I watched a tutorial on tabs to start a shawl. She said to put a pin/marker on the cast on stitches so that when you come back to pick up those stitches they are easy to find. It works great.
In adding to your response to the question about a shawl pattern to knit: I remember in the past how you have said how you like to combine relaxing sections with sections that might be more challenging. I knit your Ramble shawl when it was a newer pattern. It was an easy project to start, starting with easy garter stitch stripes, alternating colors. Then, I learned such important skills in the brioche section: 2-color brioche, & L leaning & R leaning decreases. (Also, how to fix my brioche mistakes.) Yes, it was challenging, but it was a skill I have used in other knitting projects. So worth learning something new in a project!!
New subscriber/former lurker here! You are truly a ray of sunshine every week! Your cheerfulness, positivity and blonde-ness put me in mind of Dolly Parton--like, you are the knitting version of her without the Southern accent and...other bits! Love your knitting and insight! Thanks for sharing with us.
I love your podcast! You're so darling and calming! You're really encouraging. I also love your tutorials, they are clear and concise. Thanks so much for your time❤
I’m so happy you kept this weekly vlog going!! I learn so many helpful tips and add another one of your patterns to my queue with almost every episode. Love!
As a newer knitter i find your question and answer sessions to be so informative and helpful. I’m learning both by knitting and following you. The birds of a feather shawl it gorgeous and on my list. Thank you for sharing your endless knowledge and smile weekly.
Thank you for these weekly videos! I look forward to them every week. I listen to them on my drive to work and then return to watch for all the demonstrations and show and tells. You’re such an inspiration to me. I’m almost done with the Honey Moss shawl. It’ll be ready for our CA fall!
I really enjoy watching you except I can’t get any knitting done because I’m so mesmerized by what you’re saying. I’m not into spinning but you make it sound so exciting. I do look forward to watching you on Fridays.
Not sure where to post a question but on the note of one skein shawls. I absolutely loved knitting the amazing slipstravaganza by stephen west last year. As a newer not so fast knitter and busy working mom it took 7 months to knit...the small version! Absolutely loved it...however definitely looking to keep knitting smaller more manageable projects for the next little while. Which one skein shawls would you recommend?
Thank you so much for making videos each week. I so look forward to them, your spirt and attitude is so bright and wonderful! I have been working on your comfort fade cardi, and it is such a joy!
I love your patterns and podcast. Can you show me how you wear Plumpy (I'm working on it myself)? Also, how do you block a brioche shawl? I tend to block shawls quite aggressively, but hear that you shouldn't for a brioche.
I just watched this episode last night where you talked about the tab cast on. And it felt like all night I was having a fever dream about all different size and colors of tab cast ons but I couldn't get past picking up the stitches around it. I'd have a new tab, pick up the stitches and suddenly I'm on a new tab... it was crazy.... anyway, I think I want to cast on one of your shawls, hahaha 🤣
I’m an intermediate knitter and am enjoying and learning so much from these episodes. Please keep showing off your spinning. It’s neat to hear what you are experimenting with.
For the knitter questioning blocking their mohair project, you can always wash and block a knitted swatch to see exactly how your particular yarns behave together. I find it gives great peace of mind to know how it’s going to work before plunging my whole finished project into a wash bath.
I began to sell crochet to buy more yarn too!!Wait wait! You're in Maine - it's almost Fall. Oh I sure hope you will grace of with beautiful foliage as the leaves change. It's always been my dream to visit Maine in the middle of Fall. I can only imagine the beauty of the 🍁 Maple leaves 😍
Cabtastic! Thank you, Andrea, for answering my question! I do get that “mountain” effect where the tab is, so I think I will try to knit a bit looser around my tab cast-on and see if that makes a difference. Maybe that will let it relax.
Thank you so much for these episodes! I watch them every week! And I just wanted to say that I have had the yarn for birds of a feather in your original colourway (I think it’s called “Crybaby”) my stash for a year and just haven’t found the time to knit it but seeing you wrap yours has shot it up to the top of my queue! So gorgeous! Thank you for all you do!!
The one she mentions is by Cocoknits, but you can find very similar items on Amazon at a fraction of the price. It's basically a pop-up mesh sweater dryer, kind of Pringle shaped like she said 😊
I like to use Judy’s magic cast on as a provisional cast on for the start of a garter tab. Using a provisional cast on makes it less lumpy than picking up sts from a regular cast on edge.
You are so adorable, smart and creative. I always learn something every time I watch! Can’t wait to see your plied yarn project! Thanks for this great content!
Hi Diane! I would recommend The Weekender, or So Faded. I also have a great wardrobe staple sweater coming out this fall that is very beginner friendly :)
Can you please tell us what Hedgehog yarns and colors are in the Birds of a Feather shawl? One of them looks like a faint blue color and the other a speckled one. They are beautiful and I would love to knit this!
I love these videos. Thank you so much for taking the time to answer all our questions. I feel like i have learned so much from these videos --and i consider myself a seasoned knitter. I think my favorite part is seeing your outfits and knitwear every week. I love all your patterns and seeing you wear them is inspiring me to knit them!
I just want to acknowledge your wise, inspirational and joyous being Andrea. I'm so grateful and constantly amazed by your deep insight and broad explorations on all the topics you cover. Thank you for all the sharing. I've always enjoyed knitting your patterns as well as wearing them - am about to start Evenfall. Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I really enjoy your videos and knitting sweaters you design. I also enjoy sewing and was wondering if you could share what pattern you used for the overalls you're wearing? Thanks :-)
In my experience, warm to hot water can cause indie-dyed yarn to bleed. I've dyed my own yarn with commercial acid dyes for years and have learned to block with lukewarm to cold water. But, I tend to work with very saturated colors.
I've never had that issue, but it's always good to use your swatch to see if it will be problem! And cool water is always a great way to go if it has been an issue in the past :)
I love everything you are wearing...I just love you! Your talent is amazing. Love Maine and our New England home!!! 🤗💚💛💜💕🍁I must add...all of Elizabeth Gilbert's books, including "Big Magic"...are phenomenal.💜I love it when you're chatty and the video lasts longer. Great video. Thank you, Andrea.
Hello there, I do really enjoy watching your "I knit if I want to" channel. I have a question for tubular bind off. I have knit the Illuminate sweater and learnt the cast on and it looks great and is stretchy. However, I have not mastered the tubular bind off, it looks ok but it is not stretchy. I always feels like a string is pulled through all my stitches and holding them really tight with not much give. Do you have any tips, tricks I could try? Thanks.
Hello! It sounds like you are pulling the yarn too tight when doing the kitchener stitch (super common). Try keeping it a bit looser, and do a stretch test - stretching the ribbing to check for flexibility- every couple of inches to make sure it isn't too tight.
Comment about combining continental and english style knitting. Just tried it and with my knitting there is a visible difference. Looser continental and in general when I knit a continental designer's pattern I know my needle size will go up one or 2 sizes to meet gauge.
Andrea, I love listening to your “I’ll knit if I want to” episodes! Thank you for sharing yourself with us! 😊. I just recently finished the Weekender and will be casting on the Throwover as soon as my yarn gets delivered next week.
Hi Andrea I am new !listening to your podcast and I am really enjoy:ing your upbeat .attitude , I am going to knit the mystery knit along with Stephen West beginning in October. COuld you please suggest a good fingering weight yarn that would work for this project.? I was unable to purchase a kit because it was sold out,, l willI need 5 different colors preferentially four solid colors and one pop of color .110 gram of each, I was hopping for gray with burgundy,. Thank you. ,Fran
Hi, thanks for these informative and fun videos! I often see pictures of finished shawls on Ravelry where they are hangning on a clothe line. Is this for the purpose of getting the full object in there or is it a way of blocking it? Would you recommend that for blocking a shawl? Thanks :)
I think you'd be better off blocking them flat, because on the clothes line as the water drips out, being heavy it's going to pull the long edge all out of shape.
Hi there! I block everything laying flat. Hanging them up would cause stretching and distortion. I believe they are hung up dry like that so you can see the full shawl :)
Kia Ora from New Zealand. Just finishing my Shifty sweater, which I've done in the exact same Spincyle colors as you Andrea (we only have one shop in NZ selling Spincycle which is located in the North Island so wanted to stay with tried and true colors) Anyways, the Spincycle label says cold wash unless using high contrast colors in which case steam block. Did you use the blocking technique you described in episode 26 for your Shifty sweater using these same Spincycle colors as mine? (Also do you use a wool wash) Thanks. Glenda Barber
I have always wet blocked my Spincycle yarns, and have not had any issues with bleeding. You can always test it by blocking your swatch the same way you plan to block your sweater!
Lovely and informative as always. I can't wait for the new cardi pattern. I'm just on the last four sections of Satellite. I'm so looking forward to the bind off, you say it's encouraging as it gets bigger. Hmm. I'm wondering are there any of your shawl patterns that go from long rows to shorter? I think that would suit my psychology better. But it's fine really... grr. 😬😂
Stephen West has one of his honeycomb shawls that starts big and then ends small. I usually don’t gauge swatch shawls though so I prefer to start small and then decide when I want to end it. 🙃
@@5millionfireflies Thanks. I have those patterns in my library but hadn't read them yet. I'm such a monogamous knitter I dare not even look at another beauty until I've finished one.
