"Terrain building is 50% making and 50% hiding where you've messed up" LOL. I picked a motte and bailey castle made from recyclables as my second-ever piece of wargaming terrain, and you have just descibed the experience perfectly. Although fixing stuff may have taken more than 50% of the time, actually. A major learning experience, but a lot of fun and I'm happy.

For the second technique (lego mold) I like using clay kitty litter. It will soak up moisture from the pva making the whole thing a solid piece. Makes a construction that is nigh on indestructable and also weighs less. And a 1£ bag is enough to fill out 10+ tables with old ruins.
Not to mention (he said as he mentioned it) kitty litter can be crunched to get smaller rocks.

Thanx Mel, a subject much overlooked. When newb wargamers ask what they should build first, tell them to make walls. Its about the simplest thing to do and they will surely need them to play battles. --- You asked for tips so here's one: You dont need to base them completely. Make tabs of thin plastic and glue one on the bottom sticking out either side at random points. Then flock the tabs and stick a small bush on it if you want. You only need one tab per side to keep the wall from tipping over.

Loved your techniques. I used to buy cheap tiny rocks and divide them into portions and paint each a different earth tone color then mix them as I make miniature Native American Pueblo's. I live on a site where there are Indian ruins in my front yard and spotted a large red ant hill, they pulled out a huge pile of tiny earth color rocks so now I collect those in the winter months when the ants are hibernating, otherwise they resent my presence disturbing their rock pile. I wash them off then store them for use. I did put them thru a food sifter with larger holes so I have perfect size rocks.
In my opinion the built wall looks much better than the foam one. However the foam wall has a much better paint effect going for it. Will apply those to the block built wall. Thanks for the awesome video

That lego method is AWESOME! Definitely using that when I build walls for dungeons in an upcoming campaign I'm hosting.
Love how the walls are created. Plan to use these with my Fairy House and Water Fountain designs. They will be perfect.

The walls look great, Mel, I like the look of the one made with actual rocks, but I think the painting technique on the engraved one looks great, I'll have to mix the two and see how they turn out. Also, I was watching some older tutorials last night, I must say, they really have improved recently, keep up the good work mate.

Nice guide to walls. The tip about cutting around rocks to press them in individually is a good one. The choice of angular rocks for the press-in wall are a great choice. Great job!

The tip of a soldering iron is a quick way of making the outlines of the rocks, just do it in a well ventilated area because it doesn't smell too flash.

I actually love the little bitty stone one that you made with the Lego blocks I wasn’t a fan at the first but when you did the long shot it looks just like 90% of the stone walls that are around Missouri we are nothing but rock great video look forward to seeing many more of your tutorials
Much thanks. After a few years of hesitation, I've had a go at making a wall from fine acquarium pebbles. Plan from there is to use it as a master for a Pinkysil cast.

Hey Mel, I know this video is an older one, but one thing about the bases of the walls: when you cut off the corners in a 45° angle, you can place them better in curves and as "T" pieces or corners. :D besides that: cheers mate! these walls look fancy!

ok I have been watching a lot of tutorials lately particularly building walls. The stone wall with lego technique is simply brilliant in its simplicity. I am going to try this out on a slightly larger scale for the diorama I have in mind, but well done and thanks for sharing

I like the engraved one better, actually. The PBA and gravel method makes less of a believable stone wall and more of a tooth-breaking granola bar. But you arted up both brilliantly. Thanks for your videos!

great vid as always, i've been thinking of making a load of walls, ten foot or so. at the moment i'm thinking of doing one good 6" piece in fimo, then cast two mould/press halfs off it, in fimo. then roll das to size and press in mould, tip it out and press another etc. leave them to dry and base them.

Two different methods, both I'm going to look into but I prefer the 2nd option that used legos because it seems far less stressful and required much less time required. This will make my Lord of the Rings events a lot more fun once I get started on some scenery

I just made a couple of stone/brick walls out of air dry clay from the dollar store. Quite simple to do, though you'd think making each brick would be a pain in the neck it really wasn't that bad.
