Thermostat Wiring

- Today I want to talk about how simple a thermostat really is how the common and hot wire goes to a transformer, how you tie the white wire for the heat strip, connect the green wire which controls the indoor blower and the yellow wire (compressor) directly with each other from the thermostat in the event you have a an emergency where your thermostat goes bad, you can use the system in the heating cycle by tying the red wire, the yellow wire and the green wire together in an emergency situation or if the outdoor heat pump is not working you can tie together the white wire, the green wire, and the red wire. In the summertime for cooling you would tie the yellow wire, the red wire, and the Green wire together. If you have any questions please visit our website or check out our other videos on this and many other HVAC topics.
Thanks for watching!

This guy is the best! He explains EVERYTHING. He's the first one I've found that goes through trouble shooting. Glad to have him out there.
I did not even finish the video yet. I had to go leave a comment. This video is what people need. Thank you

You are not lying about that!!!!
What color does the green wire go to on an ac unit
Amazing! I love folks that share their expertise and speak my language!
You're right! It's not complicated! I just needed it explained clearly! Thank you so much - first time home owner, strapped for cash, and now the master of my HVAC system!
Wonderful video, in fact the best video. Thank you David for being thorough in your presentation.
You are very sincere gentleman.
You love to help from bottom of your heart
All respect to you!!
David you are amazing, sharing your knowledge and putting out quality vids.
He does a good job of explaining the details that many other videos did not share. It is easy to troubleshoot.
Thank you so much for this video!I'm a widowed woman and my digital thermostat went bad and I could not figure out how to get my furnace to blow heat..until I watched your video.Thank you so so much, truly appreciate you makin' this.
Thank you David, your instruction got my gas heat to work, manually, and it is heating my house.
I connected the Red, Green and White and the furnace went on, great. Thank you again.
I have to replace my 35 years old Programmable Robertshaw analog thermostat (battery operated quartz movement).
Thank you, so much! I changed the thermostat 2 months ago and realized that I hadn’t connected the heat element wire! I took pictures of my old thermostat and the”W” was hidden; I assumed it was the ground a wire that I didn’t need! It’s been cold this week and if it weren’t for your video , I would’ve called a someone to check our unit because the fan was working but no heat! 🙏🏼 thank you! My home is warm and cozy
David Jones may be a tradesman, but he is being a professional here. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. It really is very simple. I almost hired a service tech for an $85 service call (and that is cheap nationally).
Great Video. It is nice to know that so many viewers picked up on the "Missing Orange Wire" in the cooling section. I take it that most unit's reversing valves come in the "Heat Position." Just trying to learn a little bit about the workings of a heat/cooling pump. FR
That is what I am looking for. He used the same wires for heat pump and Cool
just to let you know nobody explains it so well as you do. you are a great teacher.
thank you so much I'm struggling to understand this wiring.
Thank you you saved my butt, Trying to find a HVAC technician on Memorial Day weekend Was impossible or too expensive A little trick to hotwire for cool Save me my family from a hot weekend
Thank you Sir for video. I fixed my thermostat watching this video. Your a great service to your fellow man.
I just want to stop by and say thank you. I'm doing a self install on a Goodman 4 ton Package unit with a new wifi thermostat. The control board told me everything was working properly but the fan would not engage. So I followed your direction (testing) and sure enough it was a bad brand new thermostat..Now I get $100 back on the return and paid $27 for a different non wifi thermostat. Once again thank you..
Very informative and useful for the homeowners... thank you for parting with your knowledge and know how 👍🏼

Thank you so much its 16 degrees here and my thermostat went out yesterday. Got the heater going thanks to you.!
This is a great video that demystifies what even some HVAC technicians consider "complicated.
When you gain experience over the years you becomes the godfather in what you doing, this is what the video said beside the wiring. thanks and thumbs up..

March 2024.
Thank you so much for this information. You just saved me some money.
I am 3 months in to the a.c trade learning to become better at my job thank you so much I will learn and apply this thank you Mr jones
I love this guy! "It's not rocket science." - what a good message which says "you can do it too!"
Thank you David, very easy to understand and straight forward videos. I am trying to troubleshoot Goodman heat pump. Now I am equipped with some good first troubleshooting steps for my handyman to execute. You right it’s not rocket science, but many folks struggle to understand it all, simply because there are so many components in a heat pump. I think you simplified them quiet a bit for sure. There are other things as well such as pressure switches etc, but overall I think this video is solid. I like it... tomorrow I will be doing some pressure testing along with evacuation procedure and some thermostat troubleshooting. Note I am just home owner not HVAC tech. I was thinking now that I run my whole house on solar, maybe I will also install heat strip.... or maybe my 2nd stage heat... or should I say 3rd.... I have radiators in my house heating up my house with tankless water heater.... I wonder if I can hook up my thermostat to all 3 things.... heat strip.... and my tankless water heater.....
I want to achieve the following.... by default heat pump heating my house with forced air... then if it gets cold... heat strip comes on.... then if it gets super cold.... my tankless water heater turns on....
Note my tankless water heater uses gas which is cheaper than electricity ....however I got solar panels now... so I don’t care about electricity usage anymore.... hence by default I want to use heat pump forced air.... and only have tankless gas water heater heated radiators to come on only if it’s a lot colder below 32 degrees for example....
So do I just hook up my tankless water heater as the second stage to w2 wire?
I am a bit confused... I don’t want my heat boiler to work when my heat pump is working, and want it to turn on automatically.... when it’s colder than 32 degrees....
I kind of like strip heat since it gives immediate satisfaction as well.... when it comes to forced air.... but I don’t want to operate on it for a long time....
Only initially just to give me initial quick heating satisfaction in my 1500 square foot home.... but then have itself turn off automatically when it gets warmer and boiler used instead....
Is it even possible to do? Or am I way overboard here? Maybe I should use if this then that automation with Alexa integrated feature to program tankless water heater to turn on while having heat pump turned off....
I haven’t wrapped my mind around all of this yet.... if you have any suggestions let me know.
Thank You so much.
Thanks for being so kind in sharing this. I greatly appreciate it.
Best vid I have seen. Wish you had mentioned Rheem and Ruud and where to connect reversing valve wire (normally orange) since their reversing valve works backwards from other mfg. In other mfg heat pumps it energizes the reversing valve in the cooling mode but with Rheem and Ruud it energizes the reversing valve in the heating mode.
This video is exactly what we all needed!! You are soo amazing!!
Great video Mr. Jones Thank you. ......👍
Top notch presentation. I feel like you are in my corner. Thank you much.
I learned something today, very good explanation.
Fix!! My yellow wire was disconnected.💪thanks!!!
Great video. The only 1 I could find that explained the orange wire and the "O" on the mounting plate. Thanks
Great job of explaining everything. Easy to follow your instructions
The way you explain is so awesome. Love all the pieces to the pie being shown

stay with it, great trade
Great stuff, thanks for the honest down to earth video.
This is what I do for a living, although I know this already this is the best video I've seen.. Great job..
Yeah but if you're going to operate cold mode how can you tie in the same three wires that operates heat wouldn't you have to throw Orange in there to flip the reversing valve
David, this was great video. Thanks for the input!
This video saved my behind. You are the man!
Buddy excellent.... video you explain things very well,👍👏
You are a great teacher
Dude u r awesome at teaching I bet you could teach anything

I Think It’s Great That You Share Your Knowledge
I need to watch this video 4 times a year
David missed his calling. He should have been a school teacher. Lol excellent video.
Great information. I was able to rule out my thermostat as the problem. Tied the wires together to make my cooling system fire on and was able to determine that it was the main capacitor for my AC unit. $15 fix.
best block instruction on wiring a thermostat and how it works, thanks
Good job thanks love you videos keep them coming
Thanks man good description and examples!!
I’m trying to join the hvac industry and this helps a lot simply put together for me to understand without trying to go crazy into hvac terms thanks I agree picture save you also looking up what the wire & letter means cause it might not be the same color wire thanks
