  • Thanks to @Issiewizzie for pointing this out! The easiest and most reliable way to use your iPhone or iPad with Logic Pro X (or any other Mac DAW) is to use the newest version of IDAM. In this video we take a look at how it works and how to use it.

    Really brilliant, Sir and thank you very much for your help, but I really do go back to your old “Connecting Logic Pro X to iPhone via Bluetooth MIDI” etc. Let me explain: IDAM is perfect, but it occupies the Lightning port of my iPad, and I need the Lightning port to connect my guitar (for example, to play synthesizers via MIDI Guitar and AUM). Then , what interests me is a Bluetooth or Wirelessly connection between my iOS system and Logic Pro X. Im thinking of connecting two iOS via BT beetwen and one of them linked through IDAM with the MAC. P. Exmple. .. ?
    Thank you so much for your help, I just got started on Logic Pro AND you are the most advanced experimenter. Salute

    The second the mouse is involve in entering notes the score is steered to almost exactly the same place . Touch however and a timeline is VASTLY a more granular . The computer is going right back . It’s a boat anchor . That’s why third party content is so popular on Logic . 😤👽

    Nicely done, and very helpful. The other thing I’d like to is use audio FX on the iPad as effects in Logic. I’ve seen some inklings of that on YT, but I wonder what’s the latest approach, given the idam evolution. Thanks for any comments or links.

    • @LogicProLife
      @LogicProLife  6 лет назад

      +David Hallowell which effects would you like to use? IDAM doesn’t do multi-track so it won’t be able to help with running effects but there are a few other solutions. I find I want to use the iOS instruments that I don’t have anywhere else but I haven’t found effects that I am dying to use.

    • @davidhallowell3457
      @davidhallowell3457 6 лет назад

      One of the guitar effects packs (ToneStack, Amplitube, etc) would be an example. No need to do this while tracking - just as added resource during Logic Pro mixing sessions. There may be some other special reverb, delay, or granular synth effects that could be handy as well. I could deal with a little latency.
      Thanks again for taking a look at the latest options.

    Great videos! So does this include "tempo sync"... (for delays etc.. in the app's presets... locked to Logic? And will Logic transport start iOS apps in time... so drums will be in time when we record the audio? This seems great! Although how does Ableton Link work? That looks so seemless ALREADY... and can't understand how Apple hasn't given us even that yet for Logic Pro X. I wouldn't mind recording my audio with the headphone out cable... if only the apps were "synced" completely. Thanks!

  • @musicproductionvideos5019

    I've been testing this now too. I'm on 10.12.2 and I don't have the options for the midi settings in "properties" like yours shows. Only the "ports" options. What Mac OS are you on? So far these apps are the ones I have... that are able to use IDAM. Annimoog / Geoshred /Sunrizer / Patterning. I got the midi to Garageband as you did... but there seems to be no setting for IDAM yet... or a way to "receive" Midi Clock. Only send. So I could not get it to sync the timelines or delay fx etc. Would be fantastic to get the Smart Strings in sync etc! I'm also trying to get iMaschine & iMPC to work but no luck yet. I did use the HP out cable to record audio as you did also... but it did work with the Lightning cable too. Thanks for you help!

    Helpful video, thank you.
    IDAM makes it easy to bring iOS audio and midi IN to macOS and Logic, but if I simply plug in my usb C ipad to a Mac, it shows up as 2 inputs, 0 outputs.
    I must be missing something…but I can’t seem to easily send and receive audio and midi back and forth from iPad to and from Mac.
    Thanks for any tips to reveal my blind spot.

    • @LogicProLife

      You can’t send audio to the iPad. It can only send audio to your computer. Otherwise, once connected the MIDI should be set to go back and forth.

      @@LogicProLife Thanks. I see that’s true when the iPad is connected to a host. If I plug an audio interface into the iPad, then it will record and process audio, but I guess that’s because it is the host.
      Many other usb audio devices handle inputs and outs while plugged into a host, but I think you are clarifying that iOS devices only see audio inputs when *they* are the host.
      Is that a reasonable takeaway?
      Thanks again.

      When you use an audio interface directly with an iPad it has both I/O. But when using the IDAM protocol to connect an iPad to a Mac then it’s only audio from the iPad into the computer.

      +Velanche Stewart you can record the audio output of the iOS device into an audio track as well. Plus you can use multiple iOS instruments simultaneously and not just one at a time.

      Try it at 48kHz. Also make sure your buffer size isn’t set too low. If neither thing fixes it then it could be other things like updating OSX, iOS, or the apps. It’s tricky because there are very many variables and it seems like not every developer is keeping things up to date.

    • @pixelpunishersound
      @pixelpunishersound 3 года назад

      @@LogicProLife I set it to 48kHz and the buffer was at 256 still nothing, But I did notice that the static seems to be an echo of the notes that was played. If I play 4 notes I'll hear the distortion with the static as I play the note then 1 second later I'd hear the same nono effects on anything. I'm working a fresh project and following your video.

But I'm assuming you clicked on the 3rd area under settings and went to "Utilities" and selected External Instrument. It was the only thing I could not completely verify while following along.

    I revisited IDAM tonight, working with it for about a couple of hours. The shortcomings are pronounced: for instance, I'm wanting to use the Egoist iOS app, and I tried things several different ways. I recorded a test loop in MIDI, but I can't convert the track to audio so that I can have something once the iPad is disconnected. Also, when I set up an instrument track and then record its output to a separate audio track, there's a slight latency gap that keeps the track from being a perfect loop. Do you have suggestions for these?

    • @LogicProLife
      @LogicProLife  5 лет назад

      When I use IDAM in an External Instrument plugin on an Instrument track with a low buffer size it seems to have a very workable latency. When I’m ready to detach the iPad I solo the track, bounce the project, import that into a new track, and then verify alignment visually. Hope this helps.

    • @velanche
      @velanche 5 лет назад

      @@LogicProLife Thanks for that. After playing with it a few times, I found that as long as the tempo on my iPad is the same as Logic, If the audio is slightly off, It's good enough to move and trim until the loop is tight. I"m still debating if it's gonna be useful, but it's not as onerous as it may appear, but IDAM still could use some improvements.

      I’m not playing MIDI on the iPad. The MIDI comes from my normal USB controller attached to my Logic computer and is sent to the iPad. If you want a good controller on the iPad to control Logic then skip all of this and use the dedicated Logic App.

    • @evantagebinks1816

      Sort of a similar thing happened to me. I got it to work using Garageband on my iPhone 7, and Logic Pro X on my Mac. Then I switched to the app on my iPhone to Korg's Animoog. Immediately stopped outputting audio, even when I switched back to Garageband. I know that they have a 'midi expansion pack for an additional $3.99, but it says that is just to enable MIDI output so I can use my iPhone as a midi controller.

      Elliot, maybe you can tell me a few specs.
      My iMac is from 2010. Is yours about as old, or newer? I got 16 gigs ram recently. Logic Pro X seems to work fine for the most part, but it sometimes will randomly crash, usually when I push it hard.
      Only two apps I've tried using this demo is animoog & Garageband.
      My iMac OS is High Sierra 10.13.4. Did your upgrade help?
      My iPhone 7's OS is up to date.

      The only other hardware I've got attached to my iMac is a M-Audio Code 49 that is plugged into a USB splitter, then into the Mac, and a Focusrite 2i2, which is also on that same splitter into my Mac.
      The M-Audio Code 49 is set up as using Mackie Mixer protocol, as per M-Audio's instructions for Logic Pro X.
      Turning off the M-Audio Code 49 doesn't seem to help.
