I’ve been doing my own oil changes for over 40 years and I never though to use a zip lock bag over the oil filter. Great idea! Looking forward to not making a mess next time. Thanks!
I use the 2x Zip Lock bag method, 1 or 1/2 gallon works well. I break the oil filter seal, turn it about 1/2 turn, slip on the first bag and continue loosening until the oil starts to pour into the first bag. I wait about 30 seconds until the oil stops, slip off the first bag into a waiting shallow pan I have to the right of me. I slip on the 2nd bag, and then continue to unscrew the filter until it's off, wait about 10 seconds after the filter comes off to catch any of the oil in the oil filter mount. Drop that 2nd bag into the pan I have right next to me and done. Zero drips, no mess.
Just changed mine for the first time and I used an oven turkey bag. Worked flawlessly and the bag is heat rated so no worry of hot oil melting the bag, that will be my "go to" here on out
Thanks for the video! I own a 2019 RAM 1500 Rebel and have decided I am finally done paying $$$ for 3 hour oil changes at the dealership. I feel more confident now, nice tricks! Thank you!
You really shouldn’t make sure the oil filter area is “dry”. The gasket should be lubricated and technically you should prefill the oil filter before installing
Definitely good to fill the vertical downward facing oil filter but on my 2019 Ram it very difficult to do that. I’ve just been filling it 50-60% and lube gasket
Good idea on the gallon baggie... In the past, I would cut the sides of a plastic bag and drape that over the power steering rack (2012 ram) to prevent oil from degrading the boot and in general making a mess. I am in the middle of the first oil change on my 2022 (bought it new with 8 miles on odometer about 2 months ago), and noticed the new set up and the much much smaller oil filter.
I've got the same truck, thank you for the tip I'll try it next time. And great video production, you clearly spent time on it. A tip for you since you keep your stuff clean. Harbor freight sells an oil change funnel kit. It comes with screw in adapters for filler opening then the funnel locks into that. No need to worry about it flopping around when the weight of the oil is in it. Comes with lids to keep out dirt when not in use. I recommend
Big Ups to you on this video. I've changed the oil on older rams before but this was the first time on my 2019 1500 LL. That gallon big hack for the filter was on point. 2 drops spilled, which was me when I pulled the bag down. Awesome
great video. I've been making a mess changing the filter on my 2012 for years. My 2021 filter is actually easier to remove since it is much smaller. The bag idea works great. Only a few drops of oil on the garage floor.
After watching your video near the end of the video, I suggest that you add lubricating the "O"-ring on the oil filter with a little oil. This method should be used with ALL "O"-rings, they should be lubricated with the liquid that they are sealing. I liked the plastic bag trick, I will use it the next oil change. Thanks
Congrats on best video actually showing everything and perfectly clear and concise. I will use this method on my 22 1500 5.7 for sure. I wish I'd seen this before I bought a slightly different sized oil wrench ( 2'13/16 to 3 1/8) Hopefully it will fit. My first time changing oil on new truck.
Appreciate the comment man! Glad you enjoyed the video. There’s actually a few wrenches that will fit so you might be in luck. If you have any questions feel free to ask 👍🏼
Very instructional. Thank you for that. Not sure if you noticed but there's a lot of audio distortion every time you talk. It's in the low base frequencies. Some kind of flutter
I don't recommend this at all. The VRT lifters in the Hemi truck rely on a precise flow of oil for a short period of time to make them perform properly. A change in oil from SAE 5w20 to SAE 5w30 is huge! the viscosity could change from 5.6 cST to 9.3 cSt. That's a 66% increase. The thicker oil would restrict the flow of oil in the lifters to the point where you could blow the engine up. Keep your oil clean-change the filter every time. I researched oil several times and have used Pennzoil for 30 years. My last Hemi truck was a 2006 and it had 215000 on it in 2021 when I sold it.
@@KevinDePoy-g7cexactly this. VVTI’s can become ruined by changing fluid viscosities. Theres a reason why its recommended. This can even ruin the Cam Sensors & GallieWays
I use that Wix filter and have the same oil wrench... but I use Mobil1 0-W20. I'm only an inch taller than you and need that ladder and do NOT have it lifted. I still fit underneath it though. :)
@FirefighterBuell Great, thx👍🏼 Have you noted any reliable reports that replacing the factory drain plug with a magnetic one is definitely a smart thing to do?
I get a piece of extra wide aluminum heavy duty foil. Feed it up between the rack and the axle guided underneath the oil filter and when it drains it gets all over the aluminum foil. Swap the oil filter. Pull the aluminum foil out and you're all good
Nice Video!! Just wondering did you fill the oil filter with oil first or did you screw it on as is out the box? Some say you must do that some say it doesn't matter. Curious as to what you did Thanks

Ok, question about that drain plug valve. I looked it up on Amazon but I'm curious if the sway bar is in the way too much for it to fit properly. As it is, the sway bar makes it a pain in the ass to get a socket on without lowering the sway bar. Your thoughts?

The alphas are fantastic lights. I did it for pure aesthetic reasons considering they have chrome and my truck doesn’t have any chrome on it. Plus I was able to sell the alphas for $400 more than what I got the custom vlands for. The new Alpharex novas look amazing!
Do you run synthetic oil or conventional in the 5.7 hemi? I have a 2020 and the dealership says conventional is fine but everything online says you should only run full synthetic? I’m concerned I should switch to synthetic?
I personally do not think “most” high quality synthetic motor oils are too different in terms of engine wear and longevity. Everyone has a story on how they’ve used a specific oil for 300k miles. That being said the pennzoil platinum seemed to be most popular option for the hemi and a very budget friendly option so I went that route. If I did it again I’d choose the Platinum Pennzoil.
Use Amsoil if it’s too much money next best oil is the pennzoil ULTRA , next best oil in the market for sure. I use ultra on all my Toyotas and amsoil for my Ram limited, these hemis hate to idle so make sure to use the best oil for engine wear.
An oil that is testing out really well is Valvoline Advanced. Avoid Mobile 1 because the additive package is really quite weak. Pennsoil Ultra looks good too but a little harder to find for now

If you cut one of the corners off the bottom of the ziplock bag then use a zip tie to tie the opposite bottom corner off so it forms kind of a pastry bag/ funnel shape. Use another zip tie to zip tie the bag around the oil filter tightly. Slide a phillips head screw driver through the hole in the corner of the bag you cut out. Using a small hammer GENTLY TAP a hole in the bottom of the filter.Remove the screw driver and let the oil flow out of the filter, into the bag and out the hole into your oil tray. You'll have to loosen the oil filter in 2 or 3 steps without removing it completely for all the oil to drain. Then remove the filter completely and wipe off the mating surface on the engine block. Not one drop of oil spilled and no mess whatsoever. Changed my oil several times using this method and haven't spilled a drop.
I had plans to use it but Amazon sent the wrong one. I didn’t realize it till after the oil was drained and I tried to put it on but the threads didn’t line up.
@Firefighter Buell put one on if you haven't already. That crossmember will be a non issue. Drain right into an empty jug, put the cap on and you're done
The best one to use is the Fumoto # F106SX. It's shorter and won't interfere with the stabilizer bar. The nozzle comes out the side and can be rotated 360 degrees in any direction before tightening down.
Fund fact: 12-point wrenches and sockets will also work on square nuts and plugs. For instance, a 7/16" 12-point socket works great on the 3/8" square oil drain plugs on small engines.
I changed the oil in my truck exactly one time. I said f*** it after that. I'll go to jiffy lube. Which sucks because I kind of enjoy changing my own oil however this truck is a nightmare. No matter what you do you're going to make a huge mess.
Well for one the timer on the truck was up. And two, it was the first oil change since I got it from the dealer used. I dont know when they actually changed it or what they used so it was more piece of mind.
I use to always hand tighten but this truck and my car leak oil if I don't tighten the oil filter with whatever you can tighten it with safely without damaging the filter. Out of all the vehicles I've owned this oil filter location is horrible and the worst.
The oil catch can oil shouldn't be put back in to your truck. The purpose of the catch can is to remove crude and anything that shouldn't be cycling through your crank case. I'd empty the catch can into your oil catch next time. Otherwise you're throwing bad oil back in with the new oil change.
I think you’re mistaken on what’s going on in the video. That’s an empty container that the old oil is being dumped into. By no means would I put the old oil back in the truck.
I’ve been doing my own oil changes for over 40 years and I never though to use a zip lock bag over the oil filter. Great idea! Looking forward to not making a mess next time. Thanks!

Is that f104n valve the correct one for a hemi on 22 models? Thanks
I’m not sure of the correct one. I was sent the wrong one and I decided to do away with installing it.
The best one to use is the Fumoto # F106SX. It's shorter and won't interfere with the stabilizer bar. The nozzle comes out the side and can be rotated 360 degrees in any direction before tightening down.
Appreciate the tip!
@@garymeyer3294 I bought the EZ-drain valve. Same as the fumoto just different finish.
Used a 12 point wrench on a 6 point bolt.... Hmmm.
Thank you for the commentary 😊
Fund fact: 12-point wrenches and sockets will also work on square nuts and plugs. For instance, a 7/16" 12-point socket works great on the 3/8" square oil drain plugs on small engines.
What brand are the headlights?
Alpharex Nova
I changed the oil in my truck exactly one time. I said f*** it after that. I'll go to jiffy lube. Which sucks because I kind of enjoy changing my own oil however this truck is a nightmare. No matter what you do you're going to make a huge mess.
I agree it’s way harder than it needs to be. I think I’ve gotten pretty good at doing it as least messy as possible but it’s still a headache
Oil catch can is that stock part?
It’s aftermarket. Brand is Morimoto.
no crush washer?
No crush washer on these drain plugs, there’s a seal bonded to the plug.
Get a form a funnel to avoid all the oil going everywhere
❤
My 5th gen 5.7 calls for 0w-20.
My 2022 bighorn hemi says to use 0W20?
Do what your manual says

You got the tick yet?

Bag / filter ❤
Why MUSIC ?
Gotta set the mood
Thank you man
Anytime brother
Why did you change your oil at 4000 miles I just ran my ram over 8000 miles and still had life left in my oil change
Well for one the timer on the truck was up. And two, it was the first oil change since I got it from the dealer used. I dont know when they actually changed it or what they used so it was more piece of mind.
Hell yeah BSO boys
Sickkkk looking. Truck
Thank you brother!!
I use to always hand tighten but this truck and my car leak oil if I don't tighten the oil filter with whatever you can tighten it with safely without damaging the filter. Out of all the vehicles I've owned this oil filter location is horrible and the worst.
I totally agree with you!
Don't forget to check level. I didn't see you use the dipstick.
Well, checking a dipstick should definitely be a given. But if not then good reminder!
Cool 😎 !
What CAI is that??
Spectre
The oil catch can oil shouldn't be put back in to your truck. The purpose of the catch can is to remove crude and anything that shouldn't be cycling through your crank case.
I'd empty the catch can into your oil catch next time. Otherwise you're throwing bad oil back in with the new oil change.
I think you’re mistaken on what’s going on in the video. That’s an empty container that the old oil is being dumped into. By no means would I put the old oil back in the truck.
I believe it's supposed to be 7 qts of oil bot 5qts
I state 7 qts in the video
Anybody here punching out the bottom of the filter with an awl to then drain the oil?
