This guy sounds like he is having so much fun.
It's my passion
yeh
Thanks for thinking of us without fancy tools!
and no high density foam :D
AxDhan That stuff seems impossible to get for me :(
Always bud ;-)
TheTerrainTutor what do you get
TheTerrainTutor Where do you get your bases
Loving revisiting these videos with Bolt Action 3rd Edition getting me hyped!
This guy is talking about the paint job “not being perfect” and I am here all amazed lol.
"get in your foxholes boys, the palm trees are coming!". Didn't spot the twiccors this week. still looking good though dude! good work!
not sure how i wound up here, but ended up going down a rabbit hole watching all kinds of these terrain creation videos yesterday. These are fantastic, well done!
Welcome to the hobby terrainiac! ;-D
Take a sip every time he says "ye?". Good luck
Thanks for the tutorial mate
Or "whatchyacouwlit" lol, love ya Mel!!
Brilliant. My grandson is going to love. Me when I make some of those for him.
The video I've been looking for! Brought back many memories. If you can sleep in one of those you can sleep anywhere. Can't wait to use these on my tabletops.
+1 for the sleep comment :-)
Hah, someone's getting really good at pointing around the screen at the end. Having gone back to watch your first vid again that amused me no end
I tried, could only manage the first 20s
So that is how you cut polystyrene. I have always had issues with that stuff. Thanks for sharing this.
Here to help bud
Great tutorial; they look fantastic. Really looking forward to starting on some for my own table!
nice to see you using the expanded polystyrene Mel, like you say it's more readily available. They look fantastic.
Keeping it simple matey ;-)
Two things that I would like to see in Let's Make videos are Trees, and Hedgerows.
You won't have to wait long mate
excellent.
Hey Mel they look great ! Yeah ?
fantastic yeah guys ? Yeah !
Mel I just recently found your content and wanted to thank you for all the amazing tutorials and videos of your excellent work. Subscribed for life and wish nothing but good things for you sir! You are an absolute inspiration to me and I’m sure countless other devoted fans of the hobby.
Old but still gold !
Cheers Mel, for a great video... and also for bringing back fond memories of digging my bloody trenches. Would I do it again if I could, hell yes!! 😝
Too true brother!
I loved touring these
Thanks for doing a video using regular bobbly styro. I've got some corner bits from a package that I want to make into a ruined house/bunker, so now I just need to get some filler!
Crack on mate
Hadn't thought about using spackling. Can't believe I didn't think of it. Just getting started on terrain, and your videos are super helpful!
And its a lot more fun than buying ready made stuff!!!!
thanks for this Mel!!! so much stuff I can use for Legion
I just found this channel yesterday and have been binge watching nonstop. Great channel.
I've found a cheap and easy replacement for hot wire tools. A D battery, a key on each terminal and some wire strung between them works a treat for me.
Cheers for this one Mel, I was wondering how to make some scatter trenches! :)
no probs mate
Wow my friend your technique is amazing very easy to learn, thanks you very much I hope to see more videos like that.
Really looks good! Your techniques are so simple but yield such advanced looking terrain. Great job!
That's what I'm here for bud
Nice video just stop saying **jeah** 20times in a row.
You sir are a true genius. My bolt action league thanks you for your vids.
Nice job Mel
Cheers mate
This is an incredible tutorial, thanks for posting this. I’ve been lamenting over how to do trenches for months now, as I’ve been wanting to do a gigantic trench warfare board. I’m definitely keeping this video handy for that.
Just starting my own trench works/defensive line battlefield project. So glad I checked out the link on the Warlord Games email. This is amazing love the Vids. Has helped me out immensely would've never thought of using filler. Thanks for taking the time and making these :D
Welcome aboard buddy!
Lovely turorial. I'd like to also see how you would decorate some that look more 'freshly dug'.
Just found this video and instantly became a subscriber! Love the video and I will keep checking out more vids! This video gave me more inspiration!
simple, inexpensive, brilliant, fantastic
Great results, minimal cost and effort! me likey!
cheers
Brilliant! Great video presentation too.
Thanks mate
Impressive, as always! Simplistic, yet so detailed; keep up the good work!
Sencillamente brutal!!!!!!
Enhorabuena Mel
Thanks
Spettacolare!!!Complimenti
Very nice work!
That feeling when I decided to turn of add block to support this channel, and then the first add I see is a three minute long video about an alcoholic finnish engineer. Great tutorial though, so I think that it was worth it.
RUclips has been waiting a long time to serve you that advert lol. Thanks bud, gave me a giggle
Thanks for all of your education! But i wonder how many redoubts would actually have grass on them. The battle might be long over before any grass grows.
In the British Army, you relay the tufts and keep your spoils hidden, just part of camouflage doctrine
This was a great video. Thanks for the tips.
Hope it helps ya bud
Hi Mel. I have watched many of your videos and I am putting some of these techniques into practice working with kids in a special educational needs school. Can I ask, do you put pva or anything under the das modelling clay sandbags to help it stick?
Hey a have a copy of your book .it’s really good
Hola, que muy buena maquetas, fabricados, con materiales de resicla vale, Saludos.👍👏🤛👊🤜🤝😷🤔🤔👍
As always ... what a great video ...
Very well illustrated and well explained, truly inspiring... great job
and what a funny sound (20:43) he he ...
Many thanks for showing and keep up the good work ... ;-))
ps.
Perhaps you would make one in city / urban style ... ?
LOL. We've got an urban apoc style stuff coming in the next let's make series matey ;-)
The flock you are using which brand, name and type is it ?
Or is it something you make yourself out of sawdust ?
TERRAIN HARDY
Javis premium range mate
Thanks for the Tips.
Another good un Mel
For larger trench sections, you might want to consider taking toothpicks and chopping them down, using them for pinning.
That'll work, nice tip
what I really like about you videos apart from the great models you make is the fact that you dont use 20 bottles of Vallejo paint at £4 to £7 a bottle( i went into Homebase yesterday and they were selling testers, the whole range at 50p a bottle, WOW fill your boots
Love your style
David
It's the way we roll buddy ;-)
Fantastic video, love your vids, I was wondering where you get your bases from I can’t find them anywhere lol I’m in the au
Great stuff sir!
Looking good sir!
cheers
Do one with snow please
Take a shot, every time he says, "yeah", dead in minutes
._.
Ye
Now I can’t not hear it
Nice work: a bit of trivia that might be useufl, if you care about historical practice. Corrugated metal was seldom used in trenches and similar structures, because if hit by artillery it would break up into shrapnel. But that's a minor quibble, your stuff look good!
That's interesting, I've seen it in a few reference photos but mainly they're wooden planking. You'd have thought the wood would be worse for shrapnel mate
TheTerrainTutor I'm no expert but wood apparently would disintegrate. At least that's what I heard. But as I said, your trenches look good anyway.
Leif Eriksson
Just curious now, I've got an engineers field manual from the BEF, I'm off to do some reading! Cheers bud
TheTerrainTutor if I'm wrong please tell me!
What was the research outcome?
I think I need to bastardize this for some playable Hobbit Homes with removable tops!!!
inspiring as usual
Thanks
Thank you
Hi Mel, LOVE your vids - SO inspiring. Really like your flock blend, what make is it?
Cheers mate, it's from Javis scenics
Cheers Mel...you are a legend...keep up the awesome work!
excellent.
Cheers
Hiya Mel, Bloody good drills! You have given me a few ideas for a diorama for next years (Wing Activities Weekend - Air cadets) Many thanks, with Kind Regards FS Johnny Cooper SNCO I/c DisCip 457 Squadron (Farnborough) ATC aka Johnny. Still would like to see base board for Hoth (Snow) diorama...hint (LoL!)
We'll get round to Hoth eventually mate ;-)
SUPER!!!!
Merci beaucoup!!!
Thanks
Looks great! :D
hey Mel.....love the video. what would you recommend for a more snow covered Somme like version of what you've done there?
Just use darker browns and snow flock mate
Hi Mel,
Terrific tutorial and the results are awesome, thank you. You mentioned graves during the tutorial, would you follow the same technique, bevelling, cutting and such to produce a dug grave with a mound of earth next to it only leaving much more base around the edge of the grave?
Thanks again for the tutorial.
Elaine
depends, are you looking for an open grave? shallow? coffin in? different techniques for each mate
TheTerrainTutor Thanks for the reply. Open grave, shallowish with a coffin inside would be what I was looking for.
Elaine
In that case, I'd build a lip up out of clay/putty, shape my grave so it was 10mm deep, and then just put a coffin lid in the bottom, covering it's edges with grit, it'll look like it's just been dug up or in the process of being buried
That sounds terrific. Thanks for the help, I appreciate it. Cheers
very nice should have added battle damage like blast craters and bullet holes
their not slopy at all mate! I've seen some of your other work too! you know you're good!! lol 😂😂
Question for you, sir ... what's a redoubt, and how does it differ from the above?
Hi Greame. I can't speak for Mel, but the major difference is that a redoubt is a more permanent structure, built on clear principles of defense, including enfilading fire and strong delaying possibilities such as ditches, embankments, tunnels, trenches and so forth.
The nadir of the redoubt was probably the 17th century, although they were still popular into Napoleonic times. Look up Vauban on line for more information about one of its most famous proponents.
What Ant said mate ;-)
Cheers mate!! Do you have a good "beginner's supply list" that would guide us green hobbyist?
Check the back to basics playlist bud
TheTerrainTutor is that in the first video? Also, I'm so inspired by your Burma build! It looks absolutely incredible; I want to make a small jungle for my 40k battles
Look for 'your common terrain questions answered' mate
Mel, do you have any videos specifically on making desert terrain? I am working on a North Africa scenario and need to make a bunch of foxholes, shell holes and slit trenches. Any suggestions on making sand look more realistic?
Instead of using grass, try to cover your trench with sand. Then try to use a dry brush, or ink. I've made a scenario like that, and it's really cool.
Go light and wash with light browns mate ;-)
I like it like that
Cheers
Great like normal
Cheers bud
Hey Mel would you recommend using a seasoning shaker to apply flock and grit? I find my current technique with a plastic shot glass too messy and I feel I waste material when I hand apply. Suggestions?
I've always just used my hand mate but it's got to be worth an experiment :-)
Could you make a video showing how to build an L trench with a tin roof?
Probably not mate, I've already covered the techniques to do it and there's no major demand for a specific video
very funny guide *cheer*
Glad you enjoyed it mate
subscribed as I'm trying to get my eldest into WW2 wargaming...
Good luck bud!
Love it videos ty so much
1 thing I would say maybe post links to where u get ur materials as I am struggling to find them
Amazon has most everything used here
quick question.....How did you fix the clay to your mold. also when making sanc bag walls how do you get the clay to hold together. I have had problems with the clay separating from its self.
Wet it mate, helps it bond ;-)
man need a vid on how meany times cut ben poke an stuck your self
too many!
I want ti make one of these and put it on a battleground with a sherman tank and maybe some plastic army men for soliders
Is that a slayer sword? :O
I wish! lol
Yeah
Hi,
If these are improvised, how come they've got grass growing all over them? Should't it be all dirt and mud and stuff?
You don't leave your spoils showing mate, it's a dead giveaway that it's a defended position mate
What company makes that flock, it looks like a more dense material than standard flocking materials.
It is, it's from Javis scenics
great work
please give me advice I'm trying to make a D-day diaroma out of that foam stuff you using any ideas
Check out my d-day board in the project logs playlist mate
thanks wildo
yeah
great vid..as always! But flocks on breastworks doesn't seem right. Because it's a heap of dug up sand . Grass, maybe, but flocks? hmmm anyway keep up the good work LOL
Yeah, I said the same in the vid
what's the name of the filler you use? would you remmomend making exploded creaters from the same filler?
I use diall from B&Q and yes, works great mate
What's the specific name? They do a few under that name do they not? Thank you very much for replying. I've been watching all your videos last few days as I hope to make my own table using your work as inspiration
would this work for 54mm toy soldiers ? Or would it have to be larger ? If so, how much larger ? Thanks !
Just under twice the size mate
Thanks !
For Napoleonics or Civil war what would suggest for tops not sandbags.
Are the sand bags glued on at any point?
Nope, as long as its wet, they bind
@@TheTerrainTutor Thank you for the response!!
I personally but barbed wire but really good video
What did you use for the base?
Expanded PVC Foamboard
Mel, have you ever served in the military?
Master...
Sorry mate, but i need your help because my bad english cant catch wich material are you using to do the base :( . Wath is that flat and white thing?
Expanded PVC foamboard mate
TheTerrainTutor thank you soo much !
