Hey John, I'm sure you're aware by now but anyone reading the comments may find this useful. You can keep the midi as is and just bounce 'in realtime'.
As long time music teacher, conductor and shakuhachi player, I am so grateful for what you have shown here. I now have an amazing arsenal with which to create the coolest pieces. Thank you for making this iPad MIDI hook up clear. YES!
With the New Auto Sampling Function in Logic 10.5 you can sample your favorite sounds directly and automaticly into the logic sampler with all the layers and details that you want. I sampled my go to sounds from the moog model D - ipad app and use them in my logic projects. The same with my favorite FunkBox Kits.
so essentially you can make a synth from any of your ios apps correct ?

I tried to do this but I couldn't get it to work in Catalina. Unless I'm mistaken, it seems as if they blocked the feature.
Doggone, I have literally been trying to find a way to do this for over a year! I use KORG Module with its rich warm sounds, but wanted to use GarageBand on the new MAC I bought just for this purpose. I tried interfaces and just about everything I could think of, and all I needed to do was change a setting on the MAC??!! It works fantastic, and I am so grateful to your for sharing this!!

Ableton has a resample feature that records any incoming audio. Cubase too if you need audio as you play

Make sure you have "IDAM MIDI HOST" selected for midi input and output in the Mini Moog App Settings.

I’ve been using my iPad to record into Logic, Reason ; and Studio 3, but I’ve been going in through audio interface. I’m going to see about purchasing this device so that I don’t have to carry my audio interface with me everywhere. Thanks John Mike you’re the man brother. Hi ,ive got a great DX7 type synth (fm player 2) on my iPad so can I record my midi , edit it then turn it into audio . That would be so cool . I’m a guitar player first so my keyboard skills are zero but I know what chords etc I need to play but they need tidying up after. Thank you for this helpful video

I am able to get the iPad connected to logic and hear the instrument with the app keyboard, but when I connect the iPad as a midi device, my midi keyboard is not controlling the app. I’ve seen other people here with the same problem. Can you go into more detail about getting the midi keyboard to control the app? Thanks!

What if the audio is so loud it is clipping? It does not look like there is a way to turn the iOS device audio down...the volume buttons dont work in this mode!!

Toward the end of your video, you mentioned that we can also output MIDI from the iPad to Logic Pro. How do we do this?

Hi, if you’re using the latest version of Logic Pro try this.
1. Choose Software Instrument
2. Use: An external MIDI or USB Device
3. Audio Input: Input 1 + 2
4. MIDI Destination: iPad - 2
5. Create
You can change MIDI channel settings by clicking on the music icon at the top left.
Man. Omg. Thank you. I was doing old complications trying to convert to midi controls and run in sound board. Why didn’t Apple boost this feature?!?!?
Great informative video sir!!! however, I do not get any sound during playback once I stop recording. I can hear everything as I’m recording it, but that’s it. Maybe there’s a setting that I need to fix? I don’t even see the meters moving when it’s on playback. Very strange :(

i do this but the audio comes out really distorted - i have even tried to reduce the buffer size. any ideas on why it is not working? (i have the m1 macbook air).
(it works for a little bit sometimes. maybe I think it's if I leave the phone idle it becomes distorted when I try playing it after a while.)

How can I use my iPhone as a mic to record audio into logic?
I do not have a regular mic at the moment and I using a Voice Recording app "called Voice Record 7" and want to record sound from my iPhone into logic with this app
I try to set it up as you said but I do not get any green level signal on my Logic audio track
Make the output of the midi channel coming from the ipad in logic's mixer bus 1 then open a new audio track make the new audio channel's input bus 1 now push record and MAGIC you have recorded your iPad apps inside of logic.If you want to use multiple apps at once in the same session at the same time without bouncing the tracks each time, check out there 2 options Studiomux which is the best I have found it lets you use your ipad instruments and effects on your mac like you would in audiobus or AUM. Studiomux turns your iPad into a mini DSP server kind of like universal audio does. I use Studiomux all the time and it's super stable, it also has a VST & Audio unit plugin you can insert in any DAW like Ableton or Reaper. There is also Musicio but I haven't had enough time to really work with musicio yet.

John Mike check out studiomux if you can it let’s you have multiple iOS apps playing in your DAW from the iPad it is easy to setup and let’s you use the unique apps and plugins from iOS inside your desktop DAW. I’ll make a video tonight showing how studiomux works. As for AUM I use AUM for my synth rig when playing live it is a quick and easy way to work with multiple synths live. Hi, do you know why it doesn't record for me? I made sure all the input and everything is correct and I can hear the sounds on my mac when I play it on my laptop and Logic is picking it up. It records the audio track but it doesn't record on the midi track.

This doesn’t work for me. When I connect my iPad it shows up and allows me to enable it but in Midi Studio it appears as a white plug, not a midi device. When I attempt to capture midi in Logic, I can hear the ipad instrument but no midi is flowing. Anyone have advice?

Hey John ! Absolutely love all of your videos and tips. I'm trying this IDAM setup and I can't seem to get my midi keyboard to control the apps on my phone. I've tried with a USB hub and also plugged straight into my MacBook. Is there an extra step I'm maybe missing ?
It depends on what OS you have running on the mac...if it’s too old like before El Capitan then it won’t work...if that’s not your issue then you need to look in your audio midi setup and click enable like I show in the video
I’m having exactly the same problem. I use Ableton and all this audio midi setup. I can hear and record sounds if I play the notes directly on the iPad but if I play on my MIDI controller (I’ve a Launchkey Mini), the controller cannot control the app on the iPad :(

Help. I cant control the ipad with my keyboard. That's the only issue. Is it because Im using focusrite solo as my interface? I followed all the steps carefully and also tried any possible ways. But still, it didn't work.
I also tried connecting my keyboard directly to the laptop via usb. But same thing, I cant control the ipad

But one question... any reason after enabling the iPad as an audio device (and getting confirmation message indicating '..permits sending and receiving MIDI) the device doesn't show up in the midi studio..like the way yours does at 2:03? When I'm in LPX, I can see the iPad as an audio i/o device but not as an option for an external midi output. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated.

I've tried recording it through quicktime player and it worked. it captured the audio perfectly but i couldn't hear my game so plugged my headphone on my ipad and the audio recorded was muted when i tried to watch the new recorded game. please help

I don’t think they are...it doesn’t really slave the app to logic...
About to take this (iPad 3) To the shop I’ve had my iPad sitting on ice for the last past almost 2 1/2 years on the device , I do is make sequences using #Retronyms , #iMPC and a few others like #beatMaker3 “but this joker is about to go back to work ....can’t wait to use this feature - again Thank you so much Brother you are always dropping gems 💎 “bless you man”

Hi John, would this work in the other direction - setting the iPhone or iPad as an output? I’ve been trying to get my sound card or mixer output to play directly through my iOS device for live-streams (DJ set for example) and I do everything right except it doesn’t work. Always uses built in mic

I tried these steps exactly John, but even though I can hear my ios synth in logic it won’t record any midi? I noticed in your logic channel strip it shows “external 1” as a button but in mine it doesn’t. Any idea why?

It’s not an interface...you just use the sync cable that came with your iPhone or iPad

The midi controller is connected to your computer...your iPad is connected to the computer...the midi data is sent from the controller through the computer to the iPad

I played around with IDAM for the last several hours. Okay, I played with it, on and off, over the course of a year. In the end, it's too impractical. I'm better off just recording a loop, or maybe a series of them, in the app, and then transfer them to Logic and continue; much, much faster than the IDAM setup. There are loads of steps, but the dealbreaker for me was the fact that I can't convert the track to an audio file. I even tried routing the iPad's output to an audio track to record there, but the timing is off enough that I have to be precise when I tap the play button on the app in time to record a perfect loop. Argh!
