, lacks power or cuts out whilst driving, check to see if you have a faulty crankshaft sensor (error code P0335) or camshaft sensor (error code P0340).
    If you want to buy an OBD II code reader (AKA Code Scanner or Diagnostic Scan Tool), so that you can read AND clear codes on your car, you can buy a fantastic model at a great price here: amzn.to/2weAD3w
    Once you buy the parts you can do this job yourself in a couple of hours. Keep total control over your vehicle by fixing it at home on your terms.

    Thanks heaps for this video, bought an Astra for my son today. Day 1 of ownership the car stalled out on 3 times and the check engine lamp came on. Ran a scanner over it and got code p0335. Searching lead me to your video and it seems we will need to replace this sensor. Awesome work, appreciated the close ups and detailed info. You’re a good man! Thanks again!

    Hi Chris, I had my 06 1.7 cdti diagnostic checked at a local garage because it had a starting problem and also cut out mid drive once or twice!!
    The garage said it was a crank sensor fault (the only fault code) and this would explain the problem I was having. I was booked in the next day with a quote of £105 and 1 hour for the work, luckily your video popped up on my recommended vids and after checking the price of the part £36.99
    I give it a go. The job was as easy as your vid and the car is now fine and saved me the best part of £70!
    Thank you keep up the good work!

    Well done, this helped me (so far) to identify one particular problem. My Astra H CDTI (2004) would sometimes start and at other times just turn over, but not start. A garage I tried replaced the Camshaft Position Sensor (P0340) and I thought it was fixed. But a day later, the fault returned and I was stranded. Two hours later, it just started. So I followed your instructions, and this revealed two error codes: 033529 (Crankshaft Position Sensor) and 213971 (CAN-Bus No Communication with CIM (Steering Column Module). Not sure what the last one really means, but when I was stranded, a guy stopped and said that I should try to lock /unlock the car because the key might not be recognised as the right one! I wondered if this meant anything? I have a second key but I left that with the car at the garage (not a Vauxhall dealer). I think the garage replaced the wrong sensor. Appreciate your valued thoughts on this.

    I just did this on my Honda Civic 1.7CDTi. Thanks a bunch! saved £220. In the Civic the connector bracket is fouled by something else so you can't slide the connector plug off the bracket which is a really daft design by Honda, fortunately the ECU side connector can be clipped off like you've shown. I fitted the new sensor and cabled tied it to something else so it stays put. I just snipped the old sensor's cable off using a wire cutter right up to the connector so I've just left it on the bracket.

      Hi John, your best bet is to buy one of the cheap OBD code readers / reset tools (You can get them for 20 - 30 USD). Then you can read and reset your codes. If the only problem on the car was the crankshaft sensor, and you have replaced it with a good one (OEM Crankshaft sensors are recommended as replacements as the tolerances will be correct) than you will hopefully find that the performance will improve over time as the ECM adjusts to the new sensor data. Getting hold of an OBD read / reset tool is very handy for future use also so is a wise investment. Good luckand let us know how you get on. Cheers, Chris

    • @christopher_barr
      @christopher_barr  8 лет назад

      Hi John, once a sensor has been changed it takes the ECM a while to adjust and remap all its settings. You have a couple of options.
      1. Disconnect the battery for around 10 minutes and then reconnect it. This will reset the ECM and kick-start the remapping process.
      2. Continue to drive the car and eventually (provided there are no other issues) the performance should improve.
      The above will work if there are no other issues with the car.
      Good luck, and let us know how you get on.
      Cheers,
      Chris

      @christopher_barr  8 лет назад

      No worries John. Leave the battery off a good 10 minutes and then try running the car again. After you have run it a while you can do a pedal test to see what fault codes you have. I show you how to do the pedal test in this other video of mine:
      ruclips.net/video/MqUMXeqO9Hg/видео.html
      If you come back with some fault codes I'll see if I can be of any further help.

    • @christopher_barr
      @christopher_barr  6 лет назад +1

      Sorry to hear that. I'm guessing you didn't get on the bolt properly (you need the correct length extension like in the video, otherwise you'll be on at an angle)... Before removing the starter and drive shaft it is worth giving the following a shot: 1. Spray it with WD40 and let it soak 2. Hit it with a hammer (The shock can sometimes free the threads) 3. Try getting some mole grips on it (Gripping very hard) and try getting it started with them. 4. File yourself two flat edges so that you can get an open ended spanner on it and try to free it with that. If it's the upper bolt (which it probably will be because that's the one with the worst access) you have less room to work but you could try the above steps and if it was me I'd even be tempted to get an angle grinder and cut off the old CKP sensor to give me more room to try the steps above, before going down the disconnect the drive shaft route. Good luck with it! Cheers, Chris

    Hey mister you seem like a smart and knowledgeable man! :) any idea on why a 2008 Saturn Astra has trouble starting after starting fine?
    Saturn astra starts fine and then after I get to my destination and turn off my car, it has trouble starting again sometimes I have to wait 5-10 mins, I know it’s not the battery, perhaps the purge solenoid?

    Hi there, i have a 54 plate astra. I dont have any issues beside my car driving rough when the car with the spanner comes up, initially i thought that was a service symbol until i plugged into obd2 computer and came up as 'crankshaft sensor bank 1' isit a major issue to resolve?

      +Richi V Hi Richi. What was to code your scanner gave you?Was it P0335? If so, you need to change the sensor and this video shows you how you can do it yourself. It's not a difficult job. Let me know how you get on!

      +RandomChris hi my code is P0017

    • @christopher_barr
      @christopher_barr  8 лет назад

      Hi Richi, you can double check your codes on your Astra using the pedal test. Watch this video showing you how to do that.
      ruclips.net/video/MqUMXeqO9Hg/видео.html
      Engine sensors do tend to break after a while. If you want to know how they're constructed, and how to test them, check out this video (also read the description below the video, which has most of the detail about how to test engine sensors.)
      ruclips.net/video/AAbSwQlczDU/видео.html
      If you confirm the P0017 falt code there are four possibilities:
      1. Wiring fault (Crankshaft or camshaft sensor) This is fairly unlikely.
      2. Faulty crankshaft or camshaft position sensor. This is the most probable cause.
      3. Mechanical fault. Unlikely.
      The videos above will definitely help you.
      Good luck and let us all know how you get on!

    Hi I know it has been several years since you posted this feed. But i'm wondering if you can help. The below information is extracts from conversations with local mechanics and youtubers. I've highlighted my response with Questions and mechanic and youtubers response in Answers denoted by letters.
    (Q) Astra H MK5 SRI XP, starts fine drives fine, white smoke when trying to accelerate. It chokes and coughs 2-3 times on acceleration and then a plume of white smoke covering the entire rear screen, goes away and drives fine. Only happens when I try to hard accelerate. I notice fuel is affected.
    (A) Could be a oil seals failing on your turbo. Take off your intercooler and you should expect about 10 ml of oil collected for a healthy system. If you're finding pints of oil then spend money to replace the turbo.
    (Q) Just another question, the other day another mechanic mentioned faulty coil pack and replacement of this and plugs. Another mechanic said that the cheap ebay Rocker Cover (i purchased last year) with Gasket kit is the fault, due to excessive pressure trying to excapse when lifting off the oil cap after hot engine run. Advised to get a recommended OEM Rocker Cover at nearly £250 from Europarts. All seem to rebunk failing oil seal turbo. What does this all sound like? Please note, mechanic ECM ODReader pickup a Crankshaft issue but this was cleared before I the chance to note it down.
    (A) the rocker cover shouldn't have pressure in it when everything is running properly. It's job is to make sure oil doesn't escape and leak everywhere. If you are seeing a lot of pressure build up in the rocker cover then it's likely that the seals have gone in your cylinder (piston rings).
    (Q) Thanks again. Would you advise to ignore the Coil Pack Spark Plug replacement? What's likley cost for seal replacement in cylinder (piston rings)? All they want me to do is replace things by not honing in on what the issue could be, but I can understand how difficult it would be without hooking it up to a management system.
    (A) HI there, from reading the above I would suggest the piston rings or the head gasket. Obviously its very hard to diagnose any issues with the car without seeing it, white smoke is typically from water getting into the engine via the head gasket, cracks in the cylinder or the turbo cooling system, if it was black or blue smoke I would suggest something more oil related. Is there an oily residue on the rear screen after the smoke? I would hold off on spending any more money on parts and conduct a compression test to the cylinders, this would narrow it down to the head gasket, rings or a crack somewhere. Also is the engine management light on, if you don't have an OBD reader I would suggest buying one cheap and seeing if there are any codes thrown up. Hopefully that helped.
    (Q) Summary; Today I purchased a replacement Coil Pack and Plugs and a OBD Code Reader and have in basket a Vauxhall Astra H MK5 1.8 Petrol (2004-08) Camshaft Cam Position Sensor, not yet purchased.
    I'm hoping this will allow for no acceleration chokes and the erradication of white smoke.
    Any feedback would be appreciated.

    • @christopher_barr
      @christopher_barr  7 лет назад

      The first one is P0070 - Outside air temperature sensor -circuit malfunction [You can ignore this code]
      The second one isn't so clear - I saw a couple of options for it online. If it was my car I would check both the cam and crank sensors with a multimeter. You can do a resistance check on the disconnected sensor or check for a small AC voltage with the engine turning over (I would do this on both sensors).
      Have a look at this video of mine which goes into more detail about the sensors: ruclips.net/video/AAbSwQlczDU/видео.html
      These sensors do break down but sometimes you get symptoms and no codes...
      Also, check your battery voltage with the engine off (should be 12.4 - 12.6 Volts) and with the engine on (should be 13.5 - 14.5 Volts ish).
      If you need parts you can get good deals online here:

I am jealous of the literal football field of space you have under your Opel Astra to reach behind the motor from the top, or the bottom. Under mine, there is a drive shaft and other fun items in the way, I can touch the starter with 2 fingers, can't see or feel any bolt or sensor on the block behind the bottom of the starter. Just a sad sad day today when I realized I will be spending a substantial amount of time in the driveway once I figure out what to pull out to get to this sensor. Otherwise, great video by the way!
