I remember in the late 70's / early 80's when round about me in our town new housing estates were being built and that was the only thing that stood out that was the putt putt of these engines.
Hi, not sure if it was a glitch in the filming - but to correctly set the fuel rack for starting you lift the flippy floppy thing up to allow the rack to move further to the left than it usually would - when it is limited by the adjustment screw coming up against the little tab - the position you had it in. The adjustment screw alters the full load fuel delivery. If you have it correctly in the ‘excess fuel’ position you’ll know about it as it’ll eject a cloud of very black smoke when it starts!
Thanks for this, I've been tasked with a few odd jobs on a farm and they showed me the dumper which is identical to this. Fingers crossed I can get her to fire over
Thanks for this tutorial, really useful! I don't have a Petter PH1 fitted to a Liner Roughrider Dumper, but I do have a Ford/PSA DLD-414 fitted to a 2005 Ford Fusion. They're both small, simple, tough diesel engines lacking in power and with an overall agricultural feel, fitted to vehicles that would look most out of place in the outside lane of the M6 - so I think most of it should translate!
What a great little video from Lawrie on how to "Start Humpty's Petter Engine". It is interesting to see what video topics come from the "Interesting Mind" of Lawrie to then show them on RUclips. I look forward to seeing what he comes up with next!!!!
Nice video mate. Can you come to the SVR gala one year? Maybe not this year as we only really have sherwood forester to see. If you do though can you check out Bewdley MPD on a weekend because I would like to meet you and I'm a volunteer there. Thanks
@@lmm Yes, that is a disappointing factor. I can only be there for the last day myself. Only been a junior volunteer (15) for 2 - 3 weeks. Love it there. Steam is lovely.
Fun as always Lawrie. Hope you’re doing ok. Back to work today and I must admit I didn’t take the train. I couldn’t resist a run with Sovvagn 🤪 Every time I see this little chap I want one… PS watched a JM video recently on a Saab 9-3 from 3 years ago in which he mentioned that you had a Saab. What was it out of interest? Did you ever do a video on it?
Hi Laurie, Great Video if you ever need any spare parts for that Dumper try A.T. Wilde & Son Ltd Dorrington Shrewsbury,I do enjoy watching your videos keep em coming 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
2:12 wrong!! no wonder its a pain to start, that's barely tickover my dude! it has to be pushed all the way to the left in order for the cold start to work. that little threaded bar on it is the tickover limiter, once it's fireed up it'll return into its natural position. give that a go!
Never lubricate the crankshaft and handle, if you do it will collect dirt and muck and make it more likely to get stuck and when you are cranking the engine stand in front of the handle and not to the side so the handle has a clear path should it come off, a good friend of mine lost all of his front teeth because he stood over the handle when it slipped off the crank shaft and hit him in his mouth whilst starting a stationary engine. I've just watched the video again and at one point you had gloves on to start the engine, dont, if there is a snag it could catch the glove and you will not be able to let go and keep the thumb with the fingers. I am not a safety officer but I've restored and shown stationary engines for the last 30 plus years, been there and done it and used the tee shirt as an oily rag.
You don't want the shaft to be dripping, but it needs lubrication to stop it catching, ala the first time I hand cranked it. Giving it a wipe is a good way to make sure there's no contamination. As you'll notice I don't normally wear gloves, for the reason you mentioned, but the attempt to fire it up the first time I'd cranked so much I had blisters!
Effectively it stops the engine compressing, meaning you can turn it over much easier. The engine will not start until compression returns to ignite the diesel
Yes indeed it was generally available on all these engines, but it depended upon the installation as to which end you started it from. My PH2 in my boat had the same (raised handstart). Currently I have an AV1A, and that is nice and easy to start camshaft end too!
i see Lawrie , a Dumper & a starting handle .. instant like , now to watch & see what colour Lawrie ends up
ooh , it was Humpty , now no longer a challenge to Lawrie .. lol
Same here
Same here
Sorry to disappoint!
That brings so many memories from a job I had in 1983
Easy. Excess fuel stop released, decompressor engaged, crank like fook, drop decompressor, keep cranking till smoke appears! 👍
Also, oil on crankshaft, don’t let go of the handle. 30 years experience in this. 👍
Put put put, away it goes!
After all this time, this is till one of my favorite vehicles you've resurrected. Its charming practicality is unmatched.
It's super isn't it. Really charming little thing

Synonymous with buildings sites!

Almost 95% of the instructions should be relevant!
What a beauty! Handy, simple, reliable. No bateries, no antifreeze. No problem!
Super isn't it!
Fantastic little machines and the starting of it brings back many memories :)
They're great things aren't they!
Awesome thanks, had mine a few years now, and you just taught me it has a primer 😂 will test that.
It does make a difference!
Great video
Looked at one on a Johnson dumper last week, my mad kids have asked for one for Christmas. Couple of chips of the old block
Oh that's super! Hope it happened

Glad you enjoyed it - lots of fun stuff coming up
Humpty makes such a fun noise
Doesn't it just!
I've just bought 1 of these nice to see an original version
Oh super! Good luck with it!
Remember I used to repair them they were used in cement mixers as well the single cylinder lister engine was much the same
That's it!
Good little instruction Lawrie! I do worry though about breathing in the first few breaths from the clouds of smoke?! 🙏
Hold your breath! 😂
i love to see this technique so simpel and easy to handle
It's great!
That sure is a funky little vehicle
Isn't it just
Well i guess you guys are experts on this typ of machines
Experts is a little bit of a stretch. Enthusiastic is a better fit

I did it last year, sadly won't be able to this year. Normally a good event though. Sad there's no all night running this year

I had a 9-5. It went before the channel started
I was taught keep your thumb on top of the handle not around it , and cold days it was common to set fire to a cement bag placed on the engine
Yes, keep the thumb out the way.
That makes sense, little heat makes a big difference
hey lawrie thanks for the video 8D i have been patiently waiting this type of content and you have been satisfying other interests of late.
I'm pleased to hear you're enjoying what we do!
On a very cold and frosty morning ours hated waking up used every day all day, I hated it but still a great piece of kit
They do not like the cold 😂
I just get the Mrs to.give me a tow start! Saves time and frustration especially as my engine.needs a rebuild bad!🤣🤣
That is the easier option yes 😂
We have the same/similar engine in our generator. There's definitely a knack to it!
Yeah! Once you've got it it's great!
I think numpty needs to join the stance community.... XD
Would be hilarious to turn up to a meet on it
@@lmm maybe get that shite dumper you recently started
Clean machine 1960s

Thank you very much for the suggestion!
Where is Matt? does'nt he normally pull the compreession lever over at just the right time and fiddle with the injectors?
I've got it sorted now so you can do it one manned.
Normally he just flicks over the decompresor
Will you be letting people have a go starting it at the MSLR?
Definitely not.
And I thought my key ring was heavy, you have me beat.
Least you don't forget them!
@@lmm not if I want to start my car or get into work...
you said you had filled it twice since you And also roughly how long were you operating it to go through A tank of feul?
I've filled it twice since I got it.
It runs from anything from ten mins to an hour, every other weekend say?
@@lmm how much does the tank hold 2 or three gallon and thanks for the previous reply.
@@caldaq219 5 litres or so?
It's pretty small

Completely makes sense with that being the direction of throttle

To keep your thumb out of the way, place it on top, next to your fingers.
Yes I keep trying to do that
What is a decompressor?
Effectively it stops the engine compressing, meaning you can turn it over much easier.
The engine will not start until compression returns to ignite the diesel
@@lmm ahhh yes now eith this explanation and the video when you « engage » compression again I see :) Thanks!
Doesn't matter what colour the oil is, just as long as there's something slippery in there
With some of these older engines, not too far from the truth
A gallon a day way hay!
Humpty's back! Is he ever going to get a restoration video, or is he just "good enough" as is?
Once the tractor is sorted Humpty is next in line for some love
@@lmm That's nice to hear!
My bad. The PH1 is indeed a four stroke
I was so confused initially - but I have the document from when the engines where new
How interesting I was riveted to my chair.
my PH2 starts even faster it has the hand crank attachment on the camshaft :)

When starting an engine is a substitute for the gym...
It was when I tried doing it in winter
These are robust little dumpers. I bet some of the modern small dumpers wouldn't last as long as these have?
Oh I'm sure of that
Not how you cold stary a petter. Have a go like that on a worn 2 cyl.
See the abandoned dumper video!
The fut fut machine
Isn't this the same dumper that got you demonetized 😅
We've never been demonetized.
That video was briefly flagged as swearing, and then RUclips realised their mistake.
