The song is about lost friends, people the band members knew who died over the years. It's an emotional journey trying to convey sadness, anger, despair and then the anthemic call to never forget those you've lost. I'd say your reaction means they nailed it! I hope you're doing ok! That was a hell of a ride, huh?
I completely understand your reaction, I remember perfectly the first time I heard Ne' Obliviscaris. It was in 2019 on a video game map and it was the song "Painters of the tempest part 2" I remember that I hated most of the song, because the drums and vocals weren't for me, I wasn't used to it, but the The last 6 minutes of the song were beautiful and impacted my life, they completely destroyed me from an emotional point of view, so much so that I insisted on listening to it again and again and nowadays it is one of my favorite bands. I also had an anxiety attack listening, but it wasn't so strong as yours that I had to pause, at least I was able to insist on the band and really appreciate the work, the composition and how complex this band is. Your reaction was excellent, it was one of the best and most genuine I’ve seen on RUclips. Just a thank you...
This kind of metal is for sure meant to induce intensive emotions. Metal isn't always supposed to sound pleasant but it's rather an artform of extreme emotions.
This is one of the most interesting reactions I’ve seen to this song. I personally had the opposite effect. When I listened to this song I shed tears because of how beautiful I found the song to be. And personally, this is on of my go to songs to calm down when I’m anxious. Even though it’s such a heavy song, it somehow manages to calm me down.
I've never seen someone have an anxiety attack from music. It probably doesn't help that you're listening to it through Beats which are magnifying the bass. I hope it's obvious I say this in a positive light. I've been in and out of hospitals multiple times for panic attacks so I can relate to the feeling.
@@ThomasJ_Music Dan's precision and sheer stamina to deliver a wall of kick drums is absolutely fatiguing. If you haven't listened it yet, try the INCREADIBLE "And Plague Flowers the Kaleidoscope", by the same unbelievable musicians of Ne Obliviscaris metal band!
I was blown away, when i listened to this astonishing masterpiece for the first time. Couldn’t believe what i just heard. Pure emotions, it was such a beautiful Moment. Will never forget this. Felt like something exploded inside of me...Watching your reaction was touching...
I wish I could have recorded my first reaction to this song. It still makes me silently weep even after hearing it dozens of times. but that first time, good god. I was in a different place entirely. My body didn't exist anymore. the best part of this song, is that it's not EVEN THE END. THERE'S THREE MORE KICKASS SONGS AFTER THIS. What a fucking amazing band.
I am so freaking excited about this one. And this time you are super early to the party, because this band is still one of metal's best kept secrets. 3 whole hrs - Ahhhhhhhh!
I think will happen with this guy giving the great reaction he did he got set up with that violin it just tears you up and then that constant as he said machine-gun drumming just tears you up destroys you and all the sudden the breakdown brings you back down that was a great review you hit it dead-on as far as the emotion in the way it made you feel I get it this is the only band but I've ever heard like this I have heard a lot of bands these people stand way above the pack
Still my opinion but now I´ve seen them live, performing this song and it made me feel like listening to it for the first time again. Ultimate chills and crying while softly headbanging to it x)
I watch these NeO reaction videos because I love seeing the physical responses the band evokes in many people. Your reaction is crazy though. You looked incredibly distressed at a point, which blows me away for various reasons. I wish I had a recording of my initial reaction to this band. Personally, their music takes me on a journey that I've never been on with any other music. I get the tension/release thing, but my reaction to the tension is to zone out and let it consume me until the release comes. I'm sorry it made you feel anxious, it looked very uncomfortable for you. As others have echoed, their song Eyrie has significantly fewer and shorter blast-beat sections, and there are fewer layers to the music for most of it. I don't think that music is necessarily great if it evokes that sort of reaction in you. If you think you'd be able to listen to this song again or to another one of theirs, I'd be curious to know what you think of them the 2nd time around.
Thanks for taking the time to comment! It seems silly now watching the video back, but couldn’t help it at the time. I’ve been ok listening to it again since. Actually enjoyed the layers of music and would definitely listen to more from them
I have to say that I didn't know the band, and this song went straight to my favorites the first time I heard it in a suggestion on Spotify. I didn't even notice the name of the band.... It took quite a while before I listened to this song again, but when I did, I had to listen to more of the band. Since then, they continue to impact me every time I listen to them. Desde entonces, me siguen impactando cada vez que los escucho. Y sí. Esos bajos de batería.. uff. )
Great reaction and hope you recovered. As has been said, music can cause many emotions, and contrary to popular belief metal is not all about aggression and hatred it is more often about understanding the difficulties of life, learning to live with them and then live with others. I think you have seen this through Fade to Black, Master of Puppets, Cemetary Gates and there are many more. For me being a metalhead is about understanding and being comfortable with yourself first and foremost (even the bits you don't like) and then being tolerant of other's views, beliefs and lives. If you want to dig a bit deeper into the prog/death metal sub-genre then Mid-era Opeth is the daddy (Blackwater Park, Deliverance, Damnation albums), more recently Slice the Cake's (I know it's a daft name for a death metal band) album Odyssey to the West is an absolute classic (reaction to "Stone and Silver Part I - The Mountains of Man" would be worth doing, I think you will like it) and Wilderun's album Veil of Imagination is superb.
I’m so sorry to hear that the double bass overwhelmed you. It’s become one of my favourite parts of music because it somehow calms me. But i totally understand how it can make you feel the complete opposite way. Its been four years and i’m guessing you’re using different headphones by now. I think you might enjoy this type of music better is you can dimm the lower notes.
The Bands name is the centuries-old scottish-Welsh motto for the Campbell Clan, and it translates to "Forget not" I only know this because I am a Campbell and I've researched my heritage.
Ne Obliviscaris = Amazing musicians creating incredibly complex and technically difficult compositions that do not really appeal to me. There are some parts that I could say I enjoy, but overall, not for me. So I can understand your reaction - not all music, will appeal to all people regardless of how "brilliant" it may be. Plenty of other bands out there to enjoy.
you could try Eyrie or And Plague Flowers the kaleidoscope but blast beats are a part of the sound although often not as constant, and you either love it or loathe it it seems. If you watch the live drum playthroughs on Dan Presland's channel you can see how amazing it actually is and how much there is other than blast beats. The hardest job with these guys would be mixing the audio and there is often a lot of discussion around how it was mixed.
Damn I never met someone who would get uncontrollably anxious at music. I mean this kind of music kinda scared me a bit when I was little but I eventually got into it cause I was curious about what it's all about.. Do you think you could brush off the anxiety eventually after listening to more of this and getting used to it or it's an absolute nay? Haha
@@ThomasJ_Music I hated ne obliviscaris at first and I forced myself to listen to it because my best friend kept telling me to, and now it is my favorite band. Eventually you just succumb to the emotion they're displaying even if those emotions include feelings of awe at some kind of all powerful doom lol. it's beautiful
maybe try a band like Coheed and Cambria? more specifically songs like Welcome Home, Mother Superior, In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth 3, and Neverender
WTG getting through it. It sucks that it had that impact on you. However, I've always felt that song that invoke an emotional response are the best songs. You dove into the deep end with this song, sir.
If you're willing to try another progressive extreme metal band you could take a listen to Vintersea and their song Old Ones (or the song Illuminated for a bit more mellow song). Their music gives off a bit of the same feeling as Ne Obliviscaris music does. Xenoyr from Ne Obliviscaris actually designed the album cover for Vintersea's latest album.
Man, Music should trigger emotions. I love this song, but I agree when it come to the double kick. However, it is supposed to inspire peace and tranquility, then build up the anxiousness to culminate in an emotional release full of color. Their favorite song of mine is Libera part 1: Saturnine Spheres.
Something you might find interesting could be Wintersun - it's a band from Finland, same as Nightwish, and the drummer is currently the drummer of Nightwish. Different style, not too hard, but the vocals are alternating between growly and clean. The musicianship in that one is just crazy good! ruclips.net/video/Tl5T-glTdXw/видео.html
would be cool to see you do something like Leprous. Rivers of Nihil, or Native Construct. those bands are very different from one another, but fall under the umbrella of prog, like NeO in their own way.
Yeah, I 100% Recommend Rivers of Nihil and Leprous. I don't know Native Comstruct but I'm about to look them up right now. If he had this much of an emotional reaction to Ne Obliviscaris, I can't even imagine what Leprous will do to him.
I don't know how your headphones are coloured, but when I tried beats headphones over ten years ago, they were extremely bass-coloured. Although it was a great experience for some genres, I would *not* want to listen to any kind of extreme metal with headphones coloured so bass-heavy as those I tried given how intense some of the drum parts can be. It might be that this is affecting your enjoyment of the song. I'd recommend something more neutral if your headphones are a bit bass heavy. But maybe that's not the case.
This is one of my favorite songs of all time for a long while now, too bad you found it offputting. Heres a type of prog you should find more appealing... I suggest your react to this song later: ruclips.net/video/GreHUrScbbA/видео.html
Hang on a minute... I can't remember if I recommended this band or not, but I'm surprised you're already taking on black metal. This stuff definitely isn't for everyone, but I hope you enjoy it!
I think you did suggest them once Professor Metal. I also mentioned them once, it wasn't this song though, so this must be your suggestion. Perfect choice - I go back to this song over and over, possibly one of my favourite songs of all time. ❤️ Nice to see there's a fellow BM fan here, or anywhere really!
They definitely got some elements but i dont think this is BM. I mean compared to something like Dark Throne,Emperor etc.. its just something different Nonetheless this band is fucking sick i discovered them yesterday and today ive listened to all albums multiple times in work and i love them!! :D Horns up for all BM fans!!
@@professormetal4411 That's what i want to say that this is a Prog band and not bm. I tought you were reffering them to bm when you said that you are surprised that hes taking already on BM...Whatever i dont want to argue here...maybe i got you wrong.
Sorry this song didn't hit the mark throughout. I get a similar sense of mind listening to Mastodon's songs Tread Lighty & Sultans Curse but still constantly listen to them for some reason
If you're ever getting back into Ne Obliviscaris, try out Eyrie. It's quite melodic compared to the other songs. At least more melodic than 'Forget Not'.
probably has something to do with your headphones. Metal is not meant to be bassy. the kicks probably were too shaky especially with beats headphones. the kicks needs to be tight not BOOM BOOM BOOM. i have bass boost functions on my headphone amp and its always off.
@@ThomasJ_Music I recommend picking up some HD58X's (from the Drop website). They perform great for the price and only have a very slight mid-bass emphasis. They work great for just about every genre and they don't need an amp. They also have pretty nice bass extension if you are into electronic or songs that have a deeeeeeeeeeep kick. Well worth it man!
I'm sorry the blast beats kind of ruined the experience for you. If you really want to try them again, Eyrie is a much less intense song, but it does still have some blast beats in it, a lot less intrusive and ever present than in this song, but they are there. It's softer and more relaxing, less layered, but the same style. One of my favourites too. I don't know if I'd even recommend listening to another song after seeing you get so anxious though. It was really difficult to watch, I wanted to take your headphones off for you lol. I think at this point, that's the only song that is less likely to have a negative effect on you. I would recommend trying this song again in the future though, when/if you think you can handle those drums. It may be a totally different experience later on. I hope you are feeling a bit calmer now, and hats off to you for sticking with it. This was probably the best and most nail biting reaction so far. Loved it! ❤️
It’s weird isn’t it. Don’t even know why it got me. The layering of all the sound was too much with that constant drumming. The length of time it went on for, it was just an overload I think!. I would definitely listen to more as they were excellent. They must be to do this to me!
@@ThomasJ_Music it took you to heaven, dropped you into hell without warning, then offered you relief. And however you feel about it, you'll probably never forget it. Maybe it achieved it's goal. Especially as even though it made you feel bad, part of you still wants to go back for more. You're awesome for doing this song, honestly. First time you don't do your research on a band and....you get the insanity of black metal lol.
@@ThomasJ_Music sounds an awful lot like love to me. So I hereby conclude that you love this band and just don't know it yet 😁🙃 How airtight is that argument? see you for the next vid. Look forward to see what you have lined up for the week. :)

That shit is pure.. And i believe u had one of the most authentic reactions to it. This band always takes me on a ride, but just not in the direction it took you.. Def a big step going to this from black sabbath and system of a down.lol I appreciate you man.
Dude fast constant double bass pedals amabd blast beats are common in all genres of metal. You look like you're being tortured and if you can't handle it don't force yourself to do it man.
Are you sure this anxious feeling wasn't the music trying to bring something out of you and you were stopping it? I mean this song can really break me down if I'm down, but in a good way, as in I'm released afterwards and all my bad feelings are gone...until they build up again. Either way, hope you're good buddy :)
@@ThomasJ_Music maybe another time it would have garnered more positive feelings but you never know what you're getting into hearing something for the first time! I don't know if you'll ever go back to this, but if you do I hope it's a bit more positive because it is a true piece of art.
I'm sure someone has probably already commented this though but i didn't see it so here it goes. You got the second word right but the first (ne) is pronounced nay. The name is Latin, meaning "forget not," essentially. So, by association i think this song is their most significant in terms of what they're about. Too bad it made you feel that way.
@@ThomasJ_Music 😆 it was funny but I've been corrected so many times because that seems to be a thing in metal, where all the bands have barely decipherable logos and IF you can read it you most likely pronounce it incorrectly so dude, no harm no foul. I love hearing folks say band names for the first time.
Alright after watching, I think you understand where some of the "Metal is just noise" stereotype comes from, I'm sorry you weren't enjoying it when it went full black metal but to be quite honest with you I wasn't expecting you to listen to this yet. Of course it only went full black metal for a few seconds, it was when that really high pitched growling voice was singing near the end of the song. Every other part either has elements of, or is simply progressive rock/metal.
@@ThomasJ_Music yeah some of these genres get pretty intense, and Black Metal doesn't fuck around. Maybe next weekend can we get some live Metallica from the 1989 Seattle concert? Yeah this is a good shout! My alternative at the minute is AirPods if I can get them hooked up properly
Professor Metal someone suggested it for sure! It may have been you!
I mean compared to something like Dark Throne,Emperor etc.. its just something different
Nonetheless this band is fucking sick i discovered them yesterday and today ive listened to all albums multiple times in work and i love them!! :D
Horns up for all BM fans!!
@@Alaner95 Ne Obliviscaris is literally a Prog. Black Metal band, fuck you mean?
@@professormetal4411 That's what i want to say that this is a Prog band and not bm.
I tought you were reffering them to bm when you said that you are surprised that hes taking already on BM...Whatever i dont want to argue here...maybe i got you wrong.
Oh man, if this made you anxious i can't wait until you listen to Painters of the Tempest
That’s been on the list for a while. It might be time to do it!
probably has something to do with your headphones. Metal is not meant to be bassy. the kicks probably were too shaky especially with beats headphones. the kicks needs to be tight not BOOM BOOM BOOM. i have bass boost functions on my headphone amp and its always off.
Fair point actually. Hadn’t thought of that
@@ThomasJ_Music I recommend picking up some HD58X's (from the Drop website).
Great way to describe what happened here
@@ThomasJ_Music sounds an awful lot like love to me. So I hereby conclude that you love this band and just don't know it yet 😁🙃
How airtight is that argument?
see you for the next vid. Look forward to see what you have lined up for the week. :)
I love this band and watching reactions from it.. As much distress it put you it, i couldn't help but laugh, not bc it was bothering you, but bc of the overwhelming wave it brought over you.. That shit is pure.. And i believe u had one of the most authentic reactions to it.
This band always takes me on a ride, but just not in the direction it took you..
Def a big step going to this from black sabbath and system of a down.lol
I appreciate you man.
Thanks! I’ve listened to it quite a bit since and it’s definitely something I’m more accustomed to!
Dude fast constant double bass pedals amabd blast beats are common in all genres of metal. You look like you're being tortured and if you can't handle it don't force yourself to do it man.
I think it was just how long the blast drumming went on for. Over 3 and a half minutes of constant blast drumming! It was relentless! 😂
@@ThomasJ_Music yep Dan presland I can confirm is not human... He has a couple videos of constant 210bpm double pedals for 10 MINUTES. So yea...
Are you sure this anxious feeling wasn't the music trying to bring something out of you and you were stopping it? I mean this song can really break me down if I'm down, but in a good way, as in I'm released afterwards and all my bad feelings are gone...until they build up again. Either way, hope you're good buddy :)
Luke F very possibly. You are quite perceptive! Weird what music can do to you isn’t it!
@@ThomasJ_Music maybe another time it would have garnered more positive feelings but you never know what you're getting into hearing something for the first time! Ah mate, music makes me feel everything on Earth and things I never knew I could feel, it really is a gateway.
Thanks Daniel. I think that was my Mancunian coming out when I said ‘Nee’ 😂
@@ThomasJ_Music 😆 it was funny but I've been corrected so many times because that seems to be a thing in metal, where all the bands have barely decipherable logos and IF you can read it you most likely pronounce it incorrectly so dude, no harm no foul. I love hearing folks say band names for the first time.
react to and plague flowers de kaleidoscope
Why you wanted drummer to stop? Does it hurt your ears or you just don't like long double beats?
Alright after watching, I think you understand where some of the "Metal is just noise" stereotype comes from, I'm sorry you weren't enjoying it when it went full black metal but to be quite honest with you I wasn't expecting you to listen to this yet. Of course it only went full black metal for a few seconds, it was when that really high pitched growling voice was singing near the end of the song. Every other part either has elements of, or is simply progressive rock/metal.
It was the kick drum! It was relentless! I actually enjoyed the whole song, just was overwhelming with all the layers! 😂
@@ThomasJ_Music yeah some of these genres get pretty intense, and Black Metal doesn't fuck around. Maybe next weekend can we get some live Metallica from the 1989 Seattle concert? I know I ask constantly and it probably gets a bit annoying, but it really is something you've just got to see. I'd love to see your reaction to ...And Justice For All from that concert.
Yeah I deliberately stayed away from the big guns of the channel last week as I didn’t want to just be doing Metallica, Nightwish, Billie Eilish etc. I will return with a few of them this week though
This may be one of the most earnest emotional reactions I've seen for Ne Obliviscaris. Glad you didn't like the song... I guess? Lol.
Strongest reaction on RUclips?....
This wasn’t fun! I think I said “I need it to stop!” 😂 feels so long ago now, but yeah my strongest reaction that I’ve had from a song by far
@@ThomasJ_Music It's cool though. I now learnt that you're really discoveribg the progressive side of music and that's a real passion of mine (started to listen to that stuff at age 11 and I'm now 55...) I have developed my taste to include extreme metal prog in later years but I know that's not for everyone... You might be open for some of the classic (late 60's through 70's) prog stuff on the other hand(?)
How high is this bloke? Yewww
Haha Me? Nope not high bro!
seems like hes on shrroms or something XD
The constant blast beats are actually my biggest gripe with NO. The drum patterns are really weak compared to the rest of the music.
