Hey Oscar, I'm really enjoying this series so far and it was definitely heartwarming to hear that the 205 GTi is still about! Thanks for all that you're doing on this channel 🤝
Its a show so most of they must cutt corners. Mostly the early seasons in the UK and the USA. In an early WD USA episode where they do that Ford Bronco you can see spots of a horrible paint job on the top of the doors where the windows go in.
The brown Porsche 928 was living in the Lenham/Maidstone area circa 2006-2008 ish. It then went out to Ireland for a few years before Mike bought it back.
I remember the 205 GTI episode especially when it was smoking badly and said it was a bad linkage. I bet Edd had to put another engine in it off camera
You touched on the Capri sale. The Porsche 928 sale was also staged. I personally know the "buyer" and I knew he didn't own a Porsche 928. I reached out to him when I first saw the episode and he confirmed that the sale was staged. He knew Mike Brewer and the (then) production team as he's a motoring journalist by trade. As you've said this is because there are time constraints when making TV programmes so it is inevitable that some sales have to be staged to get episodes completed within certain timeframes.
They buyers and sellers were fake. Mike doesn't source or buy the cars. Quite a few of my friends have appeared on the show, buying or selling the cars I know of 1 car that got sold by a 3rd party that came back with a threat of suing the show. The money was paid back, and the car went to scrap.
@graham: Well, it depends on the car. And on the owner even more so. I wouldn't say that WD cars lasted a short time only after they were being sold. It literally varies case by case and I definetly would not blame Wheeler Dealers for it. There are buyers of these cars who didn't take care of them. And the Ford Capri in any case is a very bad car, one of the worst cars in history. And ugly.
Hi Oscar, entertaining channel, I've just subscribed. A bit of info for everyone, a lot may know, some may not. Edd China started his own RUclips channel, Workshop Diaries, about a year ago. It promised big things but now seems to be mysteriously dead and has been for many months. Edd has nearly 1 million subscribers and has not had the decency to put up any posts as to why. Paul Brackley was the main mechanic behind Wheeler Dealers and actually did more work on the cars than Edd, or at least as much, most of it off camera. He turned up on the last episodes of Workshop Diaries and actually said that the whole buying process is fake. Paul was the one who went to look at the cars before Mike Brewer turns up with all the crew. I'm afraid all the TV car programs, including Car SOS are fake to some degree. I personally know someone who was involved with one of the Car SOS projects, and when the car was handed back to the owner it was a non-runner, it had to be filmed with the owner driving it many weeks later. Also, if anyone remembers the Wheeler Dealers Volvo P1800S, that car ended up at a garage in Rochdale who did some work on my son's car. They restore mainly E types and other rare Jags, but it was in a terrible state, almost scrap. You might be able to find that one Oscar, as some poor sod was going to sink a load of money into it.
Oscar, from what Ive managed to gather, more often than not,an actor would stand in for a new buyer, but many times the purchase price would be correct. Also Paul Buckley would generally be in charge of the selling of the cars. Also on occasion, the seller on screen would also be an actor. And then there's the story of the XR2,which Mike crashed into the back of the camera car during the test drive, hence the broken spotlight and bent bumper (which werent damaged in the ad he found it on)
Ahh the 205gti that they "fixed" the smoking engine with a new gear linkage.. Remember it being all over the forums back in the day.. Apparently, the story was it had a cracked engine block
I like how you narrate and how you present the background story and the prices ... I always react with "Oh my God, what prices there used to be". Them cars were laugheably cheap, and it is in a way hilarious how Mike achieved even smaller prices after bargaining with the sellers 😂😂. Mike and Ed were definetly visionaries with creating Wheeler Dealers and Mike choosing the specific cars also.
RUclips keeps deleting this for some reason. Might as well try once more. The 928 was sold into the Republic of Ireland and eventually bought back by Mike. The BMW 840i was also sold into Ireland. A poster on the motors section of the Irish forum Boards bought it. He sold it on quickly as he wanted a 850i. Not sure where it is now. Never saw the Irish reg for it so can’t track it here. The VW transporter builders van that Edd wrapped and bought was on Twitter in about 2013. It had gone on fire on the way to the beach, sadly. Love the videos and idea for the series.
Very interesting concept looking up these "historic" cars. A link to the original WD program would make it even better. Now off to find the Capri episode
Very interesting. What about the guy that helped Edd with the work? Was it Paul ? Be interested to see what he has to say 😂. Maybe a future guest on your channel?
I can't really say I am surprised as the the whole sales being fake thing. Earlier on before seeing all the rumors I had a hard time believing that everyone would be willing to go on the camera buying/selling a car. I know many people barely like to have any further interaction than necessary. After the rumors, it kind of made sense. It's similar in the way of that to the game of Car Mechanic Simulator. It's merely showing you what *could* be. It's like showing you a cake with the recipe but not all the portions. There are many RUclipsrs nowadays doing similar stuff with hours on hours of footage for just one 30 minute episode.... and they don't have to keep ratings up on the telly! Even with the buying/selling and sourcing of vehicles being fakes the show still has inspired many. It's got a lovely charm to it in the earlier seasons not much reproduce. As far as the point many make about cheap parts and labor etc.... that isn't too unrealistic. Knowing the right people definitely gets you ahead. Also, economy is much worse at least in the states now. Material prices have gone much farther up, so has labor. It's hard to imagine anyone giving you a deal on a paintjob now due to the substantial loss potentially associated. Thanks for the videos! You've earned a new subscriber. I myself was doing a bit of a dig, but browsing old forums can be rather tiresome and time-consuming. Nice to have these quick little videos that sum them up well. Also, for any of the cars that DID make it out, I believe some ended up on IMCDB as well, there are many individual history buffs in a lot of the threads on that site that have managed to dig up info. Looking forward to the next one!
Some more info from the archives Toyota MR2 Indeed I knew a lot about this one already. The boys took on a MR2 needing some attention, or rather a lot as later owners went on to find out! I was speaking to its last owner a couple of years back, it was just far too gone to be worth restoring so he used the parts to fix up his other MR2 mk1's Water had been leaking in for over a year, floor rotten and interior ruined! The car had 13 owners before its death, no scrap marker but it is confirmed scrapped by Paul (it's final owner) in 2013/2014 I believe it was so that'll do it for us! I did have some photos of it when it was being broken up but not sure if they're on my old laptop, my Grandads laptop or my old phone. MOT expired August 2012, it went back again in September but failed on corrosion and a few other stuff. Mileage was 138,000 before it met it's fate Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI Another one with a similar fate to the above. Mike and Edd took on another hot hatch hero, this time it was a 205 GTI! Info taken from the 205 owners club potentially suggests another death. Mot expired in April 2012. It went on a sorn and is believed that Baz (the last owner) broke it up for spares after a planned restoration turned out to show it was a complete an utter dog of a car! Believed to have been stripped and weighed in, no scrap marker and still on a sorn so not confirming anything as of now.
I can’t find it now but the was an article 7/8 years ago on a Japan cars website that tracked down every WD Japanese car and their fate. Might be a good source for you if you can find it. I’ll have a dig around and see if I bookmarked it on an old laptop
I'm sure this has been said before, but they don't make any profit, they make a loss on them all as they don't include the cost of time working on them
@@originalshadowfax Any reasonable person can understand that, and on one occasion Mike even mentions that the cost of parts is VAT-free, so even less of a profit if it was a private enterprise. Then again, doing it yourself in your spare time, you could make a profit albeit at a low hourly rate.
@oscarsgarage447 Thank you also.. First time ive ever been mentioned or had my reply shown an a youtubers channel.. Looking forward to all future vids... Brilliant work..
The whole buying & selling fakeness doesn't surprise me. I remember when they did the TVR & didn't include the price of new brake rotors & pads that you can clearly see they replaced but didn't include on the parts bill.
Wheeler Dealers should be renamed Dodgy Bodgers. I reckon the only vehicle properly restored was the Amphicar. As it was an amphibious car, it had to be repaired correctly.
It's a pity that Toyota MR 2 got scraped due to rust in fact l saw a driving around were l live in Australia so they are still around of course been a Toyota in Australia it would be worth a bit of money classic Toyota's are selling for good money classic European and British cars aren't selling

More interested in the random new wing mike magically found for the mr2 and the giant rust hole in the rear quarter that just vanished during the show. It was so fake I still remember it.
I like the show but the lies about how much parts are is stupid and now every one is there mate and get it done for next to nothing eg a full repaint on a mk1 transit £950 bullshit
One of the cars was scrapped soon after the show. Mike doesn't source or buy or sell any of the cars. Many of my friends have appeared on the show, selling or buying the cars.
Hey Oscar, I'm really enjoying this series so far and it was definitely heartwarming to hear that the 205 GTi is still about! Thanks for all that you're doing on this channel 🤝

Really enjoying this series. If the "buyers" shown are fake, it wouldn't surprise me if most of the "seller's" are as well.
Its a show so most of they must cutt corners. Mostly the early seasons in the UK and the USA.
In an early WD USA episode where they do that Ford Bronco you can see spots of a horrible paint job on the top of the doors where the windows go in.
It is with most of these shows.
The brown Porsche 928 was living in the Lenham/Maidstone area circa 2006-2008 ish. It then went out to Ireland for a few years before Mike bought it back.
Yes, I saw it at the Practical Classics Restoration Show at the NEC in March 2022.
The 928 must've been the luckiest buy ever.
Ed sent me some of his huge t shirts for a charity event once , one ended up as my wife’s pjs !

I used to look up the old cars they did on the Pistonheads forum. Most of them will say that the buyers were in fact fake
They buyers and sellers were fake. Mike doesn't source or buy the cars. Quite a few of my friends have appeared on the show, buying or selling the cars
I know of 1 car that got sold by a 3rd party that came back with a threat of suing the show. The money was paid back, and the car went to scrap.
Back in the day I used to love looking in the loot for cheap runners
Wow remember LOOT! Also FridayAd and FreeAds! Good times
Just discovered your channel. Interesting stuff. Surprising (or maybe not) that so many WD cars lasted for such a short time after the show.
Thanks for joining us!

It has been told that quite often they used production members to pose as buyers to close the show then would try and sell after
At higher prices probly, "as seen on wheeler dealers"

It did lead me to one of the forum posts on the MR2
That’s it exactly 👍
Bought not brought !
Ah, the pronunciation police. We have been expecting you.
Similarly it's 'corroborate' not "corrabarate".
Good idea meet and greet with owners 👍 👍
Great idea, just need to find some first!!!
I sold a 1.6 gti around the same time as wd for £250. It was rough as a badgers' though.
I genuinely didn't know that the buyers we see are not "real"! How are the programme allowed to do this/get away with this?!
Guess it was just made for entertainment. There is probably a lot like this goes on in other programmes...

Another great video.. At least for now, one car has manage to stay alive.. As for its condition?. Who knows!..

How about the green jag mk2 that was featured
We will get there - hopefully!
Lip smackingly good
Cant believe they scrapped that capri. What a joke
Brought a car from bradford ....ha ha ha ha ...stop it now .... bradfordstan sorry there ...
I believe Mike when he says this car is fit for another 40 years ... but you tell us the cars get scrapped not long after Mike sells the cars .. ??
I can only report what I find out... :-)

@@oscarsgarage447yes it did and it was in a terrible state when then revisited it. 😢
The mk1 mr2 where Mike finds a freshly painted front wing in a scrapyard without a mark on it in the same colour 🤥
That was a stroke of luck!
Damn none of the tv shows back then was honest lol im thinking of the fake buyers and the capri that was scaped
My channel, i win! That's gold
Thanks, some mistake this for a democracy!
use vehicle score bud, free for a normal check, if you wanted a full report its 8.99 or just a salvage report 2.99
