The scene where Mister separated Nettie and Celie was very real to those two actresses. The actress who played Celie wore padding to protect her from the force of her bottom hitting the stairs, but because of the brutality of the scene, the padding slipped into a position where she wasn't protected at all. Also, Steven Spielberg knew the two actresses were as close as sisters on the set. He told them "For this scene, whatever you do, do not let Danny separate you two. Do whatever you can to stay together, but do not let him separate you." The fact that Danny managed to break them apart was emotionally traumatic for them, so those tears and that emotion were very real. It gets me every time. Also, the actress who played Nettie is from Ghana and is (or was) an African Princess. Akosua Busia's father was Kofi Abrefa Busia and he was the Prime Minister of the Republic of Ghana and a prince of the Royal Family of Wenchi. She was married to the director John Singleton too.
I would ferociously argue "God is Tryin' to Tell You Somethin''" in this movie is one of the greatest moments in the history of music. It doesn't get the attention or appreciation it deserves.
She told him “until you do right by me everything you think about…” gon be f’ed up. His whole life then falls apart so he tried to do right by her at the end. But f him still

"I think it pisses God off when you walk by the color purple in a field and don't notice it." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Oprah Winfrey. Casting Notes Fact: Mistakenly reported as Whoopi Goldberg's debut. However her first movie was Citizen (1982). What Script Fact: At the dinner scene, Oprah Winfrey ad-libbed all her lines when she was talking to Whoopi Goldberg. After the scene, Goldberg walked over to Winfrey, gave her a hug, and told her that she has now become an actress. Emotion Over Experience Fact: Before production, Steven Spielberg felt very insecure about being director of the film. Spielberg felt that his knowledge of the deep South was inadequate and that the film should've been directed by someone who could've at least related to the struggles faced by many blacks living in the old south. Producer Quincy Jones then convinced Spielberg to take the role as director of the film, because of the excellent emotional E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial (1982) direction out of the alien character.
Unfortunately, I will miss the premiere. Someone is premiering Glory (1989) at the same time. I will catch this movie later! Go in Peace and Walk with God. 😎 👍
Now we see why Shugs daddy was so upset with her, she stopped singing in the church and sang for the world, also see why Mister fell in love with her singing in the church, even got his daddy to buy him land near that church to be near her, but lost her to the world.

And some people may grow up in super strict homes. And then some, like Jay, probably just spent their time outside and not watching tv.

And he's obviously never seen a Marx Brothers movie or else he'd know Groucho, Harpo, and Chico. Harpo Marx could make anyone laugh without a single word and being an excellent musician could also wow listeners.
I LOVE seeing a brother experience this movie for the first time. Me and my mom bonded over this movie and it reflected a lot of her experiences growing up as a black woman in the deep south, as well as my grandmother's. Such an important film. I will always have massive amounts of respect for Spielberg bringing this to life the way he did.
Oprah was actually at a "fat farm" when she got the call that she got the part and she left immediately because they told her if she loses one pound she could lose the role.
Being Black in these times was hard but being a Black woman was extremely difficult……zero respect especially from Black men. “Everything done to me…. already done to you” is such a great line and so true of life. In the early days of her national talk show, Oprah Winfrey was larger. One of the most notable moments in her career was when she went on a big diet and showed herself off in her jeans. It was probably her most well-known and parodied talk show moment before the whole "everyone gets a car" episode.

This is one of my all-time favorite movies a couple of fun facts that you might want to know is that the girl that played Nettie was a real African princess. The girl singing in the church that drew Shug there was her daughter. Shug spoke about her daddy having custody of her when she was in the bathtub with Celie drunk. Then there was the scene when Albert's father was speaking badly about Shug saying all of her children got different daddies and he said all her children got the same Daddy and I can vouch for that is because he was the daddy. That's why he was smiling on the porch when the Great sing off was going on. When should first got to the house and she was going off on Albert about how weak of a man he was and couldn't speak up to his daddy that is because she was pregnant by Albert and his father would not let them get married because she was a singer that was Outkast from her daddy's Church. And if you ever go back in to watch the movie and the scene at the church pay attention to how Laurence Fishburne was looking mean at the pastor and ready to fight him if he would not have accepted shug. Glad you enjoyed it hope you watch it again
This is one of my favorite movies, and I have been desperately waiting for you to react to this! I would also like to give you a bit of trivia and say that for the scene when Danny Glover separated, the sisters, he was so distraught about doing it that he told them he would only do it once and ask them please not to make him do it again . Afterwards he spent the rest of the day in his trailer because he was so upset.
I'm so glad I watched this with you. Normally, I skip watching this beautiful movie because it's so heart-rending, but I knew it would be worth watching to hear your take. 😂😂 ALWAYS a good time over here❤
This came out when I was 12 and still makes me 😢. One thing I would like to share-we went to see The Iron Claw on Christmas (son loves wrestling, daughter in law likes Jeremy Allen White😂) and there were whole families in the theater to see The Color Purple musical (like Grandma, grandkids, parent, aunt, uncles and cousin) dressed in purple and someone brought arch of purple ballon’s and put it near door and families were taking pictures under it. Made me feel like all was right with the world for awhile.
28:28 “She punched her back to slavery”. Dear Lord, I almost passed. ☠️

The movie doesn't tell you but the girl singing in the choir is Shuggs daughter
I'm glad I'm not the only one who saw that. Those cheekbones, and that power voice.
I think most figured that out lol
@soldiermedic45 The pastor was her father. The one who suggests singing God's Trying to Tell You Something is her mother and the girl who sings it is her sister.
Not her sister her daughter. Remember she has children.
The woman in the church who lead sings is the real voice behind all shugs songs. Imagine that, being snubbed in the movie by your own voice 😳

Such a wonderful movie. Thank you so much for reviewing it and watching it. You are awesome.
This is how I knew Danny Glover could act. I also saw Bat21.

"Ain't nobody gonna miss him...Mel Gibson might."
😂😂😂😂😂
I love the movie, music, and book! I KNOW you are going to love it 💜💜💜
Happy Birthday to Momma J☺️
" I thought he was fixin' to hit a chicken with a hammer"😂😂😂
This is one of my favorite movies, and I have been desperately waiting for you to react to this!
I would also like to give you a bit of trivia and say that for the scene when Danny Glover separated, the sisters, he was so distraught about doing it that he told them he would only do it once and ask them please not to make him do it again . Afterwards he spent the rest of the day in his trailer because he was so upset.
I'm so glad I watched this with you. Normally, I skip watching this beautiful movie because it's so heart-rending, but I knew it would be worth watching to hear your take. 😂😂
ALWAYS a good time over here❤
Who else knew that Harpo was Oprah backwards?
On another note, have not seen this movie as an adult and bro, I am speechless.
WILD you haven't seen this. This movie is also WILD... Not for the weak Lol
43:23 “Ain’t nobody gon miss him… Mel Gibson might,” 🤣🤣🤣 had me weak!
Love this movie. The acting in this movie is top notch. This movie has so many feels
10:46 Danny Glover’s character in this is brutal
I still can’t believe the NAACP boycotted this movie and pressured the folks who make the Oscars to not win anything.
"Nobody going to miss him... Mel Gibson might." lmao....
This is my FAVORITE movie ever!!!!
In the book, it's clear that Celies in love with Shug before she even sees her when she see Shugs flyer for a show.
I don't know if I can bring myself to watch the modern 'Color Purple' I feel I would judge it because this original is perfection.
