  • Saturday 7th October 2023 marks exactly 20 years since the very first episode of Wheeler Dealers was aired presented by Mike Brewer and Edd China, and we thought it was an opportune time to see if we could find out what happened to those early cars after they were sold.
The first series was very much a low budget affair, with Mike & Edd only had £1000 to buy and restore a classic car - remember cars and parts were a lot cheaper in 2003!
Initially WD was serialised in 30 minute episodes, with 2 per car, and the first six episodes featured:
    Ep 1&2 - 1983 Porsche 924
    Ep 3&4 - 1985 SAAB 900 Turbo
    EP 5&6 - 1982 Volkswagen Golf GTI MK1
Please hit that subscribe button and notification bell to make sure you don't miss any future episodes.

Wheeler dealer cars were never condition 1, fully restored mint etc. Perhaps the odd later car but these early ones were very much rattle-can-resto's

Did some research into it too.
Porsche was scrapped on the 2nd November 2010.
Saab 900 turbo isn't scrapped or exported. Probably hidden away in a garage or rotting somewhere.
Mk1 golf gti is also not scrapped. Although changed owners 3 times in 2014 which is odd. Although most likely still somewhere.

Saab was Vic checked 1/12/2003 so must have been involved in a small accident after the show was broadcast. No cert of destruction issued - so it might be out there somewhere or broken privately for spares by a Saab enthusiast. The Golf Gti was sold on eBay back in 2014 - it had suffered an engine fire and needed a lot of work - its probably been tucked away ever since. It was still quite rough when WD sold it on in truthfulness.

Wheeler Dealers actually made a series of "specials" where they tracked down a few of the cars along with their current owners, to see how they'd faired...

I heard a story about the Saab: it wasn't really for sale and belonged to the Saab specialist who owned the immaculate one. The WD team asked him to find them a 900 Turbo for sale so he offered them his parts car if they let him buy it back afterwards. The 'buyer' was his wife and he actually bought it back for less than he'd sold it to them for, broke it and used the new parts they'd fitted to repair other Saabs. The whole thing was arranged in advance.

It's a TV show, I'm sure a lot of things went on off camera. Was always suspicious of the easy fixes they did. Would the boxter really have parked it up for years and sold it for scrap money if all it needed was a gearbox oil flush? The Lancia Delta needed a new steering rack which was sn engine out job. But we were told just replacing the bushes fixed it. Don't get me wrong I enjoyed the show back in the day. But the longer it went on the more I could see a lot of it was staged for the camera.

Watching the 924 programme raised my interest in them, they were so cheap, I ended up buying a 944 for £1500, sadly due to an unexpected illness I had to sell it, a year later I bought another for £2k, paid to have it polished and it shone. One day I went to it and someone had taken a screwdriver to the whole car, I was devastated, the only reason I can think of was because of what it was, I claimed on the insurance and never bothered with another

God, I can not believe 20 years have past. I remember very good each original WD episode.
Time is surely running out of control ... the way it passes. Looking back at the Wheeler Dealer cars, all of them are good engineered cars, compared to the washing machines on 4 wheels from today. Jeremy Clarkson used washing machines, fridges and cardboard boxes as comparison between regular cars and the then-new 2003 Rolls-Royce Phantom. That comparison became true now. Now we really have some properly badly engineered cars, in fact, the most of them.

To get a better perspective of what's happened to the cars for future episodes it would be worth doing a proper HPI / Car Vertical check on them... That way you should be able to determine exactly what their history is - including things like reg number swaps etc.

The general plural of "pound" has usually been "pounds" (at least since Chaucer), but the continuing use of the Old English genitive or neuter "pound" as the plural after numerals (for both currency and weight) is common in some regions.
