SCUMM VM on Nintendo 64 - Play classic point and click adventure games on your N64 console!

- ScummVM on Nintendo 64 is a program which allows you to run certain classic graphical adventure and role-playing games, provided you already have their data files and an everdrive 64 or other flashcart. The clever part about this: ScummVM just replaces the executables shipped with the games, allowing you to play them on systems for which they were never designed like N64! ScummVM is a complete rewrite of these games' executables and is not an emulator.

Thank you! I have to get into that and than i'll play Monkey Island on my CRT :D
I’d be all in if we could get these games on repro carts that are just as plug and play as any other N64 cart. No muss no fuss. That would be EPIC. Still, this is very cool.
Only one problem, ScummVM 1.6.0 for N64 wasn't designed to save progress on the Everdrive 64 and as such doesn't work, so it also likely won't save on repro carts. You'd need an old copier like the Mr. Backup Z64 or Doctor V64 instead. Someone would have to update the N64 port of ScummVM 1.6.0 to support repro cart-compatible saving.
Technically repro carts can be done in minutes, the problem is saving as mentioned above but if there was enough interest in getting scumm team to update n64 to take into account more people wanting to play then maybe they could make it happen
@@n64glennplant What about the Controller Pak, could you use that for saving? Any news about the SUMM VM Projekt for the N64? I'm curious if they made some improvements over the year.
@@Finalzero I think someone in the comments advised the project was abandoned now sadly
Ahhh give me Monkey Island 1 & 2 - I hope they eventually update it with that. Or even better…on Switch please 🤞🤞
MI 1 and 2 should run no problem, the problem is getting someone with the linux skills to make the compiled files to run on n64
I always look forward to these every Friday
Thanks, later than usual due to being in hospital but managed to get out in time to press publish haha
Very cool to know they will operate within the Everdrive,I've found the Wii to be the most capable and fluent console to run them on as the wiimotes work so well for a point and click.
Yeah I think so too
I was also one of those PC owner kids playing Sierra and Lucasarts adventure games when all the other kids were playing Mario or Sonic.
Much prefer guybrush to sonic even to this day 😊
Woah! Pretty cool that some of these games run as well as they do.
I'm a huge fan of point and click games. I grew up playing games like Monkey Island II: LeChuck's Revenge, Day Of The Tentacle, and Sam & Max Hit The Road. The same group of devs got together not too long ago and made a new game in that classic style; Thimbleweed Park. Great game and great callback to those originals. Been playing with ScummVM on my Android for a while now. Currently playing through Day Of The Tentacle again. I actually cast my screen to my Chromecast and use a USB mouse to play it.
I feel like this video is gonna cause a resurgence in SCUMMVM and I'm perfectly okay with that.
Hope so!!!
@@n64glennplantit certainly did for me because I'm surprised by the number of games that can run in ScummVM
so happy to see that you have done more videos latelly, i was genuenlly hoping for your return! 😅
Oh yeah been back for months now, also been live streaming gauntlet legends to completion this past week
Wow, this is such a crazy idea and it seems to look quite good already. I love these games but I don’t own an N64 so I probably won’t be trying this any time soon, although I will be trying all these on PC for sure.
Definitely a big Scumm fan. Played the absolute F out of Monkey Island, Full Throttle and Day of the Tentacle way back when. Oh and Indiana Jones of course. Lately I've also been trying to get into Loom but I think I need a bit more time with that one before I can really start to appreciate it. I was also pleasantly surprised that I didn't really know the games you showcased here all that well. I moved Flight of the Amazon Queen up higher on my to play list as a result. Awesome video as always, thanks!
FOTAQ is really quirky, short and quick blast to play
This was a pleasant surprise. I've been rediscovering SCUMM adventure games lately, namely the first Broken Sword [which of course was developed after Beneath A Steel Sky]. I've grown up with games like these, Day of the Tentacle, and a good number of others.
Yeah there’s some amazing ones for sure! York is the city where revolution have always been based it’s about 40 minutes from me I know exactly where they are based
I love hearing about N64-stuff I wasn't familiar with.
That’s always an aim here to see some weird stuff it can do. I have another one that for years I’ve been trying to do but I need something that’s nearly impossible to get but one day I will but until then it’s a secret h
@@n64glennplant the infamous expansion cd pack I'm thinking ;)
I've wanted to play again
Beneath a the steel sky, for years now, so this is really exciting stuff here. Let's hope Monkey Island games get ported also, sooner or later..
Yeah MI are wonderful, id love HOOK too did you ever play that one?
For Christmas one year I was given a LucasArts collection set with: Monkey Island Madness, The Dig, Full Throttle, dark forces, Afterlife and one more I can’t remember. But I played all those games until the discs finally gave up on me lol
What a great gift that was
Awesome Glenn! I love point and click and will look into this. Love your videos!
Thanks john I appreciate that
Flight of the Amazon Queen just baffled me as a kid. I was expecting a game like Fate of Atlantis but what I got was something that was just all over the place tone wise.
I remember the game feeling more like a kids cartoon than a mature point and click like I wanted. I really should finish it.
And my god, The Dig. I know it's a very uneven game and was WAY too ambitious for its own good, but that game as a kid just blew my mind with its dark themes and mature writing.
The dig is epic but I’d be amazed if they could ever get that working, same as broken sword unless someone could do some serious compression of the videos and voice work
@@n64glennplant Would you need to compress the video and voices if it was on an everdrive? I mean, the video for RE2 was only compressed to save space? Or am I totally wrong haha
So, N64 was indeed capable of some much more
Indeed!
This further cements the N64 as my favorite console, it seems like it could tackle anything with enough effort. I might look into getting an N64 mouse, would definitely be worth it for these games, I wonder how well Sam & Max would play.
I wish I could get an n64 mouse
@@n64glennplant I'll definitely keep my eyes peeled for one. I haven't played most of the SCUMM games, but I'd definitely be more inclined to play them on my N64. I don't think the idea of playing these games on N64 will ever stop being cool.
Are they expensive?
@@darkjapan $175-$200 for a used one
I remember playing beneath a steel sky and was more confused with the game, years later I got some progress. Lure of the Temptress is a pretty interesting adventure where I succed more on progress. Both games I played on my pc🙂
Have you played the new beyond a steel sky yet?
Thanks so much for covering this. I known about this for some time but no one ever talks about it. Now that I know it's 64 mouse compatible it's a no-brainer.
Yeah and also there’s very little footage of it actually working on n64 online so hoping to spread awareness
Give me Putt-Putt Joins the Parade any day, since I been wanting to play it on my N64 using the ScummVM port.
Playing Day of the Tentacle, Indiana Jones: Fate of Atlantis, or The Dig on the n64 would be pretty neat. But since all three exploited the CD's storage advantage, I am neither expecting N64 conversions or even really desiring them.
I’m sure they all had floppy versions too?
I think you're correct (minus The Dig); I had not considered those. I only played Power PC (Mac) versions. I assume the originals had no voice overs. So then, I guess not much would be sacrificed [Da!@ you Nintendo for not going with CDs].
HUMONGOUS ENTERTAINMENT FOREVER!!!
I tried some of the smaller Humongous Entertainment games like Putt-Putt and Pep's Balloon-O-Rama, Dog on a Stick, Pajama Sam's Sock Works and Lost & Found in ScummVM 1.6.0 for N64 and sadly they don't work with the scumm engine executable.
Shame
So lucky to have the N64 mouse :')
Very
I've never heard of this games before.
In for a treat then
"Very rare n64 mouse"
Say what now? And just when I thought I knew all the peripherals for this thing
Yeah and no manufacturers make third party ones either so triple digits to get one even if you can find one
@@n64glennplant yeah I'll pass lol. I assume it was probably for the N64DD in Japan?
Those 2d assets look really sharp. More than I remember on n64.
Cool to know
I think the best scumm console port has to be the Wii, it works pretty well with the Wii mote
Yeah that’s a perfect input device
I dabbled with ScummVM a long time ago on my Mac. I was able to import my copy of Indiana Jone and the Fate of Atlantis into it and have it run. Unfortunately, I was unable to do the same with my Macintosh copy of The Dig.
Worth revisiting as the latest version has mega high compatibility
Wow, thats great.
Cool hey 😄
These look cool man! I’m curious, have you ever played “Sanitarium” for the PC? It’s an AWESOME point and click game. I highly recommend it.
Yeah love that one…you ever play samorost?
@@n64glennplant no I haven’t. I will definitely look it up now though and try to get a look at the gameplay. Thanks for always bringing us the classics and the more obscure games of the past. You’re the man!
Sadly, it seems that the source code for the N64 package of ScummVM has been completely lost to time. This means that anyone who'd wish to update N64 ScummVM would basically have to start from scratch.
Since i don't have an everdrive, i would prefer the GameCube version, but that's even older (1.5), so i guess i'll have to stick with the Wii version.
Wii version is better anyway so no need to play these if you have that
Planes are fun
Always!
Woooohooo!
nice logo! :)
Huch pretty interesting topic, Glenn😃
always trying to find the weird and wonderful stuff for n64 :)
Out of curiosity, what's your favorite point and click adventure game? Also are there any N64 officially licensed point and click games?
Probably proven sword 1 and no
@@n64glennplant thanks! I'll have to give Proven Sword 1 a look!
I have to be honest with you Glen me and my brother we played 90s PC games back in the day we use to play where in the world is Carmon sandeago
its funny because thats one which I always wanted to try and never got around to - I love these games though, hook was another one I loved
@@n64glennplant that is interesting to say the least Glen what games on the PC have you played
@@stewartmatthews1551 I was a big AOE fan, full throttle, blade runner, broken sword, Sam n max, x wing series etc
@@n64glennplant oh nice I do remember watching my brother playing mech worrier 2 that game was very ground breaking for me and my brother back then we still talk about
Scummvm never worked too well for my N64 compare to my 3ds but it would been nice to play The legend of Kyrandia games on it and have Roland mt 32 emulation lol but hay ill give it a try again using my ever 64 drive
Yeah there’s also an update video I need to do as there’s a whole load more games patched to work on n64
@@n64glennplant I tried the mt32 emulation for n64 with scummvm (with followed instructions and even tested on my 3ds) and dont seem to work at all so hay at least the game works with crappy Adlib emulation lol but at least the 3ds sounded better lol
for Halloween 2022 you should make a video on resident evil n64 or crow 64
Already reviewed resident evil
Is BASS the voiced or text version?
Floppy version
Wonder if this would work with emulator
Should do! But I’d also question why you’d use an emulator instead of just getting the native version of scummvm for the system you would run the emulator on?
Point and click are a chore when you have ADHD
I can imagine! My Asperger’s makes me want to ignore all npc and just get on with puzzles 😅
Holy cow! $250 for the stupid mouse, that's nuts! This is really cool though. Hope to get an everdrive sometime soon.
Yeah and no third party manufacturers even though they’d be super easy to make
@@n64glennplant it looks like the cheapest option is there's a SNES to N64 adapter that works with the SNES mouse
I bought the 64dd Randnet set in 2003 for $400 (which I had to sell a few years later). It is now a gazillion dollars ($1,000 or more).
@@brandonginsburg3120 yeah I know it’s crazy right. Sad how much these things cost at the moment
